W e , t h e r e f o r e , d e c i d e d t o u s e 2 4 h o u ru r i n e s p e c i m e n s a s a p o o l f o r t o t a l b o d y DMT.I n a n e a r l i e r s t u d y o f 1 2 2 a c u t e p s y c h i a t r i cp a t i e n t s ( R o d n i g h t e t a l . 1 9 7 6 ) we d e t e c t e d DMTi n t h e u r i n e o f 47% o f t h o s e d i a g n o s e d b y t h e i rp s y c h i a t r i s t s a s s c h i z o p h r e n i c , 38% o f t h o s e w i t h' o t h e r p s y c h o s e s ' , 19% o f n e u r o t i c s , 1 3 % o ft h o s e w i t h a f f e c t i v e p s y c h o s i s a n d 5 % o f n o r m a l s .T h e u s e o f a v a r i e t y o f o p e r a t i o n a l d e f i n i t i o n s o fp s y c h o s i s f a i l e d t o r e v e a l a n y g r o u p more c l o s e l yr e l a t e d t o t h e d e t e c t i o n o f DMT t h a n a h o s p i t a ld i a g n o s i s o f s c h i z o p h r e n i a .
