Message from the Headmaster

It was hard not to be fascinated by the pomp and circumstance of the Royal Wedding last weekend, but like many other people, it was the performance and words of Bishop Michael Curry that I will perhaps remember the most. It was a mesmerizing sermon, made even more so by the completely unexpected nature of such a speech at a ‘royal’ wedding. In our assembly this morning we shared and reflected on his message and considered how the ‘power of love’ has the ability to ‘change the world’, just in the same way that the power of fire changed our world thousands of years ago. One of the millennium goals established by world leaders in 2000, was to ensure that every child in the world should be able to attend school by the year 2020. That deadline was recently extended to 2030 unsurprisingly, but there are still 246 million children in the world who cannot go to school, simply because it is not safe to do so. They live in parts of the world where conflict is a daily event and schools are either not safe or they have been destroyed by such terrible conflict. The Send My Friend to School campaign, which we support at Moyles Court, is there to remind world leaders of the pledge they made in the year 2000 and today, we all recognised, that if everybody listened and responded to Bishop Curry’s speech, then how different that statistic might be. Can love change the world? Our pupils seem to think so.

It has been a fabulous half term of activity and learning once again and it is extraordinary to think that we will be returning after the break to the final half term of the year. Where has it gone?! I hope you all have a wonderful half term and are able to enjoy some fabulous family time together and I look forward to seeing you (free of the purple sling hopefully) on Monday 4th June. Have a wonderful break.

Focus of the week

This week the Junior School have been thinking about the motto "Think before you act and speak". In our assembly this week, we discussed the importance of making sure that we think very carefully about our choice of words and what we do with our actions to avoid causing harm or upset to others. The Juniors were fantastic at reciting the motto in assembly and understand that this is their focus of the week. We had several excellent volunteers who came to the front of the hall to demonstrate taking time to think through your answer before speaking. They played a game where they had to reply to a series of questions without saying "yes" or "no" - which is easier said than done! Our volunteers did a tremendous job of getting this point across to the rest of the school and I'm sure that this is one assembly that will remain in our memory for a long time!

Mr. Babur

A busy week for Years Five and Six

It has been an extremely exciting week for Years 5 and 6! This week, we have been studying a range of interesting topics in Maths and Literacy. In Maths, we have been creating line graphs and measuring angles. In Literacy, we have been creating our own instructional leaflets. When we made our leaflets, we included: - A suitable title - a series of diagrams and captions - a list of resources - the instructions themselves! We all felt very proud and, in the words of Juliette from Year 5, "utterly satisfied" with the finished product. It made us want to teach the skills involved to others. We particularly enjoyed illustrating and colouring our leaflets. With the lovely Mrs. Walbrin (Lucy’s words), Years 5 and 6 have been studying all of the different types of angles, including obtuse, acute and reflex angles. It has been really fun and useful to use a protractor to help us do this! In the eccentric Mr. Babur's class (Olivia’s words), we have been covering data handling this week. We have been constructing and analysing our own line graphs. We enjoyed creating the graphs and gradually adding and recording the data. It has been a really enjoyable week for us in school and we are all ready for half-term!

Yr. 5 & 6 Campout

After meeting at the Sports Hall the first task was to put up all the tents. This was a mission in itself and was followed two hours later with BBQ food. The evening activities involved team building tasks using blindfolds to ‘put the sheep in the pen’, a rope swing to transfer all team members from one base to another and an introduction to air-rifle shooting. The evening ended with a night-time walk over the forest. Bed time was achieved sometime after midnight and with a few hours’ sleep we were up the next morning for breakfast at 7:30. The morning was filled with taking down the tents and learning some basic navigational skills by completing an orienteering course. We were blessed with perfect weather conditions and fun was had by all.

Performances & Celebrations! It has been a busy week in music with Year 10 undertaking their GCSE Solo performance recordings. It has been a pleasure to see them all work so diligently towards this deadline and produce recordings of an excellent standard – well done Year 10!

In the Junior School we have learnt more about the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra this week as they celebrated their 125th year of orchestral music. They have been busy learning three pieces of music written especially to celebrate this milestone birthday for BSO. Although we couldn’t get tickets to watch the concert live, we were able to stream the concert via the internet and take part in all the pieces we’ve learnt – a great afternoon! Our violin teacher Mrs. Rebecca Burns was performing in the concert, and we were fortunate enough to ask her into a lesson to answer some questions our Junior pupils had prepared for her. Thank you Mrs Burns! As part of their Arts Award, our Year 6 pupils then had the challenge of teaching the pieces they learnt to our Year 1 and 2 pupils. The ability to pass on a skill you have recently acquired is a key tool in consolidating learning and demonstrating a secure understanding. Year 6 have done an excellent job – well done!

Spanish News

Onatti Productions performed at Moyles Court School today in Spanish. The Spanish actors were fantastic at communicating the story line of 'La Casa Encantada' (the haunted house). Year 6 - 10 pupils studying Spanish enjoyed this production and were surprised that they understood everything. There were shocked faces at the scary 'Fantasma' and shrieks of laughter throughout the production. We are sure this experience has helped to build confidence in their knowledge of Spanish and it was lovely to see the children so involved especially Ricky in Year 9 and Darcie in Year 6 who ended up part of the play.

Year 9 Samsara Wheel Creations

Year 9 philosophy students took the opportunity to get out into the sunshine for some creative revision work this week. Having learnt about the Buddhist Wheel of Samsara, and the six realms it includes, students were challenged to compete to make the most imaginative Samsara Wheel they could using anything they found on the front field. It transpired to be a fantastic revision method, as well as lots of fun in the fresh air.

Horrible Histories Club

The Horrible Histories Club runs on a Tuesday after school. The pupils have an amazing hour every week with Mrs. Butterfield who brings history to life for them. This Term the pupils have been investigating the Romans.

U11 Cricket vs. Buckholme Towers

This week the under 11s cricket squad was yet again on the road to sunny Poole to play Buckholme Towers. The team has been on a roll after the close draw last week and great performances in the weeks before. We were again treated to delightful weather with charming views of Poole Park looking out across the harbour. The game this week had our team split to play two six a side matches. BHT opened to bat in both games. There were outstanding performances both behind the bat and in the field. The first ball of the game saw Sam bowl out their opening batsman. We had further wickets from Ben and Sam in the first couple of overs. This innings left us chasing 209-6. First into bat for Moyles Court were Sam and Ben. The partnership worked well as seen in previous matches and on the training ground. They got a fantastic 38 runs. George and Josh also batted well, getting runs and hitting some really lovely shots from some impressive bowling. Both teams played well and ended with both teams not all out. Man of the match this week has to go to Evan for some brilliant batting, fielding and outstanding bowling. Moyles Court won both games. One game was won 251-209 and the other slightly closer score of, 248-238. Both teams were over the moon, particularly as the pitches and conditions weren’t ideal. This leaves Moyles on a fantastic winning streak going into their next game. Well done team!!

U11 Rounders vs. Buckholme Towers

This was an excellent game of rounders. By the end of the first half Moyles Court was winning 9 – 1. This was down to some fantastic bowling by Victoria and some brilliant batting by Ruby. For the second half, however, Buckholme Towers got their game together and managed to score some more rounders. The final score was 11 – 5 to Moyles Court. Well done everyone. Players of the match were: Batting: Victoria Fielding: Hannah

Fundraising for Borneo

During the second half of this term our intrepid Year 9 pupils will be fundraising for their trip to Borneo. Every Friday after school Farah, Amber, Joe, Ben and Bobby will be holding a tuck shop selling a selection of different sweets, drinks and snacks. For Sports Day on Friday 22nd June they will be face painting for a donation. Thank you very much in advance for supporting them in their endeavours.

Boarders’ News

On Saturday morning the boarders started off with a cake decorating competition. The challenge was to design three styles including Best of British (Royal Wedding option), Chocolate Heaven and Emoji cakes. There were lots of amazing designs, but Mrs. Pragnell judged and decided Joe’s wedding cake and Ural’s British cake won their category. Lea, Abdul and Jago made amazing Chocolate Heaven cakes and finally Trevor made the most artistic Emoji cake. We then had a salsa workshop with Mrs. Constantin, a garden chill-out and a karaoke competition. Natapat’s score is still unbeaten!

FoMS News

Dear Parent’s, Guardian’s and Friends We are pleased to announce that Friends of Moyles Court School have organised a clothes & shoe collection with Bag2School. Bag2School is the UK’s leading textile recycler and fundraiser working with schools and since its inception in 2001 it has now paid out over £27 million. As well as raising funds for Friends of Moyles Court School it also helps the environment by helping to divert unwanted textiles away from landfill. A recent DEFRA report has shown that textile collection schemes are helping to reduce the volume of textiles discarded as municipal solid waste. However it is a fact that as a nation we still send 350,000 tonnes of textiles to landfill every year. By getting involved in our Bag2School collection, you have an opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate unwanted textiles in the bag provided – this can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), hats, belts, handbags and soft toys, (please refer to http://uk.bag2school.com/ for full details). In addition to raising funds it will also raise awareness amongst the children of the benefits of recycling and reuse. If you fill the donation bag more are available from Reception or you can use any other bag to donate your items - don’t forget to ask grandparents, friends and neighbours to have a sort out as well! Bag2School will be collecting from Moyles Court School on Monday 4th June. Please bring your bag (or bags!) and leave outside the Sports Hall by 9am and help us raise ever more funds then last year for the exciting projects the Friends of Moyles Court School are planning for the children!! Many thanks indeed for helping us with this unique fundraising opportunity from us all!

Second hand uniform news

PE KIT AMNESTY - out with the old, in with the new! From September 2018, all students will be expected to wear the new Moyles Court PE kit, introduced at the beginning of September 2017. We were given a year's grace to grow out of old tracksuits and socks, and that period is shortly to come to an end - on the last day of this term. At the time of writing, there is no second hand 'new' kit available from the second hand uniform shop at school, so all uniform items need to be sourced from the uniform shop in West Moors. Endeavouring to keep with the recycling theme, I have found a local collection point for a fabulous charity (The Christina Noble Children's Foundation, Registered Charity Number: 1007484) who are able to accept clean, usable PE tracksuits and socks which get sent out to impoverished children in Mongolia. Sadly, neither 'Bags to School' nor clothing banks can accept our old uniform items as they carry the school logo. If you would like to see your child's old PE kit go to a worthy cause, please bring your WASHED (only) items into school before Friday 29th June, and I will deliver them to my local collection point.

Thank you all for your support and efforts to recycle!
