Murphy

    While working for Architect, Brud Weger, he gave me assignments so I could show him what I know.  When he found an area I was lacking in, he would then give more assignments and lend me books to read or send me to construction sites.  

        One of those assignments was to design a house for an imaginary family on the site where the office is located.  We named the family the Murphys.  I then set a program for the house and began designing.  Brud began acting as the client and I would present the design to him.  He would ask for changes and I would redesign for those changes.  The project has been ongoing from the time I started working for him.The image to the right is a revit export I edited in Mircosoft Image Suite; I wanted to learn how this program was different from Photoshop.

The client we came up with is a couple in their 70s.  Patrick Murphy was hit with a stray bullet from a police officer's gun when they were living in New York City.  That experience, and his life of driving taxis and operating his taxi company shaped him into an angry distrusting man.  After he became 

paralyzed from the waist down, his lawyer daughter helped him get a large settlement from the NYPD.Olympia put her painting aside to dedicate her full 

attention to caring for her husband.After spending a weekend in York, Maine, the 

couple decided they were ready to move out of the city.  They purchased an empty lot and set out to 

built their dream home – one where Patrick could be mobile and Olympia could find inspiration for her 

paintings.

Thinking as if I were the clients, I collected images from books and magazines.  The images all were noted to describe what I feel the

clients would say.

After analyzing the site, and creating a building space program, I hand drew some floor plans with little detail. The clients (Brud) and I reviewed these plans and spent time revising the plans until we arrived at something everyone was excited about.  

I determined that the best home for Patrick and Olympia would be on a leveled piece of land at the top of the hill.  The house would actually be four separate buildings.  One house for day time living spaces.  One housing the sleeping spaces and a guest/caretakers apartment.  There will also be a garage with Patrick's wheelchair accessible work shop.  The forth and smaller, yet very important to Olympia, would be a studio.  All the buildings surround a courtyard, except for the studio which is suspended over the hill and hidden in the trees.  The buildings would all be at the same elevation, so Patrick can easily move around.

Once I knew where the bathroom and closet would be located, I had to refine the spaces to work successfully.

I took some time to study kitchen design guidelines, (and paid very close attention to ADA guidelines) to design the most functional kitchen for the client's needs.

Recently the Murphys decided they want the house to be less traditional.  Here is a hand drawing I presented to the client.  After the client (Brud Weger) saw this, I learned they want an even more Modern design.  I hand sketched some different concepts to see what the clients will like.

One of the first things arriving guests see is the garage, so it should be no surprise I put as much time into its design as I did
