In designing MusicGeek™ we took our inspiration from experience, starting with the essentials for an engaging music discovery experience: geeky music facts and expert opinion. Then we added flexibilty - creating 6 different types of tag - making 34 kinds of questions that can be asked, covering a catalogue of over a million artists. Finally, we made it transparent by giving out the reasons for recommendation with each track.

Inside the Machine

MusicGeek™ is built with IBM’s Watson technology, making it the first music platform to use cognitive computing. Watson “reads” blogs and biographies (at a rate of 800 million pages per second), building up an understanding of the music world based on expert opinion and the guidance of our content team.

When it comes to getting recommendations, MusicGeek™ opens a direct line to Watson, getting the benefit of its expert musical taste - it’s the equivalent of going to the record store and asking the skinny guy in the black T-shirt.

Building Watson into MusicGeek™ means a recommendation platform with a rounded personality: it combines the “hard” music facts that Quantone has built up a reputation for with the “soft” or subjective facts that only that someone in the know could dig up.

The result is a smart recommendation platform at your side, ready to introduce you to your next favourite track whenever you’re in the mood.

The input is made up of 6 tag types:

Artist Looks at similar artist based on influence, collaboration and social relationships.

Release Looks at tracks by similar artists based participations on the album.

Recording Looks for similar songs based on the artist and track participants.

Genre Narrows the playlist to the genre you’re interested in.

Location Finds tracks that were recorded in a specific place.

Decade Narrows the playlist to the decade of interest.

These inputs are chosen directly by your customer, or your application if you use MusicGeek™ ‘behind the scenes’.

The output includes all the basic track information you would expect, as well as some extra juicy metadata to give some context and satisfy the geeky urges. We also support external IDs for integration with your digital provider.

1. Choose one or two tags from our catalogue.

2. MusicGeek™ generates queries for Quantone database and Watson.

3. MusicGeek™ retrieves related factual metadata from the Quantone database.

4. Watson provides metadata enriched sections of text based on our curated editorial content.

5. The results are combined and weighed according to the query tags combination.

6. The best results are pooled for a playlist, ready for optimal ordering.

7. The final tracks are selected from the pool based on the best combination and order.

8. MusicGeek’s playlists are returned to the API,

together with the reasons for recommendation.

As well as the metadata, MusicGeek™ gives back the winning reason for why each track was recommended. This includes editorial material when we use it, with credit for the source and a link back to the original article.
