Departments of Music and Media Arts: outline for a new building The following documents outline the spatial and technical requirements for a new building to house the Music and Media Arts departments, based on current student levels increased by 10-15% (at undergraduate level). The documents comprise:
(a) a list of functional spaces, showing shared and discrete departmental facilities.
(b) a graphic showing access zones, including a one-way service road to facilitate access to the back of the concert hall, sound stage, equipment store etc.
Background: Royal Holloway’s Music and Media Arts departments are consistently among the college’s top achievers, and outstanding internationally. However, the poor, neglected and on occasion illegal, quality of current facilities is a major impediment to improving recruitment and enhancing the student experience, especially when compared to those of key competitors. e.g. Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and City (Music); York, Goldsmiths, Bournemouth and Westminster (Media Arts). High quality, purpose-built facilities are essential for the adequate provision of the departments’ courses and for future development.
Project Vision: A new shared building for Music and Media Arts presents a major opportunity for the college, with great potential to enhance its overall visibility and reputation, recruitment and the quality of student life. It should be forward-looking and ambitious. As a focal point at the heart of campus life and the college’s Arts Quarter, this new building would provide urgently needed new performance and screening spaces, of benefit not only to the Departments but also to the College as a whole, whilst unifying department facilities currently scattered over seven sites (Wettons Terrace, Williams Building, Woodlands, Arts Building, North Tower, Queens Annexe, Moore Building).
Capitalising on the synergies between the two departments to develop innovative new research collaborations and teaching programmes, this shared space would create a strong sense of community, enhancing interaction amongst both academics and students. In addition, the capacity to fully deliver the teaching programmes of both departments would reduce pressure on college timetabling, and offer sought-after facilities for hire by outside groups during vacation periods (e.g. National Youth Orchestra).
Project Design: Iconic, technically excellent and progressive. Iconic and imaginative architectural design is fundamental to ensuring the building achieves a high national and international profile. The crucial technical challenge will be to embed the highest levels of acoustic performance, as regards spatial acoustics and sound insulation, and audio-visual capacities. As a ‘smart’ building, digital pathways (connected to a central hub/control room) would need to connect the building’s discrete teaching, practice, performance, and recording spaces. This would be linked to a mobile and multi-purpose digital camera and audio recording facility to provide high-level coverage, recording and transmission of campus events and curricular activities. A progressive approach to sustainability, with energy efficient design (alongside solar photovoltaic energy generation and ground source heat exchange), could greatly reduce energy bills long-term and heighten the college’s profile and reputation for innovation.
Developing a media hub for the college. It is proposed that the Music and Media Arts Building is the base for a media production centre – either as an independent or as joint venture with an existing production company. Such a centre could be fundamental to promoting the college brand, showcasing the research of all departments for dissemination by mainstream media, and/or through creating a broad range of online courses. This centre could also offer placements and provide valuable experience for RHUL students.

Student numbers
These plans allow for an increase in both Departments of approximately 10-15% student numbers. The reasons for
this are as follows –
The new facility and the improved student experience this will provide will make both departments more
attractive to potential applicants. This should result in increased applications and increased conversions.
Since the building is occupied by both departments, this will lead to a joint undergraduate degree and, at
least, one potential MA.
The interest in pursuing a number of new programmes in Digital Communications offers opportunities for
growth in both departments.
Diversification of the Music programme, through greater support of popular music and jazz,
will provide an enlarged pool of potential applicants.
Both Departments have been encouraged to develop joint programmes with other courses. Currently our
capacity to do so is limited by the availability of technical space and equipment.
As part of its overall strategy, the College is committed to increasing the numbers of the overall student
body. The lifting of the cap on student numbers in the near future creates an opportunity to do this, and the
building should be envisaged with sufficient flexibility for expansion.

Rationale for specialist music spaces
CONCERT HALL
- The Concert Hall will enable students to learn performance skills in a purpose-designed environment that enables them to interact with the acoustics of a concert hall environment, whether playing as a soloist or as a member of a symphony orchestra or choir, during scheduled classes, rehearsals and regular concert performances.
- The shape, size, structure, surfaces, reverberation characteristics, resonance, fixtures & fittings, of a concert hall must be purpose-designed to complement the playing of acoustic musical instruments.
- The supporting infrastructure for the Concert Hall will integrate readily with other facilities in the same building, including perceptibly noiseless M&E services, audience circulation, loading and transfer of musical instruments, television and sound recording, technical set-up, dressing rooms, etc.
- It also needs to be in the same building as other music facilities because moving instruments backwards and forwards from one site to another will inevitably damage them and cause untold inconvenience in terms of setting up rehearsals. Some instruments like the harpsichords and other keyboards will cost a huge amount to move backwards and forwards from the Early Music Room to a building elsewhere on the campus.
- There will be no benefit in adapting an existing large space elsewhere on campus to serve this function, in terms of student experience, support logistics, and impressing potential students and hiring organisations.
RECITAL ROOM
- This room would be used every week for composition seminars (not currently on the timetable as taught in totally inadequate spaces in Wettons) Mondays 2-6 and Thursdays 9-6
- Necessary for daily rehearsals taking place for lunchtime concerts and other events when concert hall is in use - Necessary space for final recital examinations (MU 1118, MU 2205, 2210,2211, 3393, 3407) taking place
concurrently with finals recitals in Concert Hall for at least two to three weeks of the academic year
EARLY MUSIC ROOM This would be used for: - Storage of three harpsichords (total value £20,000), clavichord and fortepiano (value £4,000), chest of viols
(value £8000), other early instruments e.g. Baroque violins, Baroque bows, Baroque woodwind (value £8000). - Rehearsals for the department's Baroque Ensemble (2 hours / week) and for the student-led society Royal
Holloway Early Music (4 hours / week) and viol consort (when it runs 2 hours/ week) - Students practising on early keyboards and rehearsing with continuo (perhaps 20 hours / week) - Teaching on courses such as Baroque Performance Practice (2 hours / week) or performance activities related to
Helen Deeming's Editing and Notation course MU2328 (another 2 hours/ week) Our current collection of early instruments suffers not just from the frequent moving but also from damage caused by unsuitable conditions e.g. damp in Woodlands room 1; dryness and air-con in the Windsor Auditorium instrument store. Currently a lot of time is wasted moving instruments from one location to another (it takes 2 hours to move an instrument one way across the A30, or we pay £120 for a professional to do it), and we have to finance repairs caused by the unsuitable conditions. So there will be huge efficiency savings. WORLD MUSIC ROOM
This is necessary to accommodate three substantial and priceless collections of instruments which are currently
housed in three separate rooms in the North Tower
- Sundanese Gamelan, which takes up floor space of 4 square metres and cannot be stored away, Korean Drums, Andean Band and place for rehearsing Balkan Ensemble.
-
5
- Needs space elsewhere in the room for an ensemble of 20+ with chairs and room to move around and dance.
- Secure storage for priceless large drums and fragile instruments.

Rationale for viewing facilities
Viewing film and television material is fundamental to the work that is undertaken in the Department. Students not
only study audio-visual texts as part of their education in the history of film and television but they also need to be
able to reflect on their own productions as a means of stretching their own creative potentialities. It is therefore of
crucial importance that students are provided with the opportunity to view audio-visual material under optimal
conditions. This is particularly so if the Department aspires to maintain its standing as a leading provider of media
education and training. Many universities (such as Reading and York) have invested in top-level facilities that
include viewing spaces that compare favourably with commercial cinemas. Up until now, the Department has
lacked the quality of viewing facilities appropriate to a Department of our calibre and this has been a source of
frustration to staff and students alike.
The new building will therefore require proper cinema spaces that will allow films and TV programmes to be shown
to best advantage and with sufficient capacity to permit students to study properly the films that they are required
to view, and to view their own and their fellow students’ work.
This space will also permit the possibility of public screenings, the forging of links with the local community, the
viewing of films as part of the teaching of Departments outside Media Arts and Music and as a focal point for the
screening of films as a campus student lead activity thus providing a crucial addition to the improvement of the
student experience on campus.
The cinemas require excellent sightlines, a dry absorbent acoustic to minimise the coloration of installed multi-
speaker playback sound systems, installed comfortable seating for long duration screenings, house lighting control,
motorized screen drapes, and links to the building’s technical hub to enable screening of student work direct from
the media server and recording and recording or streaming of lectures and conference events.
The large cinema also requires a space in front of the audience and well beneath the projection beam and audience
sightline to enable musical ensembles to perform live music to accompany films. This will be a relatively unusual
facility for a university, which facilitates a distinctive collaboration between Media Arts and Music. Close proximity
to adjacent support spaces will enable musical instruments to be loaded in as required and minimise potential
manual handling issues.
It is also of fundamental importance that all seminar rooms and smaller teaching spaces are properly equipped with
AV facilities (including convenient lighting control for the lecturer) that will allow film and television to be viewed
and analysed in an appropriately professional manner. In the past, sub-standard projectors and players, screens that
are too small, noisy ventilation systems and a lack of black-outs have inhibited the teaching of film and television;
the new development provides the opportunity to set this right.
Info on York University Facilities.
The main cinema is equipped to beyond the standard of an ordinary cinema in as much as it can handle a wider
range of inputs than you would have in a commercial setup. This is to allow feed of material directly from the
postproduction facilities. Cinema itself is 146 raked seats, screen across the full width with movable side masking to
cover all aspect ratios, Dolby 7.1 surround with three behind screen speakers, 12 surround speakers, and a sub.
Projection is from a Barco digital cinema projector and there is a wider range of input possibilities than normal for a
commercial cinema. The projection box also includes a data projector which links to computer and Blu-ray player
built into a lectern for teaching purposes. Lighting, sound levels, etc. can be controlled from the lectern or the
projection box. The cinema thus doubles as a lecture theatre. The cinema is also wired for installation of a sound
mixing desk.
-
7
Several smaller teaching rooms in the building are equipped with ceiling hung data projectors, Blu-ray players, 5.1
audio, retractable hung screens, and computers. The graduate and undergraduate postproduction teaching labs are
similarly equipped, though with more surround sound speakers, and the postproduction rooms are similarly
equipped, though set up for editing of image and/or sound, of course. These are industry standard and are available
(and used) for commercial hire. The main theatre also has a hung screen that can be lowered to stage level and a
high quality data projector in the control room. The Black Box theatre/shooting stage is also equipped for
projection.

Media Arts Shared usage Music
[New facility]
It is proposed that the Music and
Media Arts Building is the base for a
media production centre – either as
an independent or as joint venture
with an existing production
company. Such a centre could be
fundamental to promoting the
college brand, showcasing the
research of all departments for
dissemination by mainstream
media, and/or through creating a
broad range of online courses. This
centre could also offer placements
and provide valuable experience for
RHUL students.

The Sound Stage is an operational space that will enable a number of film sets to be constructed to specific production and class teaching requirements. Sets will be left in place for as long as required for working
productions and whenever scheduled classes need to break out from a Media Studio into more specialized practical space to apply content covered in the media practice studio workshop.

The back lot will provide an exterior space to facilitate the teaching of production skills using exterior space, including dressing exterior scenes, filming picture vehicles, and other scenes that are difficult to film safely
in public, including use of replica weapons, special visual effects, etc. It will be scheduled as an operational space in much the same way as the Sound Stage.
The Foley Theatre is a specialist facility for live recording of sound effects in sync with filmed action, including walking on different surfaces, etc.
Digital Lab 4 differs from the teaching labs in that the layout facilitates individual and small group work rather than front-facing to a projection screen. This is a 24-7 learning resource that can be arranged in zones for
particular collaborations groups, such as Sibelius users, Movie Magic users, After Effects, etc.
In addition to offering 24-7 resource for advanced film editing and sound design, these rooms will sometimes be used for individual tutorials
In addition to offering 24-7 resource for voice recording, the Sound Studio will sometimes be used for individual tutorials
