Ready for the

job search?Take this quiz!By Lea McLeod

RecentGrads:

Maybe you are one of those who got off campuswithout fully leveraging the career center, careeradvisors or connecting to all your professors onLinkedIn. It's ok, you'll just need to create a differentprocess than you would have on campus.Recently a grad came to me and was all jazzedabout getting into the job search game now that hewas out of university. He was all over job boards, and sending out letters on a pretty random basis, and using one basic resume for all his job searches. There didn't seem to be a lot of direction, focus orforethought to his process. I thought, wow, if allgrads are doing it this way, small wonder there's anunemployment problem! And, if you are working that way, it's no wonderyou might feel frustrated, hopeless and thinkingabout plan B.

To stand out in your job search, you must make sureyou've set your self up for success before you eversend out a resume, submit an application, orschedule an interview! Now that you're out of school, you don't have thecommunity and camaraderie of the campus fromwhich to draw strength for the job searchconversation. So, you'll have to create thatmomentum on your own. You can also join (or start)a job search group that might be helpful. In any event, before you go running off andapplying to jobs every which way but loose, do aquick inventory and see if you have all the tools youneed for your job search in place.Take this quick checkup to see if you are ready to hitthe bricks. Answer yes or no to the followingstatements:

Staying positive can be hard in today's world, buthere's one small way to work a little positivity in yourdaily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nicethought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positivethought into your conversation. It's a small way ofmaking the world just a little nicer, and it just takes aminute to plan and a short time to deliver.

Show, don't tell for resume success By Jack Mulcahy

"Show, don't tell" is one of thepillars of good writing, andnowhere is it more important than inthe world of resume writing. Theaverage resume I receive willinclude a Skills section that readssomething like this:

"Able to use MS Office Suite on aday-to-day basis. Basic ITknowledge to help others withproblems with their PCs. Proficientin PowerPoint presentations andgraphing information. I am anorganized team player with anability to learn quickly and awillingness to accept responsibility. Iam a dependable person, whoworks well independently. I possessthe ability to multi-task and handledhigh levels of confidentiality."

To the untrained eye, this mightseem to be exactly what anemployer wants to see. After all,who wouldn't want to hire someonewith these skills as an administrativeassistant? The problem is thatemployers see resumes like this dayin and day out. So who wants tolook just like everyone else? Themost important element of yourresume is one called your UniqueSelling Proposition, or USP. That'sthe quality about you that makesyou stand out from everyone else.

Telling the employer how muchyou're like everyone else won'testablish you in the employer's eyesas anything except a cookie-cutterimitation.

There's a bigger issue at stakehere, however, and that is that whenthe employer reads something likethis, s/he probably thinks,"Where's your proof?" That's right, when you simply tell rather thanshow what you can do, you've donenothing more than make anunsubstantiated claim. Anybodycan claim they can use MS OfficeSuite or make PowerPointpresentations. There's nothingspecial about that.

What if, instead of saying"Proficient in PowerPointpresentations," this job seeker said,"Created customizable PowerPointpresentations for client marketingthat reduced presentation buildingtime approximately 75%"? Now theemployer has a realaccomplishment s/he can visualize, with a genuine result. This persondidn't just use PowerPoint, they usedit to the company's advantage.

Let's look at the second half of thejob seeker's claim: "... andgraphing information." That canbecome, "Built charts and graphs

using MS Excel that supplementedsales forecasting and reportingsystems and reduced unnecessaryand time-consuming steps inprocesses." There's another genuineaccomplishment with a result.

How about another claim by thisjob seeker? "Able to use MS OfficeSuite on a day-to-day basis." Whynot tell them what you did with MS

Office Suite? "Composed proposalsutilizing eye-catching graphics thatpresented information clearly andwon approximately 80% of bids."

Show them, don't tell them to builda successful resume. Employersdon't buy skills and duties; they buyaccomplishments.
