The insulating component is NANOISOLA a material wecall Nano Silicasol XL100. Passage of thermal energythrough an insulating material is an attempt by hotter, fastvibrating molecules to transfer energy to cooler, slowvibrating molecules in order to reach equilibrium.

Introduction Our Technology

It occurs in three ways; solid conductivity, gaseousconductivity, and radiative (infrared) transmission. Thetotal of these is the thermal conductivity of the material.Our material, is by far, the world's worst conductor ofthermal energy and the world's best insulator.

Thermal conduction through a material is hindered by the tiny size ofthe connections between the particles making up the conductionpath. The solids that are present consist of very small particles linkedin a three-dimensional network (with many "dead-ends"). Therefore,thermal transfer through the solid portion occurs through a verycomplicated maze and is not very effective. Air and gas in thematerial can inherently also transport thermal energy, but the gasmolecules within the matrix experience that is known as theKnudsen Effect and the exchange of energy is virtually eliminated.Conduction is limited because the "tunnels" are only the size of themean-free path for molecular collisions, smaller than a wave of light.Molecules collide with the solid network as frequently as they collidewith each other.

Because of the complex and often corrosive environments in

which plants operate, corrosion has been a serious problem,

with a significant impact on the operation.

‘Corrosion under insulation is difficult to findbecause of the insulation cover that masks theproblem until it is too late.’

Corrosion under insulation is a real threat to the on-stream

reliability of many of today’s plants. This type of corrosion

can cause failures in areas that are not normally of a primary

concern to an inspection program. The failures are often the

result of localized corrosion and not general wasting over a

large area. These failures can be catastrophic in nature or at

least have an adverse economic effect in terms of downtime

and repairs.

Corrosion under insulation is difficult to find because of the

insulation cover that masks the problem until it is too late. It

is expensive to remove the insulation, particularly if asbestos

is involved. There are a number of methods used today to

inspect for corrosion under insulation. The main ones are

profile radiography, ultrasonic spot readings, and insulation

removal.

NANOISOLA offers the benefit of a combinationcorrosion prevention coating and insulation in a singleproduct. The Nano-Composite in NANOISOLA has alow thermal conductivity (0.068 W/mK) and is alsohydrophobic, which gives the product the dual ability ofresisting corrosion.

NANOISOLA offers the only clear coating that preventsCUI and allows visual and ultrasound inspectionswithout need for removal, thus saving downtime, cost ofreplacement, and personnel time.

How Does NANOISOLA Prevent Corrosion & CUI?

The effectiveness of NANOISOLA in preventing Corrosion UnderInsulation (CUI) while providing excellent thermal insulation wasdifficult to create… but it is easy to explain.

First:Hydrophobic refers to the tendency of a substance to repel water. Thenanocomposite which constitutes approximately 70% of the dry filmthickness of Nansulate is highly hydrophobic.

Due to the fact that NANOISOLA adheres directly to the substratebeing insulated, it coats the substrate with the hydrophobic particleswhich act to continuously repel any attempt at moisture build-up andno moisture means excellent rust prevention and corrosion protection.

How Does NANOISOLA Prevent Corrosion & CUI?

Second: NANOISOLA adheres directly to the substrate, bonding with it. There is no space for air and the life giving oxygen that rust needs to grow.

PLUS: The hydrophobic performance characteristic of the nanocomposite in NANOISOLA also repel moisture from the coating itself, effectively creating a moisture free barrier against the pipe or tank or piece of equipment being insulated. The severe service environments of coastal or offshore facilities, with the constant salt air and salt spray can destroy equipment rapidly. The hydrophobic performance qualities of NANOISOLA repel the attempt by salt water to penetrate through to the substrate, preventing rust and corrosion caused by the severe service conditions encountered by petroleum refineries, supertankers, and many other industrial facilities.
