We were able to replate the ciboria and chalices we use in distributing Holy Communion on weekend Masses through the generous donations from the following: Cecilia Bermudez, Cres Payumo, Hilda de la Cruz, Lucy Jacinto, Leticia Palpal-latoc, Angelita Rodelas, Guia Rivera,

Gilbert Galarosa, Caridad Wright, Carmen Casim, Diofe Carbonel, Rosalie Tejada, Susan Sumaylo, and Celia Zapanta. We are very grateful for your generosity in sharing your treasure. God will reward you a hundredfold.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 13: 44-52

Three Lessons Jesus liked Capernaum. There was something special about being

at a place where the water joined the land. The solid shore and the restless sea were like a crossroads where water, land and sky converged. It was a good place to balance the present day against the uncertain future.

On hot days Capernaum’s fishing harbor was also a great place to cool off.

This day’s heat had been suffocating. It was evening and still impos-sible to be indoors. Hundreds of townspeople, among them Jesus, had gone down to the harbor to seek the night breezes which were beginning to blow in from the lake.

Jesus stepped out of his sandals and waded into the cool water. He turned to face the crowd sitting on the grassy bank. Jesus had been preaching to them about the “kingdom.”

One of them said, “How can you say these things? We can’t just drop everything to follow you!”

Jesus smiled at Simon Peter and Andrew who were also sitting on the bank. Pointing toward them, he said, “They did.”

An old fishermen rose to his feet, shaking his accusing finger at Jesus: “How are Simon and Andrew supposed to feed their families when they’ve left their boats in this harbor? They can’t fish if they are going to follow you?”

Jesus said: “When you see the treasure that the Kingdom has for you, the choice to follow is easy.” He continued, trying make them under-stand that there are greater treasures than a good catch of fish. He told them that the kingdom of God is a treasure which offers untold wealth if they would look and see it.

It was the time of the full moon and as it began to rise, full and fat, from across the lake, the moonlight became a silver edge around Jesus’ figure.

Another old man asked, “What is this kingdom you are talking about? What is heaven?”

“Heaven is like this…” Jesus paused, letting their anticipation build. “A man happens to find a treasure hidden in a field. He covers it up again, and is so happy that he goes and sells everything he has, and then goes back and buys that field.”

Jesus then gave them another story about the man looking for fine pearls who, when he finds one, sells everything he has to buy it.

It was still too hot to go home and the crowd seemed eager for more examples, so Jesus told them a fishing story.

“The Kingdom of Heaven is also like this,” he said, “Some fishermen throw their net out in the lake and catch all kinds of fish. When the net is full, they pull it to shore and sit down to divide the fish: the good ones go into the buckets, the worthless ones are thrown away.” Jesus explained it would be like this for people; the good are kept, and the evil ones are thrown away.

When they wanted to hear even more, Jesus told them that every teacher who becomes a disciple in the Kingdom is like a homeowner who takes both new and old things out of his storage room.

THREE LESSONS continued… Jesus waded back ashore letting the grass dry the bottoms of his feet. As he moved among the people he searched their faces, hoping that they had understood that they are like the homeowner. They now have both the old law of the prophets and the new law of the Gospel.

Jesus sat down on the grass in their midst. No one spoke. They just sat together on the bank gazing out at the dark lake letting the peaceful-ness, the breeze and the moonlight wash over them.

Jesus continues to teach us with his wonderful parables as this Sunday’s Gospel invites us to discover the treasure of the kingdom in our own lives. It’s buried in our hearts. We need only to uncover it. When we find it we will gladly give everything we have to possess it.

The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Question: Who is the author of matrimony? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: The intimate partnership of married life and love has been established by the Creator and qualified by His laws, and is rooted in the conjugal covenant of irrevocable personal consent. Hence by that human act whereby spouses mutually bestow and accept each other a relationship arises which by divine will and in the eyes of society too is a lasting one. For the good of the spouses and their off-springs as well as of society, the existence of the sacred bond no longer depends on human decisions alone. For, God Himself is the author of matrimony, endowed as it is with various benefits and purposes. All of these have a very decisive bearing on the continuation of the human race, on the personal development and eternal destiny of the individual members of a family, and on the dignity, stability, peace and prosperity of the family itself and of human society as a whole. By their very nature, the institution of matrimony itself and conjugal love are ordained for the procreation and education of chil-dren, and find in them their ultimate crown. Thus a man and a woman, who by their compact of conjugal love "are no longer two, but one flesh" (Matt. 19:6), render mutual help and service to each other through an intimate union of their persons and of their actions. Through this union they experience the meaning of their oneness and attain to it with growing perfection day by day. As a mutual gift of two persons, this intimate union and the good of the children impose total fidelity on the spouses and argue for an unbreakable oneness between them.

Editor’s Note: Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) presents an overview of the Catholic Church's teachings regarding humanity's relationship to society, with special emphasis on economics, poverty, social justice, culture, science, technology and ecumenism.

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora During my recent vacation to the Philippines, I visited a small tourist island. Since it was a Sun-day, we needed to go to Church which was just within walking distance from where we stayed. Just when we started our walk the rain poured

down heavily and the wind blew violently. In an instant the road was flooded and our umbrellas became useless in the force of the wind. We thought that the church would surely be a safe refuge sparing us from the pouring rain. Sadly, the leaks from the church roof were everywhere. One was right in front of the altar. It was literally raining inside the church that had caused a flooded floor. And suddenly in the middle of the priest’s homily there was a blackout. Luckily, the elec-tricity came on after minutes of darkness. During that time inside the church, I thought of Holy Name Church. How lucky we are to have a magnificent and beautiful edifice. The leaks that we have been dealing here lately are nothing com-pared to what I saw that day. How lucky we are to have constant pow-er and have emergency lights when we have rare blackouts. Moving on to the optimistic side of things and making the nega-tive something positive, the leaky church that I witnessed that day was still lucky to have a roof, compared to those churches whose roofs were blown away by the super typhoon. And as I thought of those churches that I visited that didn’t have a roof due to the typhoon, they were still luckier than those churches that I visited in my hometown province that were completely turned into rubble. They were left with nothing except for the religious statues that were miraculously saved and left unscathed. Here at Holy Name this summer we are dealing with construction of an additional bathroom for the church and the repaving of the school yard. The people I encountered during my “vacation/mission” didn’t even have a church, much less a bathroom and a passable road to begin with. How lucky we are! How blessed indeed. Delightfully, all the nations in the world help these affected areas especially through their monetary contributions. Many countries and institutions have been so generous. And we thank God for these great nations. Reminds me of a story about a guy in the midst of the many con-tributions from different countries asked the question: Which is the greatest nation in the whole world? One guy said: “It’s America; they have contributed so much money to the Third World Countries.” An-other guy said, “The greatest nation is Russia.” “They have the great-est nuclear power in the world.” The other guy objected, “The greatest nation is China. Most of the products now come from China. China is producing more than America and Russia.” The poor pastor from Holy Name said: “The greatest nation in the entire world is doNATION.” If you want to be great make sure you make a “donation” to these victims of natural disasters. Thank you to those people who gave me money just before I left. I visited a lot of churches that were severely damaged by the earthquake, talked to the pastors and gave your money as part of our “donation.” Your donations for our church are much appreciated too. In fact, the church is a great nation as it accepts donations for the second collection this week which is for the Building and Maintenance, dona-tions for our Retired priests, and donations for our Archbishop’s Annu-al Appeal which we hope to complete in the next few weeks. There are many other opportunities to exercise your virtue of generosity in and through the church. So, make your donations now and be a part of this great “nation”.

“Francis: the Man and the Myth,” Wednesday, August 6, 7:00 p.m., Church. Who is ‘the real’ St. Francis? Join the St. Dominic’s community for a fascinating evening lecture given by celebrated author, educator and Dominican priest, Fr. Augustine Thompson, O.P. as he shares insights from his remarkable, award-winning new book, Francis of Assisi: A New Biography. With good humor and keen intellect, Fr. Augustine will pro-vide a fresh perspective on Francis, the legendary patron saint of San Francisco. Throughout the evening, you’ll discover both truths and mis-conceptions about Francis, leaving you with a clearer portrait of the true man behind the legends and popular images. Presented as part of the Dominican Speaker Series.
