The 2013 skeet season is long past and it was certainly great fun! I trust that each of you had a successful season, enjoying the competition and your many friendships. The Michigan State shoot in August was a huge suc-cess. We had 121, 4 gun shoot-ers in attendance! Many people contributed to the success of the shoot! Special thanks to the Detroit Gun Club: Scott, Deb and all the staff including the kitchen, servers and pullers. In addi-tion, recognition for the Board of Directors, individually and collectively for their efforts to make the State Shoot successful. Congratulations to all the win-ners or those recognized for their shooting success. Thanks to all that attended! If you missed the State Shoot, please plan to attend next year!

Please check the MSA website for the results of the Board of Di-rectors elections. Congratulations to those incumbents that were elected. On behalf of the entire MSA we welcome Denny Tanis to the Board of Directors!

The World Shoot was held from September 27- October 4. Michigan was very well repre-sented with approximately 20 attending! That is great! David Scott prevailed as the 12 gauge

World Champion! Congratula-tions David…well done! In ad-dition, many placed in class and or in their concurrents. Please check the NSSA website for the shoot results. The World Shoot is always great fun. If you have not attended, place it on your sched-ule for next year.

The Board of Directors held a meeting on November 2, 2013. Before the meeting, Trish Magyar provided the Referee’s Clinic. We have many Certified Referees in Michigan! The Shoot Scheduling Meeting was held and proceeded very well with only a few shoot changes. The MSA 2014 Shoot Calendar has been posted on the MSA website, as well as in this newsletter. So please check for the shoots that you will be attend-ing.

There are 18 clubs in the MSA that threw registered targets in 2013. The number of targets thrown in 2013 totaled 567,875. That is an increase of approxi-mately 20,000 compared to 2012. The game of skeet in Michigan is growing! This is evidenced by the increase in targets thrown, the number of clubs participating and our membership, which is 633, as of November 2, 2013. This in-cludes 26 new members and 140 new Junior shooters since January 1, 2013. Many thanks to all the MSA members that give of their time to assist/coach the youth in our sport. The SCTP reports indi-cate that participation is growing rapidly.

1) The MSA Board continued their reduction in the minimum target requirements for the 2014 shooting year – November 1, 2013 to October 31, 2014. The new minimum target requirement are: 12 Gauge, 20 Gauge, 28 Gauge and .410 are 800 targets; Doubles are 500 targets. The MSA may change these in the future. The NSSA returned to original standards in 2012.

2) Cost of targets to the MSA will remain at two (2) cents and the NSSA will be four (4) cents per target.

The MSA offers a lifetime membership for $300.00. There is also a senior lifetime membership for those over 60 for $200.00. If you are interested in buying a lifetime membership, please see Kathy Warner.

The Next Board of Directors meeting will be held on April 5, 2014 after the shoot-offs at Detroit Gun Club. Meetings are open and any MSA member may attend.

As stated in the previous editions of this newsletter, we will not be mailing this newsletter any longer. So, if your friends don’t have a computer or email, remember to print them off a copy so they can keep up to date on our association news. CANDIDATE INFORMATION SHEET FOR M.S.A. HALLOF FAME The M.S.A. Hall of Fame has two categories under which nominees may be considered; Shooting Achievements and Sustaining Contributions (Chet Crites Service Award). Candidates should be submitted to the M.S.A. Hall of Fame Committee for consideration. Nominees must have been residents of the State of Michigan and M.S.A. members, in good standing, for at least 10 years. They must be 50 years of age or older, or have won a World Shoot Open Title, or have had their shooting career interrupted by an untimely death or disablement. The Committee will select, in any given year, no more than two nominees for Shooting Achievement, and one for the Chet Crites Service Award. If a nominee is not selected, his/her name will be considered again in the future. On Saturday Evening, August 24, 2013, Trish Magyar was inducted into the Michigan Skeet Association Hall of Fame. This event took place at the Saturday night banquet at the Detroit Gun Club. Below is the word-ing that was placed on her plaque which now hangs, with all the others before her, in the Hall of Fame room at the DGC. Congratulations Trish! You have done a wonderful job of volunteering for the MSA.

Trish Magyar grew up at skeet ranges, but didn’t pick-up a shotgun herself until asked by a shipmate in 1982 if she wanted to go skeet shooting. She jumped at the opportunity, and has been an active shooter and NSSA member ever since. Trish has unselfishly volunteered her time from the very start; you can usually find her helping out at just about every shoot she attends, whether it is assisting with registration, posting scores or organizing shoot-offs.

Trish has a long list of contributions from the state level through to NSSA’s Executive Committee. Volunteer positions she has held include:

Additionally, Trish created and maintains the Michigan Skeet Association website, keeping our membership up-to-date on the Association’s activities and news, and is a resource for our members and clubs.

Trish is also a member of the Armed Forces Skeet Association Hall of Fame and the National Skeet Shoot-ing Association Hall of Fame, both for their respective service awards. In recognition of her continued contri-butions to the sport of skeet shooting, Trish Magyar is hereby inducted into the Michigan Skeet Association’s Hall of Fame.

troit Gun Club hosted yet another memorable Morrissey Motor State Open, thanks to the gener-osity of our sponsors, the Mor-rissey family – Mike, Melodie and Tom.

The shoot was near capacity, and included entries from as far away as Australia. Overall, the weather conditions couldn’t have been better, even with slightly breezy conditions and some of the dreaded “white-puffies” for the Doubles Event Thursday. A lone 100 posted by Ben Gallup put him on the top of the podium. Four 99s shot-off for the remain-ing two spots, with Robert

Paxton besting the field for the Runner-up position, Clay Bald-win, 3rd; Dan Morris AAA1, and John Fournier AA1. Ninety-eights shot-off for A Class, with Quentin Smith the victor. Classes B, C and D were won outright by James Barnard (98) and also Junior Champ, Craig Hintermeis-ter (94) and Aaron Walton (94), respectively. Lady Champion was Trish Magyar; and Sub Junior Champion, Hunter Staples.

Event was shot under pretty nice conditions (by Detroit standards), with nary a cloud in the sky and only a light wind, resulting in 11 perfect scores. By the time shoot-offs rolled around, however, the

wind had picked up a tad and we had a smattering of puffy clouds, just to make it a little more chal-lenging! Much to everyone’s delight, and no surprise to him, Junior shooter Gordon Novak claimed the 12 Gauge Cham-pionship over Jim Nierzwick, Runner-up; Ben Gallup, 3rd; John Herkowitz, AAA1; Duane Lam-ley, AA1; and, Richard Smelko, A1. Billy “No Toes” Nielsen won

B Class outright with his 99; Bill Saylor won his 98 shoot-off for C1; Craig Hintermeister was D1 with a 97; and young Michael Stewart won E Class with an impressive 93 and his first 25 straight, to boot! Friday afternoon and Saturday morning with nine shooters post-ing 100 straights. Conditions for Saturday’s shoot-offs were much improved over the previous day, with yet another Junior shooter claiming the Championship – Quentin Smith dispatched Todd Bender, Runner-up; Bob O’Brien, 3rd; Kurt Grates, AAA1; and Jim Reese, AA1, to claim the 20 Gauge title. Other class winners were Sam (father) over Samuel (son) Marks in a 3-way shoot-off of 99s for A; John Massman’s 99 sealed the deal for A1; Craig Hintermeister’s 96 assured him of C1; and (young) Michael Stewart shot another great score of 92 for D1. Susan Huszai was Lady Champion with her 99; and Hunter Staples, Sub Junior Champion with a 97. At this stage of the competition, there were three shooters 2-by: Bender, Gallup and Magyar.

the best conditions of the week-end – clear blue skies and no wind – resulting in FIVE perfect scores with the “baby bore”, in-cluding another first for a Junior shooter, Jared Davenport. Nice shooting, Jared! And, there were TWO Juniors with 100s.

Even with perfect conditions for the shoot-offs, the .410 be-ing what it is, it didn’t take long stations to decide all five places with Sam Armstrong emerging the Champion over Clay Bald-win, Runner-up; Jared Davenport, 3rd and Junior Champion; John Herkowitz, AAA1; and James Barnard AA1. Shoot-offs of 97s were needed for BOTH A and B class, with John Fournier winning A and Kyle Wierzbicki winning B. Bill Brown (C) and Sasha deBorgrave (D) won their classes outright. for the High Over All champion-ship. It was decided to shoot a full round of doubles from 3, 4 and 5 – total score – to determine the winner. At the completion of the round, Baldwin was perfect and the victor over Herkowitz, Runner-up, and Magyar, 3rd. Four 396s shot-off for AAA, with Kurt Grates the winner in that contest. Dan Morris won his shoot-off of 393s for AA; and Glen Walker (A), Josh Penvose (B); Doug Keister, (C); Sasha deBorgrave (D) and Michael Stewart (E) were alone at the top of their classes. Susan Huszai claimed the Lady Championship in her shoot-off; Aaron Walton was Sub Junior Champion; and, Quentin Smith, Junior Champion. Mike and Melodie Morrissey pre-sented special awards of a Water-ford carafe to the HOA Champion and a Waterford crystal bowl to the Lady HOA Champion, which will be proudly displayed by the recipients for years to come.

July 27: The 15th anniver-sary of this event was held at the Flushing Michigan Club. The weather was great and the shoot-ing better. George Gilliam always offers shooters an even opportu-nity at the added cash and prizes. There was money for event win-ners and class winners. Everyone was raring to get started and go after those targets.

The Doubles event was won by Jim Nierzwick (94), with Runner-up George Gilliam (93). A1 went to Mike Palmatier; Ed Howe took B1; Bill Saylor, B2; and Doug Haines B3. Brian Long took C1; Jim Schultz, C2 and Gary Schultheis C3. D1 was won by Christina Baning.

The 12 gauge event was taken by George Gilliam with 99. Jim Schultz took runner-up with a nice 98. AA1 went to Jim Nierz-wick and AA2 to Mike Palmatier. Ed Howe took A1. B1 went to Bill Saylor; B2 to Pete Panta-lena; and B3 to Rick Trawinski. C1 was won by Christina Baning; C2 by Jessica Taylor; and C3 by Rich Montel. D1 went to Austin Coe; D2 to Jane Carpenter; and D3 to Paul Bontrager. E1 was taken by Dylan Dick.

We then headed upstairs to have dinner provided by George and Lynn Gilliam. A special thanks to Lynn for the great pies we had with dinner. They were great!! Folks began to bid on the Calcutta, and when we were done, headed down to the fields for the Scrap shoot. Lots of fun abounded as several of the shoot-ers had never shot scrap before. When all was done we gathered

for a few drinks and fun and before you knew it the day was over.

Sunday awoke to a beautiful, hot day and the 20 gauge event was underway. As beautiful as the day seemed to be there were no perfect scores again. Jim Nierzwick shot a nice 99 for event, and Rick Trawinski took runner-up. George Gilliam too AA1. Pete Pantalena took A1; Ed Howe took A2; and Bill Say-lor was A3. Rich Montel took B1; Bob Refice took B2; and Chrissy Baning took B3. Jessica Taylor C1; Gary Schultheis too C2; and Jim Schultz was C3. D1 went to Austin Cole.

Danny and Jake, did a fantas-tic job of throwing great targets; the crew of outstanding referees gave the shooters the targets when they called for them; and the back-loaders were stealth-like keeping the machines full and pads swept. Our new chef,

Anthony, along with Debbie, and their kitchen staff and waitresses, made sure that no one went hungry (or thirsty!); and the shoot staff of Ann and Kathy, greeted the shooters with cheery smiles, and made sure the scores were promptly posted and the shoot-off sheets ready to go after the last shot was fired.

We like to boast that we have “Too Much Fun” – as if such a thing were impossible! But anyone who has ever attended the

Motor State Open will tell you we do have fun. The Motor State isn’t just about shooting; it’s also about the friends we make and have made and look forward to seeing each year. We hope that those of you who haven’t ex-perienced the hospitality of the Detroit Gun Club will do so at the 2014 Motor State or our Sep-tember shoot, the Kasle Family Charity Open. We can promise you one thing, you will have “too much fun”!

It was a great weekend spent with good friends and we had lots of fun. Thanks go out to George for such a great time and special thanks to our great referees. We hope to see you next year!

Motor homes and Trailers began to arrive mid-week and by Friday, August 23, 2013, at Detroit Gun Club, Scott Behnke had prepared for the annual gathering of the flocks. The day was beautiful with sun and blue skies. Winds and rain had become a regular at the State shoot in frequent years. But this year would go down in the books as “simply marvelous.”

Friday started out with the Doubles event and out to the fields they went. The shoot-offs were many in this event but was taken by a 99 from Zachary Hoiles. Runner-up was determined after Dave Scott and Howie Bailey shot off their 98’s, giving Dave the title and Howie 3rd. Friends gathered to play cards, visit from RV to RV or just gather round a campfire and the day was over. Many of us spent time celebrating Jerry Barefoot’s birthday with a great food pro-vided by Sharon.

Saturday started out absolutely beautiful and that is the way it would stay. We started with the .410 event and it brought no per-fect scores. Dan Adam took the Championship with a 99, after a shoot-off with Hunter Staples and David Scott. Hunter took runner-up and Dave took 3rd place. One-half of the 28 gauge would be shot on Saturday and the remainder on Sunday morn-ing.

Saturday night at the State Shoot is always special with many awards given out. This is also the night that we do the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony when we have a candidate to enter the Hall of Fame. This year the honor went to Trish Magyar. Trish’s service to the Michigan Skeet Association is unmatched and we were proud to honor her with the Chet Crites Service Award. See the wording of the plaque, and picture, of Trish’s induction elsewhere in this issue.

After our dinner and all the fix-ins, no one is able to move, so the festivities start. We started our awards by giving out several First 100’s certificates and our All State Team Awards. Congratula-tion to Bill Saylor for winning the Lou Raden Award by shooting 9,950 registered targets in 2012. Congrats Bill! Congratulations also to Bay County Conservation & Gun Club for 2012 Club of the Year Awardee! We followed this with the Hall of Fame presenta-tion for Trish Magyar. Following this ceremony we gave awards won in shooting on Friday and Saturday. The day ended with friends gathering to discuss the day’s events and some partied into the night.

Michigan has an unusual event for the 12 gauge teams. We call it the “Friendship Teams” and we are matched by averages so that each team has an equal chance of winning. This is also great for meeting and shooting with folks from all over the state that you may not have previously known. A great experi-ence for all involved! Our winning team this year consisted of: Ron Snider: Jane Carpenter; John Glynn; Jason Johnson; and Gerald Novak. They shot 478/500.

Congratulations to Dave Scott on his 398 to take HOA. A really great score on any day. It was re-ally nice, once again, to see such a large number of “Yoopers” come down into “Troll” country. As you can see they took their fair share of awards. Thanks for com-ing so far to compete with your entire state and meet up with old friends!

The Most Improved Shooter from 2012 at the State Shoot was Garrett Curlett who went up 53 targets over last year (he was highest last year also with 33 targets). Terry Eicholtz went up 33 targets; Hunter Staples went up 24 targets; and Gerald Novak went up 22 targets. Congratula-tions to all four of you!

On August 2-3-4 Detroit Sportsman’s Congress hosted the 2013 Ted Hanaford / Great Lakes Open. The parking lot was full of campers and competitors for DSC’s summer event.

The first order of business for the weekend was the Hodgdon Powders Doubles event. Nine-teen competitors took the field in search of the first title of the weekend. Coming out victori-ous was Steve Nelson with a fine 98 to take the first title. A pair of 94’s shot off for runner up and third with Ross Szarenski defeating Mike Palmatier. Class winners were Jim Nierzwick, Ed Howe, Brian Long and Austen Fischer.

The 12 gauge Medical Weight Loss Centers event started us off on Saturday morning with 36 competitors going for the gusto. Mike Palmatier with the only 100 in the event was the champ with Kelly Vliet of Bay County com-ing in second with a 98. A pair of 97’s shot off for 3rd with Ross Szarenski edging Jim Nierzwick who finished AA-1. Other class winners were Ed Howe, Chester Kowalski, Kent Dolmyer, John Johnson and Rommel Suelan.

After lunch the Mayville Engi-neering (MEC) 28 gauge com-petitors took the field. The event

Ted Hanaford / Great Lakes Openchampion was junior shooter Aaron Walton of Western Wayne County. Aaron posted a fine 99 to take the event while Jim Nierz-wick’s 97 earned him a runner up spot; Florida transplant Bill Nielsen was in 3rd place. Class winners were A-Kelly Vliet, B-Jason Farhat, C-Austen Fischer and D went to Hart Stuehmer.

Our famous Saturday Nite Steak dinner was the next or-der of business. By the look on everyone’s face I would say that it was a hit again. If you shoot the Hanaford you have to make this part of your weekend.

With the dawn of a new day comes the Family Dentistry 20 gauge event. 99’s were the order of business of the morning with 3 of them shooting of for the championship. Coming out the victor was “Yea Jim” Nierzwick with Kent Dolmyer runner up and that Florida guy Bill Nielsen in 3rd place. Class winners were Bob O’Brien, Bill Saylor, Steve Nelson, Bill Primeau and Paul Stafford III rounding out the win-ners.

Last but not least was the Clay Delay .410 event. 34 shooters tried to conquer the little gun with Ross Szarenski taking the title. Hall of Fame member Chester Kowalski was the runner up with Paul Stafford III claiming


the 3rd spot. The class winners with the “pea shooter” were Jim Nierzwick, Bob O’Brien, Jason Farhat, Kent Dolmyer and Austen Fischer.

ambassador on October 31, 2013, with the passing of William “.410” Schymanski at the age of 73. A member of the Bay County Gun Club, Bill served on the board of directors, as vice-presi-dent, and president. His passion was seeing the club grow from a small membership and a “cabin-size” clubhouse in the 1940s to being named “Gun Club of the Year” in 2012 by the Michigan Skeet Association.

Bill was always the first to greet visitors to the club and give them a tour of the facilities. He was a staunch supporter of young shooters, and spent considerable time coaching them. Under his mentorship, the club sponsored 4-H Skeet Team, went on to be-come State Champions.

Bill shot for the “Love of the Game.” He took each day for what it was. His positive attitude, mental toughness, and excellent shooting earned him the club’s “Top Gun Award” several times.

Bill was an Army veteran and believed everyone should know how to shoot, and he taught all his kids proper gun handling and how to hunt as well as fish. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

contestants from all the states in the Zone – Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Vir-ginia – went at it over two-and-a-half days at Detroit Gun Club to determine the top shooter in Zone 3.

The weather for the entire weekend was near perfect – even the dreaded “white puffies” remained at bay. Ninety-nines were the high score in Doubles event, with Fred “Boom-boom” Tschantz the victor of Bruce Christian. The 98s took the field next to duke it out for event 3rd with Dave Starrett the winner of that contest. Class winners were: Howie Bailey (AAA); Jeff Moore (AA); Jim Nierzwick (A); Tom Considine (B); Nathan Eisenhardt (C); and Jim Rogers (D). Lady Champion was Susan Huszai; Sub-Junior Champion, Jack Beld-ing; and Junior Champion Zac Hoiles.

Expectations were high for Saturday’s, given the great shoot-ing conditions. Everyone put forth their best effort, producing six perfect scores in the 12 gauge and five in the 20 gauge. Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress hosted their first “Junior Invita-tional”. This event, sponsored by DSC members, Randy Kaszeta, David Balaj and Rick Marsh was cost free for all junior particia-pants. It consisted of 50 targets in both 12 and 20 gauges and this determined the HOA champ, run-ner up and 3rd overall and four (4) Lewis Class event winners.

With 45 shooters taking the field for the 12 gauge and 47 tak-ing for the 20 the targets began breaking. When the initial smoke cleared 2 shooters, Josh Penvose and Hunter Staples, tied with

50’s. The 12 gauge event winner was determined by a shoot off at 3-4-5 with Hunter emerging the champ.

After a lunch of pizza and pop, out came the 20 gauge shooters. In the 20 gauge 4 shooters, Gor-don Novak, Josh Penvose, John Gilliam and Zach Hoiles, posted scores of 50. When this round of smoke cleared Josh Penvose was the 20 gauge champ.

With all the shooting complet-ed the final calculations deter-mined the HOA Champ. Our HOA champ was Josh Penvose with a perfect 100 out of 100. Runner Up was Gordon Novak with John Gilliam third. Con-

gratulations also go out to all of our Lewis winners. Keep up the fine shooting as you are the future of our sport.

We at DSC want to thank all the volunteers that came out and refereed, filled houses and just did all the general stuff at a shoot that goes unnoticed. The 2014 Invitational will be August 17th, and we hope to increase spon-sorship and make it a 100 target event in both gauges. What a bet-ter way to warm up for the State Championships at the end of the month. So look in your e-mail for notifications when the time approaches so you can be guaran-teed a spot.

ting the tone for this year’s theme for the Kasle Family Open held at Detroit Gun Club September 13th-15th, in the words from Dr. Seuss, “From there to here and here to there; funny things are everywhere!” The shoot was full and, based on the AAA/AA entries, will easily be in the “Top 10” for All-American points with a difficulty factor of 63.8. Weather for the weekend was definitely “fall-like” – long pants were the preferred attire. But the wind was absent except for the doubles event and, other than a brief shower, the rain was nearly so. There were no dreaded “white-puffies”, with clear blue skies Saturday and overcast on Sunday.

Once again, Scott Behnke and his dedicated staff not only came up with a new theme, but always seem to out-do the previ-ous year’s performance... the Best-Kasle-Kolar Cup, which started as the Walker Cup thirteen years ago with the idea of put-ting some fun back into shooting, is the goal of every competitor at the shoot; winning the cup is just “icing on the cake”. Each year has had a different theme… WWF; Rock Stars; West-Side Story (Sharks vs Jets); NFL (AFC vs NFC); Heroes and Villains; NASCAR; Professional Rodeo; Pirates; the Olympics; Wood-stock; Caddy Shack; Top Shot; and Slap Shot. Roger Kasle,

Lauren Best and Kolar Arms are the sponsors of the 75-bird .410 Event 6 in which the top ten shooters compete for a beautiful Waterford Crystal trophy filled to the brim with cash. But, the shoot-off isn’t conducted under the “normal” rules. This year’s theme was Dr. Seuss, with the finalists appearing as ten of his characters, along with our MC, “The Cat in the Hat” (AKA Billy Ray Suggs), with assistance from “Thing 1” (Mike Kremski) and Thing 2 (Robert Paxton), and the referees Little Cat A (Danny) and Little Cat B (Jake). (I bet this will make a LOT of you Google the Dr. Seuss characters!) In the event you don’t know, it’s quite a big show. The fireworks done, the finale as loud as big guns; the Cat in the Hat, the stage he did yield, so all of the characters could take to the field. If you think shooting doubles is a cinch, then I suggest that you ask mean ol’ Mr. Grinch. It took more than a round to knock everyone down, even while acting like a big bunch of clowns. When everything was done, there could be only one. And, who would it be, to win the prized cup? Well it

was Todd Bender the Grinch, and it really cheered him up! Sur-prise, surprise – it was his first! I guess he just wanted to win the worst.

28 Gauge & .410Though overcast and threat-

ening rain all day, the shooting conditions were still pretty good. There were 19 100s posted in the 28 Gauge Event, including first 100 for Gerald Novak, but the rain settled in for the shoot-offs. Mark Gay claimed the Championship on the last pair of the round, with Les Turner Runner-up and James (NOT J.B.) Barnard, Third and Junior Champ. Top class finishers were: Vaillancourt (AAA); Nick Cian-ciosi (AA); Gerald Novak (A);

Program has concluded another successful season. We continue to see an increase in participa-tion. We would like to welcome Lowell High School and Saginaw Gun Club to our list of participat-ing teams. We would also like to welcome back De La Salle High School and the St Joe County Straight Shooters.

In Fall of 2011, the Michigan SCTP incorporated, and applied for a 501C(3) designation as a Non-Profit Corporation. We received approval on our applica-tion in Fall of 2012, in time to allow us to submit a grant request to the Midway Foundation. We would like to thank Larry and Brenda Potterfield for their sup-port of our program, and also for their support of junior shooting nationwide.

2013 MICHIGAN SCHOLASTIC CLAY TARGET PROGRAM

Association for again allowing us to use of their Clubhouse for the February Coaches Meeting that started off our Michigan SCTP season. This meeting gives us a chance to meet the new coaches, and renew our friendships with the returning ones. It also gives us a chance to discuss rule chang-es and share coaching tips and practices. The National SCTP program had a lot of new spon-sorship opportunities that were discussed at this meeting. We also distributed schedules for all of the 2013 Fun Shoots, and State Shoot for all of the disciplines involved in the Program.

We threw three fun shoots again this year and would like to thank Grand Blanc Huntsman’s Club, Kent County Conserva-tion League and Detroit Sports-men’s Congress for hosting these shoots. The growing size of the program makes it necessary for these clubs to close their fields to their membership to allow us

to have the facilities necessary to run our shoots. We thank these Clubs for their commitment to youth shooting, and for assem-bling the manpower necessary to host these events.

The purpose of these fun shoots is to introduce the young shooters to each other, and to provide them with the experi-ence of shooting in a competi-tive format. The coaches work with the shooters during these fun shoots to further instill gun safety and shooting fundamen-tals, as well as methods to keep the teams focused and moving. The program is a team focused program. A group can be a gun club, school district, 4-H group, boy scout or girl scout troop; or any other group that supports a youth program. This format has allowed us to squad two teams together to shoot on the same field, thus allowing the shooters



to meet each other and form last-ing friendships.

Our State Shoot format changed for 2013. We held a two day event at Detroit Gun Club on the weekend of June 15th and 16th. The senior division com-peted on Saturday and the Inter-mediate and Rookie Divisions competed on Sunday. 2013 saw both an increase in the number of teams competing and an increase in the number of athletes partici-pating. This new format resulted in two awards ceremonies, one held at the conclusion of each days shooting.

As in the past, medals were supplied by the SSSF for the top three teams in each division. The Michigan SCTP Program award-ed Savings Bonds to the top three teams. Team awards were also given to the top three finishing High School Teams in the Senior Division. It is very exciting that this program is being accepted in our High Schools. In some districts our shooters can earn varsity letters in shooting, while in other districts our program is recognized as a club sport. We continue to work with school ad-ministrators, and gun club man-agers to grow our SCTP Program. The 2014 season will see the Plymouth/Canton School district joining us as a club sport. We are

hopeful that we will be successful in bringing other school and club teams into our program as well.

We also recognize the Indi-vidual High Gun in each age division with an SCTP High Gun Belt Buckle. Lonesome Char-lie Leather Shell Pouches were awarded to the high guns in the Varsity and Junior Varsity cat-egory as well as in the Intermedi-ate Entry and the Intermediate Advanced category.

Through the generosity of three SCTP Sponsor’s we had three shotguns that were awarded to three lucky participants at the conclusion of the days events. The only requirement to be eli-gible for a gun, was that the par-ticipant had to be on the grounds when the drawing was held. We would like to thank Mark Murphy, Gerald & Julie Novak and the Saginaw Gun Club for their generous donation to the program. We would also like to thank the Pathfinders Foundation and Lauren Best for their con-tributions. These contributions allowed us to give participation t-shirts to each athlete and coach this year.

The final Event of the 2013 SCTP Shooting calendar is the National Event which was held at the World Shooting and Rec-reational Complex, in Sparta, Illinois. The skeet event was shot over four days this year, July 15th through July 18th. The National Event is a 200 target event, that was shot by each team on two of the four days, one hundred targets per day. Participation in the Skeet Event was up about 75 athletes as compared to last years event. Total participation was 600 shooters. Michigan was represented this year by teams from Flat River Conservation Club, Lowell High School, Kent County Conservation League, North Macomb Sportsman’s Club, Multi Lakes Conservation Club and Mattawan Shooting Team. The format of awards was changed this year to reflect the growth in the number of partici-pants. Awards were given to the top 5 finishing teams, as well as to the top five finishing athletes in each division.

Michigan was represented on the podium this year by the teams on the page that follows.
