Accommodations:

The Marriott Town Center. $101 per night, plus taxes and fees. Call 800.228.9290 for reservations. Rooms will be held only until July 18,

2011, so you should book your room now to avoid likely increases after that date. Mention the West Virginia District of Kiwanis Interna-

tional to get the Convention rate.

Registration:

The registration fees are: $30.00 for Kiwanians, $10.00 for Kiwanis Member Spouses and $5 for each non-Kiwanian guest. To help de-

fray costs, as with the Mid-Year Conference, a $10 registration will be imposed for those who attend one or two meals but do not regis-

ter for the entire convention. Registration is due by August 1, 2011. NO REFUNDS FOR MEALS OR REGISTRATION CAN BE

GRANTED AFTER AUGUST 9th.

Great conventions are expensive. Our District has worked diligently to secure very nice convention locations for us. Registration & con-

vention fees are standard to help pay for conventions, and advertising revenue is critical in helping the District to stay on budget for these

events. Thanks for your cooperation in helping support the convention. Please plan to attend and take advantage of this excellent oppor-

tunity to transact the business of the District, to meet with Kiwanians from across the District, and to enjoy the fun and fellowship.

The official convention functions begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and the convention will officially end with the installation of the 2011-2012

District Board of Trustees on Sunday morning. However, we have an excellent pre- convention outing planned for Friday night as a cook-

out and trip to the ballpark to see the local West Virginia Power minor-league baseball game. Bus service will be provided from the hotel,

and we will have the opportunity to sit together as a group, and the cookout will be in an area of the stadium reserved specifically for West

Virginia Kiwanians! Return service will be available at different times during the evening. There will also be an optional excursion on Sat-

urday afternoon to the State Capitol complex for those who do not have other meetings to attend, providing there is sufficient interest ex-

pressed on registration forms.

Program ads are a great way for a local business or nonprofit, Kiwanis club, or K-Family Member to promote their work or recognize an

individual. Please consider purchasing an ad in the program this year by completing and returning this form.

Your club may participate in the following contests:

Scrapbook

Bulletin

Website

Brochure; and

Business Card (must be designed by the owner, not professionally).

The first three winners in each contest will receive an award at the convention. Please bring your entries to the convention and submit

them during registration.

Please provide copies of all information immediately to your club members. Please encourage attendance at the convention. There are

many new developments in Kiwanis: a new Global Campaign for Children, elections, new club training and reporting procedures, new

Distinguished Club criteria for 2011-12, and other improvements. Please ensure that your club is well-represented to get this information

and so that your members may have the opportunity to experience an event as a part of the larger Kiwanis community in West Virginia,

AND DON’T MISS MICHAEL AMMAR!

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to

seeing you in Charleston and until then, I remain

Yours in Kiwanis Service,

Kevin Dean, WV District Gov.

In addition, although our lunch speaker is yet to be finalized, I am absolutely thrilled to announce that our speaker/performer

Saturday evening will be world-renowned magician and motivator and Logan, WV native Michael Ammar! Michael is the son

of the late former West Virginia Kiwanis Governor and Kiwanis International Trustee A.S. “Buddy” Ammar, the namesake of

our district’s Kiwanian of the Year Award. In addition to speaking and performing at Saturday evening’s banquet, Michael has

agreed to present the award this year which recognizes his father’s many contributions to the West Virginia Kiwanis Family by

honoring the individual who in the past year most exemplifies what Buddy stood for. More information on Michael and his

career is available on his website at www.ammarmagic.com. Arguably the world’s greatest sleight of hand magician and named

one of the 100 most influential magicians of the 20th Century by The Magic Magazine, Michael combines skill and humor in a

unique presentation sure to delight and amaze everyone in attendance. He has been seen on “The Tonight Show” and “The Late

Show with David Letterman” among others, and he lectures, teaches and performs all over the world. You will not want to miss

Michael’s dramatic and exciting return to the West Virginia Kiwanis family!

Online training for club leaders and lieutenant governors

URL: www.KiwanisOne.org/CLE and http://www.kiwanisone.org/Pages/Resources/default.aspx?PageID=286

Club Leadership Education is still available—online

Did you miss your district’s Club Leadership Education session? It’s not too late to receive this valuable training—just go online at www.KiwanisOne.org/CLE. Self-guided tutorials are ready whenever you are and are specific to each position: secretary/treasurer, president, membership chairman, lieutenant governor and—new this year—board member. The new board member module includes Roberts Rules of Order, basic board function and structure and knowledge that will be helpful in running smooth, productive meetings. Log on as often as you like to use this information as a resource. Another valuable resource for new leaders is the Leadership guide (http://www.kiwanisone.org/Pages/Resources/default.aspx?PageID=286), which includes a list of responsibilities, timelines and sample forms. Download the entire guide or the appropriate section.

From the Governor’s Desk

I know it is a cliché, but time real-

ly does fly when you’re having fun. I

cannot believe that we are more than half-

way through our mutual terms of office.

But we still have several months to go,

and there are many goals which I hope

you and your club will continue to pur-

sue. Although we have had real success

in building new or reactivating Service

Leadership Programs (SLP) this year,

there are still fully one-third of our clubs which do not sponsor an active SLP. We are not making any pro-

gress on this particular front, and we are truly missing a golden opportunity not only to help the students of

our communities, but to set the Kiwanis experience apart from our competition. I cannot emphasize strongly

enough how important it is to sponsor at least one SLP, and I and our district administrators will do anything

you need to help you along in this process. Please let us know how we can help. You may assume that be-

cause we are nearing the end of the school year, that this process must end, but when building a brand new

SLP, it is often much more productive to deal with school administrators and prospective faculty advisors

when school is not in session so that they have the time to discuss the matter. To be able to create a new SLP

by September, you really do need to start planning now, so please take advantage of this most critical aspect

of being a Kiwanian and develop a direct relationship with the youth of your community. You will never be

sorry, and your club will absolutely positively grow as a result.

I want to congratulate Immediate Past Governor Tina Larch and Immediate Past District Secretary

(and current First Lady) Larissa Dean, as well as all of our 2009-2010 club officers for being designated by

Immediate Past Kiwanis International President Paul Palazzolo as a Distinguished District for 2009-2010.

This is the second year in a row West Virginia has been so designated, and it is an achievement of which we

all should be very proud. Only seven of the 30 districts in North America received this designation for 2009-

2010!

We are trying a new process with this edition of the Mountaineer Bulletin. An electronic copy of the

bulletin has been emailed to every member of the district for which we have a valid e-mail address, and a

hard copy is being mailed only to each club’s president and secretary. We ask that the presidents and secre-

taries print out copies and share them with your club members to ensure that everyone receives a copy. All

members may sign up on the Kiwanis website at www.kiwanisone.org and provide a valid email address, and

that information will make it into our email distribution list automatically. You need your club’s ID number

and your individual member number, and your club secretary has this information from your club’s roster if

you do not. We are making this change for a number of reasons: to be more effective and efficient in the

distribution of the information so that it gets into the hands of our members in a speedy fashion, to save mon-

ey on printing and mailing costs which can be used for other purposes, and ultimately, if this process is

deemed successful, to publish the bulletin more regularly than the current three (3) editions per year. Your

feedback is important, however, so please contact me ([email protected]) or Editor Bernie

([email protected]) to let us know your thoughts on the matter.

Most of you are aware that we have launched a new district website: www.wv.kiwanisone.org. If

you have not seen it, I encourage you to take a look. It has up-to-date information about all district activities,

and you have the ability through the site to submit news stories and pictures from your club’s events for eve-

ryone to read about. In addition to news submission, the website has information on the meeting times and

locations of every club in the District to facilitate Interclubs, you can download important information such

as convention registration materials, Board of Trustees minutes, District Policies & Bylaws, and West Vir-

ginia Kiwanis Foundation materials. Please take advantage of this very significant resource to promote the

Kiwanis experience with your membership, and to grow your club.

Eliminate Project Update

As you are aware, Kiwanis International is once again partnering with

UNICEF on a new Global Campaign for Children: The Eliminate Project –

Kiwanis eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus. The World Health Or-

ganization credits the Kiwanis-UNICEF partnership with raising the collective

IQ of the world through our efforts to combat Iodine Deficiency Disorders in

the mid-‗90s through the mid 2000s. After a year-long selection process be-

gun at the 2009 Kiwanis International Convention in Nashville, the new pro-

ject and partnership were announced last summer at the Kiwanis Interna-

tional Convention in Las Vegas. We are partnering with UNICEF to raise

$110 million to eliminate this preventable disease by the 100th anni-

versary of Kiwanis in July 2015.

The last ten months have been primarily about planning and education, and

the project will be kicked off in earnest at this summer‘s Kiwanis Internation-

al Convention in Geneva, Switzerland. However, many decisions have been made regarding the struc-

ture of the program and various honors available to clubs; donations can be accepted now.

As in the past, clubs or individuals contributing $1,000 will still be eligible for a Hixson Fellowship, how-

ever a new award has been created for this project: the Zeller Fellowship. ―Zellers‖ require a contribu-

tion of $1,250 paid in no more than two annual installments. Charter Zellers must be paid in full before

September 30, 2011 to be designated as a member of the initial class of Zeller designees.

In addition to individual honors, the Kiwanis International Foundation is seeking clubs to be designated

as a Model Club by pledging to donate no less than $750 per member through the life of the campaign.

Monies donated to the Eliminate Project for Hixsons and Zellers (or other Kiwanis International Founda-

tion honors), as well as monies donated by individual members of a club or from any fundraising efforts

contributed by the club will count toward the fulfillment of this pledge. To put this amount in perspec-

tive, a club of 20 members which contributes $4 per member per week between now and the end of the

campaign will meet this pledge. Of course donations of any amount are welcomed. Clubs which are

able are also asked to consider making a $2,000 initial contribution before the convention in Geneva.

These contributions will most likely come from clubs which have established club treasuries and suffi-

cient funds on-hand now.

Why focus on these individual and club pledges and commitments now? Because early money is like

yeast – it raises the dough! Early giving will be critical to the success of this project. As potential con-

tributors see money coming in, they are actually more likely to contribute, whereas if the campaign

starts off too slowly, we will be challenged in building the momentum necessary to achieve our goal.

Nearly 100,000 mothers and babies in 38 countries around the world die needless deaths each and eve-

ry year because they do not have access to tetanus shots. A series of three inoculations costing a total

of $1.80 will protect these mothers from tetanus and will pass on the immunity to their unborn children

until they too can be inoculated. Tetanus is a disease that can absolutely be stopped, if only the shots

can make it into the remote and undeveloped areas where the disease is still very prevalent. This is

what you are asked to support and to be a part of.

Kiwanis can change history – again, with your help and the help of your club, and your Service Leader-

ship Program members. By partnering with UNICEF, Kiwanis has the ability to eliminate maternal/

neonatal tetanus from the globe. Please join us.

The Kiwanis International Foundation will be publishing Fundraising, Service, Public Relations and Social Media toolkits that will be available to you at www.theeliminateproject.org. Your club can also get much more

information right now about the disease and the project on that same website, and donations are also

accepted there. For those more comfortable, checks for donations can be mailed to The Eliminate Pro-

ject Campaign, c/o The Kiwanis International Foundation, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN

46268.

West Virginia Kiwanians:

My Name is Megan Savage and I am the Kiwanis Family Chair for the Key Club district. I know you are

asking yourself what is a Kiwanis Family Chair? I hope that you have a better understanding of my position

in this statement. I have several thoughts about this Position and I hope to share them with you. I encourage

all Kiwanis members to become involved in the Service Leadership Programs and especially ones that you

currently sponsor. As a Service Leadership Program member, I can say that we really look forward to your

advice and counsel, but what you may not know is you are also helping shape our future. How, you may

ask? There are several ways: you take your time to help with our projects; you listen to us and are very pa-

tient, but at the same time let us learn by our mistakes; and you show us how it feels to put others' needs be-

fore our own, and how a good citizen is always there for those that are in need. We watch and learn what it

takes to be come a very effective and respected citizen in our communities, and that yes, even though we are

young our time and thoughts are important. You are helping shape the future when you participate more

with Service Leadership Programs. Today's youth are tomorrow's future, so in all reality, you are making an

important investment in the future, and we appreciate all that you do.

That is why I would like to extend an open invitation to come and join us at our Key Club Fall Rallies

and our District Conventions. It is important that we all work together to see our District grow and make it

stronger. I would also like to see more Kiwanians participate in Service Leadership Programs projects, as

well as more participation on the part of of the Key Club, Builders Club, Circle K, K-Kids and Aktion Club

members with their counterparts, the Kiwanians. If you have any questions please drop me an e-mail and I

will be back with you as soon as I can, and I look forward to working with you this year to improve especially

the relationship between Kiwanis and Key Club in the great West Virginia District!

What is Kiwanis? A Key Clubber’s Perspective

It is an international Coeducational service Club founded in 1915, It is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indi-

ana, Current Membership is 240,000 members in 7,700 clubs in 80 nations the average age is 57, 74% men

and 26% women.

The Name "Kiwanis" was coined from the Otchipew American Indians expression " Nunc-Kee-Wanis"

variously translated as " we trade", " we share our talents," " we make a noise," or "we meet". This was orgin-

ally the motto of the Kiwanis, translated as " We Build." The Current Motto is " Serving the children of the

world". Members of the club are called Kiwanians.

I would like to give my definition of Kiwanis, Kiwanis to me is a group of volunteers who are trustworth,

honest, caring, compassionate, and understanding that give their time unselfishly an extraordinary group of

men and women who can work together as a well oiled machine, who sits down in a round table discussion to

make the community and those in it a better place to live, but it not only goes in the communities but also

around the world, They have the ability to walk a mile in other shoes showing compassion, patience, and un-

derstanding, they give their time and never ask anything in return, I have often heard my Dad tell me that "

Kiwanis" waslike Christmas 24 hours a day 365 days a year, and Once I had the opportunity to attend a Kiwa-

nis function I had an idea, but after I joined the Builders Club it was then and there I totally understood what

my Dad was talking about. So it has been by participation that I totally understand what the True Meaning of

Kiwanis, Kiwanians are not Miracle workers but they are very compassionate Men and Women who through

their tireless efforts, to make an impact in this world to make it a safer place for all those who need it, It may

be putting in a playground, or building a Handicap ramp and someone's home, to the Education of the youth,

or just someone whom you can sit and talk with, I can honestly say that I have never seen a Kiwanian ever call

attention to what they do, but I truly beileve like my dad Kiwanian' s really and truly are " Hero's" now that

is to me what " Kiwanis" is.

Taste of Putnam Off to a Great Start

by William McDonald

Kiwanis Club of Putnam County

What a successful first Taste of Putnam for the Kiwanis Club of Putnam County! Despite grey skies

and chilly temperatures, upwards of a thousand residents had a great time tasting the fantastic food served up

by 11 vendors. The hungry tasters sampled everything from chicken salad with ginger sauce to grilled Ro-

maine lettuce, and crab cakes to Key lime cheesecake.

Repeatedly folks said, “You have to make this an annual event—it’s great!” And the restaurants were

obviously happy to meet so many potential customers. Club member Clay Wymer reported that he spoke to

9 of the 11 restaurants and all nine said they planned to come back to Valley Park next year.

Patrons at the event purchased tickets at 50 cents each from Kiwanis and then paid vendors with tick-

ets; each food sample was variously priced between one and six tickets. Vendors redeemed their tickets for

cash at the Kiwanis’ “office” after the event.

Deb Frost, president of the Kiwanis Club of Putnam County, coordinated the overall planning process

for the Taste of Putnam. Michael Henshall, club member and past administrator of the Taste of Charleston,

was key in recruiting restaurants and providing logistical expertise for the event. Members Gary Dickens and

Clay Wymer obtained sponsorship money from City Insurance ($2,500) and Wholesale Tire ($2,500). The

Putnam Parks, Putnam County Schools, City of Hurricane, and the County Commissioners all provided assis-

tance.

The Kiwanis Club of Putnam County had three income streams from the event: 1) vendor application

fees ($75 @ vendor), 2) 25% of the gross food sales, and 3) 100% of the profits from beverage sales

(beverage booths were staffed by Kiwanians). The Kiwanis Club netted approximately $3,000 from the

event. The Taste of Putnam is expected to be even bigger next year with, possibly, 15 or more restaurants

participating. Club member Kim Maring predicted, “With good weather, we will double our attendance next

year.”

John "Johnnie" Walker, Sr., a longtime member of the Shepherdstown Kiwanis Club, died at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg on May 18. He was 85. Johnnie, as he was known to his legion of friends, always had a kind word of encouragement for everyone and he was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was active in all aspects of the club until recently, when his health wouldn't permit him to participate. His wife, Sara, sons Terry and Michael, and daughter-in-law Margaret are all members of the club.

Johnnie was a U. S. Army veteran and a longtime employee of the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg. In addition to Kiwanis, he was active in several church and other community groups. Former Gov. Joe Manchin awarded the Order of the 35th Star, one of the highest honors a West Virginia governor can grant to an individual, to Mr. and Mrs. Walker in 2010. Johnnie's legacy of helping, caring, and encouraging will long be remembered by his family and friends, particularly in and around Shepherdstown, WV. May he rest in peace.

Wellsburg Kiwanis Club celebrates 90th anniversary

On April 4, 2011, the Wellsburg Kiwanis Club, was joined by many area Kiwanis leaders and mem-bers at a dinner celebrating its 90th anniversary. The event was held at the Serbian American Cultural Center. Jacie Ridgley, club president, said the club was begun in 1921, when a group of Wheeling Ki-wanians contacted about 50 business and professional men in Wellsburg about forming a chapter there.

Asked what he enjoys most about the club, 52-year member Phil Consalvo said, "All of the projects,

which were a lot of fun and a good money-maker for the community." Ridgley noted the club has supported

such causes as Special Olympics, Boy Scouts, Easter Seals, the Salvation Army and the Brooke County Op-

portunity Center through funds raised through such annual events as its chicken barbecue, pancake supper

and rose sale. Ridgely also said that the club's success is due to the efforts of many members. She noted in

1987 female members were accepted, and Becky Bell of Wellsburg became its first woman president in 1991.

The Wellsburg Kiwanis Club sponsors K-Kids chapters at Wellsburg and Franklin primary schools and

this year, Hooverson Heights Primary School; the Brooke High School Key Club; and a Circle K chapter at

Bethany College. On hand was Annie Parsons, a fourth-grader at Hooverson Heights Primary School, one of

many youth who have been influenced by the club through its formation of several school community service

clubs.

Attendees got a look at Wellsburg Kiwanis history through a display of photos and memorabilia provided

by Ruby Greathouse of the Brooke County Museum, and were entertained by the Brooke High School Madri-

gal Choir. Serving as keynote speaker, Kiwanis District Governor Kevin Dean encouraged members to be-

come involved with Project Eliminate. A joint venture with UNICEF, the program aims to eliminate the oc-

currence of neonatal tetanus, an infectious disease that kills an infant every nine minutes in any of 39 coun-

tries that lack the medical resources to fight it. Dean said it costs about $1.90 for three vaccinations against it,

and Kiwanis International and UNICEF have set a goal of raising $110 million over the next four years to

eradicate the disease.
