The Mount Zion International University of Rwanda was estab-lished in the year 2018 and is managed by the “The Charitable Educational and Welfare Society” at Busanza, Kigali, Rwanda.

This University campus is located at Busanza about 6 kilometers away from Kigali International Airport, and can be easily reached by air from various countries. The University is approved by the Government of Rwanda.

The panoramic view from the Busanza campus embraces hills and valleys of the beautiful scenario, typical of Rwanda. The refreshing and revi-talizing ambience is conducive to learning recuperation. The Mount Zion Inter-national University of Rwanda has been set up by its patrons with a passion to provide value based superior quality professional education to the young generation. We ensure quality service with ultra-modern facilities at very af-fordable rates. It imparts training of medical professionals who will be socially

oriented and ethically principled. This institution will give personal attention to every part of the training by well experienced teachers, who have vast experi-ence in their concerned fields. Our main objective is to nurture the skills of pa-tient management and communication. We inculcate the concept of “concern for our society” considering the fact that life expectancy of nearly thirty years separates those in the richest countries from those in the poorest. “To cure sometimes, to relieve often, but to comfort always” is what a physician can do. We will provide a congenial atmosphere for the students for the development of the true tenets of the medical profession as inculcated by Hippocrates.

All the details of the Departments and hostels and details of faculty members are provided in the website of the University (mountzioninternation-aluniversity.com).

I had. As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” After decades of providing support to educational and healthcare initiatives globally, it is a noble endeavour for the Mount Zion Group to fund and establish a med-ical school in Rwanda. The MZIUR faculty have shown a commitment to excellence through the design of an innovative curriculum and the use of unique teaching methods and a team-based approach. Students will learn the importance of improving the health and healthcare needs of under-represented and underserved communities, starting right here in Rwanda. I am excited about the momentum we are creating to address the growing need for primary care physicians who are trained to deliver high quality compassionate care. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the MZIUR, I welcome all to the future of healthcare.

Serving as educators, facilitators, motivators and mentors, MZIUR faculty and staff nurture and challenge the spirit of our students and guide them on their jour-ney to become world changers, discoverers and explorers, as well as curators and stewards. Our rich history reflects that MZ students have been catalysts for positive change and models for exceptional bravery and honour since the University’s founding. This is why I am proud and honoured to serve as member of MZIUR Board of Directors. I pledge to encourage our students and alumni to positively influence change in the world through making ethical decisions and living lives of integrity.I believe that we as MZIUR have the unique and God given ability to define what we do in a way that can be a very compelling witness to the true nature and values. As Board of Directors, I have the privilege and responsibility of continuing the leadership of MZIUR toward that purpose.

As “living the values” is an integral part of MZIUR, the University also places emphasis on active involvement in the community to inculcate a caring attitude among students and staff. This is reflected in the robust camaraderie among students, staff and the community. It also enables students to translate knowledge gained in classrooms into health education to the public, enhance communication skills and strengthen their professional and technical skills in real world environments. Medicine, dentistry and health sciences programmes have always been interesting paths to explore. With the dynamic change in healthcare services and the need of the communities, this has opened up many fascinating courses leading to at-tractive career paths. We would like to take this opportunity to advise students to learn more about a particular profession before they pursue any of these courses in order to ensure a better future for themselves. We welcome students to explore the vibrant and diverse opportunities at MZIUR, discover our teaching and research strengths and our diverse networks of partners and collaborators and be the future of better healthcare.

amongst nations. Education is the base for the advancement of science and technology and thereby progress both in terms of economics and power. Our motto spells out two very important things – ‘Trust’ and ‘Care’. In spir-itual terms, one needs to trust upon the Lord waiting in patience for ‘His’ divine will to unfold because he has in store blessings untold – HE Cares for us. In the worldly sense, Trust is a very important component of the human psyche. Though it is an abstract thing, its presence has far reaching implications. Firstly trusting one’s own self enhances self-confidence and thereby self-esteem, which is very important for overall mental and physical well-being. Secondly, trusting teachers and mentors instils this ingredient of trust in you through their dedicated service by imparting education and caring to see the gratification of your intellectual needs. With the arrival of the student at Mount Zion International University, each year history surely will be created, but my advice to students, teachers and the general public has always been very much motivating and optimistic – “Don’t be just a part of history, but create your own history.”

As a student at MZIUR, you have many advantages. These include modern classrooms, variety of courses and highly-credentialed faculty, personalized academic advising, and a faculty, staff and administration whose mission is to enhance your ed-ucational experience. The campus enjoys tremendous community support. While you are here, make the most of the opportunities afforded to you. Meet other students. Get involved in campus life. Visit the faculty and seek their counsel. Above all else, make a difference in and out of the classroom. The faculty and staff join me in wishing you well during this academic year.

research, for the quality and scale of our research capability, and as a thriving biotech-nology hub.

We have two big ambitions:> Offer our brightest researchers, regardless of where they are in their career, the funding they need to find the solutions to our century’s greatest health care challenges.> Ensure that, regardless of where you live, you can access the best medical and allied health education. The big issues that drive us come from the communities where we live and work – both in rural and urban settings. We’ve already begun to understand and to find solutions for critical diseases including cancer, muscle degeneration, cardiac diseases and obesity. We know that success will be far greater if we work with, and within, communities to improve health outcomes. With the support of alumni, friends and partners, we can continue to think big and make extraordinary discoveries. Thank you for helping us translate our ambitions into reality.

Medical Curriculum MBBS course is for five years (ten semesters) plus one year Internship. The subjects covered include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Ophthalmology, Oto-rhino-laryngology (ENT), Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics. Clinical postings will start from the fourth semester onwards. Internal assessment marks (60%) and final examination marks (40%) will determine the progress through the course. There will be several examinations throughout the course and one has to pass the examinations in all the subjects every year in order to move forward to the next academic year. If any candidate fails in any year, he/ she will have to clear the failed subjects before advancing to the next academic year. 50% is the minimum mark required for a pass in each subject. More than the knowledge to be procured, a medico gets transformed from an ordinary individual to a doctor. This metamorphosis requires a painful and dedicated training and disciplining of the mind and body.

Campus Discipline There will be no ragging in the campus. The freshers will be mentored by the senior students. Morning assembly will be held at 7:30 am on all working days which is compulsory for all staff and students. After the assembly, students will have to be in the class room at exactly 8.00 am. Unauthorized absenting from class or coming late for the class will entail a fine. Clinical students will have round the clock duties in the wards. Hostel discipline will be rigidly followed.

Vacation There will be spans of vacation at the end of each semester after the final examinations. Students who go home for weekend can leave the hostels only after 4.00 pm of the last working day. They will have to return to the hostels before 6.00 pm on the day previous to the next working day.

Dress Code Formal decent dress with doctor’s coat with the sleeves up to the elbow and formal shoes for both Men and Women.

Medical Ethics In the days of Hippocrates, the doyen of medical profession, the doctor was considered as a Demi God. But now the doctor is despised. This change is created because of the loss of ethics in the profession. The correction is very easy. It can be done by learning EMPATHY – Put yourself in the shoes of the patient sitting in front of you. The purpose in life should be “service above self”.

Communication Skills Communication can be verbal or non-verbal. Communication includes Listening, Talking, Touching and Auscultating (LTTA). Behaviour of a professional can make or destroy his credibility. Personality is decided not only by the external appear-ance, but more by the approach towards others.

Role of the Parents The MBBS students are no more children. They are to metamorphose into future protectors of the society. So their responsibilities to the profession should be recognized. Parents should not expect frequent visits home. So many exams crowd the schedules and frequent distractions will reduce the professional development of the students.

Epilogue Admission to the course is the beginning of a great saga to reach your destination. Dress well, behave well, show humility, don’t waste time, learn to be a good listener, talk gently to others, work hard, avoid too much of leisure, respect the feeling and emotions of others, consider your patient as a human being with a body and mind and show empathy towards them. Respect your teachers, your seniors and colleagues. Treat your fellow students with respect. Be prepared to take up the challenges of the profession. With a little care, you will come out with much better wisdom, intelligence, knowledge, maturity and professionalism to lead a life of a doctor in a way that Hippo-crates preached and practiced and would have wanted us all to lead.

City of Kigali, Rwanda, East Africa Rwanda, warmly known as “the land of a thousand hills’’ is situated in East – central Africa. It lies 121 Km South (75 miles) of the equator in the Tropic of Capricorn, 1416 kilometres (880Miles) west of the Indian Ocean and 1250Km (777Miles) east of the Atlantic Ocean – literally the heart of Africa. Rwanda is bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. The country has a temperate climate, with two rainy seasons (February to April, November to January). Average temperatures range from 16-22 degree Celsius. Anyone visiting ‘the land of a thousand hills’ is in for a multitude of surprises: First is the personal safety, peace, security and stability enjoyed by both citizens and visitors of the country. Second there is the beauty of this nation. The landscapes in this green country are truly breathtaking. Many visitors to Rwanda have remarked that the physical beauty of the country is without an equal on the African continent. Rwanda has five vol-canoes, twenty-three lakes and numerous rivers, some forming the source of River Nile. Spectacular volcanoes and dense tropical forests dominate the north of the country, while gentle hills and valleys, calm lakes and turbulent rivers in both savannah and dense tropical vegetation dominate the rest of the country. The high altitude forests of the Virunga volcanic mountains, in northern Rwanda are home to the world’s largest number of endangered mountain gorillas. Numbering in the hundreds, the gorillas live in protected areas, free from poachers. The gorillas can be viewed in their natural mountain habitats at a fairly close range.
