Solution Detail

Scenario: Upon arrival at Narayan, you notice a set of cloth banners which display both symbols and phrases for each hanging on the wall. The first set appear to have been ripped-down off of their hangers, which may leave you to believe that you will not ever find them, but in reality, this also may lead you to think that they could be found elsewhere, perhaps in another location. When you go upstairs, you meet up with Saavedro who has the book of Releeshahn in his left hand and a wooden and stone hammer in his right. He throws a little temper tantrum because he was expecting to see Atrus arrive there and not you! (Remember, all of his dialogs have been addressed to Atrus throughout the game thus far). Once he gets over the fact that you have been sent in his place, he divulges that he (and now you) are trapped in this "cage" and cannot escape because of some sort of "shield" that Atrus has installed there. He has spent "weeks" trying to figure it out, but has been unsuccessful at it. He also adds that if you can find a way out of here, that you should be forewarned that doors that are opened remain open behind you, and waves his stone hammer at you in a threatening manner. He then retires to his little tower and leaves you to figure it out. What Saavedro doesn't know is that you have Atrus's Journal which holds the answer to this puzzle. We are not sure if Saavedro has opened the book of Releeshahn in search for a clue, or whether he has just been holding onto it as bait to draw Atrus out of hiding to J'nanin to follow after him. Solution: You are now on the top level of the structure and Saavedro has left you alone. Looking down, you notice a lever which turns on the generator behind you. Switch that on (you will hear power being generated) and return downstairs. Look at the banners and draw the symbols for each word that is used in these phrases. Some will be missing from these banners, but are actually located in another room below this one. The doorway down to that room is now blocked by the shield that Atrus has installed. Besides the first set of missing banners, there are five other sets of two banners in each set, each with three symbols on them. They are:

Four statements are listed in bold type Atrus's Journal. They are (in order of appearance): 1. "ENERGY POWERS FUTURE MOTION" 2. "NATURE ENCOURAGES MUTUAL DEPENDENCE" 3. "DYNAMIC FORCES SPUR CHANGE" and 4. "BALANCED SYSTEMS STIMULATE CIVILIZATIONS" You will use the symbols that go with the words with an (*) in front of them. The letters in "( )" are not on the actual banner, but in the phrases in the journal. Basically, all of the words you need are on the upper room banners, with the exception of: "BALANCED", "SYSTEMS" and "STIMULATE" which are downstairs. Once you have drawn out the symbols from the upper room banners (and now that the power has been turned on), you will notice two input modules with a control lever between them. It is important to note the position of this lever (which not only directs power to each input module, but also controls the "inner" and "outer" shields that Atrus has installed); and also how it is moved both by you and by Saavedro throughout the endgame. When you enter Narayan, the lever is pointing to the right module, however, you will have to move this lever to point to the left module which is the first inputting device. As you solve this puzzle, you will notice that pointing the lever to the right closes the inner door and leaves the outer world open. Pointing the lever to the left opens the inner door, but closes the outer world. Make a note of that. Completing the Solution: 1) Entering Narayan, lever is to the left. 2) Go upstairs and turn on the power lever (Saavedro comes out and gives you his speech

before you do. 3) Go downstairs and turn the control lever to the left to activate the left input module. (The right

module can be opened, but there is no power supplied to its grid until you complete the left one first).

4) Input the symbols by selecting each circuit according to the diagrams from the banners. The grid on this module consists of three major circuit boards, each with four sub-circuits. Start with the top circuit board and work clockwise within each, and then clockwise around the

grid. (See detail below). As each circuit board is completed, it lights-up bright white and you hear the current flowing through each. When you complete the three sets of four sub-circuits, the inner gate will open and you can go downstairs to the lower room (lever is still pointing to the left module) and find the other remaining symbols. You already have "CIVILIZATIONS" from upstairs.

5) Come back upstairs and turn the lever to the right (the inner door closes) and solve the last phrase on the right input module. That opens the outer world and Saavedro comes down and talks to you. He now realizes that you have solved the shield problem, but now he needs you to help him get back to his family, who may be still alive within Narayan. So he demands that you turn the lever once he has passed the inner door in order to escape. But, remember, he still has the Releeshahn book! If you free him, he will toss the book away and leave you "empty-handed". Instead, you must force another mutual agreement:

6) Instead of turning the lever to the right as Saavedro commands you to do, go upstairs and turn off the power. The inner door will close and the outer world is still sealed-off from him (lever is still pointing to the left). Saavedro now realizes that he is trapped and that his plan for revenge has failed. (He throws another delightful temper tantrum)!

7) Go downstairs and "barter" with Saavedro. He will offer you the book and beg for mercy. However, do not turn on the power yet. If you do, (since the lever is still pointing to the left) the inner door will open and Saavedro will come upstairs and hit you on the head with his hammer. Instead, turn the lever to the right. This will open the outer gate once the power switch is turned back on again, and will free Saavedro to return to his world by means of the gondola, but at the same time, keep him from attacking you. Go up and turn on the power and free him. He bids you farewell and takes the gondola to where his family is located.

8) Go downstairs and turn the lever to the left to allow you to go downstairs to the lower room and return to Tomahna. Take the Tomahna book and link back to the terrace. Catherine will come out, followed by Atrus with the burnt linking book he had to follow after you. He will ask you for the book of Releeshahn and Catherine has the key to open it. When he sees that the book is safe and sound, they will thank you and ask you to tell them all about your travels and discoveries. Thus ends the game!
