Fire crews got some real-life practice Tuesday
in an abandoned building they intended to use
for training.Doug Bell, chief fire investigator with Nanaimo
Fire Rescue, said crews were called to douse a
fire in a boarded up house on Haliburton Street
just after 5 p.m.
“The house is to be torn down but the owner
donated the building to the fire department for
training,” said Bell. “It looked like somebody had
been sleeping there at some point.”
He said the fire in the small, single-storey
structure was not major and crews will likely
still be able to use the building for training
exercises.Bell said fire officials have not yet determined
whether the fire was deliberately set by squatters

An alternative power source
could be in the winds for Gab-

interested in the Regional Dis-
trict of Nanaimo’s so-called 707
lands, located in the middle of
the island, to develop a small
wind farm that would provide
energy exclusively to Gabriola
residents.Philip Nelson of LandSolutions
Inc., a partner of Zero Emis-
sions, said the site could hold
four to six wind turbines that
would provide 10 megawatts of
energy, enough energy to power
2,600 homes.“We’re just in the preliminary
stages but at this point we feel
Gabriola is a good candidate for
a project like this,” said Nelson.
“One hundred per cent of the
power generated would be used
by Gabriolans and would reduce
power imports by up to 50 per
cent.”Nelson said other benefits of
the project include job creation,
payments to land owners, a sta-
bilized power grid and conserva-
tion. The land, 286 hectares of clear-
cut, has no management plan
attached to it. Zero Emissions
asked that the RDN consider a
memorandum of understanding,
which would give the company a
first right of refusal on the prop-
erty.Erik Andersen, president of

Provincial funding helps centres stay open
and provide programs throughout the day
BY DARRELL BELLAART
THE NEWS BULLETIN
Street life will get a little eas-
ier next month for the worst
off of Nanaimo’s homeless.
Samaritan House and the
New Hope Centre, the city’s
two homeless shelters, are both
getting new funding that will
enable clients to stay warm
and dry both day and night
starting next month.
B.C. Housing is in the final
stages of negotiating new con-
tracts that would enable the
operators of both facilities to
extend their hours of opera-
tion through the day.
Currently, women staying
at Samaritan House, a 20-bed
facility on Nicol Street, are
released into the streets at 9
a.m. The shelter reopens at 3
p.m.Men staying at the 23-bed
New Hope Centre emergency
shelter are turned out at 8:30
a.m., but they can drop in again
for coffee at 10 a.m. and at noon
for lunch. The shelter closes
again at 1 p.m. and reopens for
coffee at 3 p.m., then registra-
tion starts at 4 p.m.
Most shelter clients have life
skills issues and many are bat-
tling mental illness, addictions
or both. And many are either
unemployable or marginally
employable. They often fill the daylight
hours wandering downtown
or in the main library branch –
anywhere they can congregate,
socialize and, in the winter
months, stay warm and dry.
Under the new arrangement,
they would have the option to
stay indoors at either facility
all day.“Right now we have showers
and laundry for them in the
morning, and they would have
access to that and they could
meet with their case workers
as well,” said Rob Anderson,
New Hope shelter manager.
He said under the existing
contract, it’s actually costing
the Salvation Army money to
staff the shelter. A new con-
tract takes effect April 1.
“The hope now is with the
funding we should be in a
break-even arrangement,”
Anderson said.
George Weir, Samaritan
House shelter manager, said
many of the women staying at
the 20-bed facility spend their
days wandering the streets,
with breaks for coffee and
lunch at the New Hope Centre.

■ COQUITLAM COLLEGE, SCHOOL, COMMUNITY CENTRE OFF LIMITS TODAY‘Specific threat’ closes collegeLARA GERRITSTHE TRI-CITY NEWS (Coquitlam)
Douglas College, Pinetree secondary school and the Pinetree community centre are closed today following athreat on the college’s David Lam campus. But police and college officials are releasing little information about the source, nature or target of the threat made to the RCMP.“ I nv e s t i g a t o r s h av erequested that I not release any details,” Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk said yesterday afternoon.“Right now, we’re right in the middle of the investiga-tion and we’d be really inef-fective if we disclose whatwe’re doing.”
D o u g l a s C o l l e g e announced the closure in apress release sent out shortlyafter lunch yesterday. The col-lege was made aware of the threat Wednesday, accordingto the release, and, as a pre-cautionary measure, decided to close the campus as of 11p.m. last night. All students and staff weredirected to stay away from the campus until further notice.Notices of the closure was spread via information on the college’s website (www.douglascollege.ca.), its infor-mation line (604-527-5452) and signs posted on college doors.
Classes at the college, as well as Pinetree secondary, remained in session yester-day.“The threat that was received basically had to do with [Friday],” college presi-
dent Susan Witter said. “Weobviously took this threat very seriously and took the opportunity to close the cam-pus, obviously because of the safety of our employees and students.”More than 1,000 students and employees would nor-mally be at the college on aFriday, she said.
RCMP did not recommend the closure of any facilities. The decision to close Pine-tree secondary was made by School District 43 officials at about 2 p.m. yesterday “as aprecaution in light of safetyconcerns” and notices were to go home with students, said spokeswoman Cheryl Quinton. When asked about how missed classes will be madeup, she said, “We don’t havethat level of detail yet. Wewill work on a plan and for now, we’re just getting theword home with the stu-dents.”
Closure of Pinetree com-munity centre – adjoining to the secondary school – was made by the city manager and staff.“We’re doing this strict-ly as a precautionary mea-sure; we haven’t been asked to close by the RCMP,” said Edie Doepker, Coquitlam’s manager of parks and leisurefacilities.
Community centre staff will be redeployed and notic-es will be posted on doors, she said. Some Douglas College students wondered why theywere still in classes yesterday despite the threat.

four to six wind turbines that
would provide 10 megawatts of
energy, enough energy to power

stages but at this point we feel
Gabriola is a good candidate for
a project like this,” said Nelson.
“One hundred per cent of the

Provincial funding helps centres stay open
and provide programs throughout the day
BY DARRELL BELLAART
THE NEWS BULLETIN
Street life will get a little eas-
ier next month for the worst
off of Nanaimo’s homeless.
Samaritan House and the
New Hope Centre, the city’s
two homeless shelters, are both
getting new funding that will
enable clients to stay warm
and dry both day and night
starting next month.
B.C. Housing is in the final
stages of negotiating new con-
tracts that would enable the
operators of both facilities to
extend their hours of opera-
tion through the day.
Currently, women staying
at Samaritan House, a 20-bed
facility on Nicol Street, are
released into the streets at 9
a.m. The shelter reopens at 3

shelter are turned out at 8:30
a.m., but they can drop in again
for coffee at 10 a.m. and at noon
for lunch. The shelter closes
again at 1 p.m. and reopens for
coffee at 3 p.m., then registra-
tion starts at 4 p.m.
Most shelter clients have life
skills issues and many are bat-
tling mental illness, addictions
or both. And many are either
unemployable or marginally
employable. They often fill the daylight
hours wandering downtown
or in the main library branch –
anywhere they can congregate,
socialize and, in the winter
months, stay warm and dry.
Under the new arrangement,
they would have the option to
stay indoors at either facility
all day.“Right now we have showers
and laundry for them in the
morning, and they would have
access to that and they could
meet with their case workers
as well,” said Rob Anderson,
New Hope shelter manager.
He said under the existing
contract, it’s actually costing
the Salvation Army money to
staff the shelter. A new con-
tract takes effect April 1.
“The hope now is with the
funding we should be in a
break-even arrangement,”
Anderson said.
George Weir, Samaritan
House shelter manager, said
many of the women staying at
the 20-bed facility spend their
days wandering the streets,
with breaks for coffee and
lunch at the New Hope Centre.
