Hands-on Active Learning (HAL) students were compared to control group who received a standard lecture (LECT). Both groups showed identical growth in technical understanding as assessed by Concept Inventories which indicates that student learning is not hindered when students learn from each other. However, students surveys for those who received HAL experiences revealed significant improvements in frequency and quality of interactions with the instructor and collaboration with peers, in creating their own understanding, and in their minds what they perceive to be a better understanding of the material.

Assess CHAPL at WSU

INTRODUCTION: We are refining Desktop Learning Modules (DLMs) within a Cooperative, Hands-on, Active, Project based, Learning (CHAPL) setting for Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Bio- and Electrical Engineering courses at a diverse set of institutions.

Project Outcomes:• Workbook for easy adoption of DLMs & CHAPL• New concept questions aligned with DLMs• Qualitative / quantitative critical reasoning

instrument• Industrial partnering for robust equipment• Dissemination at:1.Washington State University – Multiple Departments
