AcademicYear2017-18(March) Dear Friends and Readers, And here we are at the end of one more academic year. Time really flies. It is 5 years since I joined this school and every day has been eventful. Life is always full of action when there are children of all ages around you. That is a rejuvenating factor which keeps the teachers going and is also a driving force. What constantly drives us closer to our vision is our continuous and single minded effort to train and groom our students into 21st century learners. This is a herculean task to do. What is most motivating for teachers is when they see the students working hard and their parents supporting in every way. In December 2017, a story writing workshop called Katha Utsav was held in New Delhi in Ridge Valley School. The workshop was held on 27, 28 and 29 of December. There were more than 300 participants and 13 mentors from different parts of India. Many of the mentors were book writers. And some of them were movie script writers and story reciters. The name of my mentor was Lavanya Prasad. This year’s theme for the workshop was empathy. Day 1 began with an opening ceremony, there was an introduction Principal’s Message CBSE Affiliation No. 3630132 -M. They taught us what empathy is and how to show empathy in our stories and how to connect our story with the readers. On the second day we were taught how to write stories from different perspectives and they gave us the example of the famous story ‘The Thirsty Crow’ and showed us how the story would be if we wrote from the stone’s, pot’s or water's perspective. On the last day of the workshop, we were asked to write stories from what we had learnt. After lunch there was a closing ceremony where they gave us our participation certificates and we had a group photo. In this workshop I have made many friends and learnt how to write stories in a more effective way. I am happy that I have represented my school in New Delhi and went this far. The students of class 5 were taken to the meteorological department situated in Begumpet. We saw many instruments like the thermometer; wind vane; barometer; etc. We learnt how the officials report the weather. The wind vane tells the speed of the wind and the thermometer checks the temperature of the place. There was also a rain gauge which records the amount of rainfall that takes place in the city. We also saw a weather balloon which is sent up to record the weather condition in the sky. The official also showed us the satellite pictures that are transmitted continuously, on the computer. It was a very fascinating learning for us.

We the students of class 5 went to the India Meteorological Department (IMD),Begumpet also referred to as the Met Department, an agency of the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India. It is the principal agency responsible for meteorological observations, weather forecasting and seismology. We were able to interact with the personnel there who guided us and explained to us how the weather is predicted using different thermometers, instruments and also wind vane, but the most amazing feature of the visit was the rain gauge which was both manual and automatic, it showed us how we can measure the rain in our city.

The students of class7 went to Nehru Zoological Park for field trip as part of our project work. All of us were enthusiastic to see different species of animals, reptiles and migratory birds. We took a safari trip to see Asiatic lions, Bengal Tiger and Sloth Bear. We saw a nocturnal house at the Zoo which artificially reverses night and day for the animals so that nocturnal animals are active. In the Zoo animals are taken care of by the Government. We were happy to see that there were many institutions which adopted some animals in the Zoo and many of my friends also took an oath to adopt any one animal. Through this field trip we understood the importance of animals in the nature and how we can conserve them for our future generations.

Pongal is a traditional festival celebrated in parts of India with different names. On 11th January we celebrated Pongal as a part of our morning assembly. The school ground depicted a small village where we lit a bonfire and the Pongal was prepared by the teachers and class 10 students. The students shared the importance of Pongal festival in the form of a skit and dances were performed by the students of class1 and 5.The students of higher classes flew kites. One of our teachers gave us few instructions for flying kites.

Inter House Competitions are a part of our Co-Curricular activities. One of the most interesting and challenging Inter House Competition is the JAM (Just-A-Minute). This year it was held on 17 November 2017. The fun element of this competition is that the students are given the topics on the spot and thus our words are spontaneous. The topics for JAM this year were ‘ Good food habits’;’ Time management’;’ Joy of giving’. These topics are general but very important topics, they usually ask us to tell about what we do regularly in our life. The winners for this competition of the academic year 2017-18 are 1. As part of Inter House Competitions (IHC), I Advaith Reddy of Class IVA participated in Shloka Recitation. Classes III & IV children participated in this. All children recited many shlokas. But I got 1st prize as I had recited the complete Chapter 6 of the Bhagawat Gita. I felt very happy and my parents appreciated me for my achievement.

Story Telling was conducted in our school as a part of IHC. It improves our speaking skills. Everyone told different stories, I liked all the stories. I told the story called ‘Singa and the Kindness Cubbies’. Everyone made props, as it is part of the competition and it is easy to catch the words and their meanings easily. We got to know different stories. I liked participating in this competition.
