Quick Overview Barnes & Noble originated in 1873 when

Charles Barnes opened a book-printingbusiness in Wheaton, Illinois. Their firsttrue bookstore was set up by his son,William, in partnership with G. CliffordNoble, in 1917 in New York City. Thebusiness was purchased in 1971 byLeonard Riggio, Leonard Riggio, thecompany's chairman, began hisbookselling career while attending New

York University in the early1960s. Working as a clerk in theuniversity bookstore, he became

convinced that he could do a better jobserving students, and he opened a

PublishingBarnes & Noble publishes some of the books it sells,inexpensively reprinting non-copyrighted titles oracquiring the U.S. or English language rights fromanother publisher. when they started reissuing out-of-print titles.The first store to feature a caf serving Starbucksbeverages was in Springfield, New Jersey in 1993.In 2004, Barnes & Noble began offering Wi-Fi in thecaf area of selected stores, using the AT&T
