Matthieu Charlier, cover letter - January 2017Greetings… my name is Matthieu Charlier and I am a design entrepreneur.

I chose very early to become an industrial designer and to follow my dream of leading a design and engineering studio and work-shop.I received my design education at Rubika, Valenciennes, France from the Institut Supérieur de Design (ISD) and graduated in June 1999 as a Product Design Engineering with a Major in Transportation and Automo-tive. With this title I hold a Masters Degree in Engineering Design (Class 1). The 5 years cursus at ISD (1994-1999) brought me a very hollistic vision of the discipline of design based on 3 axes:Sciences & Humanities:Maths & Applied Physics, Experimental Semiotics, Psychosociology, Industrial Economy, History of Arts & Design, Busi-ness Administration, Oral & Visual Expres-sionTechnologies:Materials & Industrial processes, CAD, Research & Development, Engineering, Ergonomy, Prototyping, Intellectual and Industrial Property, Design ManagementProject Management:Design Analysis, Visual Design, Industrial Design, Prospective Research, Cognitive Design, User Experience, Design Manage-ment, Cross Functional Management, Sus-tainaibility. My life is deeply marked by the 15 years I spent in China between 2000 and 2016.

Indeed, after a short work spell in France for American company Smith & Nephew Kine-tec - the branch of the company that design and manufacture post operative surgery rehabilitation equipment, I chose to search for an international opening. This opportu-nity came at French-owned company Pacif-ic-Concepts (HK) LTD and I moved to Hong Kong in early 2000 and a couple of months later crossed the north border and moved to Shenzhen, PRC in June 2000.

The major part of my work experience in Asia is defined by my achievements in the last position I held at PCH International. Leaving the details relating to my position at PCH for other pages, I can say here that my 10+ years at PCH have made me the entre-preneur/ intrapreneur I am today. At PCH I developed my capabilities and expertise in working within the vertical silo of Design and the transversal field of Busi-ness. The whole time, from the begining within a small company of 40 employees and weighting $70 Millions, to the 3500 employees and $1+ Billion revenue at the time of my departure, I’ve managed the design efforts for PCH.We started from being an accessory maker in the smartphones/ MP3s universe to becoming a leading Product Engineering & Supply Chain Design company for Consum-er Goods (IOT, CE…)Along the way, my team of 1 grew to up to 20 designers (2007- 2008) and stabilised at 10 designers (product designers/ packaging designers/ graphic artist/ graphic supply chain expert/ packaging engineer) in 2015.

Between 2011 and 2015 I have been responsible for developing the Industrial Design and Packaging services at our newly built San Francisco HQ: PCH Lime Lab in the Mission district. On the ID front, my job has been to inte-grate PCH ID expertise with the services of our world class industrial design partners: Ammunition, Astro Design, Minimal… turning their ideas and concepts into full fledged designs. On the Packaging front I became the joint-director of the SFO Business Devel-opment team (I was still based in China) and including one Global Packaging Expert (my co-director), 2 senior Account Manag-ers, 2 front end packaging engineers).I led PCH to join the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and represented PCH at Interna-tional Events. The Packaging Business Unit generated a revenue of about USD80 Millions in 2014.I represented the Design Engineering group within PCH Board for Business Review and held the role of mentor for Industrial Design at Highway 1 (PCH Start Up incubator). In December 2015 I chose to leave PCH throught the company restructuration programme and settled in France for a sabbatical leave with my family.

I currently live with my wife Yadan, my son Ethan (10) and daughter Maya (9) in Reims, Champagne, 45 minutes away from the centre of Paris, France. I am opening the next chapter of my professional life.
