  • TASK 1

Read an interesting story/novel and write its summary. Follow the instructions given

    below:

    1. Heading: Your name, the title of the book, and author on the back of the page.

    2. Title of the novel and the author should also appear prominently on the front of the

    page.

    3. Summary: Briefly (approx. 200 words) summarize in sequence what you’ve read.

This should convey the gist, main conflict, and highlights of the reading. Avoid too

many details! It should not be the blurb from the back of the novel nor a “book

report”; it needs to be a true summary.

    4. Visual Image: What visual images were created in your mind as you read? This

image can be of something that is discussed specifically in the reading, something

that the reading reminded you of, or a picture that conveys any idea or feeling you

got from the reading. Any sort of drawing, painting, or graphic representation is

acceptable. In other words, show me what you imagined; don’t tell me.

    5. Vocabulary: Identify and define ten (10) words or terms that were puzzling or

unfamiliar to you. Give the word, page number, and definition for these words. Be

sure the definition properly defines the word as it is used in your book. If you can’t

locate ten words that you find puzzling, then find a more difficult book.

    6. Connections: Write a paragraph each on:

    1. What part of the book reminded you of any other book and how?

    2. What part of the book reminded you about something that has happened to you?

    3. What part of the book reminded you about something that has happened in the

    world around you?

    7. Presentation (how your project looks): Use a standard size 8.5” x 11” (letter) or

8.5” x 14” (legal) unlined white paper. This will allow you to be unrestricted by

lines, so that you can write sideways, at an angle, upside down, vertically,

horizontally, etc. (Avoid circles, however.) Feel free to use colored pens / gel pens /

type — the more visually appealing, the better!

    8. BE NEAT! Be creative. Teacher must be able to read whatever you write. You may

    type it if you choose.

  • TASK 2 Make a “Diorama” A diorama is a 3-dimensional scene created to illustrate an academic subject, a plot of a story, or an event in history. Suggested topics: Habitats :(Refer your science book-Living things and their environment)

Scene from a story:(Refer Vision VI-Chapter Earthquake (Saranjan’s house after earthquake),What does my clock say?(farm of the village boy)

Dioramas are easy and fun to make. Just follow the instructions below.

You will need: A shoe box or similar sized box (keep lid if you have one.) paper pencils, crayons, markers glue yarn, scraps of material or anything for extra effects.

Step 1. Decide on a theme. (for example; rainforest, oceans, dinosaurs, village life...etc.)

Step 2. Cut a piece a paper to fit the back (inside) of the box and two pieces for the sides. Draw the setting on these pieces of paper. (For example; the rainforest theme would have trees and vines) Color. Paste the setting pieces in the box.

Step 3. Draw and color individual pieces: (for example; the rainforest would have monkeys, snakes, butterflies, parrots, etc.). Decide where you want these to be in the diorama. Some should be back and some forward, some could be hanging from the top or attached to the side. You can use yarn to hang things.

Step 4. Use the extra materials to add the finishing touches. You can use small plastic animals, people, etc.

Have fun. Store for future use by putting the lid on the box.

  • TASK 3

Read the passage below and answer questions below: This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule braying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, he would shake it off and step up!

This he did blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up……. Shake it off and step up………Shake it off and step up!” He repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows were, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought without panic and just kept right on shaking off and stepping up!

It was not long before the old mule battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him……? all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

That’s life! If we actually face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness and self-pity, we can be successful.

    i. Match the meanings with the words in bold: a. drag, pull b. sadness, unhappiness c. felt sorry for d. dig, scoop e. hardship, difficulty f. successfully, victoriously

ii. What happened to the mule? a. It was stuck on a tree. b. It fell into a well. c. It broke his leg.

iii. What did the farmer feel about the mule? a. The farmer felt happy to get rid of the old mule. b. The farmer felt sorry and wanted the mule to be out of despair. c. The farmer was relaxed and contended.

iv. How was the mule feeling initially? a. The mule was calm and quiet. b. The mule was composed. c. The mule was getting out of control.

    v. What did the mule do? vi. Write the best statement that best describes the mule’s feelings. vii. Write the best reason the mule managed to be outside.
