(Soldiers moving towards Messina)WHY/HOW- The Allies were pressured by Stalin to invade France, but Roosevelt and Churchill chose to invade Italy instead. The Allies fought to take over Sicily and that was their first move in Italy. They then took over Palermo, and Sicily was taken over by Germans. The Allies took Sicily back and forced Mussolini to resign. Italy then surrendered and Mussolini was freed by the Germans. The Allies moved and took Northern Italy from Germany, and they then had a direct passage to Germany, and after they found Mussolini, only Germany and Japan now stood in their way. The invasion of Italy was a major segway into D-Day and The Battle if the Bulge.
