Will ’76 and Libby Cromley ’77 share fond memories of falling in love at Newberry, making valuable connections, and expanding horizons through liberal arts education.Will, a third-generation car dealer, and Libby, a former tech school professor, have been married forty-two years. Though they grew up in nearby towns, Will and Libby said they probably wouldn’t have met if they hadn’t come to Newberry College. They met through their involvement in Greek Life. He was Theta Chi. She was Kappa Delta.

“My big sister in the sorority introduced us,” she said. “She set us up on a date. Never dated anybody else after that.”

During their time as students, the two remained heavily involved on campus. For them, forging relationships was one of the most rewarding aspects of their time at Newberry.

“After my senior year in high school, my father said, ‘I want you to go over there and do the best you can, but the people you meet and the friends you make at college will mean far more to you in life than anything else you’re going to bring back home,’” he said. “And he was right.”

Their college days also opened a lot of doors for them, expanding their interests beyond their majors.

“A liberal arts education is so beneficial because that got me interested in art – I do watercolor painting – and singing in my church choir and in the Lexington County Choral Society,” she said.

For Will and Libby, Newberry provided not only education for a career, but education for life.

Frank Snyder ’70 reflects on how attending a small liberal arts college provided connections and skills that have made meaningful differences throughout his life.The relationships Frank made at Newberry have reappeared at nearly every pivotal moment. From attending graduate school, to beginning and advancing his career in alcohol and drug counseling, to courting Lynn, his wife of forty-one years, the Scarlet and Gray were there.

“It’s amazing when you just look at the connections that spread out in life for you,” he said.

While a student majoring in Business Administration, Frank wrote for the school newspaper, coordinated intramural sports, and played basketball. He and his teammates still get together once a year to play golf and “tell a lot of lies.”

“My four years at Newberry were wonderful years,” he said.

Forty-nine years after graduation, Frank remains an active player in the future of his alma mater. In addition to giving annually, he has chaired the Foundation Board of Visitors, and he currently serves on the Board of Trustees.

“When I graduated, I was not done with the College,” he said. “My status has simply changed, in my mind, from a student to an alumnus. That meant that I had an obligation to pay it forward.

“Newberry College, when I graduated, did not owe me anything. But I owed, and I still owe, Newberry College a debt of gratitude for the foundation it provided me as I headed forward into my career and personal life.”

Bernard ’76 and Barbara Davis ’79 have lifelong connections to Newberry College, and just as Newberry shaped their lives, they continue to have lasting impacts on their alma mater.

“It’s not where you go, but it’s what you do when you get there.”

Margaret Kelly’s words still ring in Barbara’s ears from her days at Newberry High School, when Barbara said she had no intention of attending Newberry College. There were no sports for women.

But through Margaret’s husband, alumni director Philip T. Kelly, Barbara met with athletics, admission, and academics, and laid the groundwork for women’s basketball as a club sport. Softball soon followed.

“She tells you about basketball, she only came over here because I was over here,” joked Bernard, her high school sweetheart, a college senior at the time.

Bernard’s post-secondary plans weren’t originally Scarlet and Gray, either. He intended to take an out-of-state track scholarship, but after learning the scholarship had been eliminated, his sister talked him into going to Newberry.

“So we came over here and they just welcomed us with open arms,” he said.

Bernard took his degree in Business Administration and Economics into retail business and sales analysis for fourteen years, and then he answered God’s call to ministry. Barbara has over thirty years’ experience as a financial advisor.

Since their wedding in Wiles Chapel, the pair has remained firmly connected to Newberry. Barbara has been president of the Lettermen’s Club, she volunteered with a student investment organization, and she currently serves on the Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board of Visitors.

“The question is not why we give,” Barbara said. “My question is ‘why don’t other people give?’ Because Newberry has meant so much to me.”

As Newberry’s Nursing Department enters its second decade and a new era of growth and innovation, ample and upgraded facilities are essential to help provide the best possible experience for students preparing to enter the medical field. A new Nursing facility, at the corner of College and Evans streets, will help meet industry demands while equipping the College and our students for future success.

Five years since we began Scaling the Summit, Newberry’s first comprehensive campaign, we have made tremendous strides toward our goal at the highest peak. As we reach the next plateau on the journey to the top, we take stock of our progress and plot the route ahead. With $24 million raised toward our $35 million goal, and with two capital projects soon within our grasp, we are closer to the top than ever before.

— officially known as Stadium Phase One — comprises an Athletic Performance Center in the north end zone, and new, energy-efficient LED field lighting. The lights were installed this summer, and this facility will be ready prior to the beginning of the 2020 field hockey and football seasons. Stadium Phase Two, an Athletic Field House on Setzler’s east side, is expected to launch in the near future.

Alex Quintero ’15 credits Newberry with giving him the skills to be successful, and believes his gifts create a path for future alumni.

“Something I learned from a lot of my professors is to go above and beyond,” Alex said.

As a student, Alex put this lesson to good use as a member of the Highlander Battalion ROTC, the Student Government Association, and as an Alpha Leader for freshman orientations. Newberry’s passion, purpose, and personal attention allowed him to develop leadership skills in a family environment.

“With Newberry, professors have compassion and empathy for the students. And it was just a really nice feeling knowing that everyone cared,” he said.

Since graduation, Alex has put his Business Administration degree to work as a dispatch logistics manager, coordinating supply chains and managing a fleet of semi trucks. He says his time as a student worker in the Advancement office helped prepare him for his career.

“When you have a process or a problem that you need to solve and there’s not a handbook… you kind of just figure it out. That on-the-fly learning is a big thing I took away from that,” he said.

Having been on both sides of College operations, Alex has seen what his support means for his alma mater and for students making their own way.

“From being someone who worked in Alumni Relations, I saw how much they actually did reach out to alumni and to students,” he said. “I give because Newberry College truly does appreciate it.”

George and Agnes Routon have called Newberry home for two decades. He’s in finance and insurance. She’s a former nurse. They believe in the good a small liberal arts college can do.Since moving to Newberry twenty years ago, George and Agnes have supported the mission and people of Newberry College, starting with George’s good friend and business partner, Eric Wells ’87.

“Since I’ve been running around with Eric for the last twenty years, I’ve gotten acquainted with a lot of Newberry graduates, and every one of them is a credit to their profession, and a credit to the community,” George said. “And that’s one of the reasons we live here in Newberry.”

George, a native to the Atlanta area, has been in insurance and financial planning for fifty-five years.
