The CGMCOSMOS system is composed of a set of reducedsize modular cubicles, single or multifunctional, for differentsecondary power distribution configurations up to 24 kV inboth public and industrial settings.

Extensive experience with the CGM-CGC system, as wellas the application of innovative technologies along with newmaterials and compliance with the IEC standards, hasallowed the development of the CGMCOSMOS system,providing improvements in functional aspects such as greatercompactness, ergonomics in equipment installation andoperation, a wide range of functions and greater reliabilityand safety.

CGMCOSMOS System

Full SF6 gas-insulation, providing protection against harshenvironmental elements (including flooding), long servicelife and maintenance-free of live parts.

Full modularity and future extendibility in both sides usingthe ORMALINK connecting set.

Internal arcs withstand for personal protection, in accordancewith IEC 60298.

Small dimensions and low weights for easier handling andinstallation.

Simple and safe operation, ergonomic operation elements,possibility of mounting auxiliary components under voltage,fuses in horizontal position, additional interlocks and acousticalarm for inappropriate operations.

Easy cable connections with plug-in or screwed type terminalsand no need for a cable trench or the placement of additionalon-site frames.

General service conditions based on IEC 60694 standard.For other values, please contact our Technical-Commercialdepartment.

The different modules are electrically connected by meansof the ORMALINK connecting set (patented in 1991 byOrmazabal), allowing a high number of combinations tocover all operation and protection needs in Transformersubstations.

Both the breaking and switching components as well as thebusbar are located inside a stainless steel, SF6-filled gastank which is permanently sealed, thus building a fullyinsulated unit (IP 67 - IEC 60529).

The metal enclosure of each cubicle, made of galvanisedsteel plate, is sturdy enough to prevent deformation andensure protection under the expected operating conditions.

The CGMCOSMOS units have a front cover, properlyinterlocked to provide safe, convenient access to the cableterminals and fuse holders (horizontal arrangement).Optionally, bushings are also available on the sides for theincoming cable feeders.

The units are equipped with the ekorVPIS, which continuallyindicates voltage presence in the equipment. Optionally, itis available an ekorSAS acoustic alarm which emits anaudible signal whenever an attempt of an earthingdisconnector operation could produce a fault in the network.

The CGMCOSMOS system meets the requirements of thefollowing standards:

IEC 60298Metal-enclosed switchgear for alternating current ratedvoltages over 1 kV and under 52 kV.

The CGMCOSMOS system has been designed and testedto withstand an internal arc in accordance with AppendixAA.

IEC 60265High voltage switches. Part 1: High voltage switches forrated voltages over 1 kV and under 52 kV.

IEC 60129Alternating current disconnectors and earthing disconnectors.

IEC 62271-105Alternating current switch-fuse combinations.

IEC 60694Common specifications for high-voltage switchgear andcontrolgear standards.

IEC 62271-100High-voltage alternating-current circuit-breakers.

The CGMCOSMOS system meets the immersion test at apressure of 3 metres water column, 24 hours at rated voltageand isolation tests at power frequency.

The CGMCOSMOS system has a series of interlocks toensure safe, reliable service, in accordance with therequirements of the IEC 60298 standard.

Based on the design and the inclusion of additional interlocks,the switch-disconnector and the earthing disconnector cannotbe closed simultaneously.

An interlock operated by the earthing disconnector preventsthe access cover to the MV cable terminals from opening,thereby preventing unsafe operations.

In addition, the access to the fuse holders in the protectionfunctional units is also secured with the same interlock.Switching operations with these units cannot be performedunless the cable compartments are properly closed.

The CGMCOSMOS cubicles allow switching to be disabledby padlocks (up to three) for both the switch-disconnectorand the earthing disconnector.

Optionally, switching defeating devices with locks are availablefor any of the operations.

INTERLOCKSOPERATING SAFETY

ORMALINK

The various modules of the CGMCOSMOS system areelectrically connected by the ORMALINK connecting set,patented in 1991 by Ormazabal.In terms of construction, the extendible cubicles have lateralfemale bushings that allow their main busbars to be connectedby means of this assembly, allowing current to flow whilealso controlling the electric field by means of the respectiveelastomer insulation layers, which are free of partialdischarges.

Nevertheless, until new modules are installed in thetransformer substation, the extendible cubicles are providedwith sealing plugs for the lateral female bushings, whichneed to be removed for connection.

Due to the design of the ORMALINK connecting set, anequipotential area is created inside which houses a seriesof contacts arranged in an circle to connect the standardbushings.

This achieves highly reliable and resistant electric continuityeven resistant to short-circuit currents. Other importantaspects are the ease of installation (even in transformersubstations with uneven floors) and the capacity to maintain

The ekorVPIS, a self-powered indicator integrated in thecubicles, indicates the presence of voltage in the phases bymeans of three permanent indicator lights and has beendesigned to meet IEC 61958.Readily accessible test points are provided for testing thephase coincidence.The ekorSPC phase comparator can be supplied as anoption.

EKORVPIS VOLTAGEPRESENCE INDICATOR

The ekorSAS, acoustic alarm to prevent earthing, is a self-powered audible indicator that works along with the ekorVPISvoltage presence indicator.The device is activated when an attempt is made to operatethe earthing shaft under power cable voltage, thereby alertingthe operator of the attempt to perform an improper switchingoperation.This provides greater safety for goods and services duringnetwork operation, preventing no-voltage conditions in thenetwork and improving power quality.

EKORSASACOUSTIC ALARM

MV network short-circuit protection is provided by fusesinstalled in the cubicles.

The fuse holder tubes are installed horizontally (for uniformtemperature over the entire length) in the gas enclosure,and are fully leak-proof (in the closed position), ensuringtightness against flooding and external pollution.

In accordance with IEC 60420, the switch-fuse relationshipmay be "associated" or "combined", with the tripping of anyfuse indicated in the latter case on the synoptic of the cubicle.The switch-fuse assembly was heat tested under normaloperating conditions as per IEC 60694.

PROTECTION FUNCTIONS

WITH FUSESAND EKORRPT PROTECTION,

MEASURING AND CONTROL

The option of including the ekorRPT unit also providesprotection against overcurrents and earth faults, therebyincreasing facility protection in a more reliable manner andmaking it completely selective with other protection devices,whether phase or earth.

The ekorRPT unit was specifically developed for applicationto the fused-protection functional unit of the CGMCOSMOSsystem. The unit consists of an electronic relay withcommunication capabilities, as well as current sensors,bistable tripping unit and, depending on the model, self-powered toroidal current transformers, if powered directlyfrom the medium-voltage current and not by external powersupplies. Moreover, the unit comes completely factory-installed and tested.

When an overcurrent within the admissible values for theswitch under load conditoins, the relay acts on the bistabletripping unit, causing the circuit to open. If the values arehigher, the relay will not act, with the protection functionassumed by the fuses. If the unit trips, then the fault current,reason, duration, date and time are recorded in memory.When the earth fault current is less than 10% of the phasecurrent rating, ultrasensitive protection should be used.

The current is measured with sensors having a hightransformer ratio, which allows a broad range of powerratings to be protected using the same unit. This has apotential-free input associated with the transformertemperature thermostat to provide protection againstoverheating.

For the adjustment and monitoring of parameters using apersonal computer, please refer to the section on ekorSOFT.

The ekorRPT unit is self-powered from 5 A (150 kVA at20 kV), and is fully autonomous with no need for batteriesor any other type of outside power source. For rated currentsbelow 5 A, auxiliary power units are also available.

The unit is used to protect distribution equipment between50 and 2000 kVA. High-value polyphase short-circuits arecleared by fuses.

For automated/remote controled facilities, some ekorRPTmodels come with integrated control function.

CGMCOSMOS System

This functional unit equipped with a vacuum circuit breakerprovides for making and breaking capacity, even under faultconditions (overcurrent and short circuit) in the general MVnetwork.

The protection functions are carried out exclusively by theekorRPG unit, which has been specifically developed foruse with the CGMCOSMOS-V circuit breaker function. Thisunit consists of an electronic relay with communicationcapabilities, as well as current sensors and, depending onthe model, power sypply card and/or self-powered toroidalmeasuring transformers, if not powered by external powersupplies. Moreover, it comes completely factory-installedand tested.

This unit acts when there are overcurrents, eatrh faults,phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth short circuits. When anovercurrent is detected, the relay acts on the low-powerbistable tripping unit that operates the circuit breaker, causingthe circuit to open. • Data loggingThe last few trips are stored in a log with a date-timestamp, the total number of switching operations, and thevarious settings and configuration parameters of thesystem. The local, menu-driven interface providesinstantaneous values of the current measurement for eachphase and for zero-sequence current, as well as thereasons for tripping.

• CommunicabilityThe RS-232 port on the front of the relay allowscommunication to computer devices, allowing theconfiguration and/or setting from the ekorSOFT softwareas well as event logging.The RS-485 port can be used for remote control functions.

CGMCOSMOS System

These sensors are toroidal current transformers with atransformer ratio of 300/1 A or 1000/1 A. The sensors aretypically factory-installed and tested in the standard bushingof the cubicles, which greatly simplifies field assembly andconnection. The inner diameter of the toroidal currenttransformers allows cables with a cross-section of up to 400mm2 to be used without any difficulty, and subsequentmaintenance testing is trouble-free.

The main advantages of using these sensors with theCGMCOSMOS system are as follows:

• Greater reliability. Signal pick-up is more accurate dueto high transformer ratios.

• Greater safety. Active parts exposed to the air are nolonger used, ensuring greater personal safety.

• Smaller volume. The design dimensions allow theequipment to be installed even in the standard bushingof the cubicle.

• Broad range. These units do not need to be replacedwith others having a higher transformer ratio whenupgrading the facility power rating.

• Easy maintenance. The equipment can remain in serviceduring the tests.

A zero-sequence transformer (If ≤10% Ir) is available forultrasensitive detection of the earth current.

MEASURING SENSORS

The units provide the power necessary to supply the ekorRPunits, using a single-phase current above 5 A (150 kVA at20 kV) in the medium-voltage network.

SELF-POWER TOROIDAL-TYPETRANSFORMERS

Self-poweredConverts the signal of the toroidal-type transformers to directcurrent, powering the relay.

With auxiliary power inputEquipped with a 230 VAC input with a 10 kV insulation level,for direct connection of the card to the substation´s LV board.Optionally, models for 24 to 125 VDC power supply areavailable.

Regardless of the type of power supply, the card also includesa protection trip test circuit, as well as the connectorsnecessary for functional testing using current injection duringmaintenance and check-up operations.

POWER SUPPLY CARD

The bistable tripping unit is an electromechanical actuatorbuilt into the switching mechanism of the MV cubicle. Itrequires only a low operating energy for tripping.

EKORSYS FAMILY

The ekorCCP is a programmable cubicle controller designedto be used for control applications (local or remote), switchingand signalling in medium-voltage substations which requireautomation functions, such as feeder transfer, load shedding,reclosures, electrical interlocks between cubicles, alarmcentralization, etc.

The versatility of this equipment allows applications wherethe unit is used alone (e.g., as a local control component)in addition to applications where the unit must work withother controllers over a communications network.

It has a modular structure with two fixed modules (CPU andpower) and four for expansion, allowing the equipment tobe flexibly adapted to the specific needs of each facility.

The equipment is compatible with various communicationstechnologies (radio, fibre optics, GSM, etc.) through itschannels and allows both existing and future protocols tobe used.

CGMCOSMOS System

ekorSOFT

The ekorSOFT software is a help tool used to set and monitorthe parameters of the protection, metering, signalling andcontrol units of ekorSYS family.

It has three main operating modes:

• Display: Indicates the status of the entire facility,for  instance, the electrical measurements,date and time, protection and detection settings,etc.

• Settings: Makes it easier to enter or change the operational settings.

• History logs: Shows the data of the last events, as wellas the total operations carried out by the unit.

Minimum requirements: Pentium II computer, 32 MB of RAM,MS Windows 95 operating system or higher, and RS-232port of communications. The installation of this software fromthe CD-ROM requires 3 MB free space on the hard disk.

Computer application for remote control and operation oftransformer substations from a SCADA-based control station.

This system provides the dispatching capability for powerdistribution, and offers the following features:

The operating mechanisms of the CGMCOSMOS systemare manufactured by means of reliable new technologies,using highly corrosion-resistant materials. Their encapsulatedauxiliary circuits increase the degree of protection and isolation,thereby preventing the effects of dust and ambient humidity.

Depending on the operating mechanism (three-positiondisconnector or circuit breaker), several operating mechanismsare available:

• B (manual)• BM (motor drive)• BR (manual with holding element, for the fused-protection

functional unit)• RAV (manual for the circuit breaker)• RAMV (motor drive for the circuit breaker)

The mechanical endurance of the operating mechanisms forthe three-position disconnector is class M1 for manualmechanisms and class M2 for motor-driven mechanisms(IEC 60265 -IEC 60129). Moreover, they can be readily replaced whilestill under voltage in any of the three positions (closed-open-earthed).

In compliance with IEC 60129, the indication of the positionof the switch-disconnector and the earthing disconnector isperformed safely (kinematic chain test).

Connectors

Both for direct connection to the bushings located in the cablecompartment and for those located on the side, appropriateplug-in or screw-mounted connectors should be used (whenthe rated current is over 400 A or the short circuit current is16 kA or higher).

In the outgoing transformer feeders (cable compartment) ofthe fuse-protected functional units, 250 A plug-in connectorsshould be used. The connectors may be straight, or elbowconnectors when rear cable output is required.Shielded connectors should be used in protection cubiclesequipped with circuit breakers.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: ISO 14001

The Ormazabal production plants have implemented thecorresponding environmental management systems, whichcomply with the requirements of the international ISO 14001standard and have been endorsed by, among others, theAENOR Environmental Management CGM-00/38 Certificate.

The cubicles of the CGMCOSMOS system have been designedand manufactured according to the requirements of theinternational IEC 622751-200 standard.

In terms of construction and depending on the model, thecubicles have a sealed SF6 compartment, which because ofits design permits the total functioning of the equipmentthroughout the whole of its working life, which is estimated asbeing 30 years (Appendix GG of IEC 62271-200).

At the end of the product life cycle, the SF6 gas must not bereleased into the atmosphere, but recovered and treated forit to be reused, according to the instructions found in the IEC61634, IEC 60480 standards and the CIGRE 117 guide.

Ormazabal, will provide any additional information that maybe required to carry out this task correctly, both for personaland environmental safety.
