THE community of Maiden Farm in Mthathawere woken last Monday by screams, gun-shots and smoke when community membersclashed with security guards who tried to re-move them from land theywere illegally occu-pying.

The chaos started around 6am after com-munitymembers heard that their newly builthouses on sites near Zingisa ComprehensiveHigh School were going to be demolished bythe municipality who had hired a private se-curity companyFidelityGuards to help them.

In the ensuing violence a Fidelity Guardsemployee was hacked and admitted in a seri-ous condition at Mthatha General Hospital.

A bakkie belonging to Fidelity Guards, was

also burnt out.Construction company Stedone, suffered a

huge loss when their container containingtheir equipment was burnt out. Among theequipment were a TLB and a truck. Expressarrived on the scene whilst the container wasstill on fire.

The workers from Stedone refused to speakto the press regarding the matter as they saidthey were not allowed to talk to the media.

No members of the community were on thesitewhen theExpress arrived. Heavily armedpolicemen inarmouredvehicleswere, howev-er, monitoring the situation.

Amanager of Fidelitywhowas on the scenealso refused to speak to the media, referringthe questions to their Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Vaal Bartman, but attempts to get holdof him were in vain.

It is alleged that the security company washired by the office of the municipal managerto monitor the situation while the illegalstructures were demolished.

When the security company arrived, com-munity members were already waiting forthem and a fight broke out. The SA Policewere called in, togetherwith law enforcementofficers from the King Sabatha DalindyeboMunicipality.

The head of crime prevention in KSD, Nko-siphendule Gqokoma, said they were notaware that any illegal structures were goingto be demolished in Maiden Farm. He said hehad heard that the instruction was given bythe office of the municipal manager. He saidhe would make inquiries about the matter.

Attempts by Express to get comment fromthe office of the municipal manager were

fruitless as there was no one answering thephone.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mzukisi Faty-ela confirmed the incident and that machinesbelonging to the construction company weredamaged. He strongly condemned the damageof property by people who are dissatisfiedwith something.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure thatthose who are involved get arrested,” saidFatyela.

There had been numerous battles betweenthe municipality and community memberswho had illegally erected houses on munici-pal land.

Towards the end of last year themunicipali-ty demolished houses in the area but commu-nity members returned and rebuilt theirhouses.

THEMEC for Rural Development andAgrari-an Reform, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, said in re-sponse to the Eastern Cape leader of the Dem-ocratic Alliance, Athol Trollip’s allegationsabout the bad conditions and non-payment ofstaff at theMagwaandMajola tea estates, thatthe last payment his departmentmade to bothestates was R3,1 million last month.

Express reported lastweek onTrollip’s visitto the farms and questions over where themillions of rands had gone that the govern-ment has pumped into theMagwa andMajolaTea estates where, allegedly no harvesting istaking place and workers are not being paid.Qoboshiyane said he notes and welcomes

the decision by Trollip and his friends to visitthe Magwa and Majola tea estates.“The lurid statement issued by Trollip

about the situation at both tea estates partlyshows the extent of challenges that inspiredus to embark on the business rescue processof both estates. It also exposes incorrect andfalse information Trollip paddles as truthabout the situation in the estates andpaymentof employees,” said the statement issued byQoboshiyane.“What might be a rude awakening moment

to him and his bank of friends, is nothing newto us; hence we have been engaging the work-ers through their unions in both estates andthe owners of the Majola tea estate, the work-ers’ trust, on rescuing these estates in orderto protect their jobs.”The statement further reads that now that

Trollip had been to the estates, they trust thathis viewabout their supportwill evolve to em-brace the business rescue process aimed ataddressing the situation and the low tea pro-duction in the estates.MECQoboshiyane called on anyMember of

Provincial Legislature (MPL) and Member ofParliament (MP) to read their business rescueplan so that they could use their positions inboth provincial legislature and the nationalassembly to support their efforts to save jobs, and protect the livelihood of many familieswhose lives are affected by the current situa-tion at the tea estates.“The current situation in these estates de-

mands more than a one-day tour of the es-tates; it needs a long lasting solution to ensuresustainable livelihoods for the workers, reju-venation of the rural economy, protection ofjobs and creation ofmore opportunities for lo-cal businesses, youth and community atlarge.”According to the statement, workers of both

estates are fully behind the business rescueprocess and understand the dynamics facedby both estates more than the visiting Trollipand his friends “who appear to have beenflashing their pricey cameras and taking vid-eo footage more than listening to the issuesat hand”.According to Qoboshiyane, the focus of the

business rescue process was to make sure

that Magwa and Majola tea estates produceand package their tea properly for the mar-kets in the same packaging of the tea boxTrollip requested from theMECQoboshiya-ne after the committee meeting.“It is incorrect to say the workers were

last paid before the elections. Subsequent toour engagements and agreementwithwork-ers, provincial government’s economictransformation cluster, discussions be-tween the Premier, relevant MECs, EasternCapeDevelopment Corporation (ECDC) andthe Eastern Cape Rural Development andAgrarian Reform (ECRDAR), we held ameeting with Nehawu, which representsworkers in both estates.”“The last payment we made was in Janu-

ary 2015.“Contrary to Trollip’s false claims, this

January, we paid about R3,1 million to bothestates with about R1 933 763.72 for Magwasalaries, R901 340.00 for Majola salaries andabout R264 896.28 was paid to the South Afri-can Revenue Services to settle tax debt ofMagwa tea estate which had forced SARS tofreeze their bank account. The debt owed toSARS meant that any money made from teasales serviced the existing SARSdebt, whichwehavenowsettled,” clarifies the statementfrom Qoboshiyane. He further states that now that the debt

has been settled, Magwa tea estate, which isoperating at a minimum capacity level, willbe able to cover operational costs from theprofits of tea sales. Magwa and Majola teaestates workers have, amongst other things, agreed that their remuneration will be vari-able costs linked to production and salesrather than fixed costswithnodeterminableoutput requirements. The business rescue process of both es-

tates had received overwhelming supportfrom all stakeholders in the province witheach prepared to play their part in rescuingthese businesses.“Our focus as government is to fix admin-

istrative and management aspects of the es-tates in order for production to go back tofull capacity, for tea production tounfoldun-hindered for the benefit of theworkers, localeconomy and the Workers’ Trust that ownsMajola estate.“The solutions and systems we will put in

place will not be ephemeral like the DA’s in-terest on the states and their one-day visitbut will be long lasting to ensure that thereis sustainable livelihood in the estates, com-munities and in the rural economy.”MEC Qoboshiyane said he had been en-

gaging a number of local communities, theworkers and ANC leaders who are closer tothe estates and who made a number of pro-posals which are included in the businessrescue plan.MEC Qoboshiyane called on the DA not to

make the plight of the workers and the teaestates a political football but to rather jointhe work done to protect and save jobs in or-der to develop communities.

. Responding to MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane’sstatement, Trollip said the MEC needed to becareful when sending public officials to writehis political statements. “This statement writ-ten byMvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, who is Qobo-shiyane’s spokesperson, is not only unprofes-sional but it is also insulting. The said officialhas chosen to refer to me as “Trollip” and tomy parliamentary and legislature colleaguesas a “bank” and “army” of friends. Sicwetshaclearly has no idea of what he is talking about.I have been there and visited those people foryears now and they have told me of the plight.I have taken video footage which clearly illus-trates the dire problems faced.”In a letter to the MEC Trollip said, “I chal-

lenge both of you (Sicwetsha andQoboshiyane)to disprove what I said in the statement or toretract these accusations. I at least have beento Magwa on numerous occasions and went toboth estates myself and interacted with work-ers andmanagement staff in order to assess thestate of affairs for myself. I have been on thisportfolio since 1999 andhave apassion formak-ing Agriculture work.

“Your staff member’s comments are an in-sult to me and my efforts in this regard overa period of fifteen years!!“This kind of knee-jerk denial and trading

of insults can never be in the interest of theestates and the community that live andworkthereon,” Trollip addedTrollip said he would compare his findings

with those of the portfolio committee whenthey visit Magwa later in the year to deter-mine who is peddling untruths.“The facts are thatneithermanagementnor

workers are aware that they’ve been paid. AtMagwa someworkersmistook us as potentialinvestors and pleaded, “sitathe siyafa apha”(take us, we are dying here). TheMEC clearlyhas no idea about tea production, perhaps it’she that should “listen to the issues at hand”and familiarise himself with the real state ofaffairs there. Let it be known that the MEC’soffer of a “cupof tea that runnethover” is typi-cal of empty ANC promises that the people ofthis province have been hearing for the pasttwenty years,” he ended.

Student Representative Council (SRC)Mthatha Campus secretary Melikhaya Mcitwasaid they still found that many categoriesagreed on in a meeting held last week with the

management, were not being implemented– particularly the issue of NSFAS beneficia-ries who had debts from previous years.“To our surprise we always experience

amendments of resolutions by the registra-tion staff members particularly finance de-partment and the office of the Executive Di-rector, Student Affairs, and we are unhappywith this conduct,” said Mcitwa. He said over the registration period, some

students could not find their names on thelist of students registered through NSFASeven though they had registered usingNSFAS.“The agreement with the management

about the historical debts when registeringmust not favour international students; allstudents must be covered under one agree-ment,” he added.

Students are also not enticed by the Mini-mumInitial Payment (MIP) expected fromthenewly enrolled students who applied forNSFAS.“Admitted applicants for enrolment must

be accommodated by NSFAS funding includ-ing theMIP required to register and space forthese prospective students must therefore bereserved in programmes they have been ad-mitted in whilst NSFAS is considering theirapplications.”Mcitwa highlighted that the area around

WSUwas populated by studentswhowere notable to afford university fees.He added that students had resolved that

until their demands had been met, all regis-tration processes and the functioning of theUniversity would be suspended, and that theSRC of Mthatha Campus is still willing to

have further negotiations with the manage-ment of the university.Buffalo City campus in East Londonwas al-

MBIZANA youth organisation called “I CanStudent Support” held a fund raising eventwith a difference showcasing clothes madeout of newspapers and pamphlets in the Mbi-

zana community hall recently.

The theme for the fund raising event was“Clean-up Day and Environmental FashionShow”. The models were showcasing differ-ent garments made out of paper (newspapers

and advertising pamphlets) and plastic.Although it was a fund raising event, it was

also meant to raise awareness in the commu-nity about recycling and the importance ofkeeping their community clean throughcleaning the town and using recyclable mate-

rial such as paper, plastic and tin to makeclothing and other articles and art.The event also provided the community, es-

pecially young people, with hands-on experi-ence that helped them see that an effort to cutthewaste of resources doesmake a difference.

Ja, as you know ukuthi we always keep ourpromises.

In ourprevious columnwepromised to takea visit in the mnandi places around EasternCape, particularly in the former Transkei.Ja, we did that and our visit was a success.

Inmostmnandis, if not taverns, there are stillthose reliable old patrons and some ‘newones’.As usual, after a few drinks, some become

loose balahle whilst others are still maintain-ing their discipline even after drinking. The only tavern or mnandi place where we

foundold faces only andno ‘new-ones’was theSteakhouse in UTA.Umwino nokuncwasa kusekhona and there

are still ladies who go there not just for drink-ing, but also to catch their victims.Men who drink and lose their minds. That’swhat happened inBrickyard inUTA,

whereby a group of women bexhwithe enyei-outie yashiyeka ingenakwantsiba zakub-habha.Mara mfethu unesibindi, khona kuthiwa

uyakwazi ukwenza ungavele uthwale elinga-kaya lona ihlahla.Shame, nalo mntu wakho akakuxabisanga

yaye udlala ngawe xa evele eze negquba lama-Juda le-friends zakhe.I wonder if the guy managed to have time

with his girlfriend. Nazo ke ezasetywaleni. So that is how our jouney was. Actually

nothing had changed that much kuba kalokuyindawo yempuzo.

Oh!! There is a change

You know what, recently we met uBukiweZide, the newsreader kuMhlobo Wenene; wedon’t know whether she hails from Ngqelenior Libode mara between the two.We had doubts ukuba that it was her.She has changed akasafani nala bundu girl

wayeyiyo, now ushaya ngamagedelocks(dreadlocks). But shamewhatwe liked about her, shewas

still humble like any bundu girl because shecalled uGeshe ebengamboni and greeted him.Hoping that ke Mabukie you won’t changeand you will never be corrupted by liBhayialambathwa. And make no mistake don’t forget where

you come from.Hoping that she had already expressed her

gratitude to Mnyamana (uWonga Ndzamela)who had tried in all media institutions tomake sure that you are being considered ashe saw potential in you.He even knocked at the offices of umgosi

team.I wonder nanizokulunga na lapha kuba zi-

yaphenduka phela.Kaloku kufuneke sibakhumbuze aba bant-

wana baphinde balibale apho basuka khona. She is driving usisi even though we did not

see the make of the car she was driving.Asazi ke nokuba ngumkhwenyani lo ebe-

hamba naye. Kuyatshatwa ke eMampondwe-ni ntombi.

Uphalele shame

Uyazi akuve kubuhlungu ukubona umntuobe-decentmara ubone ngoku ukuba sephale-le nje ngamanzi, ngala makholwa. There is an outie yase-Frere kwa-Makaula

who used to be a very decent and respectedguy whowas not visiting shebeens often eventhough he was drinking.Enye into no-partnerwakhe kwakubonaka-

la ukuba baphethene kakuhle and uy-amnqwanqwada kwezinye izinto.Unfortunately we heard that the partner

passed on towards the end of last year.Zambi ke ezo ndaba.A few months down the line her hubby is

getting drunk in such a way that he even failsto go home.Niyibone phi ke loo nto makwedini?Last weekend we were really astonished to

see him at Carlton Pub enxile ethufela esifub-eni de wabanjwa zii-chomie zakhe xa seku-hanjwa kuba bekungahambeki.Shame, uyaphalala and it seems as if use-

lela kwi-stress.Yonke ke la nto yenziwa kukuxhomekeka

komnye umntu ekuziphatheni athi waku-hamba emhlabeni umqolo ubephandle.Nangoku akhona amadoda obona ukuba

anqotywababafazi konaukubabekuthiwaab-ekho ngekunzima kuwo, kuba bangabantwa-na ngoku badala.Madoda fundani ukuziphatha without

i-guidance yoomama basemakhaya.Ilusizi la nto siyibone kula mjita.Khazi endlini kunjani kuba kaloku kwaba

bhuti xa kukhona umama wasekhaya kunzi-ma nokwendlula oku, because kaloku walit-hwala ityala umntwana womntu ngokuthat-ha le ndoda.Ewe kona boomama bethumara nathimay-

ibekhona into yokuzithathela izigqibo ngok-uziphatha kwethu.Nivile moss asithethi silungu kule nto ba-

fethu.

60 000 COPIES WEEKLY

GREG NOTA

AS part of their social responsibili-ty, the Public Servants Association(PSA) of South Africa donated 250jerseys to Magwa Senior PrimarySchool (SPS) pupils last weekWednesday.

It was not the first time for PSAto assist the school of Magwa as lastyear in November they were at theschool to assist the learners andpar-ents to plant their own garden to beable to feed the learners as most ofthem are coming from disadvan-taged family. The parents of the children,

among them former workers at theailing MagwaTea Corporation, arereportedly battling to survive andare dependent on grocery handoutsfrom local businesses after their sal-aries went unpaid for about sevenmonths. The PSA’s provincial shop stew-

ard David King said they had cho-sen to assist pupils from MagwaSenior Primary school after theyhad visited the school and heard thestory about parents who had notbeenpaid for sevenmonths from theMagwa Tea Farm which was notfunctional due to its financial woes. The principal of the school Nom-

ampondomise Chonco thanked PSAforchoosing todonate to their schoolduring these hard times when theparents of the learners were unableto provide for their children due tothem not being paid for severalmonths and others being laid offwork since the factory where theyused to work was not functional.PSAManager Gilbert Siyakamela

thanked the warmth welcome theyreceived from the school. He saidthey decided to donate jerseys be-cause a cold child was an inactivechild so theywant the children to beactive and concentrate on theirstudies.

VOLKSWAGEN is launching a small car in the A00 seg-ment.

The award winning up! will be introduced belowVolkswagen Polo Vivo and Polo, which have been the toptwo best-selling passenger models in South Africa since2010.

At 3,540 mm in length, 1,641 mm in width and 1,489 mmin height, the up! is one of the smallest four-seater carson the market. Its overall length consists of short bodyoverhangs and a long wheelbase of 2,420 mm. Thanks tothese dimensions the turning circle of the up! is an unu-sually compact 9.8 metres.

Use of space inside the car is exceptionally good, withspace for four adults. This is due to the wheelbase, whichis one of the longest in the segment, combined with anengine that is mounted well forward. The 251-litre bootis also significantly larger than is typical in this class. When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space increasesto 951 litres.

The up! has a large bootlid, which extends right downto the bumper. This so-called hybrid bootlid consists ofthree basic layers. Its outer skin consists of a transparentglass element. The bootlid is opened by pressing a buttonin the handle beneath the Volkswagen logo.

Powering the up! is a new generation of three-cylinderpetrol engine with outputs of 55 kW. Standstill to 100 km/

h takes 13.2 seconds and top speed is 171 km/h. This en-gine returns a combined fuel consumption of 4.7 litresper 100km while emitting 108 g/km of carbon dioxide.

The aluminium five-speed gearbox in the up! was spe-cially tuned for the its three-cylinder petrol engine. Thegearbox weighs just 25 kg including transmission fluid, which makes it one of the world’s lightest gearbox in thistorque class (the gearbox also comes with indicators forthe recommended gear and the engaged gear in the in-strument cluster).

Two derivatives are available: Take up! and Move up!.Both are competitively priced and offer a high level ofstandard equipment. A raft of safety features includingABS and four airbags are available as standard features.Factory fitted optional features include:

. Driver package: rear parking sensors, cruise control, multifunctiondisplay

. Comfort package: electric frontwindows, height adjustable driver’sseat

.Winter package: front fog lights, heated front seats

. Sound Plus package: Four speakers in front and two in rear

. 15-inch Waffle alloy wheelsVolkswagen up! is available in six colours, namely

A DOUBLE header between the teams contesting theSAB Regional League, which included a Butterworthderby, was held at Msobomvu Stadium in Butter-worth.

It was a weekend filled with football entertainmentdespite the poor attendance at the grounds.

The derby was between Butterworth All Stars andButterworth United and the second game was betweenGreen Lovers FC and Hotspurs FC.

Although both the games were played in very hotweather conditions and in front of few spectators, theplayers did not seem affected and displayed excellentfootball skills.

The first game was between Green Lovers FC andHotspurs FC. Both teams played with determinationto win the game but unfortunately they had to sharea point after drawing one all.

The second game was the derby between the teamsfrom Butterworth who wanted to show each other whois the best between them. Both teams proved to bestrong as the game ended in a goalless draw.

Poor attendance for spectators at Msobomvu stadi-um was still a huge challenge because football fans didnot turn up in numbers as expected for the big derbygame.

Last month Butterworth United boss MzwamadodaSinyanya raised his concern regarding the poor at-tendance at the grounds.

Sinyanya urged soccer fans to come out in numbersand support local football in order to boost the confi-dence of players and show support to the up-and-com-ing stars. He voiced his concern after his side claimeda 5-2 victory over their neighbours Green Lovers.

Green Lovers FC coach Golden Nguqu also voicedhis concern about the poor attendance at the sportground and also urged supporters to come in numbersand support local football.
