COVID-19 has impacted commu-nities greatly this year but the shops in Narrandera are determined Christmas will be a festive affair.

Narrandera Shire Council, the local Business Group and the Narrandera Argus have joined forces to stage a Christmas in Narrandera promotion to encour-age locals to shop locally, and visitors from neighbouring towns to come and enjoy what the town has to offer.

While it’s a promotional cam-paign to create awareness beyond shire boundaries, it also targets local people to enjoy what their town and its business community has to offer.

It’s never been more important than this year to support local businesses. There’s a wide range of trendy boutique stores certain

to impress visitors as well as the staple stores that cater for everyday needs.

This year they have gone out of their way to ensure there is plenty of stock to ensure your shopping experience is one you won’t forget.

As an added bonus there’s also shopping vouchers and in-store promotions to enjoy.

Then there’s Narrandera’s spectacular Christmas tree in the main street if you stay until dark-ness falls.

When shopping is finished visitors and locals can enjoy food and a cuppa at local eateries and then take in some of Narrand-era’s tourist attractions.

NARRANDERA Shire businesses have suffered the same restrictions and difficulties as many others across regional NSW during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, a recent independent Vibe survey has revealed some businesses have weathered the storm better than others, with some re-spondents indicating their trading has in fact been better during the last eight months or so than in normal times.

Further and on a positive note, it can be revealed 40 per cent of respondents believed their sales would increase over the next six to 12 months while 10 per cent indicated a likely sales decrease.

As we approach the festive season and Christmas, it is more important than ever all Shire residents respond to the call to ‘Buy Local’, a message

jointly supported by Narrandera Shire Council and the Narrandera Business Group.

Additionally, the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia (COSBOA) has strongly promoted the ‘Go Local First’ campaign as an initiative to encourage local residents to make their purchases where possible in their local area.

The Vibe survey also revealed important other aspects of busi-ness operation in Narrandera with responses providing important data to assist Council’s Economic De-velopment team with ideas on how to assist business across the Shire.

The full survey results will be presented to Councillors at the December Briefing Session and made public in due course.

At the national level, the Austra-lian Government has released its

Economic Recovery Plan in recogni-tion of the need for all business to em-bark on the path to recovery and this information can be accessed at www.ourcomeback.gov.au.

The whole Shire has been fortu-nate that only one case of COVID-19 was reported earlier in the year, so people have been able to get on with their lives under fewer restrictions and impositions than experienced by our city cousins.

There are many positive projects emerging for Narrandera to assist the recovery and the Mayor, Coun-cillors and all staff join together to wish all residents a safe and happy Christmas with family and friends and best wishes for a pros- perous and healthy 2021.

CHRISTMAS is a wonderful time of the year for families to get together and celebrate and the Narrandera Business Group (NBG), in conjunction with the Narrandera Shire Council, is organising a Christmas in Narrandera shopping promotion.

Since its inception in 2012, the NBG has conducted a Christmas fun fair in East Street but this had to be post- poned this year due to COVID.

Late night shopping begins in Nar-randera on December 4 (businesses can opt to open for extended hours earlier if they wish) and the Business Group, in lieu of the annual Christmas Fair and Markets, has organised a number of promotions to encourage shop-pers to shop local in Narrandera this Christmas:

    • This Christmas Shopping in Nar-randera catalogue to be inserted in the Narrandera Argus on Thursday,

November 26 and the Leeton Irrigator on Friday, November 27.

    • Late night shopping on Fridays leading up to Christmas – December 4, December 11 and December 18. Local businesses are encouraged to participate by extending their opening hours and to organise entertainment or special promotions to coincide with these nights.

A Monster Christmas stocking is up for grabs and will be on display in the shop window of the vacant shop (which was once the old Landmark shop) adjoining the newsagency. It will contain items that have been donated by businesses in Narrandera.

The winning ticket will be drawn on Saturday, December 19 and the winner will take home all the donated items in the monster stocking.

Participating businesses will display a sign in their shop window and give

shoppers a ticket for every sale over $10. Shoppers are to write their name

and phone number on tickets and place them in the barrel that will be located at Bendigo Bank Narrandera branch. These tickets will also be used to draw the following:

    • $100 voucher Friday December 4 – donated by Bendigo Bank

    • $100 voucher Friday December 11 – donated by Narrandera Business Group

    • Christmas stocking – Saturday December 19 – Free COVID Safe Community barbecue.

Due to COVID restrictions the draws will be livestreamed on the “Narrandera Business as Usual” Facebook page.

The Business Group would like to thank the Narrandera Council, Narran-dera Argus and the Business Enterprise Centre for their assistance in organising this Christmas promotions.

NARRANDERA Business as Usual Facebook page will be posting profiles of local businesses, Christmas special and video clips in the lead-up to Christmas and highly recommends everyone joins this group so they get notifications when new posts are added.

The Narrandera Business Group was born out of a discussion by several community members who were business owners or retired business owners who wanted to see the town and its businesses prosper now and into the future.

The Group is made up of a volunteer committee and finan-cial members and works for the betterment of the town’s businesses and is hoping that everyone will join in the spirit of the Christmas season and shop local.

There has never been a more important time in the aftermath of COVID-19 to support local busi-nesses and ensure they remain into the future.

A VISIT to Narrandera is not complete without a quick visit to the spectacular new mural on the water tower in north Narrandera.

The mural draws on the environmental, historical and cultural aspects of the town, including the Murrumbidgee River, a koala, gum trees, a Tiger Moth, the old Brewery, a windmill, Aboriginal dot painting, a paddlesteamer, kayakers and a lizard.

Koalas are a big tourist attraction and something unique to Narrandera as there are not many places you can walk around and see them in the trees.

The Tiger Moth represents the World War II training airfield, then there’s the old brew-ery, together with Owen Lyons Aboriginal dot painting and a windmill as a nod to the farming heritage of the area.

Narrandera’s picturesque sunsets are incorporated into the background, then there’s the Murrumbidgee River which links the individual paintings on the southern and north-east face.

An Eastern Bearded Dragon, after which the town is named, a paddle steamer similar to the ones that serviced Narrandera in its early years, people kayaking on the river and another dot painting provide reference to the town’s strong Aboriginal heritage.

LAKE Talbot is on target to become the premier recreation-al aquatic centre in the Riverina with $5.8 million worth of upgrades due for a “soft opening” in time for the Christmas holiday period.

The Olympic 50m and Rampage pools have been refurbished with a water park, toddler’s splash pool and new plant room under construction.

Narrandera Shire Council deputy general manager infra- structure Shane Wilson said the Olympic Pool and Rampage pools had been completed for a December 12 opening and new splash park to be opened on December 23.

This will turn Lake Talbot into the premier recreational aquatic centre in the region and one of the biggest outdoor complexes in the regional areas as far as country pools go.

Another bonus is that it will be open in time for the busy Christmas and New Year period, unlike some other neighbouring towns’ pools.

As well as major works at the Lake Talbot swimming pool, the Lake Talbot Tourist Park unit conversion project is under way and includes the refurbishment and transformation of an unused amenity block into two contemporary two bedroom units at the venue and the levelling of 12 caravan sites that were previously sloping and difficult to use.

The new units will have a kitchenette, dining and lounge area and will expand the accommodation options at the park.

A new amenity block and camp kitchen will be built in 2021, with a new playground included in the redevelopment.

The ‘Playground on Murrumbidgee’ projects are proudly funded by the NSW Government and Narrandera Shire Council.

    While you’re here...

Narrandera is not just about shopping – make sure you visit the Lake Talbot Water Park and experience the thrill of the two mega water slides, or drive up to the Narrandera water tower to admire the award winning mural. Photos: Kim Woods.
