‘Straight’ from the President

MSANewsVolume 17, No. 2 July 2013

It was a huge surprise to be elected as President of the Michigan Skeet Association by the Board of Directors at the November 2012 Meeting. It is an honor to represent each of you as members of the Michigan Skeet Association. The Board of Directors is always seeking every opportunity to advance the skeet game in Michigan.

The Board of Directors held their spring meeting on April 5, 2013 at the DGC. Much of the discussion centered on how the State Shoot can be made even better. Please be certain to mark your calendars for the Michigan State Shoot on August 23-25, 2013. A discussion item carried forward form last November cen-tered on the question if the AA class at the State Shoot should be continued. After significant discussion and review of the data presented, it was determined that a AAA class will be offered. However, only Class places 1-3 will receive awards. Pins for other places have been elimi-nated. In addition, the concept of changing awards was brought for-ward and from all indications, the plates that have been awarded in the past will be replaced with new awards that are much improved. The Class Champ belt buckles may be redesigned to make them even better.

The MSA membership continues to remain constant at about 530 members for 2013. According to the latest informa-tion, we have gained 75 new Junior Shooters and 6 new members since January 1, 2013. Having the youth shooters partici-pate will only advance skeet and the MSA. Welcome to all new members! We must recognize the many MSA members that give of their time to work with the youth and encourage participation through instruction and leader-ship. Michigan Skeet Association Club of the Year – 2012The Board of Directors set guidelines for Club of the Year. The most objective measure would be the

greatest increase in registered targets from one year to the next, since we want to promote more registered shooting. The Board approved the following guidelines (listed below) for awarding the MSA Club of the Year.

The 2012 MSA Club of the year is Bay County Conservation/Gun Club with a 52.41% increase in targets. The second place finisher was Detroit Sportsman’s Congress with a 48.34% increase; and in third place, North Ottawa Rod and Gun Club with a 18.56% increase. The award for the “Club of the Year” will be presented at the 2013 State Shoot. Congratulations to everyone!

Congratulations to Bill Saylor Michigan’s High Volume Shooter in registered targets in 2012. This year marks the first time in twelve years for a new individual to win the Lou Raden Memorial High Target Award.

As it says on the trophy in Lou’s own words, “These shooters pay little heed to weather conditions and here in Michigan we taste every possible weather con-dition known – when it’s time to shoot – they do it!!”

For all of his hard work, Bill will be the recipient of the “Lou Raden Memorial High Volume Target Award.” Bill will receive this honor at the State Shoot Saturday night ceremonies in August.

Congratulations to Bill our high volume shooter for 2012 – shooting 9,950 registered targets!

MSANews July 20138

On Sunday, February 24, 2013 skeet lost a good friend. Roger O. Day of Fenton passed on to the skeet fields in the sky. Roger was born June 18, 1938, making him 74 years old. He was a retired salesman from Taystee Bread Company where he worked for over 30 years.

Roger was a member of the Grand Blanc Huntsman Club and the Fenton Masonic Lodge. Along with his wife Sharon, they raised 5 children, Roger L., Lea, Vickie, Colleen and Cathleen (also he had 5 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Sean, Bryan, Kevin and Roger). As a family, he taught them all to shoot and participated in the Flint Olympian Games and the CANUSA games between Canada and Flint for many years. The family was honored and given a plaque for having partici-pated, as a family, for so many years in the Flint Olympics.

Roger was a kind and loving friend. He always seemed to have a smile on his face and was will-ing to help anyone. He began to shoot a release trigger shotgun the past couple of years and his scores highly improved.

In recent years he was the re-cipient of several belt buckles, as he made several state gun teams.

Listed on the next page are a few of those awards. He will be awarded the Veteran Concurrent Belt Buckle for Veteran (posthumously) at the State shoot this year.

Roger will be missed by all of us but mostly by his friends at Grand Blanc where he shot for so many years. Sharon, Tom Holton and Doug Haines shot many tournaments with him and will now need to find a new squad leader – but they will never be able to replace Roger. Rest in Peace, my friend. We shall meet again.

By Jane CarpenterOn January 11th, we lost a

good friend in Don Barber. Don was only 64 years old and far too young to leave us. Don was married to Linda for more than 41 years. He had many passions in life but his greatest was for his family, Linda, son Steven and his daughter Sarah. He also had four wonderful grandchildren Elsie, Emma, Benjamin and Lucas.

Don was an avid “outdoors-man” and his other passions lay in hunting, fishing, dog training and skeet shooting. Don was a life-time member at North Ma-comb Sportsman’s Club for over 38 years, having joined on Octo-ber 1, 1974. He was active in the early days shooting leagues at the club with folks like Joe Butkov-ich and Dick Foranato. Many knew him as “coach” (nicknamed by Glenn Ulbrich and Dean Rossman), since he spent many years helping anyone that wanted to learn to shoot, or wanted to improve their shooting. Don had more than 739 work hours in at the club.

Don often would run his dogs (English Setters) at the club when it was closed. He loved the outdoors and nature. Although he started out as a rifle shooter, shooting with Paul Nord, he be-came intrigued with skeet. Dean

As a group of us sat around at the club one Sunday after-noon, we each had something to say about Don. Dean Rossman shared, that unknown to most folks, he had asked Don to coach him in skeet. Don had once told Dean the way to set up for skeet, as seen in an article about Dave Starrett, and so they both began to follow Starrett’s lead, and he still does it to this day. Bob O’Brien said, “I never saw Don get angry in all the years I saw him shoot. When I broke my leg last year, Don just showed up and built me a ramp to my front door. That’s just the kind of guy he was.” Dean Merrill added, “Any-time I asked him to do something for me, at the club or anywhere, he was right there.” Mike Koe-nig and Gary Robb added similar comments. All agreed he was a wonderful guy and would be greatly missed. I was lucky to have shot with Don during the years he shot registered sheet, 1998-2002. He was always so kind, and I was there to see him shoot his first 100 registered targets in doubles on May 15, 1999, at North Macomb’s regis-tered shoot, and then go on to win the event (see picture). When I wanted to join North Macomb, Don stepped right up and spon-sored me.

We all agreed that Don will never be forgotten and will live on in our hearts and on our skeet fields here at the club, forever. Rest in peace our friend.

By Rick TrawinskiThe Clark Brown open began

on Friday, April 26th with the doubles event. The doubles was split into two flights one Friday evening and one Saturday morn-ing. The weather was near perfect on Friday and a good percentage of competitors got their targets in being that most competitors shy away from shooting 300 targets in one day. Steve Nelson proved to be the Doubles King with a fine 98. Ray Polister from Elk Rapids was runner up with 97 and John (Big Sexy) Klida was event 3rd with a 96. Class winners were: A – Gordon Novak, B – Jerry Walkowiak, C – Patrick Paul and D – Jason Farhat.

As predicted, the weather for Saturday was picture perfect for a spring day in Michigan. There were a number of fine scores however the elusive 100 was just that – elusive. The 12 Gauge event was decided by a shoot-off of 99’s, with Jerry Walkowiak besting Mike Palmatier. Event 3rd was John Klida repeating his doubles feat. Class winners in the 12 Gauge were: Fred Richard – A, Rick Trawinski – B, Bill Say-lor – C, Aaron Walton (remember that name) – D and Austin Coe – E.

With the weather remaining picture perfect, the competitors took the fields for the 28 gauge

event. Gordon Novak was event champ with a fine 99. Runner up and 3rd had to be decided by a shoot-off between Jim Nierzwick and Bill Saylor with Nierzwick prevailing. Class winners were: AA – Ray Pollister, A – Rick Trawinski, B – Jerry Walkowiak, C– Bob Refice, and D – Garrett Curlett.

Sunday morning came around and is always the case in Michi-gan a light switched was turned on and the weather changed. Cloudy, breezy and threatening skies challenged the 20 Gauge shooters but some fine scores were posted nonetheless. Two perfect 100’s were shot by Jerry Walkowiak and Sub Junior Aaron Walton. We must note here that this was a “first ever 100” for Aaron. Congratulations Aaron! Seasoned vet Jerry won the shoot-off for event champ with Aaron runner up. Event 3rd goes to Jim Nierzwick with a fine 99. The classes are as follows: AA Ray Pollister, A – John Klida, B – Steve Nelson, C – Brian Long and D Patrick Paul.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse the weather did, rain and wind. Just in time for the .410. Two participants held in through terrible conditions and broke fine 98’s, with Gordon Novak prevailing as event champ and Jerry Walkowiak runner up. Event 3rd goes to Ray Pollister

After a very successful new format, starting in 1997, that calls for no individual to appear on more than one team, the Michi-gan Board of Directors voted on continuation of this system to elect Michigan Teams. The 10 All-Staters will be on that team only. Then in order, according to gun averages, the five high-est shooters in each of the four gauges and doubles, followed by the Concurrent H.O.A. win-ners. To qualify for the “All-State Team,” members had to shoot the Michigan “Standards.” They will be listed on the plaque in our Hall of Fame at the De-troit Gun Club, will receive belt buckles and certificates and will receive the right to wear our *Josten made “All-State” ring. The team in order of averages is listed below: (Please note: Due to the economy the “standards” were reduced both Nationally and in Michigan. The National Skeet Association has returned to the original “standards” in 2012. Until further notice the MSA will keep these reduced standards: 12 Gauge: 1,000; 20, 28 & .410: 800; and Doubles: 500 for 2012). Michigan “standards” for 2013 are 800 in each Gauge and 500 in Doubles.

By Jane CarpenterNorth Macomb Sportsmen’s

Club held their 9th annual Dad’s Day Open on Father’s Day week-end. We were once again happy to see Adam Van Eaton join his Dad for their annual Father’s Day Weekend of shooting with us at North Macomb. What a great thing to do with your Dad on his day!

We kicked everything off with the Doubles event on Friday evening and Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. We took to the fields under great conditions but no perfect scores could be had. Denny Tanis (99) took the Cham-pionship, followed by Bruce Christian taking AA1. Class winners were Noah Brennan (A); Ryan O’Leary (B); Bryce Baker (C); and Jack Belding (D). Sub-junior Champion was Hunter Staples and Junior Champion was Noah Brennan.

Saturday’s conditions were warm and sunny and gave us three perfect scores in the 12 gauge. Dean Rossman, Dave Schiebel and Ross Szarenski went to the field and after the smoke cleared it was Dean who took the Championship. Dave took A1 and Ross took A2. Two AA’s headed for the field with their 99’s. Bob O’Brien and Jim Nier-zwick shot off and Bob took AA1 with Jim taking AA2. AA3 went to Bruce Christian. Shoot-offs

Dad’s Day Open – June, 2013

continued and the results were as follows: Schiebel (A); Aaron Walton (B); Noah Brennan (C); and Bill Primeau (D). Sub-junior was Hunter Staples and Junior was Noah Brennan.

The afternoon was perfect and saw one perfect score for the 28 gauge event. On a perfect day, it was Bruce Christian who took the event. Dave Schiebel took AA1 followed by Dean Rossman and Glenn Ulbrich. Pete Pantalena took A1 followed by Dan Adam and Bob O’Brien. The other class winners were: Mike Del-gado (B); Bill Crawford (C); and Jack Belding (D). Our Sub-junior champion was Hunter Staples and Junior honors went to Noah Brennan.

Conditions for the official Dad’s Day were warmer yet and the 20 gauge event brought one

perfect score for the champion-ship shot by Dean Rossman. Two 99’s from Bob O’Brien and Dave Schiebel shot off leaving O’Brien AA1 and Schiebel AA2. AA3 was Bruce Christian. Class winners were: Noah Brennan (A); Rick Trawinski (B); Garrett Curlett (C); Austen Fischer (D). Our Junior champion was Bryce Baker.

The final event, the .410 Bore, brought no perfect scores. Dave Schiebel took the gun after a shoot-off with Bruce Christian and their 95’s. Class winners were: Bruce Christian (AA); Jim Nierzwick (A); Mike Delgado (B); Garrett Curlett (C); and Brett Baker (D). Noach Brennan took Junior champion followed by Garrett Curlett and Jeffrey Hor-batiuk.

Tanis wins Doubles. Rossman takes 12 and 20.

Special thanks go to Bob and our own NMSC Crew who guaranteed the targets were set perfectly; to his corps of volunteers, who kept the houses loaded and fields cleaned; the referees for all of their great pull-ing; and Christa and Dave and Jane, who gladly took everyone’s money and ensured all the scores were posted and shoot-offs ready to go after the last shot was fired. Also, special thanks to Trish

Magyar who helped save us when our computer crashed on Saturday!

Valley Conservation Club has been the home to the Kolar Mid- America for the past ten years, with every year seeming bigger and better than the last, and this year was no exception. Competi-tors from 31 states and provinces, plus England attended this sold-out event.Doubles

The weather was more like March than May – cold, windy AND rainy – for Thursday’s Dou-bles event. And it showed, with a lone 100 posted by Dan Jones for the Championship. Five 99s shot-off for the remaining two spots on the podium, with Charlie Peacock Runner-up and David Scott 3rd. Allen McCannon claimed AAA1; David Starrett AA1; Dennis Lehman A1; Hunter Staples B1 (and Sub-Junior Champ); Jerry Houlton C1; and Charlie Kirk D1. Dianna Riddle was Junior AND Lady Champion.12 Gauge

Though not a whole lot warmer, Friday did dawn with clear blue skies and only a (com-paratively) light wind. Not sur-prisingly, there were 18 perfect scores, including 1st time 100 for Gregg Huffman, with 23 99s close on their heels (that equates to 20% of the shooters missing one or less targets). The shoot-off saw four individuals run the first box, and then after another eight

pair Paul Giambrone claimed the Championship, with Quinten Smith Runner-up (and Junior Champion), and Andy Spooner 3rd. Other perfect score winners were Jeffrey Moecher (AAA), Reg Hooper (AA) and Mike Stewart (A). The remaining class winners were Mary DeFrancesco (B and Lady Champion), Noah Brennan (C), Melinda Angel (D) and James Greenlee (E). Hunter Staples was Sub-Junior Champ.

20 & 28 GaugeThe 20 Gauge Event was shot

over two days, with the weather slightly warmer on Saturday with scattered clouds turning to a light overcast, but there were still lots of shooters sporting long pants. The wind had dropped off con-siderably later in the day Friday, overall making for pretty decent conditions, with 27 perfect scores and 34 99s when everything was

tallied up on Saturday (that’s over 30% only missing none or one targets). Among the perfect scores was Steve Malcolm with his first. Despite the large number of 100s, the shoot-offs went fairly quickly, with only four shooters completing the 1st box. Ten pair later, Charlie Lucas emerged the victor over Moecher Runner-up and Wayne Kidd 3rd. Kurt Grates

(AAA), Gordon Novak (AA and Junior Champ), and Eric Kirk (A) all won their respective class with their 100s. Class B was won by Jim Sykes; Class C, Kurt Miller; and Class D, Jacob Young. Sub-Junior Champion was Staples; and Lady Champ, Susan Huszai.

Given the improved condi-tions over Friday, it should be no surprise that there were 14 100s posted, along with 32 99s, in the 28 Gauge. (Okay, I’ll do the math for you… that’s nearly 25% of the shooters.) Two cleared the first round of the shoot-off, with Mike Glasby, Sr 3rd. Then Giambrone and one of his pro-tégées, Cal Kearny (son of a major league pitcher, so, yes, he does have very good eye-hand coordination) continued on… Eight stations later, the teacher finished ahead of his student. If you haven’t noticed, there seems to be a patter developing here… When L.P. runs a 100, he’s the Champion. Hmmm… At the top of their class were Fred Tschantz (AAA), Glenn Ulrbich (AA), Steve Malcolm, (A), Don Walton (B), Aaron Walton (C & Sub-Junior Champ) and Jessica Taylor (D). Dianna Riddle was Junior Champion and Mary Alice DeFrancesco Lady Champion.

On a side note, Ron Foster, who traveled all the way from England was bemoaning his re-turn trip. You see, his wife Katie

went shopping with Mary Rous-sel… Apparently, her FIVE new pair of shoes were going to put them over on their weight allow-ance!.410 bore & HOA

Sunday was a “.410 only day”, which makes it really nice. That way, everyone can be home Sunday night, and still enjoy the Memorial Day holiday with fam-

ily and friends on Monday. The conditions were the best for the weekend, which is a change given that it’s usually blowing for the .410! Going in to the final event there were two shooters flawless: Kurt Grates and Bill Burke. But, alas, there was no 4-by… Howev-er, L.P. DID run a hundred, along with squad-mate Bryan Rogers,

who were the only two perfect for the day. And, yes, there was a fair number of 99s – ten, to be exact. Giambrone captured the HOA outright with his 100 in the .410 for a 399 – nice shooting L.P.! In the shoot-off they went deep into the 2nd station, with Giambrone the Champion over Rogers. Remember the pattern I mentioned earlier? Giambrone shoots a 100; Giambrone wins event Champion. The 99s went at it a lot longer to decide event 3rd, which went to Jim Reese. Fred Tschantz (AAA), Gordon Novak (AA) and Jack Dean (A) were at the top of their classes with their 99s. Hayden Hillebrand (B), Gerald Novak (C) and Bill Primeau (C won their respective class. Sub-Junior Champion was Walton; Riddle was Junior AND Lady Champ (again), with her 99.

Rounding out the HOA titles were Rogers, Runner-up over Tschantz, 3rd in a shoot-off of 398s. Grates won his shoot-off of 397s for AAA1; our NSSA President, Bob DeFrancesco, won AA; Gordon Novak was A1; Josh Penvose, B1; Kurt Miller, C1 and Jacob Young, D1. Staples was the Sub-Junior Champ; Quinten Smith, Junior Champ, and Mary Alice DeFrancesco, Lady Champ.

was held at the Flushing Michi-gan Club. The weather was glori-ous and the weekend remained the same until late Sunday. Everyone arrived and were raring to get started and go after those targets.

The Doubles event was won by Bruce Christian with a great 98. AA1 went to George Gil-liam; Mike Palmatier took B1; Bob Edwards took B2; and Dale Reeder was B3. Bob Refice took C1; Austin Coe was C2; and Brian Long C3. D1 was won by Jim Schultz and D2 was Christina Baning.

The 12 gauge event brought us a perfect score by George Gil-liam. Jim Nierzwick took AA1; Bruce Christian was AA2; and Mike Palmatier won AA3. Bob Edwards took B1. B2 went to Ed Howe; and B3 was won by John Gilliam, Jr. C1 was won by Bill Saylor; C2 by Jim Moll; and C3 by Mike Baker. D1 went to Gary Schultheis: D2 to Jane Carpenter and D3 was Austin Coe. E1 went to J. Gingrich.

Next came the 20 gauge event which once again found no per-fect scores. George Gilliam took the event with a 99, followed by Bruce Christian’s 98 for AA1 and AA2 went to Jim Nierzwick. A1

Sunday awoke to a beauti-ful day and except for a horrid downpour in the 410 later in the afternoon, the rest of the day was great. The rain came hard and was gone for the shoot-offs. The 28 gauge event brought us a perfect score from Jim Nierz-wick. Bruce Christian too AA1

with his 98 followed by George Gilliam who took AA2 with 96. Ed Howe took A1 and Bill Saylor took A2. Mike Palmatier won B1 followed by John Gil-liam, Jr. with B2; and Bob Refice took B3. Jane Carpenter took C1 and Bill Primeau took C2. D1 went to Mike Baker; D2 to Gary Schultheis; and D3 was Christina Baning.

The 410 was the last gun shot and the first squads got through it dry. The second group of squads got pored upon. We could see the Christian/Nierzwick/Saylor group hiding in the house to get out of the storm. When the shooting was over, it was Bruce Christian taking the championship with a nice 98 and AA1 went to George Gilliam with a 96. Great shoot-ing for the 410 in a storm! Jim Nierzwick was A1; Doug Haines took A2; and Ed Howe won A3. B1 was taken by Mike Palmatier; B2 was Bill Saylor; and B3 went to Bob Refice. Thank you one and all for another fantastic weekend at St. Joe’s. Valley Conservation Club was once again the site for the Poco Loco, this being the 4th year, held June 22nd and 23rd. The Poco Loco is unique in a variety of ways… First, entries are capped at 80 shooters, even though more fields and flights could be added, but the sponsors want to make the Poco a unique experience. Second, we shoot 4, 100 target .410 events (hence the name, which loosely translates to “little crazy”). Third, every shooter receives Poco Loco hats and T-shirts specially embroidered with “Juan”, our “mascot”, and a Poco notebook. And, last and most definitely not least, all shooting is stopped for a mid-day siesta; well, actually, for a fully catered meal, leaving a lot of the shoot-ers ready for a nap afterwards! In addition to the lunches both days, there is also a lavish dinner; local restaurateur Jim Casaburo, owner of Casa Grille and Casa Italiano Ristoranti, and “Chef Al” prepare and serve the lunches and dinners, and Dutch Heritage, an Amish bakery, provides all of the fresh-baked desserts – five differ-ent pies, brownies and a variety of cookies – YUM! NO ONE leaves hungry!

In addition to the “regular” shooting events, there is also a special event, “The Biggest Loser,” on Saturday after the shoot-offs sponsored by Tom Pavlack. The two individuals in each class with the lowest score based on the first two events are provided an opportunity to com-pete for special prizes and ca$h. Of course, in order to make it fair it’s a handicapped shoot-off, but they all shoot the .410! There is a lot of audience participation (read to mean “heckling”) and it seems the AAA and AA shooters get the brunt of it. When all was said and done, B Class shooter Jenny Notstad was the Champion, with Tom Spencer (C Class) Runner-

up and Fred Richard (A), 3rd. The prizes were handcrafted by Tom Pavlack, and have become the envy of all.

In Saturday morning’s event three 100s were posted, includ-ing first-time straight by Linden-wood-bound Remington Whea-ton; and, to top of his first 100 he also won the shoot-off over Sam Armstrong (RU) and Al Magyar (3rd) to claim the Champion-ship. Nice shooting, Reming-ton! Class honors went to Dave Starrett (AAA), Gordon Novak (AA), Mike Stewart (A), Bud Shipp (B), Mike Searle (C) and Duane Parsons (D). Though no

100s were shot in the afternoon event, there were five 99s vying for the Championship. Chuck Isaac outlasted Dave Starrett (RU) and Fred Tschantz (3rd). Class winners were Dave Scott (AAA), Glenn Ulbrich (AA), Henry Duwe (A), Denny Meinert (B), Mike Searle (C) and Duane Parsons (D).

Sunday morning was more humid than Saturday, which made for pretty good conditions. But the best the field could muster were three 99s. Sam Armstrong vanquished Mike Stewart, Runner-up and Chuck Isaac, 3rd to claim the top step on the podium. Class winners were Dave Scott (AAA), Remington Wheaton (AA), Mark Molenaar (A), Stephen Troy (B) and Mike Searle (C). The temperature continued to rise, making for a very hot and humid afternoon event. The final event saw only perfect score – Chuck Isaac for the Championship, and a lone 99 by Sam Armstrong for Runner-up. So, five 98s headed for the shoot-off field to determine who would get the final spot on the podium, which went to Glenn Ulbrich. Dave Scott (AAA), Bryan Rogers (AA), Dan Adam

(A), John McGinnis (B) and Mike Searle (C) were at the top of their respective class.

In the High Over All race, Chuck Isaac’s 100 in the final event put him in a tie with Sam Armstrong with 396s, which is pretty darn good shooting with the “baby bore”. Isaac emerged the victor in the shoot-off, over Armstrong Runner-up. Three 392s shot-off for Event 3rd, with Dave Scott besting Dave Star-rett (AAA) and Al Magyar (AA). The remaining class winners were Dave Pratt, A; Stephen Troy, B; and Mike Searle, completing his “sweep” of C Class (and, no, Mike was not the only C Class shooter!).

For those of you who think the Poco Loco is for AAA and AA shooters, nothing could be further from the truth. Two-thirds of the shooters were in classes A-D, with winnings of nearly Eleven Thousand Dollars! There was also a special Ladies handicap event totaling $500 and, again, the lion share went to B and C Class shooters. And, next year there will be even more incentive for Sub-Junior, Junior, Collegiate and Lady shooters to attend.

Of course, the shoot, with all of its “goodies” and HUGE cash payouts would not be possible without the sponsorship of the three “Juans” – John Haugh,

If you have never been to a shoot at St. Joe’s, you are missing out – it is a top-notch facility, and the hospitality of the members is unmatched. I encour-age you to make plans now to attend one of their shoots next year… perhaps, if you are feeling a “little crazy”, the Poco Loco might find it’s way onto your shoot calendar!

NEW NATIONAL RULING ON ALL-AMERICAN AND CONCURRENT TEAMSProvided by Brent Edwards

NATIONAL ALL AMERICAN TEAM TARGET REQUIREMENTS FOR 2013

Please note a revision by the NSSA this year. To make a NATIONAL All-American Open or Concurrent team, there are NO MINIMUM target requirements. This is based purely on the Krieghoff All American Points race, found on the NSSA website.

To be eligible for the Jay Schatz High Average Leader Awards, the National minimums of 1000 12 gauge targets, 1000 20 gauge targets, 1000 28 gauge targets, 1000 410 targets and 500 Doubles targets are still in effect. These averages are also posted on the NSSA website.

MICHIGAN ALL-STATE, ALL-GAUGE, and CONCURRENT TARGET REQUIREMENTS FOR 2013

The MSA Board approved a reduction in the minimum target requirements to make an All-State and All-Gauge team. The new minimums are 800 targets in the 12 gauge, 800 targets in the 20 gauge, 800 targets in the 28 gauge, 800 targets in the 410 bore and 500 targets in Doubles.

The MSA Board also changed the requirements to make a concurrent team. With the exception of Senior Veteran, Sub-Junior and Rookie, individuals must have shot at least 800 12 gauge targets, 800 20 gauge targets, 800 28 gauge targets, 800 .410 targets, and 500 Doubles targets during the previous target year. For Senior Veteran, Sub-Junior and Rookie of the Year, 500 12 gauge targets, 500 20 gauge targets, 500 28 gauge targets, 500 .410 targets and 300 doubles targets are the minimums required.

These changes begin November 1, 2012. These changes DO NOT affect the 2012 shooting year that ended October 31.

The MSA may change these target requirements in the future.
