Our History and Philosophy

of EducationWoodbrook College is a voluntary co-educational secondary school. It wasfounded by the Irish Christian Brothers in1956 but is now managed by a Board ofManagement and along with all of theother Christian Brothers Schools, is part ofthe Edmund Rice Schools Trust (ERST).

The main object of the Trust is to ensureand foster the advancement of educationand to further the aims and purposes ofCatholic education in the Edmund Ricetradition. The educational approach inWoodbrook College, mirrors that of all theschools in the trust, and can be expressedin the following five key elements:

WOODBROOK COLLEGE offers a wide range of subjects at both higher and ordinary level tomeet the needs of all of our students. All students are actively encouraged to follow the higherlevel course if we feel they are capable of doing so.

The core curriculum subjects offeredat Junior Certificate level are:

Junior Cycle students are also allocated time for Computer Studies and short courses

Once students have completed their Junior Certificate theyfollow the Transition Year Programme (4th year). This is avibrant and exciting programme offering students a mix ofacademic subjects to help them make the transition fromjunior cycle to senior cycle, combined with a full and excitingprogramme of activities and experiences.

CLASS TUTOREach first year and second yearclass group has a Class Tutor. Theclass tutor’s role is the pastoral careof each student. The class tutor willget to know each of their studentsand will take a special interest ineach child’s progress and wellbeing.

YEAR HEADEach Year group has a Year Head.The year head also has a pastoralcare role but in addition hasparticular responsibility formonitoring the behaviour ofstudents in their year group. Theyear head is the main point ofcontact between the home and theschool.

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORThe guidance counsellor liaisesregularly with pupils and theirparents and also with the Principal,Deputy Principal, SchoolPsychologist, resource teacher, yearheads, class tutors and individualstaff members about the welfare ofpupils. The School GuidanceCounsellor has a pastoral role withineach class and year group and on aone-to-one basis with each student.The guidance counsellor hasdeveloped a dedicated programmefor each year group.

PASTORAL CARE TEAMThe Pastoral Care Team has apastoral role within each class andyear group and on a one-to-onebasis with each student. The school

LEARNING SUPPORTWoodbrook strives to ensure that allstudents, irrespective of their ability,are enabled to acquire personal,social and academic skills, to fullyparticipate in the life of the schooland to achieve the level of successthey are able for. Some of our pupilsmay fall below the averageacademic ability range or may havespecific learning difficulties andspecial educational needs. Ourobjective is to provide extra tuitionand help to these students in theareas of most need but especiallyMathematics and English. Care isalso taken to monitor their progressin all subjects. The guidancecounsellor and learning support co-ordinator will also assist thesestudents in obtaining subjectexemptions where appropriate andwith reasonable accommodationsfor certificate examinations.Learning support is co-ordinatedthrough our dedicated learningsupport centre within the school.

MENTOR AND BUDDYPROGRAMMEEach 1st year student is assigned a5th year mentor/buddy to help themmake the transition from primary tosecondary school successfully.These mentors/buddies are aninvaluable source of support to thenew 1st year students.

Recognition of the efforts and achievementsof individual students is a very important part oflife here at Woodbrook College and includes:� Annual academic and sports awards ceremony� Transition Year awards ceremony� 6th year Student of the Year and

A report containing the gradesreceived in each subject as well ascomments relating to progress,behaviour and attendance is sent toparents/guardians as soon aspracticable after these tests havebeen completed.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESWoodbrook College places a large emphasis on thedevelopment of the whole person and places animportant emphasis on extra-curricular sports andactivities. The range of activities ensures that no studentwhatever their talents, likes or dislikes will be left out.

HOMEWORKIt is school policy to set and monitor homework regularly. Homework reinforcesclass work and encourages pupils to take responsibility for their own learning. Aspart of the home/school relationship each pupil is issued with a homework journalwhich is monitored by the Class Tutor/Year Head and the parents/guardians.

At Woodbrook College we endeavour to promote a healthier, litter-freeenvironment for our school community. Recycling of glass, paper, cardboard,plastic, aluminium, as well as organic waste matter is expected from all pupils.There are designated bin stations in the school, each consisting of:

The Green-Schools committee, consisting of members of staff and pupils hasalready achieved two Green Flags awarded by An Taisce for litter and energyconservation and are currently working towards our third green flag. The aimof the Green-Schools committee is to create an awareness of joint responsibilityfor taking care of our environment. We hope to achieve this by continuing theefforts at reducing, reusing and recycling in our school.

� Fun events for first years to help them form new friendshipsand bonds in their new school.

� Fundraising events.� Organisation and running of themed weeks.� Assisting with school functions.� Acting in an advisory capacity on school policy and

curriculum.� Keeping proper books of account and records of all

meetings.

Our school library contains a wide range of books andmagazines as well as a number of computers forstudent use. The library is open during lunch times forquiet study/reading as well as for the playing of boardgames.

As part of the NationalLiteracy andNumeracy Strategy,all students areexposed to a greateremphasis on theimprovement anddevelopment ofliteracy and numeracyskills. Word of theWeek, DropEverything and Read,Maths Challenge andLibrary time are justsome of the regularactivities organisedeach week forstudents.

The aim of the Student Council is to promote the interests ofthe school and the involvement of pupils in the affairs of theschool, in co-operation with the Board of Management,parents and teachers. One pupil is elected from each class torepresent the students in their class on the council. At thebeginning of each academic year, the new officers forChairperson, Secretary and Treasurer are formally elected.The council is monitored and assisted by a member of staff. Inaddition to its monthly meetings, the council undertakes anumber of projects:

SUPERVISED STUDY/HOMEWORK CLUB

Supervised study which is available to allstudents from 2nd to 6th year operates from3.45pm to 5.45pm on four days of the weekand gives students an opportunity to studyand/or do homework in a quiet, supervisedenvironment. Homework club is available for 1stand 2nd year students on three days of theweek from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
