You may know Daven Treague as the high-energy, in-your-face, dance music DJ that calls Oklahoma City his home. Well Muve Mag caught up with Daven for an exclusive interview.

HERE WE GO!

You are no stranger to the world of DJing. Tell us how you got your start as a DJ.

Well I was 14, I remember going to a middle school dance, while all the other kids were well uncomfortably dancing 3ft away from each other l remember being completely intrigued by what was happening around me. The lights, sound, reactions, and interactions. I was completely clueless about what I needed to do become a dj. But I was determined. I’m lucky enough to have a family that supports my ideas and ventures quite often. So

for my birthday that year, my dad gave me a loan to get what I thought would help me to pursue my DJ dream. I’m embarrassed to say what gear I bought. The gear worked out well for me, because by that following year I paid

off the load from my dad. I saved $2,500 in 6 months, at the age of 15. That following year I landed two residencies. My first residency happened the be the only all ages club open at the time. Area 54. My second residency was

along side KJ at Frontie Cities’ Rhythm Pit. After I graduated high-school my taste in music changed dramatically. I went overseas to Amsterdam and Moscow for about a month. What I experienced there was amazing. I was introduced to

a new music. At that moment I knew exactly what I wanted to do as a DJ and how I wanted to do it.

The forms of which a DJ performs have changed dramatically over the years.

Controllers have become common place in the DJ arena. Can you tell us a bit about the controller that comprises your DJ rig?

Controller? You must mean controllers. My main controller

is a Traktor Kontrol S4 by Native Instruments. The S4 has absolutely no limitations in a live setting. I also utilize a MIDI Fighter Spectra by DJ Techtools. It’s an amazing controller. It has 16 “street fighter” buttons which are

customizable. I can control all four DJ decks on the Traktor Pro 2 software, utilize 64 loop programming along with one shots and midi map so that multiple effects can occur at the push of one button. My newly acquired F1 by Native

Instruments rounds out my rig. I use this controller as an extension of my Traktor Kontol S4. It features 4 faders, 4 four filter knobs and 16 color coded pads. With controllers aside, the heart and soul of my entire rig is the Traktor Pro

2 Software. I constantly learn new things about the software in regards to how it and how it handles music. I view my DJ rig as a creation tool to make music not to just play it.

You often produce tutorial videos that run the gamut of EDM focused production and performance. Walk us through your process of topic selection.

Page 15: Muve Magazine - Muve Mag August 2013 Issue

Well, lately the tutorials have been focused on Traktor. I intend to cover controllers and control vinyl, but I’m not quite there yet. My process for topic selection has been

calling to memory the moment I got my software. I’ve started my tutorial sessions with basic topics. Most of the tutorials have covered things that I would have loved to

Page 16: Muve Magazine - Muve Mag August 2013 Issue

know when I first started using Traktor. I like to educate people on how to utilize all the features of Traktor Pro 2. Traktor Pro 2 has unlimited capabilities. So much so, it needed it’s on Bible. The Traktor Bible has over 380 pages. It’s a great book. But I believe that it only skims the surface of the softwares capabilities. I started these tutorials in order to give my knowledge of the software and the controllers to anyone who has desires of improving professionally and musically.

You’ve recently begun producing your own original tunes. How do you approach a studio session and where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in a lot of things. I think that the kind of inspiration that I receive depends upon my mood and personal life. I also feel that I get a good chunk of my inspiration from the music that I perform with. I often get songs stuck in my head. The song will play in my head until it changes into an entirely

Page 17: Muve Magazine - Muve Mag August 2013 Issue

different song. At that moment it’s time to get that idea into Ableton before I forget it. After placing the tune into Ableton I create a basic 4/4 drum pattern. At that point I start throwing ideas into Ableton. Ableton and Traktor are very similar in how the operate. I DJ with Traktor so often that I constantly come up with new was to create music in Ableton. Once i get a track going its like a video game. It is the only thing I think about all day and i just want to constantly work on it. At times I get burned out while writing. So I usually step out of the studio to play XBOX or ride my motorcycle for a bit. With

each track that I finish I’ve noticed that my productivity is getting faster. If there are some producers out there that get discouraged with new production software, I’d like to say that everything that you need is at your fingertips. You just have to want to find it.

You also own and operate Adictiv Records. Can you tell us who currently resides on your label? Can we expect any new additions to the AdictiV Roster this year?

The current AdictiV roster consists of Jesse Strange, Michael Urish, Michael

Page 18: Muve Magazine - Muve Mag August 2013 Issue

Alexander (Woody), Lucy Motion and myself. We are expanding and are looking to add new people, new producers, new djs, new gogos etc. I’m looking for people that are driven by their passion for music. I’d like to think of AdictiV as more than just a label or crew. It’s like we are family. We constantly push each other to reach that next level. When the occasion arises to add a new member, we make the decision collectively.

Where can Muve Mag readers catch you live?

I currently have 3 residencies. On Tuesday nights I DJ at The Boom for EDM Tuesdays, Fridays at Frequency for Freq Fridays and Saturdays at Community for the AdictiV weekly. I feature all of my special events, club gigs and festivals on my Facebook page.

You have a long standing podcast fittingly titled EDM Nightlife. What is the process of creating you monthly endeavor from inception to creation then implementation? Also what do you intend for your listeners

Page 19: Muve Magazine - Muve Mag August 2013 Issue

to take away from your mix sessions?

EDM Nightlife evolved from Daven Treague’s Weekly Live Mix Podcast. I wanted to lighten the frequency that the podcast were coming out so that I can free up time to produce music. Now that the podcast are made weeks apart I have more time to make tutorials as well. EDM Nightlife is about what you experience when you listen to music. In the next few months i

will be including some new features into my podcast. With each podcast I will include song titles and download links to every track I used in the podcast with time markers of when the track was mixed in and out. I will also be taking on guest mixes from regional and local djs and doing small interviews from them as well. I want this podcast to be more than just music. I want it to be about the experience. _____________________________

You just found out that you have 48 Hours to Live. What’s your first thought?

Did i leave the house wearing fresh undies and socks? I would hate to disappoint my mom and grandma by dying wearing dirty draws =]

How do you want to go?

Hopefully painlessly, and not begging for my life. And maybe some explosions and lazers could go off in the background. Maybe release some doves?

Do you have any deathbed confessions?

I saved a lot of money on my car insurance after switching to Geico? Hmmmm, I wish I would have cared less about what other people think of me. What a waste of time and energy.

What’s your last meal?

Cajun King

Who delivers your Eulogy?

Probably my girlfriend Roxie,

or my BF Sarah.

What are people saying over your casket?

PLEASE don’t bury me in the ground. I want to be cremated and scattered around the world. But if i had to guess what people would say at my funeral, it’d probably be like “Remember how crazy this bitch was? Remember that time she...” and then laughter shortly after. I want people to remember the fun times.

What Band is playing your funeral and why?

Not so much a band but Pete Rock & CL Smooth - They

Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y) Not only is this my all time favorite hip-hop track, it truly gives me goosebumps EVERY single time i play/hear it. It speaks to so many people who go thru the loss of a friend, or family member, as they reminisce over you. Its a healing sort of song in my opinion

What does your tombstone header say?

“Jesus called, and she answered”.. jk, i have no idea, i would hope between my friends and family, they’d come up with a good one.____________________________
