PREAMBLE:

We architects are supposed to decide architecture and dictate designs. Thinking

deep, are we the real designers or are there factors which enable us to design?

What are the pre-conditions for an appropriate structure in a given context? What

factors determine the evolution of architecture?

Much before people became professional architects designing the buildings, nature

has been the architect of buildings, evolving context specific structures conforming

to local culture, materials, technology and such others. Among these, climate has

always played a major role, which people could not control in anyway. Accordingly

much of architecture, both of the past and of recent times, evolved and revolved

around the conditions of climate. However as materials, construction and

technology gained increasing control on matters of nature, today we are capable

of erecting any kind of building anywhere in the world, with indoor climate

completely controlled by us, and no more by nature.

However, is this capacity a matter to be proud of? Not really, for the way we are

building today has led to total dependency on technology to provide light, control

air and cool the buildings. Over the last few decades, we have realized there is a

limit to growth and end to fossil fuel. We have realized that we are causing energy

crisis, green house gas emissions, climate change and the irreparable damage to

our Mother Earth.

Now the time has come for a (Re)-evolution of the design world, (Re)-cognising the

role of climate once again, where creativity in the construction industry can be (Re)-

rooted in the local climate.

TROPHY REQUIREMENTS:

A: Analyse local climate:

Choose the region where your institute is located, collect climatic data and analyse

the data to understand climatic conditions. This could also include few related local

contexts like materials and technology, however focus should be on climate.

B. Develop design criteria:

From the analysis of the climate, arrive at design parameters and construction

criteria that can lead to climatically appropriate architecture. Sketches and details

from the range of local buildings can be added to demonstrate these parameters.

This section may focus on designing with nature in general and designing for climate

in specificities.

C: Select a building:

Choose any one single building; small or big; standing alone or within a group of

buildings; built at any time during the past, recent past or modern times; which

adequately illustrates design ideas rooted in local climate. Explain its location and

context, justifying the selection. Document the building with adequate drawings,

sketches and photos. The building might be historic or contemporary with electro-

mechanical technologies, but should amply illustrate the design principles evolved

in section B, satisfying the criteria for designing with climate and nature.

D. Critique the building:

Apply your understanding of designing for climate to the chosen project, enumerate

the climate friendly features of the project in detail and prove how on a detailed

analysis, your chosen building is an apt example for designing with climate and for

climate, creating a holistic experience of architecture.

SPECIFICATIONS :

The presentation panel should have a minimum of 60% of graphical data and

the rest may be textual .

Presentation should be in landscape only.

Panel: One 8’ x 4’ panel will be provided

Presentation: Maximum number of sheets not to exceed 15 A1

This can either be in single panel format or part panel format

Single panel

This mode of presentation requires the entire 8’ x 4’ panel to be covered

which would be considered equivalent to 6 A1 sheets. The remaining 9 A1

sheets may be overlaid on the panel.

The Shape and size of the overlays on the single panel shall be left to the

discretion of the participants.

Part Panel

This presentation is possible in two forms either covering 2/3rd of the panel

or1/3rd

A 2/3rd panel would be considered equivalent to 4 A1 sheets, along with

which a maximum of 11 A1 sheets in a calendar and / or overlay format is

allowed.

National Association of Students of Architecture

Nari Gandhi trophy 2015 - 16 (Re)evolution

A 1/3 rd panel would be considered equivalent to 2 A1 sheets, along with

which a maximum of 13 A1 sheets in a calendar and / or overlay format is

allowed.

Each overlay (does not require a logo) would be considered as one A1 sheet

irrespective of the size not exceeding A1. (The overlay must be cut from an

A1sheet).

No part of the presentation shall spill out the 8’ x 4’ panel.

All individual sheets and panels shall have NASA logo

Scale models are not allowed.

2 copies of the CD containing the soft copy of the entire report, sheets along

with the A.V.Presentation must be submitted. One of these is for the N.I.P.C.

archives and the other for the use of the college in A.V. Presentation. The 2nd

CD will be returned to the respective college. College code will be

mentioned in both the CD’S but one out of the two CD’s must also contain

name of the college.

Jury members shall shortlist the colleges for A.V. presentation. Time given for

the short listed entries shall not exceed 15 minutes. No college shall reveal its

identity.

NASA logo in proper specification should feature on right hand bottom

corner.

Note: the identity/name of the participating college should not feature in any

way on any of the presentation sheets/A.V.

Two identical copies of a Report (hard bound) not exceeding 20 A4 pages

that give an entire overview of the project should accompany the submission.

The report should feature the NASA logo appropriately on the cover page

and on each page of the report. Both copies should contain the college

code and name of the project on the cover. However, only one copy should

have the name of the College featured on it.
