    Dear Muldoon Parents and Guardians,

A missed school day is a lost

    opportunity for students to learn.

District data shows there is a direct

    correlation between our students who

    attend school regularly and higher

    academic achievement levels. In order

to reach attendance goals, students can

miss no more than 17 days of school

per year, that's the equivalent of two

days per month. Instilling the value of

coming to school every day is

important to start at a young age.

It is also important for students to be

on time for their instruction. Students

are brought into the classroom at 8:45

am to eat breakfast. Instruction begins

right on time at 9:00 am. If your child

expects to have time for breakfast,

please be on time. Tardiness impacts

    the whole class. The classroom

    instruction is interrupted when

students walk in late. Let's work

together to put procedures in place to

get our students started on time.

Important, so please keep us updated with any phone or

address changes. You can also log

into your Q or Parent Connect account

    and update information there.

School Day Start & End Times: The first bell rings at 8:45, and

    class starts promptly at 9:00.

Our school day ends at 3:30.

With help from the Alaska Food

    Coalition and Children's Lunchbox,

Muldoon Elementary is now able to

offer emergency food to families in

need. In addition to the weekend

food bags which are sent home

every Friday with students, we now

have a stocked food pantry for

    families in extreme need. Parents

    can contact the school for

    assistance.

    Helpful Reminders

After School Pick-Ups: As you can imagine, the office is quite a busy

place in the afternoon. Please call in

    all pick-up notices before 3:00 p.m.

    Also, to ensure minimal lost

instruction time, we will be unable to

release any students after 3:00 p.m.,

unless there is a medical emergency. If

    at all possible, please schedule

    doctor’s appointments, etc. after 3:30.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

Focus on Attendance: Attendance at school is very important. When

students arrive late or are picked up

    before dismissal, teaching and learning

are disrupted. We have staff in the

morning starting at 8am that can

supervise your child in the computer

    lab Monday-Friday. Please make

every effort to have your child in

    school from 8:45am-3:30pm each day.

    Morning recess runs from 8:30-

8:45am. Once students enter into the

    building after morning recess,

breakfast is served in the classrooms

    from 8:50-9:05am.

  • Lost & Found: We already have a large amount of lost & found items. If

your student has lost an item, please

remind them check our lost and found

    collection, located near the front

office. Our advice to you is to label,

    label, label your child’s backpack,

lunch box, snow gear, etc. You would

be amazed how many people buy

black gloves and snow pants each

year. We have 460 students attending

Muldoon this year. That’s a lot of

gloves, hats, snow pants, boots, etc.

So please be proactive and label you

child’s items with a silver or black

    Sharpie marker.

Dress for the Weather: Now that winter weather is here we would like

to remind parents that classes will still

be going outside for recess. The ASD

policy is to go outside for recess unless

the temperature is below -10 degrees.

Please make sure your child is dressed

    appropriately for the weather every

    single morning before leaving your

    home.

Walking to School: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety

    Administration, children ages 16 and

under are the most at-risk for getting

hit while crossing the street. In order

to protect students from dangerous and

    life-threatening accidents, it’s essential

    that drivers yield to pedestrians

    crossing the street at intersections,

even when a crossing guard is not

present. If your child walks to and

from school, please talk to them about

walking on the sidewalk, staying out

of the road and/or parking lot, and

walking with other students to stay

safe. Just a gentle reminder that we

live in Alaska and we have moose and

bears in the area as well. All of these

things need to be reviewed with your

child on a regular basis, so they can

    stay safe.

    Pick-Up and Drop-Off Traffic

    Reminders: Our curbside parking area

is to be considered a single file car

“Pause Parking Lane” for parents. We

    appreciate families who are

remembering to stay in their cars while

in the pause parking lane and

continuing to move forward as space

    becomes available, which helps to

keep traffic moving. Look for the

    traffic attendants and follow their

directions. The staff are trying to keep

everyone safe and keep traffic moving.

Thank you to families who are helping

    keep our busy end-of-day dismissal

safe for students. You all make

Muldoon a safe place to be!

Messages to Parents: Please make sure that your child knows what they

will be expected to do when the school

day is over, before they leave home in

the morning. Our office staff is not

    available to hand deliver messages

throughout the school day. With a

school of our size, when the bell rings

at the end of the school day it becomes

    quite difficult to reach individual

children that we have taken messages

for. It is also very disruptive to the

    teachers and students when intercom

calls are made to the class at the end of

    the day.

    A Word from our PTA

We will have our next meeting during

the Movie Night on March 22nd, in the

library. Please join us while your

child(ren) enjoy the film! We are

working to create school spirit shirts

and start a school store, so we really

need more input from the families!

    These projects have been funded

thanks to the awesome work of the

students collecting change for the coin

    drive, your purchases in the

    Tupperware fundraiser, and donations

    from the community.

The clothing closet has also been very

    successful thanks to community

donations and the support of Value

Village! We hope to have this free

clothing available at most events for

    families.

On March 21st, we will be hosting the

    PTA Connected with Google “Be

    Internet Awesome” Family Workshop

    Grant! There will be programming,

    materials, and information related to

    internet safety and technology.

    Additionally, we will provide prizes,

food, and drinks. Details will be

included in the RSVP form that your

student will be bringing home soon!

Please mark your calendars and plan

    for fun!

If you would like more information or

have any questions you can email

    [email protected] or

    contact the president Shaw McDonald

    at Muldoon most days.

Please check out our new Muldoon

    Greetings From the Nurse

A warm reminder from the Muldoon

    Nurse.

    Cold temperatures continue, and to

keep our students warm and healthy,

it’s important for them to dress warm.

Please remember to send student to

school with a hat, gloves or mittens,

snow boots and pants and a warm

    jacket/coat.

Having these items at school will help

    prevent students from getting sick

    when going outdoors.

Getting at least 8-10 hours of sleep a

    night. Keeping healthy bedtime

schedules is important for our students

to be alert and ready to learn at school.

    Thank you,

  • 2019 PEAKS State Assessment

    Reach new PEAKS of learning!

Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show

what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success.

The Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (PEAKS) is Alaska’s summative assessment administered to

students in Grades 3-9 (English language arts and mathematics) and grades 4, 8 and 10 (science) each spring.

The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a

student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at his/her grade level. The assessment is taken on the

computer and is not timed, but each content area takes approximately 100-180 minutes.

Parents can locate resources for the PEAKS assessment, including directions for PEAKS Practice tests, called

Online Tools Training and PEAKS Tutorials on the ASD website at www.asdk12.org/PEAKS.

Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school

on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.

The ASD PEAKS testing window below allows for school assessment scheduling flexibility.

Students! Get ready to reach new peaks of learning and earn a PEAKS sticker set for showing what you know

during our school’s PEAKS testing dates
