Challenge

Santos holds a 73 percent interest in South-East Queensland's Comet Ridge coalseam gas project and holds other exploration permits totaling approximately more than 100 wells that have been drilled in the Fairview area. Most of these are connected and producing to the gathering system.

Gas is gathered to two compressor sites (CS1 and CS2) where it is compressed and dehydrated before export to the Queensland Gas Pipeline system.

With such demand and production, MOX Products Pty Ltd. designed and delivered an innovative and flexible well head monitoring and control package for Queensland’s Fairview gas field.

Solution

Utilizing the flexibility of the MOX Unity Field Controller, a common design is used for the different well head configurations. These are free flowing choke valve control, pumping variable frequency drive control and pumping hydraulic drive control.

The package can be moved from one configuration head to another without any electrical or mechanical alterations. The well head equipment is connected to the terminal blocks and relevant parameters selected via the operator panel. This unique well head package is price effective and reduces operational risks, such as sending people into the field to monitor and control the sites. Instead this can now be done by the Plant Scape software.

Unlike typical proprietary well head packages, the nheritance of modular, open technologies, user programmable and expansion features from the MOX Unity Field Controller means that this well head package may be changed, expanded and enhanced in the future to deliver solutions to

new operational challenges.

Features of the system

A key feature of the well head package design is the package can be used across the three well head types on site with no modifications needed other than connection of the well head equipment and selection of the well head type via the Redlion Operator interface.

Benefits

The Fairview site is poised for rapid expansion and the number of well heads is expected to grow to many hundred. The MOX well head package offers Santos a flexible and reliable solution to allow an increase in the number of well

heads.

This solution also avoids operational risks, such as sending

more people into the rough terrain areas and significant

riskier fields to monitor and control the sites.

The flexibility of the package also means that Santos can

implement new operational modes for the sites, without

reinvesting in capital, but by simply modifying various

parameters in the MOX Unity Field Controllers. As Santos

continues to develop and expand, MOX Products will assist

and deliver technical solutions to ensure the success of both

companies.

Challenge

Emarat Gas operates a distribution network for the supply of gas to consumers in the Northern Emirates. Gas is sourced from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah Oman and Qatar. The primary operation is the transportation of Gas via Emarat pipelines to industrial operations producing cement as well as power and desalination plants.

The gas network extends from Al Ain in Abu Dhabi through Dubai up to Sharjah, Fujairah, , Umm Al Quwain, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah. The gas pipeline distribution system is controlled from the SAJAA compressor station control room located in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Solution

The control system is based on a SCADA software with twisted pair copper cables and long haul modems for the RTU Modbus communications. MOX was awarded a task to provide a new state of art of the gas metering station for the supply and monitoring of gas to a new construction power station at Hamria. The task was to modify the SCADA while it continued normal operations and implement DNP3 for communication via the Hamria Station using GSM communications. The MOX Unity RTU was interfaced to the

Slumberger flow computers using Modbus.

The Emarat Gas SCADA system includes: Dual redundant I/O File server Engineering work station 4 control room work stations 14 work station located throughout the Emarat, SAJAA

gas distribution operations center

The SCADA version was updated for compatibility with the DNP3 driver MOX also developed a special task for the back filling of predated process information in to trend graphs for flow, temperature and pressure.

The MOX Unity to SCADA communications was set up so that on process deviation it would report the process events using report-by-exception (RBE). Each time the communications was open between the MOX Unity and SCADA a 22 element gas composition was transferred from the Gas Chromatograph at SAJAA compression site to the MOX Unity validated and then transferred to the Slumberger flow computers. All status process values and gas composition values are read back from the flow computers for verification and transferred to the SCADA for gas volume transportation billing.

MOX is a specialist supplier of pipeline control and monitoring systems, the metering system interfacing flow meters used are Flowboss, Instrumet, Krohne, Sluberger, Daniel, etc. The MOX Unity’s perform proving cycles on fiscal metering for AGA 3 AGA 8 and AGA 11. leak detection modeling systems have also been provided, including. Including pipeline scrapper tracking, block valve / section valve control and cathodic protection monitoring.

Benefits

MOX has provided a number of different media for communications systems as part of the system implementation whilst providing a single overall point of responsibility to the clients. The media is used in telecommunications equipment as well as Ethernet. Equipment for high speed TCP/IP and includes the following; fibre optic cable and systems, twisted pair copper cable, GSM, GPRS, broad band wireless, data and HF radio systems, control centre to control centre microwave links and VSAT over mountainous terrain.

All Mox Middle East LLC., systems have been provided on a one stop shop basis with the result of reducing the implementation time period.

Challenge

The Hangzhou City Gas Distribution Project was proposed and financed by the Hangzhou Gas (Group) Ltd in order to fulfill the rapid growing needs of the City. A need was identified to improve the existing gas services of the city as well as install major new infrastructure to cover growth over the next five years. The overall project included the upgrade of existing and installation of new infrastructure as well as the construction of a number of SCADA control centers. The project works included the high pressure transmission pipeline, medium pressure outer distribution network, low pressure inner distribution network, gas gateway stations and emergency backup gas supply system.

Solution

The SCADA system incorporates the Mosaic SCADA Software in a large number of distributed SCADA control stations, all of which remain synchronized and fully operational at all times. MOSAIC is a state of the art SCADA system that offers many benefits. A key part of the SCADA system is the real time distributed database offered by the MOSAIC the real SCADA Software. The user also benefits from an improved trending system, enhanced sorting and filtering functionalities, fully developed user profiles, a state of the art schematic engine and the easy transfer of data into office automation products, such as Microsoft Excel.

The primary control and monitoring centers include the Central SCADA Control Center (including the data center) and the Disaster Backup SCADA Control Center. In addition to these, a wide area SCADA control centers are located at the north gateway station, the mix station, seven high-middle pressure control stations, two high pressure valve rooms, twenty five special pressure control stations, seventy five middle pressure area control stations, five middle pressure pipeline network monitor points and a number of other measurement points. Operators at any of these control centers, or from any remote MOSAIC terminal, have access to real time plant data collected from the entire SCADA network.

System Description

The Hangzhou Gas Distribution SCADA System is an integrated wide area control and monitoring system. High levels of technology integration are evident in the final solution application, including: leading edge RTU and telemetry technology, field bus technology, network communication technology, wireless communication technology, database technology, SCADA/HMI technology, Client/Server technology and Clustered real-time distribution technology. The highly reliable computer network is the key part of the SCADA system, with a dual level distribution control system connected by the network and wireless communications.

Benefits

The Hangzhou City Gas Distribution SCADA System was completed and commenced full operational status in July 2006. The system has fulfilled all the initial requirements set by the Hangzhou Gas Company and has enabled additional functionality not previously specified. Hangzhou Gas (Group) Ltd now have the capability to exactly forecast the usage and fluctuations in the system giving them the ability to accurately control and coordinate the gas distribution more effectively.

The MOX Gas Distribution Network SCADA system now successfully monitors and controls the entire gas system for Hangzhou city and helps to provide a reliable gas solution for the city.

Challenge

With a population of 1.3billion, China is poised to become the world’s largest economy. China also boasts a long history of natural gas. Since 1950, the country has made great progress in its natural gas industry.

To date, gas has been delivered to a couple of large and medium cities. China’s Chuandongbei Natural Gas Resource is a major subsidiary of CNPC Southwest division, responsible for the exploration and development of natural gas resources.

In order to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation the Chaundongbei Natural Gas system, the management board of Chuandongbei chose the MOX Field Controller to

monitor, control and manage the entire production process.

Solution

Wenhuang gas field station is a typical regional control station of the Chuandongbei project comprising of seven (7) gas wells and approximately 1000 I/O points. Wenhuang Regional Control Station has adopted the industrial automation software to manage the site’s HMI/SCADA functionality.

The MOX Unity Field Controller with enhanced RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) functionality, has been adopted as the hardware platform in each field station at the Wenhuang site. The SCADA system is connected to a MOX Field Controller at each gas well via a fibre optic LAN. The reliable collection of field data is further enhanced with a backup wireless communication channel using MDS digital radios. The control centre also exchanges real time data with the Jinshan dewatering plant and the Chongqing display centre via a leased line and a fibre optic (2M) channel respectively.

The regional control centre has one SQL Server used for historical data storage. All data, events and alarm messages are automatically saved to SQL databases after being processed. A data management system has been developed for analysis and reporting. In addition, a GPS device has been installed to synchronize time within the SCADA system. Wenhuang RCS adopts dual local networks to ensure redundancy.

The Wenhuang SCADA system was commissioned in April 2003 and the system continues to meet the customer’s requirements. The control centre personnel appreciate the intuitive and flexible user interface to efficiently oversee the entire system operations. The smart design allows operational staff to respond quickly to any alarm conditions. The MOX Field Controllers provide a robust and effective solution for monitoring critical infrastructure. The Chuandongbei site has significant natural gas reserves of approximately 1, 500 billion cubic meters and output is

expected to be 5 billion cubic meters per annum.

Challenge

Wuxi lies 150km Northwest of Shanghai in the rapidly expanding Jiangsu province. It is a national policy of China to improve the air quality of its cities through the improvement of its energy structure and in particular, through the delivery of clean fuel. The construction of infrastructure for the reliable supply of natural gas relies increasingly on smart solutions that offer efficient systems for monitoring and control.

Wuxi City’s natural gas distribution system is composed of one main station incorporating a central Distribution Control Center and Fire Control Center as well as 50 substations scattered strategically throughout the city. The network covers about 250 square km and provides natural gas for over 6 million residents.

Solution

This turnkey project was offered by combining the MOX Unity Controller, MOX 603 I/O, Citect SCADA software and Plant2Business software. It comprised of 1 Master control center and 1 back-up control center and a Gateway Control center.

The Main Master control center and Back-up control center are responsible for the data processing and ongoing system control. The RTUs and PLCs, which are located around the network, are responsible for collecting the data and sending the data to the Master Control Center through Wired or Wireless networks.

The communication between the Master control center and Backup control center use the VPN connection. With the wireless network bridge it meets the IEEE802.11b high-speed wireless communication network standard.

The gateway control center receives the order from master control center and sends data back to the MCC. At the gateway control center, it uses the MOX Unity combining with the ControlLogix PLX to collect the data. The MOX Unity is responsible for connecting to the sub-system with the 485 data bus and sends the data to the current capacity server for an analysis result of Chromatograph to calculate the current capacity.

The MOX Unity with the GPRS module is used as the remote terminal unit in the transfer place compressors station system and gas plant measuring station control system. The MOX Unities use 32 bit CPU, 4 RS232/485 ports and two Ethernet ports with a built in GPRS module.

On the high-presure network, the main communication channel between the MOX Unities and the MCC are the VPNs with the GPRS adopted as the backup channel. The connection between the MOX Unities and the MCC on the medium or low pressure network is the GPRS wireless connection. When using the GPRS wireless connection, the MOX Unity sends data via the APN.

Due to regulatory requirements, Municipal Gas Operators such as Wuxi Gas are required to collect field and operational information and report this information to various government bodies. Plant2Business software provides a seamless transfer of data and timely reports from the MOX Unity Controllers through to the management systems and on to the regulatory bodies.

Challenge

Wuhu City Gas Development Ltd. (WCGD) is a subsidiary of China Gas Ltd. WCGD has over 100 Km of city gas pipeline, which supplies 350,000 cubic meters of gas daily to the city.

Wuhu city’s integrated management system consists of a gas pipeline network control system, analog simulation leak detection system and geographical location information system. The gas pipeline network includes one control center, two gateway control stations, twenty one industrial user pressure regulating boxes, two medium-medium pressure stations, fifty pipeline network monitors and two sets of video monitors. In order to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation, WCGD required a SCADA system to monitor, control and manage the entire gas pipeline network system.

Solution

The gas pipeline network management system consists of numerous MOX Unity Field Controllers, CitectSCADA software, Plant2Business database interface software, SQL SERVER 2000, Visual Studio development technology and crystal report software.

The distribution control WAN system is based on a dedicated optical fibre network and GPRS wireless APN network communications. Redundant communications method is used on key remote control stations. The optical fibre main channel and the GPRS backup channel can realize automatic switch-over.

The analog simulation leak detection system uses Pipeline Studio and Pipeline Manager software. The system can generate a dynamic natural gas pipeline network model and an analog high-medium pipeline network, based on the pipeline flow quality-energy-momentum relational expression. It also has variable load, load prediction, leak detection and leak hunting location functions.

The geographical location information system, through MapInfo Professional software, builds a city pipeline network GIS application system based on GIS technology. The system includes five functional modules: GIS basic functional module, integrating search and statistics, print module, space analysis module, error diagnosis module and the

pipeline project integration module.

Control Center

The control center is configured with redundant SCADA real-time data servers, database server, gateway web server, analog simulation work stations, geographic information work stations, engineering work stations, operator work stations, MOX Unity master communication controllers, MoxGRAF software, CitectSCADA V6.0 software, Plant2Business software and SQL Server 2000 software.

The pipeline work station via the MOX Unity’s GPRS module connects to the APN web, and sends TCP/IP data pockets to the host computer and then via a G.703 line to the MOX Unity master communication controller. This APN web communication method can resolve the communication bottleneck problem, and improve the security and reliability of the data communications.

Gateway Area Control Station

The gateway area control station can receive the commands from the control center, and also send information to the control center. The gateway area control station is an independent control station, so it has the functions of independent indication and control. The gateway area control station through the MOX Unity redundant system acquires data and controls the operation, such as electrically operated valves, trip valves and the pipeline’s pressure and temperature transmitter signal. The Gateway area control station through ModBus connects to several facilities, including a hydrograph, instrument, chromatograph analyzer and other independent sub-systems. It sends the chromatograph analyzer’s results to a business flow measure machine for flow adjustment, and then it sends instantaneous delivery to the malodorous control panel to control the odorant delivery frequency.

The gateway area control station communicates with the control center via a combination of the optical fibre main channel and GPRS backup channel.

Technical station

The technical station includes medium-medium pressure regulating station, key industry clients’ pressure regulating boxes and pipeline network monitors.

The technical station communicates with the field flow measurers via MOX Unity controllers, MOX603 I/O modules and Modbus communication protocol.

The medium-medium pressure regulating station communicates with the control center via a combination of optical fibre main channel and a GPRS backup channel. Data can be collected from the key industry clients pressure regulating boxes, pipeline network monitors and control center, and then sent to the master communication controller through the GPRS wireless communication network.

The Wuhu city gas SCADA system was commissioned in September 2005 and the system continues to meet the customer’s requirements.

System functions

This system applies database technology, Visual Studio development technology and crystal report software on nine functional modules and the assistance system.

Production control management: Production managers can use the GIS system to send control commands to manage the working shift and check the integrated control report.

Pipeline network management: Users can check the operation data from facilities, including pipeline braches, high pressure main pipe, medium pressure main pipe, low pressure main pipe and other relative valve chambers. Users can also check the relative management regulations and documents of responsibility, and efficiently manage the original valve chamber references and data maintenance. The system includes pipeline network maintenance or technical management modules, repair or accident management modules and control management modules.

Gateway distribution station management: Users can check the technical parameters and history curve of the tank area. The system consists of operation situation diagram, measurement, delivery, maintenance, working shift, responsibility system, tank area management, fire protection management and alarm management function blocks.

CNG station management: Users can check the technical parameters and history curve of the CNG station. The system consists of operation situation management, maintenance, working shift management, responsibility system, tank truck control management and fire protection management function blocks.

Pressure regulating station management: Users can check the real-time technical parameters and the history of the pressure regulating station. The system consists of pressure regulating station, working section management and working shift function blocks.

Measure management: Users can check the real-time technical parameters and the history data of the pipeline network. The system consists of measure test system, training, facility management, measure standards,

measure confirmation, system investigation, working plan and flow calculation function blocks.

Security management: Users can check the technical parameters of pipeline network, monitor the security facilities and guarantee the secure utilization. The system includes security management organization, responsibility system, security monitor management, security data management and accident process function blocks.

Facility management: Users can check the facility technical documentation, repair situation, test results and accident record. The system consists of facility management organization, facility repair, technology improvement and accident management function blocks.

Technology improvement management: Procedures have been put in place to ensure the system stays up to date with improving technology. An example of this would include the process of updating control function blocks for greater functionalities.

Challenge

Suzhou Huarun Gas Ltd. is a joint venture company, established by Hong Kong China Resource Petrochems (Group) Ltd. and Suzhou Huqiu District (collective) asset management Co. in August 2003. The company registered capital of 15 million U.S. dollars, with a total investment of 29.98 million U.S. dollars. Suzhou Huqiu District has installed 258 square kilometers of gas pipelines, within the franchise rights, over the past 50 years. Operations include the production and sale of gas, gas pipeline and related facilities in the design, construction and maintenance. The company supplies gas to over 100,000 residential and 100 industry clients.

With the rapid economic development, a number of firms moved to Suzhou. This required Suzhou to build an advanced pipeline network SCADA system to acquire the real-time data and control the gas distribution for the city residential and industry clients. In order to meet this requirement, MOX Products provided a leading edge SCADA system to allow Suzhou Huarun Gas to monitor the gas flow, the quantity and predict the demands with great accuracy.

Solution

The Suzhou gas pipeline network control system consists of MOX Unity Field Controllers, CitectSCADA software, a control center, gateway stations and station RTUs. The pipeline network SCADA system has two levels, i.e. control center and station RTU. Currently, the system involves one control center, two gateway stations, thirteen industry client pressure regulating stations, eight residential pressure regulating stations, one region measure station, one medium-medium pressure regulating station and one indicated pressure regulating station, etc. The system communication is based on the VPN main communication channel and the GPRS subsidiary communication channel. In between, the indicated pressure regulating station uses optical fibre connection; the control center uses two optical fibre connection, and the other pressure regulating stations use copper cable connection. The control center LAN applies a redundant web structure. The web connects with the SCADA real-time data servers, database servers, gateway servers, operator work stations and engineer work stations through the dual network cards, which realizes data communication redundancy. Two SCADA real-time data servers are redundant for each other.

Both of the SCADA real-time data servers and the Web servers use DELL Optiplex GX280 PCs and Windows 2003 operating system. The SCADA real-time data server is configured with 500 points’ CitectSCADA software.

The history data server uses DELL PowerEdge 2850 server and SQL Server2000 standard database software to supply an opening software interface and the standard ports. RAID5 is used to copy data.

The engineer stations use DELL PC, Windows XP Professional operating system (Chinese version) and MoxGRAF configuration software.

The operator work stations use DELL PC, Windows XP Professional operating system (Chinese version) and 500 points CitectSCADA software.

Two redundant MOX Unity Field Controllers are used as the front communication machines.

If the wire VPN main communications reports an error, the system will automatically start the GPRS wireless communication to replace the VPN communication. After the VPN communications recover, the system will return to VPN main communication during which no data is lost.

Field station

All field stations use an independent MOX Unity Field Controller that is configured with built in I/O a GPRS communication module with two 10/100 Base-T Ethernet ports (RJ45 port) and four RS232/485 serial ports. There are around 300 I/O points in the field stations in total.

The MOX Unity has the following functions: field data acquisition and storage, data processing (engineering unit conversion, arithmetic and logical unit, flow totalizer), alarm monitoring, alarm processing, interlock protection, real-time communication with the control center by receiving the parameters and commands from the control center, remote parameter modification and communication with third party instruments (using serial port communication and Modbus protocol), etc.

System functions

Suzhou gas pipeline SCADA system can acquire and send real-time information to the control center via the gateway station, indicated station, industry clients, regional pressure regulating stations and RTU. Users can monitor and control the whole pipeline network, through the gas pressure and flow quantity information.

The SCADA system has the following main functions: data acquisition, data maintenance, man-made data input or deletion, dynamic technical flow display, alarm indication, event search, filing, print, history data storage, trend display, report generation and print, connection with the corporate automatic management system and data exchange, etc.

The main configuration diagrams include the pipeline network distribution diagram, technical flow diagram, indicated station integration diagram and production daily report, etc.
