Bi-weekly updates on the Nantucket Real Estate Market and Nantucket news issued by the Nantucket Association of Real Estate Brokers.

TRANSCRIPT

It’s incredibly easy to sit high atop the

perch of age and dismiss the youth of

today as immature slackers. And given

that I’m not entirely sure which of those

groups wants to claim me as a current

member in good standing, I’m going to go ahead and offer

a neutral party observation on one such youth, a young man

named Vincent Veilleux.

Vincent — or is it Vince? He readily admits to rarely car-

ing which name people call him by – is a native of Maine

who relocated with to Nantucket with his mother twelve

years ago, at the ripe old age of ten. And in case you’re

keeping score at home, that means he’s twenty-two today,

so still in that “slacker youth” demographic. But read on

before you start making judgments.

A graduate of Nantucket High School, Vince is one of

those kids – I guess I’m giving away the fact that I’m older

than he – who is a student of life, and that

dedication to education has made him far

more mature than many people twice his

age, and at least one person who is seven-

teen years his elder. Constantly on the

search for ways to further his own personal education,

Vince enrolled in an acting class taught by local thespian

and director Meredith Martin. “Meredith really poured her

heart into working with me, and I responded positively.”

The result of that positive response to being bitten by the

acting bug launched Veilleux on a trajectory that landed

him on the Nantucket stage multiple times. His first show

was Oliver, directed by Laura Gallagher Byrne, and he’s

been a Nantucket theatrical mainstay ever since. This sum-

mer finds him again on the Nantucket stage, performing as

the ever-childlike Peter Pan, a role he played this past win-

ter on the island, too.

Anew intellectual gathering on

Nantucket bills itself as “an idea

whose time has come.” Given the island’s

history, The Nantucket Project might rather

be an idea whose time has come again.

The project, the latest venture by Tom

Scott, will bring together thinkers, artists

and attendees for three days in September

and October. The aim, according to the pro-

ject’s Web site, is to “showcase ideas that

help us or have made us re-think through

“It’s about learning, growing, and being

the founder of Nantucket Nectars and Plum

At the beach end of Madaket Road are two things

everyone should experience at least once during

the summer on Nantucket: the sunset and Millie’s.

The tuna tacos this summer at this latest incarnation

of the former Westender restaurant are said to be

amazing, the music and voice of guitar player/singer

Jess Clemons on Thursday nights deliciously sooth-

ing,and they still make the legendary Madaket

Mystery rum drink at the bar.

Off Polpis Road, opposite Quaise Road, is a dirt

track leading up to Altar Rock. Just beyond the Cliff

Road end of Crooked Lane, there are historic slabs of

granite jutting from the ground overlooking Maxey

Pond listing the original settlers of Nantucket.

All of these amazing island locations are easily

reachable by car, bike or moped. But for those without

these modes of conveyance or, for people seeking a

hands-free island traveling solution, there is

Nantucket’s seasonal bus system, The Wave, operated

by the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority. Riding

public transportation, however, still carries a certain

stigma for many people, which often prevents them

from ever setting foot inside a shuttle bus.

Old Dog, New Tricks

Iam not a formally-trained journalist, but because I am a

writer by profession and an assistant sailing coach for enjoy-

ment, I do the weekly write-ups for the Nantucket High School

sailing team. Recently, I noticed that the article I’d submitted

was edited more†heavily than I was accustomed to, and when

I mentioned this to one of the members of the sailing team, she

explained to me that a journalistic lead should tell the entirety

of the story in the first paragraph, and then develop the story in

subsequent paragraphs. I tried her method the next week, and

the editor replied that it was “much betterÆ”†In other words,

this†old dog learned himself a new trick.

You see what I did there? I just told you pretty much what

this column is going to be about, and now I’m going to flesh it

out for you and develop the story. And, with any luck, I’ll

end†up making a point about real estate, too. As an aside, it’s

kind of a meta-journalistic thing,†because I’m talking about

what it is I’m actually demonstrating. But I digress, and

that’s†frowned upon by real journalists.

As a member of the Nantucket High School sailing team

coaching staff, I’m fortunate†enough to deal with some really,

really amazing young people. One such person is a young woman

named Ashleigh Ingliss, who does many things better than I. For

one —†and don’t†tell her this, as it could ruin my whole authori-

ty thing —†she sails better than I do. She’s†also a lot smarter than

I am, which she already knows. In case you need proof of that,

consider our respective college choices. I am a proud graduate of

the University of Texas. In the fall, Ashleigh will be going to

Harvard. At least Texas has a better football team.

And one other thing Ashleigh does better than I do is jour-

nalism. She’s co-editor of the†Veritas, the award-winning stu-

dent newspaper at Nantucket High School. It was that experi-

ence that gave her the knowledge about writing journalistic

leads that she imparted to me and which I used in my own arti-

cle, the article which the sports editor told me was much better

than my previous attempts.

I’ve reached the age where my ego is firmly entrenched, and

when someone tries to tell me†something that might improve

what I think I’m already pretty good at, I tend to get a little†bristly

about it. But the funny thing is, when I put the ego aside and let

people who know what they’re talking about impart their wisdom,

I oftentimes find that it improves whatever†skill it is I thought I

had mastered. This whole journalism thing is a perfect example. A

young woman who is literally half my age —†actually younger

than that, if we’re being†honest with ourselves —†is offering me

advice on how to do my job better. The nerve of†her! But true to

form, she was right. Funny how that works.

The thing about the lesson I learned here is that it’s applica-

ble to a lot of life situations, and†home ownership is no excep-

tion. A lot of us think we know what’s best when it comes

to†our own homes. After all, we’re the ones who live in the

house, so it makes sense that we’d†know what’s best for that

house. Disregard the fact that we might not be builders

or†electricians or plumbers or designers or whatever else. We

know what’s best.

Folks, you don’t have to be a Harvard grad (or even have

one advising you) to see where†this is headed. When it comes

to building projects, go with the pros. And as I have said

repeatedly in this space, Nantucket is loaded with pros. No

matter what the task, our little island has got somebody who

specializes in it, from start to finish. Looking to buy a house?

I don’t care how many times you’ve done it before, it always

benefits you to have someone†who knows the local market

intimately —†somebody who spends their days studying

the†market —†to guide you in your search. You know what

you want in a house, but they can†help you find it.

And the same goes for construction. If you’ve got a building

project on your radar, don’t†go it alone. Have some ideas

about what you want, but let the pros advise you on the best

way to get it done. There are a gazillion little tricks and tips

that can make the whole process a lot easier and less expensive

for you, so put that ego aside and let the pros guide you. And

if all else fails, see if you can find Ashleigh. The girl knows

what she’s talking about. Trust†me on this one.

Even using the subway and commuter rail service

in urban areas on the mainland seems to be more

palatable for most folks than riding The Bus.

“I think the key, and we struggle with this a lot, is

getting people to take that first step and ride the bus

just once and see how reliable it is,” said Paula Leary,

Administrator of the Nantucket Regional Transit

Authority.

During the five-month 2010 season on Nantucket,

246,974 people stepped onto NRTA’s nine buses for

job commutes, leisure or during their visits to the

island. For the first six weeks of NRTA’s 2011 season,

Leary reports that ridership is up seven percent over

last year during the same time. In addition to the

usual motivators of traffic congestion , the infamous

parking situation downtown, and high gas prices,

Leary believes that NRTA’s re-branding of its shuttle

bus system into The Wave, complete with a logo

change and blue ocean wave motif for all the buses,

is getting people excited about riding the bus on

Nantucket. And, a smart phone app utilizing global

positioning satellites that tracks the location of each

bus as it moves along its route isn’t hurting either, she

surmises.

But don’t take Leary’s word for it: go ride The

Wave yourself. The Wave travels out to some of

Nantucket’s best spots and really takes the commuter

drudgery out of the equation.

“Certainly Surfside Beach, people like to go to

’Sconset and they like to take the Polpis route at least

one way, certainly the various historic sites, the life-

saving museum,” said Leary of some of the more

popular stops. “The workers and residents use it to

get into town to work, which may not be fun, but it’s

what their need is. Families like Jetties Beach. Alot of

people will do lunch in ’Sconset, walk around, go to

the lighthouse, that kind of thing.”

Unlike most bus experiences on the mainland, a

Wave bus offers a communal, relaxed atmosphere,

where passengers often converse with each other,

sharing their island experiences or how their days are

going.

And, it’s relatively inexpensive. One-way trips

cost $1 or $2 — 50¢ and $1, respectively, for handi-

cap riders and those 65 and older. NRTA sells a vari-

ety of passes including full season; $80, 30-day; $50,

commuter; $70, 65 and older, and students; $40. For

those on vacation, short-term Wave passes are also

available including one-day; $7, three-day; $12 and

seven-day; $20.

For $4 roundtrip, you can ride the Madaket Bus,

which leaves from Broad Street in front of the

Nantucket Historical Association’s Whaling Museum

on the hour, arriving in Madaket, in front of Millie’s,

in about 20 minutes. Once out in Madaket, most of

the beaches are within walking distance. Millie’s is at

that last stop and the quaint West End Market next

door sells beach necessities, including plenty of cold

beverages.

The Wave runs two direct beach buses from the

Greenhound bus station on Washington Street down-

town, one to Jetties Beach and the other out Surfside

Beach for $2 roundtrip, but these pre-packaged beach

experiences are not for everyone or every day of the

summer. Use The Wave to find island beaches, but

also use it to explore the rest of the island.

• Altar Rock is Nantucket’s second highest hill at

108 feet above sea level. Ride The Wave’s ’Sconset

via Polpis Road bus, get off at the Quaise Road-Altar

Rock Road stop and follow a wide dirt road south

into the moors. During most of July, low-bush blue-

berries are plentiful along this and other roads leading

to Altar Rock, so bring a container for your picking.

Follow the road straight up to the top and take in an

incredible 360-degree view of the island with water

visible on three sides.

• Also on the ’Sconset via Polpis Road Route is the

Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum at the Lifesaving

Museum stop and the UMass Boston Nantucket Field

Station, both open to the public. The museum is filled

with artifacts and exhibits detailing the role of shore-

based lifesaving stations around the island. The field

station, crisscrossed with nature trails, is a destination

for eco-tourists seeking knowledge on the island’s

natural world, a biological resource base for students

and professors and community center for local events

and poetry slams.

• Back on the Madaket Route

again heading out to Madaket, get

off at the Maxey Pond stop, walk

west down the bike path and take a

right after crossing Madaket Road.

This dirt road runs north along the

east shore of the pond almost to

Cliff Road where you’ll find a his-

toric site with the two granite

markers listing Nantucket’s origi-

nal settlers. To get back to town,

retrace your steps and catch the bus

at its inbound Millbrook Road stop

on the bike path.

• Although there is currently no

bus in The Wave system running

out the length of Hummock Pond

Road to all of its’ delights, by rid-

ing the Miacomet Loop bus with

your bike and an island map, any-

thing is possible. All of The Wave’s

buses have racks for two bikes on

their front bumpers, so bring your

bike on this bus and get off at the

Raceway Drive/Somerset Lane

stop. From there, you can easily

bike down Somerset Lane, go left

onto West Miacomet Road and get

down to Miacomet Beach. Or you

can take the first right off Somerset

Lane after the Surfing Hydrangea

Nursery, ride the sandy, bumpy

Smooth Hummocks Road past one

of Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm’s

fields — but not right after it rained

— out to Bartlett Road. Go left on the pavement to

reach this wondrous farm stand or right to find Cisco

Brewers near the end of this road on left. From the

intersection of Bartlett Farm and Hummock Pond

roads, go left (southwest) for Hummock Pond Farm,

East Coast Seafood, the Land Bank’s Gardner prop-

erty and Cisco Beach at the end of the road.

What you’ve just read is but a sampling of the spe-

cial Nantucket places accessible by The Wave. Don’t

let the bus-riding season pass you by without explor-

ing at least one or two of these amazing routes offered

by NRTA. A visit to their Web site at

www.nrtawave.com /should be your first stop before

riding the bus.

The irony doesn’t hit you initially when you’re talk-

ing to Vince about playing the part of the leader of the

Lost Boys who refuses to grow up. After all, Peter Pan

is the perpetual child, arguably the poster boy for the

whole slacker generation label. So on the one hand –

that totally judgmental hand – it makes perfect sense

that a member of the slacker generation would play the

part. But Vince? Like I said, he’s anything but a slack-

er. Just talk to him about his work and you’ll see what

I mean.

“It’s an honor to play this role,” he said to me

recently. “You’re the one the kids are looking at, the

one that makes their eyes get big. I was walking at

Children’s Beach not long ago, and a kid kept staring

at me. His mother walked up and said, ‘The magic’s

still alive.’ He’d seen the show in the winter and

remembered me as Peter Pan. That’s powerful stuff.”

And despite his obvious talents and the joy he is able

to bring to audiences, he is quick to give credit to oth-

ers. “Laura Gallagher Byrne is a fantastic director,” he

said. “She’s a huge inspiration to me.”

In the role of Peter Pan, there is the pesky little fly-

ing thing that actors have to get around, and this pro-

duction is no exception. Theatergoers will see Peter

Pan fly through the air with the greatest of ease,

though behind the scenes there’s a lot of work going

on. “My good friend Kevin Mohler is in charge of the

flying crew, and I trust him completely. So there’s not

too much fear, really. It was a little awkward feeling at

first, but I’ve gotten used to it.”

You can prod Vince and poke him and try to bait

him all you want, but you’re not going to get him to

pat himself on the back. Here he is, playing the lead in

a show that sold out nearly every performance this

past winter, and he’s as humble as the day is long. A

sign of maturity? I’m thinking so. “The biggest thing

for me,” he said, “is the work itself. The one-on-one

involvement. And seeing the director’s creative vision

come to fruition. That’s the biggest thing for me.

That’s where my heart is.”

Vince has been something of a journeyman actor,

trying, as he said, to “chase the dream” in New York

City for a couple of years in his late teens. “I was total-

ly naïve about the whole thing,” he admitted. At sum-

mer’s end, however, he is considering a return trip to

the Great White Way, but he plans to look at Broadway

through the lens of maturity that he’s developed. “I

plan to audition, but this is not about chasing any

dream. It’s about learning this time around. I look at

auditions as work – just as much work as a production

– and I can learn a lot from each audition. I’ve learned

a lot since the last time I was in New York. For one

thing, I’ve learned to listen more.”

A lot of us older folks might be able to learn a lot

from Vince if we’d learn to listen more, too.

Especially to him.

Thoughtful vacation

The Sconset School of Opinion was the brainchild

of Frederic C. Howe, whose brain, certainly, had

more than a few children during his lifetime. Howe

was a Pennsylvania-born political reformer, universi-

ty lecturer, author and member of Franklin Delano

Roosevelt’s Washington.

In announcing the school’s institution in 1922,

Howe wrote a letter to the Inquirer and Mirror declar-

ing he would gather “together what is probably the

most distinguished group of men in the field of opin-

ion that have ever been brought together in this coun-

try.” He described days of three-hour sessions from 9

a.m. to noon and evenings reserved for “roundtable

discussion of the lectures of the day.”

The retreat ran Sept. 3 to Sept. 10 in its first year,

with “men who are leaders in their respective realms

of thought, as well as advanced students from the uni-

versities” pitching up in tents and cottages in Sconset.

During the school’s run, writers Sinclair Lewis and

Eugene O’Neill, philosophers Mortimer Adler and

Horace Kallen, artists Paul Robeson and Blance

Yurka, and others made the trek to Sconset to spend a

week in September exchanging ideas and stimulating

discussion.

Exercise of the mind wasn’t the only activity at the

school. “Provisions have been made for golf, tennis,

and recreation, as many of those who are coming are

treating the school as a vacation period,” Howe wrote

in his letter to the local paper.

Skeptical reception

The school established a home in Tavern-on-the-

Moors, a former barn. As Lee Rand Burne wrote in a

1993 essay in Historic Nantucket: “Shortly after

World War I, the village of Sconset was startled to

witness changes taking place in an old barn located

near the firehouse, where Charlie Pitman's livery sta-

ble was being transformed into an auditorium and

lecture hall, known as the Tavern-on-the-Moors.”

Its arrival in the village wasn’t, however, met with

universal warmth, with a skeptical reception coming

from local and national sources.

There was, according to a report in The Baltimore

Sun at the time, “undoubtedly a pinkish tinge in the

crowd.” The New Republic reported “the liberal turn

of mind” of those “educators, writers, etc. … (who)

will give informal lectures and lead roundtable dis-

cussions on history, economics, labor, art, and litera-

ture.”

In a letter to The Inquirer and Mirror, Anne

Paddock Ford voiced concerns of about the school as

a breeding ground for pacifism, socialism and radical

conspiracy. A New York Times article in 1922 warned

“the missionaries of liberal opinion … that there are

few more accomplished character-readers and iro-

nists than the ’Sconset fishermen.”

Time and familiarity dulled the edge of resistance

to the school, although attendees and speakers main-

tained a level of oddity in their pursuits if not their

politics. As Burne wrote, “One visitor reported: ‘In

the supposedly radical gathering place they were fair-

ly eating up a lecture on The Soul of France. On the

afternoon of the worst storm in years, a hundred of

them were hearing a discussion on “How We Think,”

yes, and paying good money for the privilege!’”

Retreat in decline

That first session in 1922 sparked a successful run

for the school for much of the rest of the decade. The

onset of the Great Depression, however, brought the

experiment to a halt. As Burne noted, the school’s

undoing was hastened by the decline of lengthy sum-

mer vacations and Howe’s flight to Washington in

1932. That year, Howe went south to serve as con-

sumers counsel in the Agricultural Adjustment

Administration. He held the post until 1935 when he

became an adviser to Henry Wallace, the secretary of

Agriculture.

As the ’30s wore on, Howe’s financial standing

dove, leading to the foreclosure of the reformer’s

Sconset property. The school’s home disappeared

and, 18 years after that first summer, the school’s

founder was gone, as well. On Aug. 3, 1940, Howe

died of heart failure at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in

Oak Bluffs.

In his obituary in The New York Times a day after

his death, Howe was remembered as “an exponent of

liberal thought and action” and “an aggressive cham-

pion of the ‘average man’ – a friend of the masses.”

Yet Howe seemed to have sensed much earlier that

even an aggressive champion could not be a one-man

revolution. In “The Confessions of a Reformer,” pub-

lished in 1925, he wrote: “I have more to learn than

the time that is left suffices for. Yet I realize that only

a beginning is possible to any man.”

Now, some 71 years after Howe’s death, The

Nantucket Project will populate the island for a time

with some of today’s great mind – including histori-

an and social commentator Henry Louis Gates, jour-

nalist James Fallows and Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

They and those in attendance may follow Howe and

his associates, and they and the project itself may too

embark on their own beginnings.
