The power of radio lies in the repetition.Commercial radio programme directors and heads

of music, generally agree that to really make a songaccepted by listeners, high rotations are the answer. When you believe in a song, flaunt it!

Individual stations' "power" rotation for top songsusually vary from 60 to 70 spins per week. In the caseof the latter, that means airing a song once every twohours, 24 hours a day. But from the US comes newsthat some programmers there are now pushing thatparticular envelope even further.

This week, M&M's US sister publication Airplay Mon-itor reports that the latest trend among some program-mers working in US Top 40 radio is for top rotation titlesmoving 'into the 80-90 plays per week bracket. One sta-tion, KRBV/Dallas, was even reported to have played itstop song 115 times last week.

Mathematics dictate that if you only listen tothese stations for a tiny amount of time, you'll besure to hear their strongest song. The effects ofpounding a few hits in this way has a number of

impacts on the station's wider playlist. It narrows itdown to a very small number of titles, making it moredifficult for new titles to enter. It also burns titles ata quicker rate than more moderate rotations, and thenumber of gold and recurrent titles in the library isinevitably cut.

So, are we likely to see such mega -rotations inEurope? In most markets, high rotations were intro-duced in commercial radio in the mid -'80s, when pro-grammers started to realise the virtue of the tech-nique and saw the impact on their ratings.

Although European commercial radio usually fol-lows US programming trends, there is much to bet thatin this case it won't go as far as it has in the US, sincethe competitive environment is different in Europe(making it less necessary to use such guerrilla tactics)and because listening patterns inEurope are also slightly different.

It'll be interesting to see inthe US whether stations will beable to sustain such rotations. Alot depends, of course, on theright kind of product being con-sistently available. In the longterm, however, it will probablyachieve only one goal-that oftiring the listener.

EMI investors say 'yes' to mergerby Gordon MassonInternational news editor, Billboard

LONDON- The proposed $20 billionmerger between the music divisionsof Time Warner and EMI Groupnow awaits the outcome of competi-tion authorities on both sides of theAtlantic, after the deal received anoverwhelming vote of confidence atthe latter's extraordinary generalmeeting in London on June 26.

Less than 1% of EMI'sinvestors voted against themerger, despite rumoursthat a consortium of inter-national companies wereplanning an 11th hour bidfor EMI.

Only a handful of share-holders questioned EMIchairman Eric Nicoli about themerits of the merger, and mostseemed to be preoccupied by thefact that Time Warner will havemore say in the joint venture.

Charles Ashcroft, EMI Groupgeneral counsel and company secre-tary, admitted: "Time Warner [will

have] control of the board." ButNicoli added, "In practice it would bevery unlikely to find ourselves [theboard] voting very often, if ever."Nicoli moved to further placateshareholder fears by saying that thereason behind Time Warnersix board, members as opposed toEMI's five, was a legal stipulationarising from Warner EMI Music'spartnership status in the US. Thatstatus demands that Time Warner

needs voting control of anyjoint venture, Nicoli said.

In its circular toinvestors, EMI further clar-ifies the situation. It statesthat "EMI and Time Warn-er have agreed to createtwo entities to conducttheir music businesses

throughout the world. One, WEMUS, will be a Delaware [-registered]general partnership that will oper-ate principally in the US, Japan andCanada. The other, WEM UK, willbe a company incorporated and reg-istered in England and Wales thatwill operate principally in the UK

and other countries outside the US,Canada and Japan. Both EMI andTime Warner will indirectly own50% of the equity in each of WEMUS and WEM UK."

Warner's upper hand in the pro-50-50 venture also led to

investor concern that the US -basedcompany might move to underminethe value of EMI to facilitate a cut-price buy-out of EMI shares atsometime in the future. Nicoliresponded by saying that the dealhad been constructed in a way thatwould protect shareholders' inter-ests, and such a move would be"very unlikely" as it also wouldharm Warner's financial standing.

On a positive note for Warner andEMI employees, it would seem thatthe potential number of staff cutshas decreased. When the deal wasannounced in January, EMI Record-ed Music president/CEO Ken Berrysaid around 3,000 staff would be lostover three years following the merg-er. At the shareholders meeting, however, Nicoli stated that the fig-ure would be 2,000 over three years.

New programming shades for Couleur 3by Emmanuel Legrand

LAUSANNE - Thierry Catherine, programme director of Switzer-land's French-speaking alternativemusic station Couleur 3, is to stepdown at the end of the summerafter 10 years in the job-and thestation is also set to be repositioned.

"I've been doing this job for adecade and its time to do somethingelse," he tells M&M. The search forhis replacement has already start-ed, and Catherine says it is likely tobe someone from outside the sta-tion's parent corporation, Swisspublic broadcaster RSR.

Catherine will continue to workfor RSR, and his first project will belooking after the programming ofclassical station Espace 2. He willthen start working at the begin-ning of next year on the creation ofthematic channels for digital radioand the Internet.

Before his depar-ture from Couleur 3,however, Catherine isfinalising .a reposi-tioning of the station, which in thepast couple of years has beenembracing newer music styles suchas techno and jungle in addition toits core alternative rock component.

To research the repositioning, the station has been running aseries of auditorium tests in Genevain collaboration with US researchcompany Broadcast Architecture inorder to get a better sense of listen-ers' music tastes.

"The results are quitetelling," reveals Catherine."The is an overwhelmingdemand for rock music,

which suggests that weshould reposition our station closer to[alternative] rock again. We still have afew things to analyse, but I will bemaking recommendations along theselines to my management."

One is thatHollywood powerbroker Michael Ovitz (in partner-ship with supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle)bought 51% of the company from the university stu-dents who created it. The site therefore containshigh -profile material that consumers actually wantrather than lists of unknown new artists. The secondis that it quietly offers Scour Exchange, a programfor trading music files among registered users inmuch the way the legally beleaguered Napster does.

Vive la difference with a French major? For the first time in recenthistory, a major record com-pany is under French con-trol, following the acquisitionof Seagram by French con-glomerate Vivendi. The newVivendi Universal will be amedia powerhouse in whichmusic will be key.Emmanuel Legrand askedFrench industry executiveshow they view the deal.

    "It's great for the

national ego, but alot of people inFrance will probably

    notice that the

    origin of the

ownership does notchange the way thesystem operates."

    Bruno Lion,executive manager,

    Peermusic France,

There was a definite sense ofpride in French music industrycircles when on June 20 it wasannounced that UniversalMusic was becoming a French

company, fulfilling a long-awaitedpromise that France would one dayplay a leading role in the entertain-ment industry.

"All things considered, I prefer tosee record companies owned byFrench interests," comments EMIMusic CEO Marc Lumbroso, thenewly elected president of Frenchmusic industry body SNEP. "At last aFrench major!" echoes Gilles Bres-sand, president of indie label XII bisRecords, who was recently re-electedvice president of industry body SNEP.Bressand summarised the feeling ofmany working in the French industry.

Vivendi Universal's new chairmanJean-Marie Messier says that makingsuch a deal was a matter of national

pride. "Universal Music isthe world leader and is, inFrance, by far the leader,"stated Messier. "It repre-sents close to half of all localproduction, which will nowget back to France. This isquite cool."

Indeed, the industrynotes with satisfaction thereturn into France's fold ofa large chunk of French

music through the Universal/Poly-Gram catalogue, with acts such asJohnny Hallyday, Mylene Farmer,,Florent Pagny, Eddy Mitchell, AlainBashung, Zebda and heritage gemssuch as Jacques Brel, LeoFerre, Georges Brassens,or Barbara. UniversalMusic France accountsfor roughly 50% of domes-tic repertoire sales.

Ironic twistSNEP managing directorHerve Rony says he takesgenuine pleasure in see-ing a company the size ofUniversal Music becom-ing French -owned. "It'squite an ironic twist of fate after somany French labels have beenacquired by international majors,"smiles Rony.

"We've heard so many peoplelamenting about the lack of a Frenchmajor it's not the time to be picky-itfeels good to know that there will be aFrench company playing a major rolein the worldwide environment," addsHenri Belolo, president and founderof indie dance label Scorpio Music."It's 100% French, it combines con-tent and multimedia, it's very positiveand it will create many opportunitiesfor indies."

However, French industry execu-tives are realistic about the impact thedeal will have on the exposure ofFrench music on the internationalmarket. "There is nothing which saysthat now Universal Music has Frenchownership, it will suddenly transformVivendi into the ambassador for

French production in the world,"remarks SNEP's Rony, who like manythinks that Universal Music will con-tinue to be run according to what themarket dictates. This feeling is backedby the fact that the music division willcontinue to be governed from the USby Vivendi Universal vice-chairmanEdgar Bronfman Jr. and UniversalMusic chairman/CEO Doug Morris.

Shift in emphasisRony says that one of the directeffects of the deal is to shift theemphasis in the music industry backtowards Europe. Rony adds that itbalances the fact that EMI appears tobe moving closer to a US merger. "It isa welcome balance, and it confirmsthe move we have witnessed in recenttimes towards the increasing weightof European production in today'smusic environment," says Rony. "Itreinforces a dominant feeling thatEurope was not represented in termsof shareholding [of major companies]at the level of its real market value."

Scorpio's Belolo concurs inanalysing that there will now be oneGerman owned major (BMG), oneJapanese (Sony Music), one half-US/half-British (Warner EMI) andone French. "With two majors fromEurope, one from North America andone from Asia, it reflects quite wellthe strength of each market," saysBelolo, who adds that since the dealwas announced, he has received manycalls from US industry people "whowere suddenly realising that thereweren't that many US majors left."

    Johnny

Vivendi supremo Jean-MarieMessier was pleased to bring Poly -Gram back into European ownership."Two years ago, when we saw Poly -Gram quit Europe for the US, we felta twinge of regret. Bringing it back toFrance is for us a major satisfaction,"said Messier.

Domestic benefits? The concept of a French major haslong been a favourite topic of discus-sion in France, especially within indiecircles and in government. However, attempts to build a serious domesticcompetitor to foreign -owned recordcompanies have always failed. Butthere is much speculation as to theextent the French industry will actu-ally benefit from having one of thefive majors-even better, the marketleader-owned by a French company.

Bruno Lion, who in the late '80sand early '90s was an advisor to the

    Hallyday,

then minister of culture Jack Lang, and who is now executive manager atPeermusic France, doubts that havinga French major will change the sys-tem. "It's great for the national ego,but a lot of people in France will prob-ably notice that the origin of the own-ership does not change the way thesystem operates. Vivendi Universal'stop management might be French, butthey have shown in the past that theyknow how to appoint the right peoplein the right places, regardless of theirnationality. To change a corporate cul-ture takes time, and the people whorun the company have no interest intrashing it."

Former PolyGram France presi-dent Gilles Paire, who is now a part-ner in indie company Naive, concurs:"After all, PolyGram had a Frenchboss [Alain Levy] and I'm not surethat has done much to change themusic industry's global balance, although it has probably opened Poly -Gram up to take more into accountthe diversity of today's music world."

A global industryHe elaborates: "A record companythese days is a global structure andtherefore its management must beglobal. Management these daysescapes strict geographical boundaries.Messier said he will keep the currentmanagement of both the studio and therecord company in the US, and thatmakes sense. However, having aFrench parent company will probablyhave an impact on the company's cor-porate culture in the long run in that it

could give it a greatestopenness to the world."

Paire says that in thelight of the AOL/TimeWarner/EMI deal and thecreation of Vivendi Uni-versal, the key questionswill be how the neworganisations deal withcontent, and will con -garners gain from thesenew conglomerates? "Willdistributors-the ownersof the pipes-become

more important than the creators? Will pipes have a positive impact oncreation?" asks Paire, who fears thatincreasing concentration "will createmassive problems for those who don'thave the same power or the sametools to address the consumers. Themore the market gets concentrated, the more diversity is at stake."

Belolo, on the other hand, viewsopportunities in seeing big structuressuch as Universal joining forces withtelecom companies. "The conventionalwisdom is to say that the distributionof music will go through differentplatforms. If my current distributormoves into those new areas, I canbenefit from these new opportunities, all the more so as the deals to get onthese new platforms will not be exclu-sive. Besides, the bigger the distribu-tors become, the more they need newstructures like indies to identify, nur-ture and develop the music."

BANGIN' TUNEBang by Robbie Rivera presents Rhythm Bangers(SFP/US) is widely tipped as a potential crossovermonster this summer. Rivera's production approachhas brought a dose of freshness and irreverance todance music that the form was surely lacking. Bangwill not receive any Nobel Prizes with a lyric thatlargely consists of "bang -a -ding -a -ding" but, for itssense of fun alone, it should do the business.

HOT AND EXOTICThe rash of tropically flavoured tunes released to cap-italise on holiday fever inevitably produces a hit ortwo. Estrella's El Ritmo Caliente (New MusicInternational/Italy) employs a sub -Gloria Estefanapproach and, despite lyrics like "el ritmo caliente, misangre es caliente" (the hot rhythm, my blood is hot),could appeal to programmers looking for 'a bit of exot-ic' to spice up the playlist.

TIME'S TIME IS NOWThe vocal -heavy Up & Down (Don't Fall In Love WithMe) by Billy More (Time/Italy) has every chance ofmaking it on to daytime radio thanks to a searing soulinfluenced chorus that has "anthem" writ large acrossits grooves. Backed up by a riffy keyboard figure anda series of sub -hooks, the string heavy production isin truth more pop than dance. Thanks to this trackand The Love Bite's Take Your Time, it promises to bean excellent summer for a thoroughly revitalisedTime Records.

SHAGGY SAMPLES JACKOShaggy has teamed up with producers Jam & Lewis, sampled Michael Jackson's Shake Your Body (Down ToThe Ground) and produced a minor masterpiece in theform of Dance & Shout (MCA America). The juxtaposi-tion of Jackson's hormone -free squeak and Shaggy'sruff, wonderfully world weary tones is a perfect mar-riage. A selection of remixes by Pussy 2000, MPC andKlub Kings are uniformly top-notch although the KlubKings vs Shaggy Progressive Mix is the best of thebunch.

THERE'S A QUIET RIOT GOING ONAfter their acclaimed but modest selling debut CabinFever, Muki are back with a second album, Quiet Riot(Mantra/UK), that straddles jazz, funk, soul and D 'n'B without trading in its sense of direction and pur-pose. Making good use of live instrumentation such assax, bass, drums and percussion throughout most ofthe album, QR is undeniably fresh and big-hearted. Italso includes a superb version of John Martyn'smaudlin classic I Dont Want To Know alongside othervocal tracks, amongst them a cover of Al Green's Judy, superbly interpreted by Winston Roberts, that wouldmake good, if unorthodox, singles.

Elsewhere, even a totally instrumental track likeFunky Sofa betrays the duo's soul roots. A moody senseof late night laziness and a splendid trumpet solo cre-ate a sassy, early '70s soundtrack feel. Overall the mostimpressive aspect of Quiet Riot is the way in which tra-ditional instruments, making music that constantlyflirts with jazz, end up sounding thoroughly contempo-rary. A very smart record, but hopefully one that is nottoo smart to shift some well deserved units.

Flower power, dance style by Marc Maes

Dance music tends not to rely on extensivetouring to break its acts-unlike more tra-ditional guitar music-but Belgian danceoutfit Praga Khan are an exception to therule. On the back ofa hectic live festivalschedule, their 1999 album21st Century Skin(Antler/EMI) sold over100,000 units internationally.

"The band played the 1998Beach Rock festival [then] thenext year, Praga Khan playedboth the Werchter festival [inBelgium] and Glastonbury[UK]," explains their managerMichel Lenaerts, adding thatthis summer Praga Khan arescheduled in for the Werchterfestival with Oasis, the Bizarrefestival in Germany with Underworld andthe launch of MTV Poland in August.

Support from the European festival cir-cuit now bodes well for the group's newalbum Mutant Funk, according to EMIMusic Belgium's managing director ErwinGoegebeur. `With the new album we are def-initely going for releases in France,Germany and Holland. We also presentedthem at our EMI Barcelona conference inJune," he says. "Praga Khan is a good exam-ple of EMI looking beyond its traditional popand catalogue market-they have the kindof repertoire we want to be strong in."

Mutant Funk came out in Belgium onMay 5 and is scheduled for a pan-European release (including Scandinavia)in Septemberl

The Power of the Flower-the first sin-gle off Mutant Funk-is proving popular

with both alternative radio stations suchas Studio Brussel and cross -over CHRnetworks like Top Radio. "The band wasinvited to play a live concert on the roof ofour studio building which was televisedon Kanaal 2 and the Internet, and broad-cast on Top Radio," reports Peter

Hoogland, head of program-ming at Top Radio.

Praga Khan's new singleLove is now on the network'sA -list, where it receives eightplays a day, and on June 23the dance act received a lifeachievement award at the TopRadio Awards at a sold -outFlanders Expo hall.

The Praga Khan storybegan a decade ago whentheir debut single Rave Alarmentered the dance charts in

1991, but it was two years later, whenPraga Khan supplied music for the USfilms Basic Instinct and Sliver-where theact is signed to Rick Rubin's AmericanRecordings-that their profile was raisedsignificantly. Ironically, Praga Khan, fea-turing Antler Subway record label co-founder Maurice Engelen, were unable tocapitalise on this success due to other com-mitments.

Alongside his Praga Khan persona,Engelen, and dance producer OlivierAdams, make up the nucleus of Lords ofAcid, a highly popular dance act in the USwhose most recent single Pussy spent over100 weeks in Billboard's dance sales charts. The international success of Lords of Acid, plus remixes of other artists, put backPraga Khan's own career until 1997 whenPragamatic returned them to the charts.

Revenge of the outsiderby Kai R. Lofthus

Despite enlisting the collaborative talentsof fellow Scandinavian artists Petter (BMGSweden) and Thomas Rusiak (UniversalMusic Sweden)-who alsocontributed to the songCrossing Borders on lastyear's TP Allstars albumNorske Byggeklosser(Tee/Virgin)-there's surpris-ingly little Norwegianflavour to the music of rap-per Andres Rafael Diaz Rosa.

Even so, his debut soloalbum 2050, released onJune 12 through TeeProductions/Virgin RecordsNorway and featuring thesingles Star From Trini andLa Vida Loca, has alreadysold some 3,000 units, according to Virgin RecordsNorway marketing managerBjorn Rogstad. "It's a pleas-ant figure for us," he explains. "It means alot for a company like Virgin to have top-notch artists in all genres. The entire TeeProductions roster is so far a couple ofleagues above everyone else," Rogstadbelieves.

2050 was released in Sweden on June 19and comes out in Denmark towards the endof the summer. But Diaz is not relying sole-

ly on his skills as a rapper to earn a living. In Norway, he is also a well known radiopresenter, club DJ, consultant to BMG'sNorwegian affiliate, and writer on a num-ber of the country's lifestyle magazines-

'all of which has lent him mas-sive credibility among theScandinavian rap community.

Another surprising aspectof the multi -talented andcharismatic Diaz is that heis the product of Jessheim-whose zipcode he used forthe album title-a smalltown which wasn't alwayssupportive of its extrovertedmutli-media loving son. TheUllensaker district, wherehis home town is based, onlyhouses some 20,000 peopleand, as Diaz says, "I wasnever physically harrassed, but people never really tookyou seriously. I was alwaysthe outsider. But when you

are confronted with laughter it gives youcourage to proceed creatively," he says.

When Diaz recently returned toJessheim for his album release party, hechose to do so in style and let people knowthat he was back. He arrived in a heli-copter and performed on a stage whichoccupied most of the main street, whichwas closed for the occasion.

  • M&M ONLINE

Industry retunes to the winThe European music industry, ever aware of the potentialof digital technology, is nowfocussing on exploiting therapid growth of the mobilephone. Juliana Korantengexplores the advent of WAR

WHAT IS WAP?WAP stands for Wireless ApplicationProtocol, the technology that enablesconsumers to access the Internet viatheir mobile phones.

Unlike the wired and plugged -inPC owner, WAP technology meansconsumers can access the Net to buyand, ultimately, listen to music whileon the move.

Currently, mobile phones aremostly used for voice conversationsand text -based services such asShort Message Services (SMS), thewireless system that allows users tosend and receive basic 160 -charac-ter messages on the mobile phones'tiny display screens. Marketers areusing SMS for transmitting promo-tional messages.

Although music -related applica-tion is still at the very early stages,as our main story illustrates, WAPgoes one step further than SMS.WAP enables mobile phones andother handset devices such as thePDA (personal digital assistant) andpocket PCs to log on the Net with alimited amount of interactivity.

Because of the mobile phone'ssmall screen, WAP cannot access thesame rich multimedia content avail-able on PC -based Web sites. Instead,WAP content is customised in a spe-cially written format. For example, the address for Boxman's PC -basedWeb site is http://www.boxman.com.But the address for the etailer's Wapsite is http://wap.boxman.com.

Rich -media Internet contentwill, however, be accessible via thenext third -generation (3G) mobilephones and handheld devices, andwill feature high-speed systems forlistening to music samples, down-loading and streaming, plus broad-casting high -quality radio andvideo services. These 3G wirelesssystems will include GPRS(General Packet Radio Service)and UMTS (Universal MobileTelecoms System).

Look out for other 3G -capablemobile devices for listening to musicsuch as smartphones, communica-tors, MP3 audio devices, and Sony'snew Wristman wristwatches.

European companies such asEMI Music and subsidiaryVirgin Records UK and newFrench media giant VivendiUniversal; radio stations

including Britain's Capital Radioand France's NRJ; plus musicstores from FNAC in France andpan-European Boxman (see casestudy, page 7) are dancing to a newonline beat called WAR

WAP-based technology (see side-bar) offers a wireless alternative toreach the same consumers who'vebought and listened to music in phys-ical stores, on wired media such asTV, radio, CD players, and down-loaded MP3 files via their PCs.

The technol-ogy aims tostop mobileconsumers intheir tracks, literally, andencouragethem to usetheir hand-helddevices to surfthe Internet.During thenext 18 monthsto two years, several bigplayers will bepushing to touttheir business-es throughWAP-enabledmobile phones and sim-ilar handset devicessuch as personal organ-isers and pocket PCs.

"It's still early daysand it is an immaturemarket," confirms Box -man's Chris Codring-ton. "The next 12months is going to bean intense learningperiod for everyone."

"Wireless applications will have avery positive impact by driving musicsales through an additional distribu-tion channel," says New York -basedKevin Conroy, BMG Entertainment'schief marketing officer and presidentof new technology.

Significant opportunityConroy agrees that the majors can'tignore the new phenomenon. "BMGsees the penetration of wireless ser-vices as a significant opportunity forbringing our artists' music to con-sumers. BMG is actively pursuingopportunities in this area," he asserts.

Statistics from the UK -basedresearch organisation the ARC Groupsupport this stance. The number ofmobile phon ubscribers wdrldwide isestimated t p from 430 million in1999 to 1.2 billion in 2004, and therewill be more mobile devices withInternet access than fixed PCs.

Japan might be the world's biggestsingle mobile Internet market. But

mobile phone pene-tration in Europe is45% compared with31% in the US. InNordic marketssuch as Finland, thepenetration rate is65%, rising to a 90%penetration amongteenagers.

EMI has linkedup with Genie,British Telecom'smobile phone Inte-rnet service. Therecord companysends Genie sub-scribers SMS (see

    - sidebar)text reminders of salespromotions at HMV storesor artists making a promo-tional appearance there.

pact by drivingmusic sales through an additional

"We shall be doing more trials andplan to deliver streamed music [tomobile phones]," says Danny vanEmden, Virgin Music UK's director ofnew media.

Jean-Christophe Hermann, Paris -based CEO of FNAC Direct, declinedto comment on the company's existingWAP-related projects. But he admitsthat FNAC is examining whether touse the technology for sending (pro-motional) information or carrying outwireless transactions.

The next generationLeading European radio stations are, however, bypassing WAP and waitingfor the third -generation (3G) high-speed access mobile phones and pock-et PCs to start offering online ser-vices. "We don't think the [WAP] tech-nology has reached the level of stabil-ity, penetration and consumer accep-

tance," says TomLaidlaw, head of pro-gramming and produc-tion at Capital In-teractive, the onlinedivision of London'sCapital Radio Group.

Last year, UK -based Ginger MediaGroup, parent compa-ny of rock stationVirgin Radio parentcompany (www.virgin-radio.com), joined for-ces with Swedishmobile phone manu-

    Jan Ragnarsson

facturer Ericsson to test radio broad-cast via 3G mobile phones and other"wireless Internet terminals."

"These 3G phones can access real-time MP3 downloads and thereforeradio, because the bandwidth allowsthis," explains Virgin Radio'sspokesperson Lee Roberts. He addsthat some 750,000 people already lis-ten to Virgin Radio via the Web, 40%of whom are based outside the UK.

New media owners? However, while established musicindustry companies jockey for posi-tion, it could be that the mobile phonemanufacturers will become key play-ers in the future.

Ericsson has been instrumental inseveral WAP-related and other wire-less music trials. Joint projects withBoxman and Virgin Radio are gradu-ally giving Ericsson valuable insightinto how consumers will enjoy musicin the wireless world.

In March, Ericsson unveiled FMRadio, a small attachable device thatcan turn a mobile phone into aportable radio. Its tiny earphonesmean users can listen to the radio butthe audio sound is immediatelymuted when the listener receivesincoming phone calls.

In Sweden this summer, Ericssonlaunches a plug-in MP3 memorydevice that can store up to 60 minutesof music files copied from a PC andcan be attached to Ericsson mobilephones for listening.

"Music and mobile devices are aperfect combination," says JanRagnarsson, head of business devel-opment, media & entertainment forEricsson's Wireless e -Solutions unit.

  • Bless to raise sales volumesBoxman: aPan -European online entertainmentetailer Boxman.com is providingsome of the most advanced WAPpackages for mobile music services.Boxman's eight localised Web musicstores, in the UK, the Netherlands,Germany, France, Finland, Norway,Sweden and Denmark, come with aWAP version for mobile phone users(http://wap.boxman.com).

Now the Scandinavian -originatedcompany with headquarters in theUK is working with manufacturersof mobile phones and other handsetdevices, mobile phone network oper-ators and stores, plus radio stationsto home in on Europe's fast-growingmobile phone users.

Currently, people can order theirlocal Top 10 CDs from Boxman viamobile phones. But the company isalso aiming high. "We believe mobilephones will be the impulse -purchasedevices for music because they allowthe interface between what you'rehearing on the radio and a directlink with [Internet] services," saysChristopher Codrington, Boxman's

    case studyVP of commercial partnerships.

Boxman entered the WAP arenain August 1999 with the BoxmanMobile Music Store, several monthsbefore Europe's leading mobilephone makers such as Ericsson andNokia and mobile phone networkswere commercially offering WAP-enabled services.

Initially, Boxman sold physicalCDs via Ericsson's own WAP portalto owners of Ericsson's MC 218handheld organiser. Today, Nokia,Ericsson and Motorola mobile phoneusers can shop on Boxman. As cansubscribers to an array of Europeanmobile phone networks that includeSweden's Telia, Telenor and NetComin Norway, TeleDanmark, Dutch ser-vice KPN, France's Itineris andBouygues, plus Germany's Mann-esmann. Boxman is now in talkswith British mobile phone networksOrange and Cellnet.

Additionally, discussions havebegun with leading British radiostations developing WAP Internetsites. Among these are Virgin Radio,

Chrysalis, and EMAP. Other poten-tial European radio partnersinclude France's NRJ, he adds.

Ultimately, the plan will allowconsumers to use their handsets toimmediatelyorder an albumfeaturing a songheard on Box -man's radio sta-tion partners.

Boxman isalso using mobilephones as directmarketing toolsto send SMS textmessages withupdates on newreleases. "In fu-ture, we'll also beable to send youwhat's coming upby allowing youto listen to 10 -second sampleson the phonebefore you order,"Codrington adds.

The move tomobile online retail means Boxman'sreach among interactive customers

is among the most extensive inEurope. In addition to PC -basedWeb sites (www.boxman.com), musicfans can shop on Boxman via inter-active TV on digital satellite services

such as the UK'sOpen (part ofBSkyB's digitalservices), and ondigital cable suchas NTL in theUK.

Codringtonadmits Boxmancannot afford tobe complacent."But because webelieve that 50%of our customerswill be able tofully interactwith us in abouttwo years' time,we're getting agood overall pic-ture of what'shappening inthe market-place, especially

MADASUNTHE WAY IT ISV2Release date: August 28The UK production line foridentikit girl groups continuesapace with V2's Madasun-three all singing, all dancingearly-twentysomethings formed

three years ago by a management companylooking for a "Spice Girls -type" act. Decidingto go it alone, the girls soon secured a dealwith V2 and support tours with Five andBoyzone, before denting the UK Top 20 withtheir first two singles, Don't You Worry andWalking On Water. Madasun's debut albumis named after its epic torch song and fallssomewhere between the current trend forsynthetic pop and the more credible brand ofR&B peddled by the likes of TLC. The act areat their strongest when they eschew the girlgroup blueprint and head off in their owndirection which takes in elements of soul,MOR and indie rock, courtesy of co -writersWayne Hector and Ali Tenant (Westlife, Boy -zone). With Madasun, V2 have beefed up theusual anaemic content of the genre andshould have a major success on its hands-both in Europe and the US.

JAMELIADRAMAParlophone Rhythm SeriesRelease date: June 26Described by her recordlabel as "surely the UK'sbrightest R&B hope",Birmingham diva JameliaDavies follows her top five

single Money with this co -written debut album onEMI/Parlophone's Rhythm imprint-home toBeverley Knight and Swede Stephen Simmonds.Money proved popular with radio and record buy-ers alike thanks to its distinctive operatic arpeg-gio and "money don't say you love me" lyric. Thefollow-up, Call Me, reached number 11 in the UKwhen it was released on June 5 (June 12, rest ofEurope) and repeats the classical touch with anunlikely harpsichord riff. Indeed, an oboe turnsup on Not With You, while a lightly -pickedacoustic guitar adds to the sugary, mellifluousR&B strains of One Day. But the instrumentationis not what makes this album stand -out --ratherit is Jamelia's wonderfully assured singing withits rich golden tone and note -perfect inflectionthat both belies her tender years and justifies herlabel's optimism. Each of the 13 tracks on Drama, including the Bee Gees' cover Guilty, are assmooth and lightly spun as silk and, equallyimpressive, they are unmistakably Jamelia-which is some achievement for a 19 year -olddebutante.
