Design and principle of operation
3 Design and principle of oper-ation
The electropneumatic positioner is mounted on pneumatic control valves and is used to assign the valve position (controlled variable x) to the control signal (set point w). The po-sitioner compares the electric control signal of a control system to the travel or opening angle of the control valve and issues a signal pressure (output variable y) for the pneumat-ic actuator. The positioner is designed depending on which accessories are selected either for di-rectattachmenttoSAMSONType 3277Ac-tuators or for attachment to actuators ac-cordingtoNAMUR(IEC 60534-6).Additionally, a coupling wheel included in the accessories is required to transfer the ro-tary motion for rotary actuators according to VDI/VDE 3845.Springless rotary actuators require a revers-ingamplifierincludedintheaccessoriestopermit the powered operation in either di-rection.The positioner consists of a travel sensor sys-tem proportional to resistance, an analog i/p converter with a downstream air capaci-ty booster and the electronics with microcon-troller.Thepositionerisfittedwithtwoad-justablesoftwarelimitcontactsasstandardto indicate the valve's end positions. The position of the valve stem is transmitted as a either an angle of rotation or travel over the pick-up lever to the travel sensor (2) andsuppliedtoananalogPDcontroller(3).An A/D converter (4) transmits the position
ofthevalvetothemicrocontroller(5).ThePDcontroller(3)comparesthisactualpositiontothe4to20 mADCcontrolsignal(reference variable) after it has been con-verted by the A/D converter (4).In case of a system deviation, the activation of the i/p module (6) is changed so that the actuator of the control valve (1) is pressur-izedorventedaccordinglyoverthedown-streambooster(7).Thiscausesthevalveplug to move to the position determined by the set point. The supply air is supplied to the booster and the pressure regulator (8). An intermediate flowregulator(9)withfixedsettingsisusedto purge the positioner and, at the same time, guarantees trouble-free operation of the booster. The output signal pressure supplied by the boostercanbelimitedto2.4 barbyactivat-ingtheP9parameter.The volume restriction (10) is used to opti-mizethepositionerbyadaptingittotheac-tuatorsize.

Risk of malfunction due to incorrect sequence of mounting, installation, and start-up.Keep the following sequence.1. Remove the protective film from the pneu-matic connections.2. Mount the positioner on the control valve.3. Connect the supply air.4. Connect the electrical power.5. Perform the start-up settings.
The positioner is suitable for the following typesofattachment: − Direct attachment to SAMSON Type 3277Actuator
− Attachment to actuators according to IEC 60534-6(NAMUR)
− AttachmentaccordingtoVDI/VDE 3847 − AttachmenttoType 3510Micro-flow
Valve − Attachment to rotary actuators
Risk of malfunction due to incorrect mounting parts/accessories or incorrect assignment of lever and pin position.Attach the positioner to the control valve only using the mounting parts and accesso-ries as specified in Table 1 to Table 6. Ob-serve the type of attachment.Observe the assignment between lever and pin position (see travel tables on page 15).
NOTICE!
NOTICE!
Lever and pin positionThe positioner is adapted to the actuator and to the rated travel by the lever on the back of the positioner and the pin inserted into the lever.Thetraveltablesonpage15showthemaximumadjustmentrangeattheposition-er. The travel that can be implemented at the valve is additionally restricted by the selected fail-safe position and the required compres-sion of the actuator springs. The positioner is equipped with the M lever (pinposition35)asstandard.
Risk of malfunction because the newly mounted lever has not been adapted to the internal measuring lever.Move the newly mounted lever (1) once all the way as far as it will go in both directions.

Attachment to the control valve – Mounting parts and accessories
FE: The air purging function is automatically provided.
AttachmentaccordingtoIEC 60534-6(NAMURriborattachmenttorod-typeyokes)andtorotaryactuatorsThe positioner requires an additional port for the exhaust air that can be connected over piping. An adapter available as an accessoryisusedforthispurpose:
Threaded bushing (M20x1.5)
G¼¼NPT
0310-26190310-2550
The adapter uses one of the M20x1.5 con-nections in the housing which means only one cable gland can be installed.
Should other valve accessories be used which vent the actuator (e.g. solenoid valve, volume booster, quick exhaust valve), this ex-haust air must also be included in the purg-ing function. The connection over the adapt-er at the positioner must be protected with a checkvalve(e.g.checkvalveG ¼,orderno.8502-0597)mountedinthepiping.Other-wise the pressure in the positioner housing would rise above the ambient pressure and damage the positioner when the exhausting components respond suddenly.

Risk of injury due to the actuator stem ex-tending or retracting.Do not touch or block the actuator stem.
5.1 Pneumatic connections
Malfunction due to incorrect connection of the supply air.Do not connect the compressed air directly to the threaded connections in the positioner housing. Screw the screw fittings into the con-necting plate, pressure gauge mounting block or connection block from the accessories.
The pneumatic connections in the connecting plate, pressure gauge mounting block, and connection block are optionally designed as aborewith¼ NPTorG ¼thread.Custom-aryfittingsformetalorcoppertubingorplastic hoses can be used.
Risk of malfunction due to failure to comply with required air quality.Only use supply air that is dry and free of oil and dust.Read the maintenance instructions for up-stream pressure reducing stations.Blow through all air pipes and hoses thor-oughly before connecting them.
If the positioner is attached directly to the Type 3277Actuator,theconnectionofthepositioner's output pressure to the actuator is fixed.ForattachmentaccordingtoIEC 60534-6(NAMUR),thesignalpressurecan be routed to either the top or bottom di-aphragm chamber of the actuator, depend-ing on the actuator's fail-safe action "actua-tor stem extends" or "actuator stem retracts".For rotary actuators, the manufacturer's specificationsforconnectionapply.
5.1.1 Signal pressure gaugesTo monitor the supply air (supply) and signal pressure (output), we recommend mounting pressuregauges(seeaccessoriesinTable 1toTable 6).
5.1.2 Supply pressureThe required supply air pressure depends on the bench range and the actuator's direction of action (fail-safe action). The bench range is written on the nameplate either as the spring range or signal pressure range depending on the actuator. The direc-

Risk of injury due to the actuator stem ex-tending or retracting.Do not touch or block the actuator stem.
The positioner has a function to monitor the working range. If the lever moves too close to the mechanical stops (risk of mechanical damage), the positioner vents the actuator and the valve moves to its fail-safe position (S displayed together with E8 error code). In this case, check the positioner attachment. Reset the displayed error code by selecting RST (see section 7.6).

7.5 Initialization
The process is disturbed by the movement of the actuator stem.Do not initialize the positioner while the process is running; only perform an initialization during start-up with the shut-off valves closed.A signal pressure above the maximum permis-sible limit will damage the valve.Check the maximum permissible signal pressure of the control valve before starting initialization. If necessary, limit the signal pressure by connecting an upstream pressure reducing valve.Malfunction due to changed mounting or in-stallation circumstances.Reset the positioner to its default settings and re-initialize it after the positioner has been mounted on to another actuator or its mount-ing location has been changed.
Duringinitializationthepositioneradaptsit-self optimally to the friction conditions and the signal pressure required by the control valve. The type and extent of self-adaptation de-pends on the preset parameters.MAX is the default setting for the nominal range (Code P4).Duringtheinitializationprocess, the positioner determines the travel/rotational angle of the closing element from the CLOSED position as far as it will go in the other direction.
For normal operation, simply start initializa-tion over Code P15 after mounting the posi-tioner on the valve, checking the fail-safe po-sition (P2) and setting the volume restriction. The positioner only needs to work with its default settings.
StartinitializationbyactivatingCodeP15asfollows:
Turn Code P15Press and hold for six seconds. 6-5-4-3-2-1- is counted down on the display.Initializationstarts.Thedisplayblinks.
The time required for the initialization proce-dure depends on the actuator transit time and can take a few minutes.
