Gas in a Syringe imageWhen particles get pushed closer together because of pressure, the particles get pushed into a smaller space. The air increases in density. Density refers to the mass of material in a given space.

Notice: The syringe on the right has more dense air. The particles have been pushed closer together, so there are more particles in the same amount of space. More air pressure means more density.

The air particles haven’t changed. The space between them is smaller, and the air becomes more dense (more particles per unit volume).

Equilibrium

Think of air pressure as air particles hitting things.

What will happen if a bottle full of compressed air is suddenly opened?

When air moves from an area of high pressure to one of low pressure, it is returning to equilibruim.

Think of the word equal when you think of equilibrium. If air is under high pressure in one area and has less space to move around in, if it is able to escape, air particles will flow from the area of high pressure to low pressure until the pressure or air density is equal.
