    Concerns of Competitive Intelligence (CI)

    Who are the players?

What is their strength and weakness? Are they becoming stronger or weaker in a

    specific market sector?

What are their intentions or their prospects?

    What is our market niche?

What is our short/long term development goal?

What are the strategy, the resources and the

steps needed to achieve this goal?

Global Market Competition Trend Innovation is the core sustainable competitive

advantage (SCA) in the global market

Innovation leads to intellectual property right

    (IPR)

    Buy-America policy and trade protectionism

IPR barrier is a perfect market protection [1]

Free trade agreement (FTA) under the WTOscheme

IPR owners can extend their IPR market

barriers across the border under FTA

    Patent Mapping and IPR

Patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret

are the four kinds of IPR Patent is an index for the achievements in

    innovation investment

Patent is a market shield to prevent competitorsfrom entering a specific market

Searching and analyzing patent database toprovide CI from the patent point of view forstrategic development planning [2]

US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)and Its Patent Database

U.S. is a major patent market in the world

USPTO patent database is the largest

    patent database in the world

It is updated weekly Canadas exports of goods and services to

the U.S. are equivalent to 1/4 of the gross

    domestic product (GDP) in 2008(http://www.international.gc.ca/commerce/

    assets/pdfs/r1-en.pdf )

Our CI database Synchronized with USPTO patent database to

    provide up-to-date information about Canadas

    competitive advantage

Included patent statistics of 2581 Canadiancompanies/organizations having US patents

    granted since 2004

Provided synergies and intelligence in strategicplanning for economic development, immigration, new immigrant employment and human resource

    Ideal Employers for Highly EducatedImmigrants

The value of highly educated immigrants is their

knowledge, experience and the ability to innovate The employers who have strong interests in

innovation and IPR will be more likely to hire people

to innovate with their head instead of working withtheir hands only

    People want a stable job

Only employers with IPR, and thus SCA, cansurvive in the global market and offer stable jobs

    Overall Picture

Ontario is the largest patent hosting province (52% ofthe new patents issued to Canadian entities in 2009)

Montreal is the largest patent hosting city in Canada Halifax, Fredericton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary

and Vancouver are the largest innovation hubs to NovaScotia (NS), New Brunswick (NB), Manitoba,Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia (BC)respectively in 2009

Research in Motion (RIM) keeps continuous growth in

patents for the last 10 years RIM alone contributes over half of the Ontario patent

    growth from 2008 to 2009

Aspects of GTA potential 21 employers

GTA includes City of Toronto, Region of Durham,Halton, Peel and York, unless specified otherwise

The potential 21 employers are ranked by the numberof US patents they hold

Entities in GTA hold 3365 US patents issued within2004-2009, while the potential 21 employers hold 45%of them (1520 out of 3365)

The potential 21 employers 1520 US patents distributein 9 sectors roughly, as in Figure 4

From the annual statistics, IT seems the only sectorthat will grow continuously this year in US patentholding, as in Figure 5

Conclusion Patent mapping analysis can disclose the

real-time economic strength of an entity,

such as a company, a city or a country At the present stage, we have identified the

major Canadian players and their strength in

    the global market

Our information is synchronized with USPTO

patent database to provide the latestnationwide competitive intelligence weekly

Our work can provide reference baseline for

    further sophisticated market surveys

Remarks Solely ranking a company by the number of

granted patents may not be enough

The name list may not be thorough Further investigation of the quality of the

patents will be needed to disclose the real

niches and opportunities In addition to patent, there are IPR of

    copyright, trademark and trade secret

More sophisticated research efforts will beneeded to nurture new IPR
