  • GENERAL NEWS Sixth Form Parents’ Evening The Sixth Form Parents’ Evening is Thursday 25th February. We hope that parents and carers will be able to come to meet subject teachers to discuss progress and achievements. There is a bus service between the consortium schools and the students will be given all the details. I look forward to seeing you there.

Mrs Wren Director of Sixth Form Important Meeting for Year 10 and 11 D of E participants and their parents/carers next week! This year, just before the start of the expedition season, we are holding a meeting for Year 10 and 11 D of E participants and their parents/carers to share information on the requirements for the expedition, how students will be supervised on expedition and the equipment requirements. We aim to support participants and parents so that they are well prepared and gain the maximum benefit from their expedition experience. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 10th February 6:00pm – 7:00pm in Boothroyd Hall.

You will be able to see all the equipment that is available to hire from the school and also get advice and support on equipment items that you may need to purchase (in particular, suitable footwear).

Mr Dignam and I look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday!

JRCS to grow seeds from space!

The scientists at The Smarties Science Club are preparing to become space biologists and embark on a voyage of discovery by growing seeds that have been into space. In September 2015, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz 44S where they will spend several months in microgravity before returning to Earth in March 2016. The seeds have been sent as part of Rocket Science, an educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency. JRCS will be one of up to 10,000 schools to receive a packet of 100 seeds from space, which they will grow alongside seeds that haven’t been to space and measure the differences over seven weeks. The students won’t know which seed packet contains which seeds until all results have been collected by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and analysed by professional biostatisticians. The out-of-this-world, nationwide science experiment will enable the students to think more about how we could preserve human life on another planet in the future, what astronauts need to survive long-term missions in space and the difficulties surrounding growing fresh food in challenging climates. Rocket Science is just one educational project from a programme developed by the UK Space Agency to celebrate British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s Principia mission to the ISS and inspire young people to look into careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, including horticulture. Attention Year 11s - GCSE Revision For all those who need help structuring and planning revision or for tips and ideas on how to revise, don’t stress! Just come to GCSE Revision Skills Club with me every Friday. Students should meet in the KS4 Pastoral Office at 3:15pm. Look forward to seeing you! Mrs Eades Pastoral Support Assistant (KS4) Returning Library Books All library books must be returned to the Library before the half-term break. The library is open from 8:00am every day, all day including break times, so there is every opportunity to return your library books. If you have lost a library book, you can go straight to ParentPay and pay the fine, (£5 per book – listed as ‘Overdue Library Books’). Once the fine is paid for the lost book, the student’s library account will be cleared of the outstanding book. Paying the fine will prevent letters being sent home to parents concerning owed library books. Students should check their emails as weekly emails are sent out for any library books that are overdue.

  • Thank you in advance to all students who do return their library books before the half-term break.

Ms Osland JRCS Librarian Year 7 PE Rewards Trip

The PE Department rewarded 31 Year 7 students with an afternoon of fun at the Better Extreme Trampoline Park at SportsHouse on Friday 29th January. The students were selected due to excellent behaviour and mind-set in PE lessons, as well as commitment to regular participation in extracurricular activities

The facility boasts an impressive number of trampolines along with a fidget ladder, slack line, foam pits and performance walls so the students were able to show off their acrobatic skills. Congratulations to all the students who were selected to attend the trip and we hope more students will be motivated to attend our next trip in the spring term. Miss Boulton Head of PE

Year 7 Netball result The Year 7 netball girls played a fixture against a well drilled Dagenham Park side on Wednesday 27th January. We took a strong squad of 12 girls to Dagenham Park on our shiny new minibus and came away with a 7-4 result to Jo Richardson. The girls played really well and they continue to train hard together which is being shown in the results. We hope to have more success in the coming weeks and will be competing in the Borough rally in March where I am sure the girls will come away with a medal.

Miss Boulton Head of PE Year 7/8 Girls Football On Monday evening the Year 7/8 girls football team beat Riverside School 4-0. The girls worked excellently together and showed great team spirit. Goals from Anneliese Humbasha (8F), Ellie Mcdonald (7I), Frankie Hendricks (8C) and Maya Quagraine (7H) gave the girls a comprehensive win.

Well done girls! Keep up the great work!

    Student Spotlight

    This week’s featured student

Gabriele Sartauskaite - 12C Gabriele achieved an APS of 45.3 and is

    currently studying the following A-Levels:

    History

    Business

    Sociology

    IFS (AS Level)

    English Language B

    English Literature B

    Maths B

    Science B

    French A

    Music A

    ICT A

    Business (BTEC) D*

    GCSEs achieved in 2015

Gabriele achieved an APS of 45.3 in her GCSEs during the summer of 2015. She decided to continue studying at Jo Richardson Sixth Form due to the high achieving success of previous cohorts which many other local providers could not match. Gabriele then made her A-level choices after having informed discussions with the Sixth Form team. Gabriele knew that she would like to pursue a career in Business Management and decided on taking two specific (Business & IFS) and two non-specific (History & Sociology) A-Level courses required for her chosen field. Gabriele has already researched courses in Business Management and hopes to continue her studies to degree level at the University of Bath.

Gabriele is the first Sixth Form student to have achieved the Golden Seagull this academic year. This is a rare accomplishment and one of which the Sixth Form are extremely proud. She is only one of only three students to have ever achieved this feat.

Since commencing her studies in Key Stage 5, Gabriele has “found the transition from Year 11 to Year 12 challenging due to the additional workload and preparation required outside of lesson. However, the subjects I have taken are really very interesting and engaging.” When asked for her top-tip she suggested “staying focused and manging time effectively; whilst also not to frantically stress and ask for help from teachers.”

“First Sixth Form student to have achieved the Golden Seagull this

    academic year”. “Rare accomplishment”

    “Extremely proud”
