Academic Integrity in the Research Work : A Regional Perspective

Mohamed Nagib Abou-Zeid The American University in Cairo

Academic integrity is a cornerstone for any healthy academic practice.

Research is, obviously, no exception to that. As such, academic integrity in academic research has been receiving an increased attention over the past decade. The massive amount of information, the sharpened edges of competition as well as the complexity of modern research all play a role and impact the integrity in research.

This presentation addresses recent trends of violation in academic integrity in general and in academic research in particular. Statistics from the region are presented to illustrate the nature of violations both quantitatively and qualitatively. Data from the industry is presented to demonstrate the application view on non healthy academic practices.

The main outcome of this work is to propose a policy framework to foster academic integrity within regional and international academic institutions on one hand and between academic and industry on the other. Examples will be presented on best practices that need to be considered for such policy framework. Recommendations are provided as to how to engage students and junior researchers in healthy academic integrity practices.

Performance Evaluation and Design Parameters of Wire Mesh Mist Eljl / Finator in Bubble Columns

Waheed A. Al-Masry

Abdudah S. AI-Dughaitber Department of Chemical Engineering, College of Engmeericg, King Saud

University, Riyadh. Saudi Arabia

Experimental studies on the effects of the design parameters on performance characteristics of a wire mesh mist eliminator in a 6" bubble column have been conducted. The performance characteristics investigated are droplet separation efficiency and pressure drop across the demister pad. The design parameters are specific surface area, void fraction, material of constructioo7 disengagement height, wire diameter. packing density and superficial gas velocity. All demisters are 6 " diameter and of 0.1 m pad thickness. Expedients are carried out for air-tem at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. The experimental data on the droplet removal efficiency are obtained using Laser based Droplet Sizcr (the Malvern Particle Sizer). However, measurements of the pressure drop are done using a U-tube manometer device. It is found that the removal efficiency and wet pressure drop increase with the increase of the demister specific surface area, packing density. and superficial gas velocity. In contrast, they are found to increase with the decrease of the demister void fraction and wire diameter. The PVC demister provides higher separation efficiency and pressure drop than the HM (Teflon) demister. These are both nonmetallic. Alternatively, SS demister provides the lowest separation efficiency and pressure drop. The separation efficiency increases slightly with the increase of the disengagement height. However, the opposite ,is observed for the pressure drop that increases with decrease of the disengagement height It is noticed that the effect of the design parameters - explored- except the disengagement height is the same for the separation efficiency as well as the pressure drop. It is worth mentioning that the increase of 1he separation efficiency is a desired target while the apposite is true for the pressure drop.

Two Correlations were developed for predicting the separation efficiency with ±4 % accuracy white that for pressure drop was ±10 %.

The Toxical Impact of a Newly Anticancer Drug "Gemcitabine" on the Histological Structure of

Mice's Testis and the Developmental Formation of Some Embryonic Organs

Samira Omar Abu Baker

Department of Zoology, Girl's College of Science, University of King Abdul Aziz, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Mature white male mice were treated by a dose of 130 mg/kg of

gemcitabine through peritoneal injection. These treated males were placed with mature normal females for fertilization. Females were dissected after the 14th day of pregnancy to investigate embryos. The histological investigation of testis showed an interruption in spermatogenesis process represented by distorted spermatocytes and spermatozoa and a reduction in their number. The investigation of some embryonic organs (liver, kidney, small intestine, spleen, zatrek gland and testis) after two weeks of pregnancy also showed the serious effect of the drug on the histological structure of these organs. The drug also decreased fertility and the survivorship of embryos.

Therefore, we recommended being careful in using gemcitabine as anticancer drug.

Environmental Assessment of Generating Power Plants

Waheed A. Al-Masry

M.A. El-Kady King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

The protection of the environment has become a major concern of the

public with increasing pressure on the electric utility industry for the satisfaction of both emission rate and ambient air quality standards. In this respect, thermal power stations produce both thermal and chemical pollution of the environment, either directly or indirectly, by invariably releasing the exhaust gases through chimney stacks into the atmosphere. In addition, the heated condenser cooling water is usually discharged straight into the nearest water source. Exhaust gases released in the atmosphere (which often contain sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulates and other pollutants), invariable include many pollutants whose composition depends on the fossil fuel being burnt in the power plant.

This paper presents an advanced methodology to evaluate, assess and mitigate the environmental impacts associated with electricity generation. The methodology includes measuring and/or calculating various parameters as required by the environmental agencies at various power plants and, subsequently, compares the obtained environmental parameters and indicators against the prevailing standards and requirements. Pertinent recommendations and remedial actions can then be developed to reduce the pollution level if found beyond the standard and requirement levels. The results of this paper are believed to be very important in ensuring that the developed procedures for such environmental assessments are general, well-defined and easy-to-implement in order to make pertinent recommendations to meet the environmental standards and requirements.

Prevalence of Fungal Nail Infection in Yemen

Saeed M.S. Alghalibi Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Sana'a University

Abdullrahman M. Al-Wadei Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine, Sana'a University, Yemen

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nails, encompasses all fungal

infections caused by primary nail pathogens which invade healthy nail plate, and includes those which invade secondarily in subjects with existing nail disease.

A total of 980 clinically suspected cases of onychomycosis were examined for causative fungi during January 2004 to January 2008. The collected specimens were examined by direct microscopic and by culture. On direct microscopic examination, 68% of the specimens were negative for fungal elements. Amonge the 225 specimens with positive fungal culture, 122 (54.2%) were dermatophytes, 63 (28%) were molds and 40 (17.8%) were Candida sp. Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes and Microsporium canis were the main dermatophytes isolated. The molds isolated were predominantly Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus and Fusarium oxysporum. One fungal species was isolated from 189 specimens, while in 36 of the cases two different species were found.

Itraconazole and terbinafine were the most effective antifungal drugs against isolated fungi followed by fluconazole and ketoconazole. key words: Onychomycosis; Dermatophytes; Nails; Molds; Yeasts
