I joined this hospital when it was a provider for Oesophago-gastric cancer surgery for
majority of the Black Country population. However the cancer services moved to
Birminghamas part of a centralisation process,which promptedmymove toDerby. I did

year to perform Oesophago-gastric cancer resections and later at University Hospital of
CoventryandWarwickshire.

• Predicting outcomes after Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication based on pre-
operativeclinicalandinvestigativefeatures.ResultspresentedatASGBI.
• I supervised a final yearmedical student to conduct a large study involving 1000
patients.ThiswasaPatientChoiceEvaluationstudyforreferralsunderthe‘choose
and book’ system, OPD consultation and therapeutic procedure. Approval was
obtainedfromtheethicscommittee.Statisticalanalysiswasdone.Theresultsofthe
studyhavebeen receivedverywell and thesehavebeenpresentedon2 separate
forumsat theASGBI (Associationof SurgeonsofGBand Ireland) inBournemouth.
The Trust awarded this effort with the Ron Grimly Award for the Best Research
Projectfortheyear.Wearelookingtopublishtheresults.

• I have completed a patient questionnaire based survey for the complications of
openinguinalherniarepair inthepast5years.This involvedthestudyofoutcome
on over 2500 patients operated within the trust and perhaps one of the biggest
studiesof its type. This hadbeenapprovedby theethics committee and received
financial funding approval from the trust R&D department. The results were
presentedintheASGBI,Liverpool2010.
• I performed a nationwide (UK) questionnaire survey about the management of
acute pancreatitis. This was presented at the Association of Surgeons of Great
BritainandIrelandannualscientificmeetingatBournemouthinMay2008.
! TheuseofAPACHE-II (Day-1post-operative), POSSUM,P-POSSUMandO-POSSUM
forevaluatingoutcomesforOesophago-gastricoperationsandalsocomparinglocal

This was a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the results of peri-operative warming
using Inditherm Mattress compared to intra-operative warming alone using Bair-Hugger

The primary goal in themanagement of an acute painful sickle cell episode is to

painful sicklecellepisodes forpeoplepresentingathospital isvariable throughout
the UK, and is a frequent source of complaints. This quality standard covers the
managementofsicklecellacutepainfulepisodeinpeopleinhospitalfromthetime
ofpresentingtohospitaluntilthetimeofdischarge.
4. VaricoseVeinManagement(QS67)–August2014
The quality standard is expected to contribute to improvements in the following
outcomes:qualityof life forpeoplewith varicose veins, progressionof venous leg
disease, which includes complications from varicose veins and varicose vein
recurrence.
5. AcuteCoronarySyndromes(includingmyocardialinfarctions)(QS68)–Sept2014 This quality standard covers the diagnosis and management of acute coronary
syndromes (includingmyocardial infarction) in adults aged 18years and over. The
quality standard is expected to contribute to improvements in the following
outcomes: deaths from cardiovascular diseases, length of hospital stay, adverse
effectsofinterventions(forexample,bleedingandstroke)andincidenceoffurther
heartattacks.
6. HeadInjury(QS74)–October2014
The quality standard is expected to contribute to improvements in the following
outcomes:mortalityafterheadinjuryandrecoveryafterheadinjurywithguidance
on CT scan timings, Cervical spine imaging, early reporting by radiologistwithin 1
hourofscanandrehabilitation.
7. FertilityProblems(QS73)–October2014
Thisquality standard covers theassessmentand treatmentof fertilityproblems in
people with explained or unexplained infertility or people preparing for cancer

This quality standard covers the management of urinary incontinence in women

This quality standard covers the prevention, assessment and management of
pressure ulcers in all settings, including hospitals, care homes with and without
nursing and people's own homes. It covers people of all ages: neonates, infants,

10. UrinarytractInfectionsinAdults(QS90)–June2015
This quality standard covers the management of suspected community-acquired
bacterial urinary tract infection in adults aged 16 years and over. This includes

employed as a substantive Consultant General/Upper GI surgeon with advanced
