     The central government under Seventh Schedule can pass the legislation

    on shipping and navigation on Inland Waterways (IW)

     The government previously had declared five inland waterways as

    National Waterways

     The act declares additional 101 inland waterways into National

    waterways (apart from repealing the previous five acts)

     The IW has immense potential for passenger and cargo transportation

     India has more than 14500 kms stretch of inland waterways but the

    transportation by this method is around 3%

     India has a coastline of greater than 7500 kms

     This project aims to develop port infrastructure

     Expected to attract huge investments

     The project includes

     modernization of our ports and islands

     setting up of coastal economic zones

     new major ports

     fish harbours

     One of the objectives is to connect ports with inland waterways

     Majority of the investment in development of the ports is expected from the government whereas the development of islands and tourism is expected from the private sector through PPP
