Narrative in Music: Chase & Status – Let You Go
ByBertie Chatfield
Structure• The video opens with a central
character (Patrick Chase), portrayed as a Hero and man of purity, putting bad people to justice, making them face judgement on national TV, while having his own secrets.
• The public adores him and his show and at the start we watch his show, with him above the speakers, seeing himself as better than them, when in fact he is a False Hero outside his work.
Equilibrium & Disruption• The portrayal of the main character is
set as this “deliver of truth and honesty”, showing cowards and criminals for who they truly are in front of thousands.
• He laughs and mocks others while they suffer on stage, as if he’s better then them.
• However, the disruption comes after his show, we see him doing drugs, cheating on his wife and basically doing everything his TV show stands against.
• It is also clear that he is self-centred, with no care about other people’s lives, even with the children of the woman he sleeps with, he just moves to the next girl.
Recognition• Throughout the development of this
clip, we see just how twisted and cruel the main character truly is, seen as a hero and bringer of justice, while underneath he’s worse then people he accuses.
• He takes what he wants, whenever he wants, but still as his night of fun draws to an end we clearly see the self-hate and disgust he feels about himself.
• However, it’s not enough and we watch the circle start again when he returns to work, covers his shame in make-up and performs the hero once again.
