Thematic Focus Unit 1

• In Unit 1, students will read selections which explore various ways in which people, relationships, places, and societies change over time. This unit contains 2 parts, and selections in both parts contribute to the unit theme by examining how a variety of characters are affected by great changes in their lives. Selections in Part 1 (The Price of Progress)

emphasize the effects of technological progress on characters in a number of settings.

Selections in Part 2 (Cultural Crossroads) emphasize the changes in individuals and their relationships that are caused by cultural differences.

fax machines, televisions—what will they be like 10 or 20 years from now? Will the technological wonders of today be collecting dust in a closet?
