Systems

Muscle & Skeletons…oh why?

1. Structure & Support of the body.

2. Protection of organs.

3. Movement

-Away from danger

-Toward food/water

-Toward a mate

Types of Skeletons

Exoskeleton: a hard (usually chitin based) support system on the outside of the body.

Endoskeleton: a calcium based support system on the inside of the body.

Our Endoskeleton

does some amazing things…

We already know about:

Support &

protection

Movement

But it also:

Provides a site for muscles to

anchor.

Produces red and white blood cells in the..?

Skeletal Joint TypesHinge Joint

(knee & elbow)

Gliding Joint (wrist & ankle)

Ball & Socket Joint (hip & shoulder)

Pivot Joint (neck)

Fixed Joint (skull)

Other Fun Parts…

Cartilage: A tough, flexible fiber that cushions between bones and provides some shape to our bodies.

Tendons connect muscle to bone

(Remember: T for TWO types

of tissue)

Ligaments connect bone to bone

Remember: L for LONE (one lone type of tissue)

Muscle Types1. Skeletal Muscle allows for the movement of bones

2. Smooth Muscle makes up most of our internal organs (ex: stomach, intestines)

3. Cardiac Muscle makes up the heart (and only the heart!)

Movement of BonesWRITE THIS DOWN AND KNOW THIS!!!

It takes TWO muscles to move a bone.

Write this at home 10,000 times.

1. It takes TWO muscles to move a bone.

2. Muscles can ONLY PULL a bone. They can NOT push!!

3. Flexors decrease the angle of a joint, while Extensors increase the angle of a joint.

The Best Students Ever Using Their Muscles!

QuizA

B

Which is your FLEXOR? Which is your EXTENSOR?

Disor

dersOUCH!!!

ArthritisPain, stiffness, inflammation and deformity in joints primarily due to a loss of cartilage.

A normal joint with a cartilage “cushion” in between the bones.

An arthritic joint where bone is grinding and scraping on adjoining bone.

TendonitisSwelling and irritation of a tendon, usually near the site the muscle

attaches to the bone.

An irritated tendon

An actual tendon.. supposedly with tendonitis.

Broken Growth PlateA growth plate is a region near the end of long bones where they grow in diameter and length.

A broken growth plate in child is monitored very closely to ensure proper growth after the break.

Know your bones!!

How do the Skeletal and Muscular Systems relate to THREE other body systems?
