PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVES Welcome to all parents and students to the final week of Term 2. Thank you and congratulations to all staff, students and parents involved in our NAIDOC celebrations last Friday, 24th June. Our students rotated through a variety of activities that all contributed to our knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture. The highlight being our guest speaker Sean Choolburra who fully engaged students during the whole performance. Students will remember aspects of Aboriginal culture because it was presented in a meaningful way, with variety and humour. Thank you to Mrs Nadine Matarazzo for coordinating the successful day. A big congratulations and well done to our U16 and Open Girls Netball teams who went through undefeated in the recent Riverina section of the State Central Schools Netball tournament. The girls dominated the Leeton Carnival by competing hard, displaying terrific sportsmanship and demonstrating amazing teamwork. Both teams will travel to Dubbo next term to play in the Central Schools State Netball Finals. Our U16’s team are the current state champions and are extra excited about the prospect of defending their title. Thank you to Alison Linnet and Lisa Joliffe for coordinating and coaching our school netball teams. On Sunday, 26th June our school supported the Friends of the Southern Cross fundraising event which showcased our student’s art works and live music talents. Thank you to Dianne and Iain at Lake Paika for allowing our students to draw on the Lake Paika scenery for inspiration. The student’s artworks rose just short of $800 on the day. I was a thrilled and very proud Principal to have witnessed our students live music performances. Thank you to Miss Carmen Woods and Mr Thom Connellan for going the extra mile in supporting our students. Congratulations to Javen Ricevuto who has recently being accepted into the Singleton Army Barracks for work experience. This is a big achievement as the Army Barracks only accept one student per month via an application process.

We had two very talented girls in Tiarra Charles and Samantha Renfrey representing the school at the Riverina NSW Training Awards. A big congratulations to Tiarra Charles who was awarded the Riverina School Based Trainee of the year. This is an outstanding honour and well deserved. It is timely to mention the fantastic support of local employers who have been outstanding in supporting our students in their SBAT endeavours. Our recent tertiary indigenous excursion to Canberra was a great success. This was a combined excursion with Hay War Memorial High School. Thank you to Canberra Rotary for fully sponsoring the event. Our students were given an amazing opportunity to explore a University campus and immerse themselves in University life. Thank you to Ms Stobon Lloyd and Mr Graham Longford for organising the trip. Have a great holiday and stay warm. School will resume for students on Tuesday 19th July.

A letter sent by Simon Angove who worked with the children on Monday, 20 June

Ambulance Victoria recently visited Balranald Central School. Without exception, the staff were welcoming, professional and supportive of our programs. The highlight of our visit has been th e respect we were extended

by your students; their exemplary behaviour; and their commitment to learning.

This was exemplified by the Kindergarten students who were learning about the role of a paramedic, the importance of knowing to call 000 in case of emergency as well as recognizing the difference between a small accident and a big accident. They very much enjoyed meeting our mascot “Stretch” and listening to his story.

The Grade 1/2 students were brilliant in role playing the actions they can take when getting help in a serious medical emergency. These steps included to remember to stop, think and stay safe; shout and squeeze; ask for

help; call 000 and stay on the phone. The students also recognized the importance of knowing their address and telephone number as well as recognizing the difference between a small accident and a big accident. They also

very much enjoyed meeting our mascot “Stretch”. They were definitely “Triple Zero Heroes”.

A highlight for the students was the ambulance tour where students spent time in the back of the ambulance and could experience the lights and sirens.

We encourage parents to discuss these key messages with their children and plan a response to a medical

emergency in their home or while children are away from the family home. We also ask parents to help their

children complete the 000 Emergency Card they were given.

The Year 9 and 10 students participated in the Ambulance Victoria secondary school program, “Get Linked”.

The program is set within the context of risk taking behaviours including alcohol and drug use. Get Linked‟s

key messages for the students are to recognize when they or their friends are at risk; to call 000(triple zero)

immediately in a medical emergency; to practice responses to medical emergencies where they may be required

to administer first aid including CPR and defibrillation; and to understand that paramedics are concerned

primarily with good health outcomes.

We encourage parents to discuss these key messages with their children and plan a response to a medical

emergency in their home or while children are away from the family home. The students were given a CPR

practice aid, a „pillow pal‟. Why not ask them to demonstrate their CPR skills or discuss the location of AED‟s

in the local community and how easy they are to use?

We also recommend the Emergency + Smartphone App. This App has been developed by Australia‟s Triple

Zero Awareness Working Group and is for iOS and Android devices. The App is designed to display the GPS

coordinates of the phone's location that the caller can read out to the emergency operator. The app is free of

charge and available for download from iTunes and Google Play Stores.

Thank you to the school staff who enthusiastically supported the Ambulance Victoria program. A big thanks to

Katherine and Kimberley, the local Balranald Paramedics, who attended and offered some insight into their

experiences. A special thanks must also be extended to the students who were engaged and interested in

learning the skills that could potentially save a life.

Visit www.ambulance.vic.gov.au for more information about Ambulance Victoria and their Education for Life

community and school programs.

The students are a credit to their parents and the leaders and staff of the school. Thank you for allowing us to

visit and work with your students to build their capacity to respond to medical emergencies.

On Sunday, 26th June the Unknowns and The Black Shadows travelled out to Homebush pub instead of Lake Paika due to Weather Conditions. They performed in the Developing Young Talent fundraiser for Friends of the Southern Cross and school creative pursuits. I really enjoyed singing in the band. My favourite part was when both bands came together to sing the song Lover. Thank you to Miss Woods and Thom Connellan for all their help. - Chloe Calleja

Artworks created by 16 students at Lake Paika were auctioned at the Developing Young Talent event. I painted the main front door of the Paika house which I painted because it was a historical feature. At the event I really enjoyed the art auction. I even bought a painting for $70. - Jack Gervasi

VIRTUAL EXCURSION TO THE ART GALLERY OF NSW

Students in Year 5/6 went on an excursion to the Art Gallery of NSW on Wednesday last week. This excursion was part of the Gulbalahna program. They were able to have a tour and view a range of Aboriginal artworks through DART connections, which provide virtual excursions through video conferencing. Students also were able to interact with artists and ask questions about the collection on display.

NAIDOC 2016

Songlines : The living narrative of our nation

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. As a school community we join with students of St Joseph’s and the wider community to participate each year in a day to celebrate and embrace Indigenous culture. Our day last Friday got off to an incredible start with the highly entertaining performance by Sean Choolburra. Sean’s comedy is uniquely and truly Australian. He blends popular culture, dance, comedy and hip hop in a high energy, feel good show. His numerous talents include didgeridoo player, singer, dancer, actor, songwriter and comedian- no wonder he won the 2002 Raw Comedy NSW State Final and was the founder and leader of Sydney's first independent traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance Company, the Ngaru Dancers, which he formed in 1993. A NAISDA graduate, Sean also danced and toured internationally with the renowned Bangarra Dance Company. He was an artist in residence at the NSW Art Gallery for three years. One of his career highlights was a personnel performance for the Dalai Lama himself (a second highlight was an appearance on the NRL Footy Show!) Sean drew on his life experiences as an Aboriginal artist, including hilarious black fella yarns and didgeridoo playing. Sean included many students from the audience to join with him in his presentation. And even managed to make ‘fire’ as a finale to his fun show! All students were then divided into eight K-12 groups (Dinawan, Wambad, Burrandhang, Biladurang, Wambuwany, Wandayali, Wilay and Gugubarra) to rotate through cultural activities that included wood art painting; salt dough echidnas; storytelling; green sea turtles; johnny cakes; rock etching; and hand print yapalims. Everyone gathered back into the quad to share a $2 meal deal BBQ and have some fun with a traditional game in the afternoon. Matthew and Lizzy shared with us their award-winning speech from the recent NAIDOC public speaking competition to conclude the day. Thank you to everyone for joining in and having fun. Hopefully everyone learnt a little more about one of the oldest cultures on earth.
