Creating new “Pathways to Prosperity”for Maine high school studentsAUGUSTA, ME – Of Maine’s12,000 public high school studentswho receive their diplomas thismonth, 61 percent are expected toenroll in college. Yet, by the time theyreach their mid-twenties, barely 38percent will have earned a collegedegree.

In February 2011 the Pathways toProsperity Project at the HarvardGraduate School of Education(HGSE) released a report challengingour country’s excessive focus on theidea that a four-year degree is theonly pathway to success in theworkforce. The report argues that weneed to create additional pathwaysthat combine rigorous academicswith strong technical education toequip the majority of young peoplewith the skills and credentials tosucceed in our increasinglychallenging labor market. Pathwaysto Prosperity: Meeting the Challengeof Preparing Young Americans for the21st Century hit a nerve amongemployers, educators, and stateofficials struggling with highunemployment rates, perceived skills

mismatches, and the devastatingeffect of the financial crisis on youngpeople.

The enormous interest generated bythe Pathways report has led to thelaunch of the Pathways to ProsperityNetwork, a collaboration betweenHGSE, Jobs for the Future (JFF) andseven states—including Maine. Thisnetwork is committed to ensuring thatmany more young people completehigh school, attain a valuablepostsecondary credential, and begina career while leaving open theprospect of further education.

Maine Governor Paul LePage said,“In shaping a responsive workforcedevelopment system, I remainconvinced that well-defined careerpathways for all young people areessential to building a qualifiedworkforce for all Maine industries.”

To accomplish this goal in Maine,Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG)will lead a coalition of key public andprivate sector leaders, includingemployers and educators, who arecommitted to building a variety ofcareer pathways that will link high

school students to successful careers.

Craig Larrabee, President& CEO ofJMG said, “There is no single entity –not the public school system, nor thebusiness community that can do thiswork alone. By combining theresources of everyone who has astake in the future of Maine’s studentsand Maine’s economy, we can ensurethat our young people are preparedto meet the demands of today’s jobmarket.”

The work will initially focus on themanufacturing labor market in Maine, however, the long-term goal is tocreate a statewide system of careerpathways that can serve a majority ofstudents. After years of decline, jobsin the manufacturing industry in Maineare on the rise. Lisa Martin, ExecutiveDirector of the ManufacturersAssociation of Maine, says, “We arethrilled to be partnering with such agreat program as JMG! The Pathwaysto Prosperity program will increaseour outreach to young people foropportunities in manufacturing andwill assist in our efforts to market andplace students in great careers.”

Other states that have joined thePathways to Prosperity Network areIllinois, Massachusetts, Missouri,North Carolina and Tennessee. ThePathways to Prosperity frameworkincludes the following elements of apathways system:

• Employers committed to providinglearning opportunities in theworkplace and supporting thetransition of young people into thelabor market.

• Career pathways with clearstructures, timelines, costs, andrequirements linking and integratinghigh school and community collegecurriculum and aligning both withlabor market needs.

• An early and sustained careerinformation and advising system

strong enough to enable students andfamilies to make informed choicesabout educational career paths.

• Local or regional intermediaryorganizations to provide theinfrastructure and support for thedevelopment of such pathways.

John Dorrer, former ActingCommissioner of the MaineDepartment of Labor, is now aprogram director at Jobs for the

Future. Dorrer said, “It is long pasttime that we broaden the range ofhigh quality pathways that we offer to

our young people, beginning in highschool. The lessons from othercountries strongly suggest that thismight be the single most promisingstrategy for greatly increasing thepercentage of young adults who earna post-secondary degree orcredential that prepares them toembark on a meaningful career.”

...the long-term goal isto create a statewidesystem of careerpathways that can servea majority of students.

Worrying is Not DoingAre you worrying about something you need to do? If you are worrying

about something, a project or something you need to take care of at home,

itʼs a good idea to keep in mind that merely worrying about something is not

doing something. It may sound idiotic, but reminding yourself of this

occasionally can help you work through procrastination and avoidance

when it comes to dealing with things youʼd rather just go away.

For instance, many first time job hunters make this mistake when they

graduate from college and are trying to enter the work world. They sit

around and fret about how hard it is to get a job, and they keep the focus

on the disconcerting fact that they do not know how to find a job. The truth

is of course that no one really knows how to get a job until after theyʼve

done it once or twice. New job seekers often allow themselves to feel that

by worrying, they are actually looking for a job. What theyʼre really doing is

thinking about looking for the job. And they are wearing themselves out by

participating in this very draining mental game.

The next time you find yourself worrying

instead of doing, try writing down what you

have done toward resolving your problem

or attaining your goal. In the case of job

hunters, they might see that they really

havenʼt been sending out too many

résumés or making very many phone

calls. In the same way, you can evaluate

whether you are really making

action-based efforts to achieve what

needs to be done. If you find that

instead youʼve been doing a lot of

thinking and worrying about what

you need to do, just accept it,

and promise yourself to

take at least one step

every day toward your

goal. And write it

down, so you can see

for yourself what you

have done, and

other steps you

might try.

Value in Your Brand

One of the core elements in developing your brandis in the value you offer. Too many job seekers andresume writers focus on things like years ofexperience, education or certifications, and softskills. The problem is that there is little that's uniqueabout any of these things. For example, manycandidates have 10-plus years of experience, aBachelor's degree, and are dedicated andhard-working. No, those things are nice, but notalways valuable to an employer.

Defining Value

So how do you determine your value? Start bythinking about the things you have done that othersweren't able to do. Consider the followingexamples:

• As a developer, you may have been able tosolve a software defect that had been plaguing anenterprise application for years.

• As a project manager, you were brought in totake over failing projects and consistently got theteam in order to meet the scope, milestones, anddeliverables of the project.

• As a CIO, you were able to put together a newIT organizational model that helped to dramaticallyimprove service delivery with a reduced coststructure.

The Value Proposition

All these things create value. In addition, they canall be used as a foundation for creating a strongvalue proposition. The developer can highlight theirability to solve intractable problems impactingglobal operations. The project manager can brandthemselves as a project turnaround specialist. TheCIO can position themselves as a changemanagement and business transformation leader.

Many candidates worry about being pigeon-holed

in the job search when they brand themselves, specifically in this manner. The concern is that itlimits their opportunities. Actually, what it reallydoes is create a focused image of who they areand what they truly offer. It makes them somethingother than a commodity, which is important.Remember, commodity prices are set by the marketdemand and all are priced at the same levelbecause all the products are the same. Thisapproach tells the company that you're not thesame at all. You're unique. You're valuable. Youcan command a higher compensation becauseyou're worth it.

Personal Brandand the Resume

Determining YourValue PropositionBy Stephen Van Vreede

Resume DifferentiationIn today's competitive job market, it's essential to distinguish yourselffrom all the other candidates out there, whether they are strong orweak, you've got to stand out from the pack. One of the most effectivestrategies for differentiating yourself is in crafting a personal brandmessage.

Personal Brand MessageYour personal brand simply communicates what makes you special toa prospective employer. The brand statement needs to be clear andconcise. Your audience should be able to read it in 5 seconds or less. This will help them to understand it and retain it.
