2 2012 Tipp City Mum Festival

This year’s President: Mary Hemer-ThomasMary Hemer-Thomas is the 2012 Mum Festival president.

She lives in Troy with her husband Kenny. She has threechildren, Jordan, Holly and Zach, and a grandson Cooper.Mary has been employed at Alvetro Orthodontics for almost20 years.She said, “I am honored to be this years president. I love

volunteering for non-profit organizations but the MumFestival is very special to me. My grandparents, Chet andLorna Loughman, lived just up the road from the park onWestedge. My grandma looked forward to the festival everyyear. Some of my best memories are spending the day at thefestival with her. Her love of mums wore off on me at ayoung age. It's been a lot of fun being involved with theMum Festival; we have such a great committee. My little sister, Ashley, is the 2013president. I know our grandma would be excited and our grandpa would be proud.”

The Mum Festival Grand Marshal thisyear is not just one person, or just two peo-ple. It is an entire family that spans six gen-erations in Tipp City - the Kyle family.“We are a representative of the family,”

June (Wampler) Kyle said.She and her husband Jim will be joined

on a carriage by Steve and Susie (Kyle)Carlton; Barbara Zimmerman and her sonDoug; Rick and Kate (Kyle) Johnsen withtheir children Becca and Dylan, and Tonyand Julie McGillvary (Julie is the daughterof Karolyn Vandeweer).The last time Jim and June rode in a car-

riage was for Rick and Katie’s wedding(although they did enjoy being in a wagonwith the Fultons one year). They sent Jim’sparents, Rick’s grandmother, June’s moth-er, and Jim’s dad’s sisters Betty and Mary(Ms. Mary of Tipp City schools) on a car-riage down to the nursery, and Great-AuntBetty (Jim’s dad’s sister) said she hadn’t

ridden in a carriage since the flood of 1913when “Daddy pulled out the machine.”This year, the “machine” will be a per-

fect opportunity for the Kyles to do one ofthe things they love best - walking (or inthis case riding) down the parade route tosee everyone and visit the traditonal housegatherings along the route.“It’s kind of a Tipp City homecoming,”

Kate said.Jim’s late brother Tom Kyle Jr., who

passed away in 1992, was one of the found-ing members of the Mum Festival.The festival concept started, however,

with Otto Frings (of Frings and BayliffFuneral Home). He had been to a TulipFestival in Holland, Mich., and thoughtTipp could have a similar hometown festi-val. At that point, the Kyle family owned

Springhill Nursery (formerly Bohlanderand Sons) and a 5-acre field of mums.“It was beautiful in the fall,” Kate said,

recalling how colorful the flower field was.

The 2012 Tipp Mum Festival Motorcycle Ride will start atWarrior Racing on Weller Dr. in Tipp City on Sunday,September 30 (rain date Saturday, Oct. 6).Registration is from 9-11 a.m. The cost is donation only,

with proceeds going to the Tipp City Needy Basket.The riders will be leaving Warrior Racing on Weller Dr. at

about 11:30 AM. The ride will be approximately 90 miles.The first stop is at Cruizer in Russia for lunch.The next stop will be at Tailgaters in Greenville. Then on

to Buffalo Wild Wings for a quick pit stop for a drink and thefinal leg of the ride will be to back to Warrior Racing in TippCity.Door prizes and a 50-50 will be drawn for at each stop.Once back at Warrior Racing, the band “Life Behind Bars”

Tipp Monroe Community Services (TMCS) will be spon-soring the 34th Annual 5K Run for the Mums at 8 a.m.Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Tipp City Park.We will continue to take registrations through Wednesday,

Sept. 19, and a T-shirt will be included in the $15 fee. Or run-ners can come out the morning of the race to the Tipp CityPark Roundhouse between 6:30-7:45 a.m. and register (t-shirtnot included).

So Frings, with the help of Tom Jr., Phil Wampler andJohn Benham of the hardware store, put together thefirst-ever Tipp City Mum Festival in October 1958.Tom Jr. and Wampler climbed up to the top of the

water tower to place a banner advertising the festival -and then started to dispute about where to hang it.“They got into an argument on the water tower,” June

said, “John was on the ground telling them to get downand decide what they wanted to do down here!”Eventually, a compromise was reached and the banner

could be seen for a mile. Other advertising came fromTom Jr. and his aero-coupe biplane.He got a PA system, put the stereo in the seat next to

him, and flew around verbally promoting the MumFestival a couple nights before.Tom Jr. was also the first chairman of the parade. The

first year, every float in the parade was all mums.“They would just go out in the field and pick them,”

Jim said.The mum-covered floats continued until the festival

had to be moved to September because of the weather.Mums naturally bloom in mid-October (the genetic pro-

gramming and special shading is what forces certainbreeds to bloom early).“I loved the floats made out of mums and flowers,”

Tom Jr.’s daughter Susie said, “They were gorgeous.”Jim remembers the hard work that went into making

one of those floats.“The night or two before, you’d be up all night,” he

says with a smile.The parade also used to have even more bands in it,

because there was a band show afterwards. Twenty ormore bands would march in the parade, then go out tothe football field for an invitational.“The bands were a big deal,” Kate said.Now, the park is filled with vendors, booth and other

entertainment. The band show has become a separateprogram entirely, held this year on Sept. 15.Another entity that has grown and moved is the

Queen’s Pageant. June was one of the orginal committeemembers for the pageant. She said it used to be just aday or two before the festival itself and a smaller produc-tion.“It’s just evolved,” June said.

Although the Mum Festival has “blossomed” andchanged across the board, it still remains a place for TippCity to celebrate each other and their community - andget those Tipp City Firemen’s Waffles to boot.

for a ride in a Tin Lizzy. June took her then three chil-dren, Jennifer Peters, Thom Grim and Dave Grim, tothe park to see the festivities. Thom was a toddler andbegged his mom to purchase a chance.Well, when his mom finally agreed, it became appar-

ent that Thom thought a chance meant they actually gotthe vehicle.When he became upset, Tom Kyle Jr. came over.

After finding out the situation, he asked “Would itmake him happy if I took a him for a ride in the vehi-cle?”And then he took all three kids for a ride in that Tin
