¶ Introduction

Singing the opening dialogue, preface, Sanctus and conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer has been part of the received tradition of theChurch since the earliest times. The President’s Edition of CommonWorship accordingly contains a music supplement with settings of Eucharistic Prayers A, B, C and E to chants derived from thetraditional melodies of the Church of England, based principally on Sarum tones. There are also three examples of new settings (of Prayers D, F and G) prepared especially for Common Worship.Settings of Eucharistic Prayers F and G to the traditional chantmelodies may be found in the Common Worship area of the Churchof England web site.

Contents of this Section

The present volume is intended to include everything needed by thepresident for a celebration of Holy Communion according to OrderOne (contemporary language) on Festivals, Lesser Festivals andSpecial Occasions. This music section completes that provision. For Prayers A, B, C and E (the prayers with which the Prefaces and Extended Prefaces contained in this volume may be used),there is provision for the singing of the dialogue, preface anddoxology to the traditional chant melodies. This includes provisionfor Proper Prefaces. The settings are by Father Peter Allan CR.

In order to keep this section within manageable proportions, somematerial has not been included. For Prayer B, only the dialogue, preface, acclamations and doxology are set to music, and not thewhole prayer as in the President’s edition. For each Festival andSpecial Occasion and for the Commemoration of the FaithfulDeparted (the only Lesser Festival for which one of the Commons is not used), one Preface and one Extended Preface have been set,and for each Common no more than two.

Singing the Chant

All the chants are presented at modal pitch, with C as the notionalreciting note. However, the G clef (devised for the President’sedition of Common Worship) is a reminder that this pitch is relativerather than absolute. In most cases, the president will wish to singthese chants at a lower pitch, most likely beginning the dialogue onD, E flat, E or F (with a principal reciting note of G, A flat, A or Bflat) according to the range of the voice.

The chant should be sung flowingly at a steady speaking pace, bearing in mind the shape and stress of the text; hollow notes areprovided where the reciting pitch is unchanged, and doubled blacknotes indicate suggested lengthening or weighted sound. Often thiswill be roughly equivalent to doubling the length of the note. At theend of a phrase such as ‘Lift up your hearts’, which has two notes setto ‘hearts’, both notes are slightly lengthened, with the second sungmore gently than the first.

For those Common Prefaces in which the saint’s name comes at theend of a line, alternative settings are provided for names of one, two, three or four syllables. In the case of three-syllable names there aretwo alternatives – one for those in which the first syllable is stressedand one for use where the stress is on the second syllable.
