Introducing The Royal Melbourne Show '86 MR. BRIAN PARRY,

DIRECTOR, ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OF VICTORIA.

Italians have made a contribution to Australian life and culture. The 1986 Show will feature Italy as our guest nation and members of the Italian Community will provide much of the music, dance, singing and general entertainment. In addition to all the pedigree animals and agricultural porducts, arts and crafts, wool fashion parades, and the Victorian Government Display Centre, this year's Show has many other new features. The State's Police, fire brigade and other emergency services will combine to provide a spectacular arena attraction. The show also sees considerable reduction in rides and games and the establishment of a new permanent horticultural display. The wide range of attractions for every section and age group of the community will represent outstanding value in entertainment and education for the whole family.

1031 Hand Milking Championships

Fun and laughter will literally 'splash' onto the AMP Lawn for one hour every day during the heats of the 1986 'LIVE ON MILK' Hand Milking Championships.

Contestants will be shown the correct techniques by an expert, and then the would-be champs tackle the six friendly, and extremely patient, Guernseys.

The contestants with the most amount of milk in their buckets win and hopefully by the time of the finals, their aim will be perfect!

Royal Show Woodchopping

AMERICAN SKATEBOARD CHAMP ALLEN LOSI, MEETS UP WITH AUSTRALIA'S BEST IN THE "BIG M" RAMP THRASH, EACH DAY, ON THE WOODCHOP LAWN.

The Big M Ramp Thrash

$2Z000 IN PRIZE MONEY IS UP FOR GRABS IN THE ROYAL SHOW WOODCHOPPING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The fast and furious pace of woodchopping is one of those attractions at agricultural shows which attract huge crowds around the country. The Royal Melbourne Show's woodchopping demonstrations are a perpetual crowd pleaser, and this year there is even more to see on the Woodchop Lawn Area in Peck Street with the highrolling of the skateboard ramp thrash, the fun of 'Life Be In It' games and the charm of pioneer bush crafts.

Burley Tasmanian, Dave Foster is the hot favorite to a fair share of the $27,000 total prize pool Dave is the only competitor to achieve more than two successive wins in the Grand Aggregate since it's introduction in 1955 - Dave is aiming for his seventh consecutive trophy this year - and is confident this year that he will go home with the Trojan Golden Axe.

Events this year include the usual tree felling and double handed sawing, and following the success of last year's International Timber Festival, a number of the more unusual events will be repeated this year.

They include The Dickie Donuts Chokermans Race where a competitor must negotiate a number of obstacles before placing a steel choker cable around a log, and The Matthews Timber Jack'n Jill Double Handed Sawing Chamionship for male and female partners.

The programme gets underway on Friday 19 September in the Boral Woodchop Stadium, and a series of novelty demonstrations will take place every day on the Woodchop Lawn between noon and 12.20pm.

Allen is rated fifth in the American National Skateboard Association's ranking Allen is coming to Melbourne for this year's Show, and along with some of Australia's top ranking skateboarders - 'Ibny Hallem, Hugh McGaig and brothers Stephen and Peter Hill - will present a breath taking 15 minute demonstration on the specially built Big M Ramp every day. The demonstrations will include some of the sport's most spectacular manoeuvres including inverts, aerials, twists, hand and foot plants, ollies, grinds and slides. And if you don't know what those terms mean, come along and have a look!

AL- Medibank lifr- Private

ieLife Be In It Activities Forget about Norm - Follow Libby's example, and come along to learn the fun way to health and fitness. 'IWo two-hour sessions of supervised games will be held every day at 10.00am and 2.00pm.

The thrills, and hopefully few spills, of competitive skateboarding makes its debut at the Royal Melbourne Show this year. If you don't know who Allen Losi is, ask one of the skateboarding fans in the family, and they will tell you that

Obedience Dog Demonstrations

Supported by Bowens Timber Group Presented in conjunction with the School of Education at the Chisholm Institute of Technology, the workshop gives children between the ages of four and 14 a chance to explore their own creative potential. Sessions will take place at regular intervals in the Woodchop Area every day.

Old time Bush and Home Craft Hands-on Workshops Presented by the 'Paggerty Pioneer Education Centre Wattle and daubing, wheat grinding, billy making, tinkering, brush broom making and bush-style wool spinning, aren't the usual skills employed by Victorians every day, but you can have a chance to see

these traditional bush crafts in action during regular intervals every day on the Woodchop Lawn. Students and staff from the Bush Settlement Camp at Taggerty will present the fascinating programme, and old tools used for fencing and building by our pioneering forebears.

If Fido is being difficult at the moment, drop into the obedience demonstrations every day (except Thursday 18 September) between 12.30 and 2.00pm to see some of Victoria's top handlers and their dogs in action. Since the introduction of the lunchtime demonstrations six years ago, thousands of people have picked up valuable tips on how to make their unruly mutt into the best behaved canine on the block - and this year it might by your turn.

The Carlton and United Tug-O-VIlar Championships Straining, heaving, grunting and at times virtually lying on one's back is the name of the game at the exciting annual tug-o-war championships. Teams from some of the state's best known pubs will pit their strength against each other on Saturday 20 September for the championship title. Heats start at 2.00pm, with the final being staged around 6.00pm.

Coal Creek Historical Village Thousands of Victorians have stepped back in time to the 1890's at the Coal Creek Historical Village in the South Gippsland township of Korumburra, and this year the recreated coal mining village of last century comes to the Show. Blacksmith Alex Brown, printer David Tattersall and members of the Coal Creek Spinning Group will spend hours demonstrating their skills to the crowd every day of the Show - Blacksmith 10.00am-4.00pm; Printer 10.00am-noon, 1.00pm-3.00pm,4.00pm-6.00pm; Wool Spinners 10.00am-6.00pm.

Victoria lbgether The Royal Melbourne Show is one of the few times Melbourne's city slickers and their country cousins can get together and see just how much they have in common. And that's the theme of this year's Victorian Government display. Nearly 20 Victorian Government departments got together to produce VICTORIA — TOGETHER, and the two floors of displays at the Victorian Government Display Centre is not to be missed!

Agriculture and Rural Affairs The lives and problems of farmers and other rural residents is brought to life with a dramatic audio visual display of this exhibit.

Arts Melbourne just wouldn't be Melbourne without our distinctive trams, and that applies to the colourful decorative trams which liven the streets of our suburbs. This year Victorian senior ministers will arrive in style to the Show in the Peace Tram and when they do, Rod Quantock and Jack and Jack will supervise the painting of our latest mobile work of art.

Commonwealth Department of Aviation So you want to fly. It's highly unlikely you'll grow a pair of wings, but you can imagine what it's like to soar with the birds at the Department of Aviation's marquee with displays including control tower consoles, radar display units, flight simulators and you can even peer into the cockpit of a light aircraft.

Community Services Every community service available to Victorians is within easy reach at the Display Centre.

Country Fire Authonty Just a few short years ago, the CFA proved they were the true heros of the bush during the Ash Wednesday bushfires, so don's miss their demonstrations of operations which shows how they protect our unique bushland.

Department of Conservation Forests and Lands Salinity and its effect on urban and rural Victorian communities is an increasing concern, and this year you can find out what is being done to combat the problem.

Department of

lbcdilLsVogy and Resources What is the latest news in technology and resources in Victoria? Go to the ITR display and find out!

Department of the Premier and Cabinet Despite its alleged fire-breathing habits, the dragon is really a peace loving creature. So come along and find out just how friendly the Peaceful Dragon is — you can even go for a ride on its scaley back.

Education Even if it has been years since you attended school, take a trip down memory lane abroad the Spirit of Education — a country-city express which links our urban and rural communities.

Government Information Have a question that needs answering? The Victorian Government Information Service can help you find that answer quickly.

Health The message to smokers from the Department of Health and the Anti-Cancer Council is QUIT, and for those who haven't developed the nicotine habit — especially children DON'T START.

Housing New and innovative housing programmes to keep roofs over Victorians' heads.

Law Department Human Right, Legal Aid, Plain English and Courts admministration are just some of the facets of Victoria's Law Department.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade Five major operations including the Butler Chemical and a suburban school fire drill are examined in the MFB display.

Police The mounted branch of the Victoria Police has always been a big crowd pleaser for young and old, and very special guest this year is police drum horse Gendarme III.

Rural Water Commission Ride through Victoria's urban waterways on the RWC's Show Boat, where you can also play games and win prizes.

Tburism Victoria's and possibility the world's most famous penguin, Penguin Vic, is the star attraction of the non-stop film and threatre presentation visiting many of Victoria's exciting destinations.

Transport Get moving with the Ministry of Transport, from getting around our ports and harbours to our freeways and public transport system.

Workcare Find out about the programme's innovations and achievements during its initia112 months.

BE ONE OF THE FIRST 70 WELCOME SPRING '86 AT THE ROYAL SHOW GARDEN DISPLAY, PRESENTED BY ANZ AND HORTICO.

Australia's Biggest Arts and Crafts Show Sponsored by Coles New World and Variety Stores

Our annual ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW is even bigger and better this year, with the Italian community getting right behind the largest show of its type in Australia. More than 6,000 entries have been received for this year's Show, and a strong Italian influence is reflected in the needle craft, embroidery, knitting and crochet, tapestry, lace making, rug making, art, ceramics, bread making and Italian panettone. Judging took place before the opening of the Show, and as you will see by the entries, it was no easy feat for the judges too choose winners.

COLES

Entries just seem to get better every year, including the art section which was judged by well-known painter Anne Graham, and ceramic and glass categories. Entries are displayed at No 2 Arts and Crafts Pavilion, behind the Cummings Grand Stand off Degraves Street; the Royal Block in Plummer Avenue opposite the RASV Administration Building, and; the Wm Angliss Memorial Gallery nest to Centre Point (all art work).

AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST ARTS AND CRAFTS DISPLAY WILL BE SEEN AT THIS YEAR'S ROYAL SHOW.

Royal Show Garden ALIVE Display It's spring, and what better way to be inspired to exercise the green thumb than by visiting the ANZ-HORTICO ROYAL SHOW GARDEN DISPLAY. The ANZ, Hortico and the Nurserymen's Association have set what you can do to spruce up your own garden this spring with a magnificent display on a split-level site in Plummer Avenue behind the Mitchell Grandstand. Every garden and gardener is different, so four different displays have been created: the cool tranquility of ferns and fountains; the relaxing 'country setting' with shrubs, barbecue and patio; herbs and perennials set around a gazebo, and; native and tub plants surrounded by various grasses. There is also something for flat dwellers with indoor plants and floral art exhibits in the display's astro dome, where you can also get valuable gardening advice throughout the Show.

18

Sponsored by Kodak (Australasia) Shutterbugs will be inspired to load the camera with film and start taking happy snaps after visiting the 18TH NATIONAL EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHY at the Kodak Photography Building, behind the RASV Administration Building, between Degraves and Skene Streets.

Presented by the RASVin conjuction with the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies and Kodak, it is one of the state's finest exhibitions of amateur photography. Entries are in colour slides, and colour and black and white prints, and reeflect the photographers' interpretations of topics ranging from People to Social Documentation. And you never know, if you practise hard, your photos may be on display at next year's Show!

Australia's leading bank.

COMMONWEALTH BANK.

The Commonwealth Bank Farm Learning Centre

Rural Education Programmes It is unfortunate that many city children rarely have the chance to pat a woolly lamb milk a cow or say hello to a friendly pig. That is, until they visit the Royal Melbourne Show and the three RURAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMES. This year the RASV has expanded the programme to encompass a Rural Learning Area where school groups and other children from urban areas can learn about life on the farm and in rural areas, a Produce Display, and of course the favourite for children of all ages, the Animal Nursery. The aims of programmes is not only to have fun, but to learn more about the lives of our country cousins and agricutural and rural industries. Who said learning was boring!

The Westpac Produce Display

THE BANK

A daily programme of demonstrations, lectures, displays and audience participation in relation to domestic livestock is the theme behind the Learning Centre at the western end of the Pig Pavilion in Plummer Avenue. The Commonwealth Bank and the RASV have also developed a series of student project sheets to complement the following daily activities at the centre:

Cattle on the Farm and Milking Demonstrations The contrasting development of beef and dairy cattle, modern milking machinery and the feeding of calves will be demonstrated every hour from 10.30am to 2.30pm. Students will also be invited to hand milk a cow or groom a stud animal —something many country children do every day of their lives!

Sheep Demonstrations Every hour from 10am to 2pm, wool and fat lambs will be on display, along with a discussions on the various breeds and the methods of handling sheep on farms. Audiences will be able to feel the differeent types of wool that various sheep produce, and subject availability, a shearing exhibition will be included in each demonstration.

Pig Exhibition Pig breeders will be on duty from 10am to noon every day to answer questions about the pigs on display, including a sow and her litter.

LEARNING THE AGRICULTURAL "BASICS" IS WHAT THE COMMONWEALTH BANK FARM LEARNING CENTRE IS ALL ABOUT.

Ulestpac

Food glorious food is the main theme of the Produce Display in Centenary Hall. Not only will visitors be able to see the state's farm products and learn how they are transformed from the 'raw' state to the way we buy them in the shops, but they will also be encouraged to touch, smell and best of all, taste the produce. Special exhibits will display and talk about eggs, honey, nuts, fruit and vegetables, barley and wheat, as well as special displays by Mitchelton Vintners and the shires of Mildura, Shepparton and Hamilton.

National Australia4Bank

National Australia Bank Animal Nursery Undoubtedly one of the favourite exhibitions at the Royal Melbourne Show, especially for the children, is the Animal Nursery. Over the years millions of young Victorians and other visitiors have had the opportunity to hold and touch various domestic and native animals ad their young — often for the first time. This year children can meet horses, cattle, sheep, a donkey, pigs, goats, birds, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, foxes, reptiles, koalas, wombats, an emu, a kangaroo and the nursery's very speccial guest, an Australian Miniature Pony which only measures 87cm high.

Stereo AM at the Show Stereo sound on Melbourne's AM band is the most exciting innovation since the introduction of FM Stereo in the '70s. Stereo AM and the receivers needed are still relatively new in Melbourne, so a visit to the Stereo AM Sound Lounge module beneath the Mitchell Grandstand in Plummer Avenue, is just the thing to get you"in tune!' The Sound Lounge is designed to let you appreciate AM Stereo at its best, and information on current equipment is also available. Personnel from eight Melbourne Stereo AM radio stations — 3AK, 3AW, 3DB, 3KZ, 3L0, 3MP, 3UZ and 3XY — will man the lounge on a rotation basis throughout the Show, as will the popular provincial stations 3B0 (Bendigo), 3UL (Warragul), 3BA (Ballarat) and 3SR (Shepparton).

Royal Show wedding Fair Presented by McKerr Whitfield Following its spectacular debut 'ceremony' at last year's Show, the Melbourne Wedding Fair is back in 1986 with even more for engaged couples.

Every year in Victoria about 29,000 couples tie the matrimonial at ceremonies and receptions attended by about two million people help spend the staggering annual bill of $210 million.

And to make sure you get the best value for your part of that $210 million, around 20 companies are participating in this year's Show, and can provide information on almost everything from wedding cakes to venues to jewellers and even home builders.

It's also one of the few times that information about all these services is available under the one roof, but that isn't the only bonus for engaged couples. Every engaged couple who attends the Fair will be presented with a free copy of Wedding Etiquette, and will also have a chance to win a fabulous two-week honeymoon in beautiful Western Samoa.

AUSTRALIAS "FALL GUY IA

1111,

JAMIESON

It is almost impossible to know where to start when listing the Main Arean highlights for the 1986 Royal Melbourne Show... because there are just so many of them! What about the emergency services "tattoo" which combines the tense excitement of an armed siege, a police car chase and the crack Special Operations Group in action. Once again the fireworks will draw delighted "oohs" and "aahs" from the audience as the sky explodes with light, and the crowd always has more than enough enthusiasm for the Grand Parade featuring some of the country's finest livestock.

Then of course there is Showfest celebrating Italy's participation as Guest Nation in 1986, or the horse events including the Garryowen, or Bridgestone Holden Precision Driving team, or the 3MP-Milo Farm Sunday.. the list just goes on and on. One of the best things about the attractions in the Main Arena is that they are all free of charge once the general admission is paid at the gates... and some of our features would certainly command hefty prices if staged elsewhere. The RASV continues to listen to the needs of patrons, and following the success of last year's 'experiment: seating will once again be installed on the main arena for patrons to enjoy the spectacles at close hand. And it is even easier to get to the Main Arena this year with the new Dunlop Walk Way dissecting the eastern end of the arena.

Ian Jamieson, International Stuntman Australia's own "Fall Guy:' Ian Jamieson has one simple mission in life... and that's the thrill people with his spectacular stunts.

When Ian's not falling blind-folded onto a landing pad packed with explosives or catapulting himself over five buses he's tearing around fair and show grounds ablaze from head to foot. Jamieson is undoubtedly one of the best, a statement that can be soundly backed by checking the world stunt records he currently holds:

• 1976 High Fall into Cartons (over 156 metres)

• 1979 High Fall on Fire into Explosives

• 1980 Human Torch Fire Run (over 290 metres)

• 1980 Human Catapult over four cars (over 15.8 metres)

• 1982 Human Catapult over five buses

• 1985 High Fall Blindfolded into Explosives

At this year's Royal Show, Ian will introduce one act to Victoria in which he lies in a burning coffin that disintegrates when sticks of explosive are detonated around the base of his resting place.

JAMIESON POSES FOR A NEWS CREW PRIOR TO HIS ILL-FATED HIGH FALL IN POLAND.

His other act starts with a commando style entry into the arena sliding down from the peak of a 40 metre high crane onto a landing pad which also explodes on impact. Ian will alternate these acts over eight nights during the Show. Jamieson has recently returned to Australia from a tour to Europe which proved highly successful although somewhat more dangerous than even Ian expected. An equipment failure during his first performance in Poland almost cost Ian his life. He was unconscious for about 30 minutes before recovering in hospital. Perhaps that is why there is such a big demand for his act in Europe. When Ian's not leaping around in a ball of fire or coming or going as a result of some explosion detonated by one of his staff, he's making films for world wide distribution. Other ways he fills in his spare time is by being a stunt co-ordinator for Australian films including "Sunday lb° Far Away:' "Picnic at Hanging Rock:' and "Freedom for The rIbrm of His Natural Life!' Ian says that the book he wrote dealing with his career and life style sold out in 1981. He also travelled Australia with Evel Knieval in 1979. Jamieson's performances at the Melbourne Royal will be sponsored by Humes A.R.C., a subsidiary of Humes Ltd.

Emergency Services' "Operation Spectacular"

PERSONALITY 1278 Presented by RADIO 3AW

It really will be a spectacular operation when Victoria's emergency services take over the Main Arena for five breath-taking nights during one of the Show's most enthralling displays ever. The Victoria Police, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Country Fire Authority and Victorian Ambulance Service, have joined forces to present a top evening of entertainment, while at the same time showing patrons how they are making Victoria a safer and happier place to live in. The highlight of the presentation is the simulated siege, the daring rescue attempt by the Special Operations Group followed by a police car chase, and fire outbreak which is quelled by the MFB and the CFA. The Police are out in force with their Air Arm, Special Operations Group, Traffic Operations Group, Motor Driving School combining with the other emergency service organisations to present a series of exciting operational "sorties!' THE BRIDGES7ONE HOLDEN PRECISION DRIVING TEAM IN ACTION.

Once again the spectacular precision driving team returns to the Royal Melbourne Show for the 12th time... yes, we think they're that good... with their breathtaking and daring performances.

Performing stunts that would make even the most able street driver pale at the thought, the team defies gravity and death with high-speed formation driving, figure of eight

circuits, ramp to ramp jumps and leaping off ramps over other cars. It takes cars and drivers in top condition, nerves of steel and split-second timing. No wonder it is often referred to as "theatre on wheels!' This year the team is using the recently released Holden VL Calais, and besides the bar reinforcement inside the cabin, it is almost exactly like the car you would drive on the road.

But we don't recommend you go home and try some of the team's stunts... they are purely for the experts. Performance Times: Friday September 19 3.15pm 7.40pm Saturday September 20

The vehicles will include a Saracen, a six wheeled armoured personnel carrier, an armoured scout car and a Staghound which saw service with Australia's C.M.F. Calvary Regiments until 1971. The armoured vehicles will drive around the Arena towing guns that will "fire" shots over the stands. The Army display will occur at 2.00pm on the 19th, 23rd, 25th, 26th and 27th of September.

HAY BALING DEMONSTRATION BY THE WHITTLESEA AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

3ME1Milo Farm Sunday Antique tractors, butter making, sheaf tossing, horse shoeing and a host of furry and fluffy animals are just part of the excitement to be had at this year's farm day in the main arena.

On Sunday September 21 between 9.30am and 2pm, the arena will be , transformed into a giant farmyard with many typical farm activities for patrons to see, and in some cases, experience. Several of the day's demonstrations will reflect life on the farm before our modern mechanization, and there is also a chance to really get into all the action of the day by taking part in the whacky Country Games for City People. It is one of the few times that city slickers can become a part of a realistic farm situation, so bring along the kids and have fun!

Antique Tractor Display A special display of old tractors restored to top notch condition, which can be compared to the latest models on display around the Show Grounds.

Billy Boiling Competition Find out from the experts how to make the top notch cuppa.

Bullock Team an Children can take an iting hay

ride throughout the orning on an authentic bullock gon.

Butter Making and Churning Find out how our grandparents made their own butter... before supermarkets were invented!

Cattle Milking Demonstration Compare hand milking with the modem milking machines, and try to work out which ones the Guernsey cows prefer!

Clydesdale Tbam The magnificent Carlton and United Breweries team of six Clydesdales are a crowd favourite wherever they go.

Damper Making Demonstrations The smell of freshly baked damper is almost impossible to resist especially when free samples are offered.

Farm Animal Nursery A delightful display featuring calves, lambs, kids and foals.

Goat Milking Demonstration Members of the Goat Breeders Society will demonstrate that not only cows have delicious milk.

Hay Baling Demonstration The difference between old and new methods, demonstrated by the Whittlesea Agricultural Society.

Horse Drawn Carriages Display of magnificently restored horse drawn vehicles by members of the Australian Driving Society.

Horse Shoeing Demonstrations An experienced farrier shows just how it's done.

Horse and Vehicle Sale Keep the cheque book handy for a genuine auction of horses and horse-drawn vehicles.

Honda Agricultural Motorcycle Competition A spectacular competition showing the flexibility of the bikes and the skill of the riders.

Sheaf Tbssing See how the loading of lorries and lofts has been made into a fun competition.

Sheep Shearing Compare the difference between modem shearing equipment and the traditional blades.

Stock Horse Demonstrations The agility and farm sense of the farmer's invaluable helper, demonstrated by members of the Australian Stock Horse Association.

Yard Dog Trial Demonstrations of the farmer's best friend working through 'typical' farmyard obstacles.

Royal Show Fireworks! No matter your age, it is almost impossible to suppress the small child inside each of us when the night sky is lit up by fireworks. Imagine being seated in the Main Arena.

The crowd is hushed in expectation when suddenly the evening air is shattered by a gunshot, and a car squeals down a lonely street. The police arrive with lights flashing and the chase is on... right in front of your eyes. That's what Syd Howard and his Fireworks International has in store for us this year with his novel cops 'n robbers fireworks show. Each show will also include roman candles, fountains and Chinese floral displays. So no matter, how late it is or tired you are, you cimply can't go home without seeing our spectacular fireworks display.

PAL Superdog Stakes Hours of practice by both handlers and dogs make the third Pal Superdog Stakes a firm Royal Show favourite. It's an event unique to Australia when both pedigreed and non-pedigreed dogs battle both the clock and obstacles, some including a fence over one metre high! Each dog must also make its way through a specially constructed tunnel and sit for five seconds in an "obstacle square!" 'Thy doing that with Fido at home. Performance Times: Friday September 19

The Royal Life 5,000 Metre Footrace One of the many highlights on Show Day (Thursday September 25) is the running of the Royal Life 5,000. Members of clubs affiliated with the Victorian Cross Country League will contest the gruelling race, which will take them around the Main Arena approximately eight and a half times. Even once around the arena seems like an awful long way!

Race Time: Thursday September 25 6.00pm

Clownin' Around with Stuart Lear For years Stuart Lear, his crazy car and a contingent of "Keystone Cops" have delighted Show audiences with their ridiculous antics. This year "Stuwie" returns with his "Clownin Around" routine, and audiences should be warned... Stuwie and his mapcap friends are likely to pop up when you least expect it!

Horse events and Contests There are a few places in the world where such a comprehensive programme of equestrian events and contests can be seen, than at the 1986 Royal Melbourne Show. Almost every event imaginable is a highlight in itself in the Main Arena... from the frantic pace of the novelty bending race, to the unsurpassed tradition of the Garryowen. But more about that later. Other events include campdrafting, featuring Australia's top horses and stockmen, tentpegging, and the ride and drive where the ability to negotiate a tight obstacle course is vital.

Novelty Events • The Bowens Home Improvement

Centre Australian Flag Race Championship.

• The Four'N'Tk/venty Bending Race Championship.

• The Victorian Junior Flag Race Championship.

Showjumping • The Carlton and United

Breweries Stakes. • The Age Prince of Wales Cup. • The ANZ Bank Grand Prix for

Ride and Drive • The Sagar Saddlery Ride and

Ride and Drive Competition.

Special Highlight — The Garryowen A tough three-hour competition which will test 60 of Australia's leading horsewomen and their mounts, the Garryowen will be held on Thesday September 23, starting at 9am. Since the trophy was first presented at the Show way back in 1934, patrons have marvelled at the skill of both riders and horses. Not only are the entrants' judged on their ability to ride, but also the conformation and manners of the mount, saddlery and costume and general appearance of the horse/rider combination.

Blue Ribbon Livestock Livestock was the primary reason why agricultural shows such as the Royal Melbourne were initiated and years later, livestock is still at the top of the attraction ladder to the thousands of visitors who pour through the gates every year. In fact, a recent survey showed the top priority of 55 percent of Show patrons was to see the livestock. The Royal Melbourne Show is important not just to the breeders who exhibit their prize animals and discuss their interest with other breeders, but also the city visitor whose only change to see such livestock is often at the Show. This year at the Show, patrons will see over 70 breeds and varieties of poultry (including ducks and turkeys), more than 30 breeds of pigeons, five main varieties of caged birds, 20 breeds of beef and dual purpose cattle, five breeds of dairy cattle, more than 16 breeds of horses and ponies, 18 breeds of sheep, five breeds of pigs, four breeds of goats, over 140 breeds of dogs, 69 breeds of cats, and lots and lots of rabbits!

Championship Shearing Watch the hands and shears fly like lightning at Centenary Hall when shearers around the country compete in various major championships and teams' competitions. The action is thick and fast as the fleece is removed... and the sheep don't seem to mind all that attention on stage either! • Australian Strong Wool
