DVD REVIEW

17

As I recap the year for the archives and try to thank the many people involved in makingthe blues an important part of the Hampton Roads music scene, it is hard to believe thatthis year will come to a close in just two fleeting months. My heartfelt thanks to theNBN Board and Staff for all their hard work to make the festivals and the greatmedia formats that the NBN produces run smoothly. A great big hug to all thevolunteer angels for their time in slinging beer, folding t-shirts, and wrestling with gearto help the NBN with festival production and service groups. This brings us the neededincome to continue our efforts to keep festivals free and educate people about bluesmusic. Special thanks to the staff of FestEvents on the Norfolk events, Jim Scully andthe BeachEvents staff with the beach shows, and Sound Reinforcements, because itcould not have happened without them! Thank you also to Hampton Arts Commissionand the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission for their continued grantsupport. All this helped the NBN bring to the stage 150 musicians who shared over4,230 minutes of blues listening pleasure. My sincere thanks to all the musicians whoshared and continue to share their music, because without them this world would be fullof noise. Whether you chose to purchase the CD or catch live shows, please support thelocal cats, because this is where it all starts. Speaking of local talent, one of the bestvenues to check ‘em out is at the Blues Home Invasions and Jams. Get up close andpersonal, and enjoy the music.

Blues at the Beach rocked the 24th Street Stage for three great days in September. Wehope to be back at that venue next year. The Jewish Mother hosted the after-festivalshindig on Saturday night with most of the festival musicians in the house. Thanks toScotty Miller and his staff for their support so the Jam could continue. A new additionto the festival fun was the Blues Cruise aboard the Virginian Jewel. The MichaelClark Band featuring Tracy Clark rocked the boat as we cruised the LynnhavenRiver under a full September moon. What a musical treat to hear Tracy sing “ProudMary” while cruisin’ the river. A big round of applause to Gary Melton and the crewof the Virginian Jewel for an outstanding evening.

Looking forward is the NBN Annual Meeting and Holiday Party. As 2005 comes toclose, so do five seats of the NBN Board of Directors. Please, if you or anyone elseyou know would like to help our great non-profit foster success in the next two years, contact me or any Board Director. It’s a very worthwhile service and fun, also!

We are always looking for support with production of the newspaper, calendar, festivalsand education to help spread the word of the blues. Remember that you can trade wordsfor music when you review a CD. Some of us did the reporting from the road andchecked out other festivals and venues out of town, sharing photos and stories.

As always, I welcome comments, suggestions, complaints and advice, and can bereached via snail mail at the NBN mailing address, by phone at (757) 456-1675, or bye-mail at [email protected].

DVD REVIEW JJOOHHNN MMAAYYAALLLL && TTHHEE BBLLUUEESSBBRREEAAKKEERRSSJohn Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and Friends 70th Birthday ConcertEagle Eye Media EE 19022

The father of British blues, John Mayall, celebrated his seventieth birthdaywith a Liverpool concert on July 19th, 2003. Has it been 40 years since EricClapton split from the Yardbirds’ pop success of “For Your Love” to joinhis outfit? Following Clapton in that revolving guitar slot were suchluminaries as Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout and CocoMontoya. Current guitarist Buddy Wittington, Tom Canning on Hammond,Hank Van Sickle on bass, Joe Yuele on drums, Chris Barber on tromboneplus a three-piece horn crew provide the rock-solid backing forthe evening’s performances.

Starting with “Southside Story,” “Kid’s Got the Blues,” and “Dirty Water,”the band performs admirably. Mick Taylor guests on slide and Les Paulelectric on “Somebody’s Acting Like a Child,” “Blues For the Lost Days,”“Walking on Sunset,” and Albert King’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.”

The barrelhouse blues of “No Big Hurry” brings Clapton and Mayalltogether for the first time in 38 years. From “Please Mr. Lofton”through Freddie King’s “Hideaway” and the rumba minor blues of “All theLove” and “Have You Heard,” Clapton shows his strong suit with well-placed, economical solos. “Hoochie Coochie Man” and “I’m Tore Down”feature Clapton on vocals as well as his trademark vibrato-drenched guitarplaying. “It Ain’t Right” has Mayall alternating easily between harpand bluesy piano. The finale of “Talk to Your Daughter” has both Taylor andWhittington on slide; Clapton finishes things off rather nicely.

From harmonica to keyboards, guitar or voice, this DVD shows John Mayallat 70 with no signs of slowing down. Proceeds of the royalties of this DVDgo directly to UNICEF.

Texas native singer/songwriter Angela Strehli has had a successful relationship with M.C.Records for a few years now. She appeared on Phillip Walker’s Live at Biscuit & Blues,Shout Sister Shout: A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the 2005 Grammy nominatedand W.C. Handy Award-winning Ladies Man by Pinetop Perkins. Blue Highway, her firststudio recording in 7 years, is welcome listening to fans that remember the mid-1980’sdays in Austin with Angela Strehli (voted Austin’s Best Female Vocalist 6 times), Antone’s,Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Sarah Brown and Lou Ann Barton.

“Antone’s: Austin’s Home of the Blues,” the rousing opening cut, is a tune Strehli wrote fora documentary on the influential club. It was a labor of love because she was reunited withmany of her Austin musician friends. Strehi wanted to write “Blue Highway” for MarciaBall (who tours constantly). The song has a catchy chorus and includes guests Marcia Balland Maria Muldaur on vocals. You can’t help but sing along! Other highlights include“Slipped, Tripped, and Fell in Love.” It’s one of the few covers Strehli has recorded—AnnPeebles was an early influence. “C.O.D.,” the closing song, is from the 1985 album StevieRay Vaughan and Double Trouble Live at Carnegie Hall. It’s fitting to end with this songbecause it brings you back to the blues revival days of Austin and makes the recording feelcohesive.

In the blues world they say the older you are, the more authentic and better you are. Strehliturns 60 this year and has reached the maturity of a true blues artist. As Bonnie Raitt said,“Angela is one of the classiest and most soulful blues singers I know, great songs, sung andplayed with deep soul, funk and authenticity. This is the real deal.”

RREENNEEEE AAUUSSTTIINNRight About LoveBlind Pig Records BPCD 5099www.blindpigrecords.com

Soul-stirring vocalist Renee Austin returns with the Blind Pig release Right AboutLove, a rootsy, R&B mixed bag produced by guitarist Kevin Bowe and bassist DikShopteau and co-produced by Austin. This disc boasts the same solid musicianlineup as her initial CD Sweet Dreams.

From the swamp rock “Mouth of the Delta,” the roots and country “Harder ThanIt Has to Be,” to the slow, R&B-flavored “Right About Love,” Austin’s soulful andgritty testifying is right up front. “U-Haul” rocks hard with jangling guitars andAustin’s unyielding vocals; the funky Stax feel of “Thank You Card” flowswith energetic keyboard work and Austin’s and Cynthia Johnson’srobust harmonies. Austin goes from true grit to her simmering warm vibrato withthe guitar-driven, blues rocking “Meant To Be” segueing into the slow funk of“Strangers on a Train.” On the rootsy stomp of Bobbie Gentry’s “Bugs” and therockabilly treatment of Arthur Crudup’s classic “That’s Alright,” Austin easilyshows her singing versatility. The humorous country-rock spiced “ChickenCoop” and the bluesy country romp “Mister Cowboy” round out this finesecond disc.

Renee Austin proves on her sophomore effort, Right About Love, that theincredible promise of her 2003 release Sweet Dreams was no fluke. She andher tight band flirt with the likes of blues, country, R&B and funk, all withamazing results. As a gutsy singer, Austin stands in the shadows of no one; herincredible range as original, emotional and powerful as any vocalist’s around.

JJAASSOONN RRIICCCCII && NNEEWW BBLLOOOODDBlood on the RoadRah Fox Recordswww.jasonricci.com

I have seen the future of the blues harmonica and his name is Jason Ricci. From his discsDown at the Juke (1997), Feel Good Funk (2003), and Her Satanic Majesty’s Request:Harmonica Music (2004), Ricci has brought his virtuosic harmonica approach to an ever-widening blues audience. His latest CD, Blood on the Road, marks the initial recording withhis touring band of Slim Louis on bass, Shawn Starsky on lead guitar and vocals, and SteveJohnson on drums.

In the steady funk of “Snowflakes and Horses,” with Starsky’s vibrato-drenched riffs, Ricci’sharp goes way down deep Chicago. Willie Dixon’s classic “Mellow Down Easy,” with Ricci’simprovisational riffing, sets the bar as a major boogie tune. The steady slow swing of “Downat the Juke” with Starsky’s nervous solo, follows Ricci’s harp, spitting out sax lines andvocally coming across as a grittier Peter Wolf (J. Geils Band). From the slow “BluesPenitentiary,” with Ricci alternating country and Chicago clipped styles, the band slides intoa snappy instrumental “Marmoset Baked Potato” featuring a fine guitar break by Starsky.“Roll All Day” bumps with a James Brown backbeat, followed by “My Head’s a BadNeighborhood” and Ricci’s breathy harp overtones. “The World Just Wrong” keeps that “rockme baby” beat going, as Starsky’s guitar slides and Ricci goes back Southside Chicago. The rumba-influenced minor blues “The One Least in Love” and the shuffling instrumental“Walter’s World” finish the tasty showcase of this amazing harmonica-and-guitar-enrichedblues disc.

Letter to the Natchel’Blues NetworkMembership

The NBN is a non-profit organization made up of people like youand me who enjoy good music. We are a successful organizationthat’s been in existence for 21 years. Our membership mustcontinue to grow to ensure we pass on to future generations theimportance of music in our personal lives and in the world inwhich we live.

Music knows no segregation, discrimination or any other“imination” I can think of. Blues music is a languagecommunicated to us by virtue of our life experience; it is a meansthat unites all.

We, the NBN, promote blues music in theHampton Roads area.

We support local artists as well as national artists.

We provide venues for our musicians and we support them!

In an effort to continue our mission to provide the HamptonRoads area with the benefits the NBN has to offer we must askourselves, “What can I do to help?” I prefer to ask, “What canWE do to help?” The team approach is the most successful!

Our Blues at the Beach Festival brought over a hundredvolunteers out to work Security, Beer Tent, NBN MerchandiseTent and Stage. These volunteers consisted of 75% NBNmembers and 25% non-members. Our members know who thenon-members are. Let’s get the 25% to join our organization!Let’s recruit them! This is the perfect time! Let’s not miss thisopportunity!

With no competing blues festivals on the immediate horizon, I headed up toMarket Square in Fredericksburg on September 10th for their annual “Blues in theBurg.” For nearly eleven hours on a hot, sticky Saturday. Electric andacoustic blues, swing jazz, and gospel musicians entertained the energetic crowd.

Throughout the afternoon, six informative workshops were given in a large roomat an adjacent museum. Some of those included guitarist GGeerrrryy BBeeaauuddooiinn “TheBusiness of Music,” last year’s “Blues at the Beach” favorite, EE..GG.. KKiigghhtt, andFFrraannkklliinn//WWiilllliiaammss, a fine Piedmont blues harp/guitar duo. Also interspersedbetween the acts were ten blues guitar contestants, performing either solo oralongside a backing blues instrumental track. The one and only JJ.. GGeeiillss gave outthe award to the winner picked by a panel of blues musicians.

From nearby Maryland, WWaarrnneerr WWiilllliiaammss and JJaayy SSuummmmeerroouurr, on guitar and bluesharp respectively, ran through a highly entertaining set of acoustic Piedmont styleblues. TThhee BBllaacckk CCaatt BBlluueess BBaanndd featured some great lead guitar, harp andkeyboards in a Chicago-style blues format. TThhee PPaasscchhaallll BBrrootthheerrss showed theirfine vocal harmony in a purely gospel setting. TThhee BBrruuccee MMiiddddllee GGrroouupp, featuringBruce’s unique guitar style, played a fine set of jazz/blues influenced numbers.Local favorite CCaattffiisshh HHooddggee, playing now with a trio, threw himself into a sweaty,low-down mood with “Roll ‘Em Easy,” “Honey Don’t,” and “Queen of LeanCuisine.”

EE..GG.. KKiigghhtt really showed her stuff, mixing “Evil,” “Southbound,” “SouthernComfort,” and “Trouble with a Capitol T” into an R&B emotional eveninghighlight. Her band of BBiillllyy CCrraawwffoorrdd on lead guitar, JJoohhnnnnyy FFoouunnttaaiinn on bass, andGGaarryy PPoorrtteerr on drums were also pretty hot.

TToomm PPrriinncciippaattoo, alongside bandmates JJoohhnn PPeerrrryy on bass and JJooee WWeellllss onpercussion, simply brought down the house. Performing rocking Cajun drenchedtunes “Hey Now Baby” and “If Love is Blind” from their new disc Guitar Gumbo, they had the crowd dancing from the get go. He, alongside legends Danny Gattonand Roy Buchanan, has to be one of the most unsung hot guitarists still outthere doing it.

JJ.. GGeeiillss with the GGeerrrryy BBeeaauuddooiinn JJaazzzz QQuuaarrtteett finished off the evening with somemighty fine swing guitar. All in all, this turned out to be just a great day ofreally soulful music in downtown Fredericksburg.

On a hot and steamy night, Aug. 21st to be exact, I walked up to the Station 2Restaurant in Norfolk. Sitting on the porch, smoking a cigarette was James Cotton. Iwalked up to him and told him a story. “I grew up in Chicago,” I told him. “You’re thefirst bluesman I ever heard live. Not the first one I saw, but heard. When I was a kid,my friend and I took the ‘el’ to the Southside to the Checkerboard Lounge.” “Do youknow who owned the Checkerboard Lounge?” he asked in his gravelly voice. “No,” Ianswered. “That was Buddy Guy’s place,” he said. “Well, I heard him there too, andKoko Taylor. We used to take the ‘el’ there at night, and the dishwasher would let us sitout back in the alley, in a couple of lawn chairs, and listen to the music. You were thefirst bluesman I ever heard,” I told him. He laughed.

I heard him again that night. This time I heard him in a place where Art Deco meetsConstantinople. TThhee oowwnneerrss ooff SSttaattiioonn 22,, NNeedd && JJoonnaatthhoonn,, have really made the OldGrande Hotel a new place. With rugs hung on the ceiling, wonderful geometric designsadorning the walls, and a concrete floor made from old maps of Hampton Roads, theStation 2 is a happening venue.

We had our dinner, rockfish for Bruce, and a NY strip steak for me, served by ourwaitress, Ilona. We topped it off with a wonderful South African Brut Rosé. Our dinnerwas, in a word, yum.

Now it was time for the music. JJoonnaatthhoonn was on the mixing board. Playing his lefthanded Gibson ES 335, lead guitarist TToomm HHoollllaanndd came out smokin’. CChhaarrlleess MMaacckkwas on his 6-string Yamaha bass, brother MMaarrkk was on drums, and SSllaamm AAlllleenn was onrhythm guitar. The band was tight, but the best was yet to come. James Cotton, sittingin the center of the stage, broke out his harp and the crowd went crazy. The band playeda tasty set including “Mustang Sally” and “Got My Mojo Workin’.”

Next thing I know, Allen, from the band RRyylloo, jumped up and was sitting on Cotton’slap playing his harp. It was wild. Then another guy jumped up, sat on Cotton’s lap andplayed his harp. One by one, local harp players were jumpin’ on his lap and blowin’harp. It was surreal.

I can’t wait until Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings play at Station 2 on Oct. 16th.I’m there!

12th Annual Blues At The Beach Wrap-UpThe 12th Annual Blues at the Beach festival took place September 16th, 17th and 18th at the 24th Street Park & Stage (AKA Seaside Palladium) on the Virginia Beachoceanfront. Hurricane Ophelia had just gone north at sea, and we had a hot, sunny weekend.

Hampton Roads’ TThhee RRhhyytthhmm KKiinnggss began the festival early Friday evening. This swinging, little big band consists of sax, trumpet, guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Like theirwebsite says, “What you see and hear is what you get — real music played by live musicians. The Rhythm Kings do not employ sequencers, synthesizers or canned music ofany type.” The blue-eyed soul man from Pittsburgh was next. BBiillllyy PPrriiccee and his band have been entertaining audiences for over 30 years and it shows. The man hasincredible stage presence and showmanship. The Billy Price Band headlined that night, but the festivities continued with the sold out BBlluueess CCrruuiissee on TThhee VViirrggiinniiaann JJeewweellyacht. TThhee MMiicchhaaeell CCllaarrkk BBaanndd ffeeaattuurriinngg TTrraaccyy CCllaarrkk entertained the audience as the boat cruised along the Lynnhaven River. The Norfolk-based band always closes the nightwith ““PPrroouudd MMaarryy,,”” and Tracy had everyone chuckling when she said it was the first time she sang the song on a boat. They really WERE “rollin’ on the river”!

On Saturday, the festival kicked off with our own BBllaacckk RRoossee BBlluueess BBaanndd. Lead vocalist JJaacckkiiee SSccootttt and the band (JJDD SSiillvviiaa, BBoobbbbyy ““BBllaacckkhhaatt”” WWaalltteerrss, BBoonneess and MMiikkeePPeellzzeell) took us deep into Chicago! DDeennnniiss GGrruueennlliinngg presented an informative harmonica workshop, then joined his band JJuummpp TTiimmee for an outstanding set of jump blues. The talented vocalist GGiinnaa FFooxx fronts this New Jersey-based outfit. Tidewater’s JJoohhnn BBaallddwwiinn presented an educational guitar workshop. He even handed out guitar tablatureworksheets to the attendees! After a break (it WAS dinnertime), the CCyyrriill LLaannccee BBaanndd ffeeaattuurriinngg JJoohhnnnnyy NNeeeell took the stage. Lance played slide guitar, while Grammy-nominated keyboardist Johnny Neel sang and played organ & piano. It was Southern blues-rock at its best. Before the festival continued, the park was taken over by a city-sponsored event called ““BBeeaacchh BBllaasstt..”” As a beautiful full moon rose over the ocean, the BBlluuee AAnnggeellss entertained us with an awe-inspiring flyover. A couple of minutes later, more planes flew overhead and a few groups of ppaarraattrrooooppeerrss descended onto the beach. The audience had almost doubled in size by the time EEddddiiee SShhaaww && tthhee WWoollffggaannggappeared. The Howlin’ Wolf Band alumnus, his son EEddddiiee VVaaaann SShhaaww JJrr., longtime bassist ““SShhoorrttyy”” GGiillbbeerrtt, and drummer TTiimm TTaayylloorr took us to Chicago’s Southside with aperformance only they can give. They’ve obviously been to this area a lot over the years, and were greeting old friends long after their set ended. BBeerrnnaarrdd AAlllliissoonn was aperfect headliner. After seeing only his club appearances in the last few years, I can truly say he’s a festival performer. One of the highlights was when he entertained thecrowd by walking into the park while playing an extended solo. The festival officially ended after Allison’s set, but the party continued at ““TThhee PPrroo JJaamm AAfftteerr--PPaarrttyy”” at TThheeJJeewwiisshh MMootthheerr. Lots of festival performers came out to give us more! BBeerrnnaarrdd AAlllliissoonn,, EEddddiiee VVaaaann SShhaaww JJrr..,, DDeennnniiss GGrruueennlliinngg,, aanndd JJuummpp TTiimmee vvooccaalliisstt GGiinnaa FFooxx jjooiinneedd hhoossttbbaanndd TThhee CCyyrriill LLaannccee BBaanndd ffeeaattuurriinngg JJoohhnnnnyy NNeeeell aatt tthhee jjaamm.. Our own BBoobbbbyy ““BBllaacckkhhaatt”” WWaalltteerrss and LLaarrrryy SSllaawwssoonn also performed. What a night!

Sunday, only a 5-hour day, kicked off at Noon with our own HH..MM.. JJoohhnnssoonn BBaanndd. HHeennrryy JJoohhnnssoonn has been on the scene since NBN’s inception, and his veteran musical talentis evident. He, bassist CCaarrllttoonn LLiillllaarrdd, and drummer JJuu--JJuu have been together for almost 10 years. They play together effortlessly! When their set ended, AAnnnn RRaabbssoonn gave asuperb piano workshop. She explained the difference between musical styles like barrelhouse and boogie-woogie, played examples for everyone, was entertaining ANDeducational. Co-founder of SSaaffffiirree--tthhee UUppppiittyy BBlluueess WWoommeenn, she’s doing very well as a solo artist, has been to this area a lot since 1984, and seems like one of our ownwho’s made it big on the international blues scene. It was time for a Chicago Blues extravaganza that featured Blues Music Award winners and nominees. WWiilllliiee ““BBiigg EEyyeess””SSmmiitthh, longtime drummer from The Muddy Waters Band, entertained us with a set where he played harmonica (his first instrument) and sang. Later, he played drums on a fewtunes with Bob Margolin’s All Star Blues Jam. An unexpected surprise was multi-Blues Music Award nominee BBoobb SSttrrooggeerr on bass! The Chicago Blues hit full stride when BBoobbMMaarrggoolliinn’’ss AAllll SSttaarr BBlluueess JJaamm ffeeaattuurriinngg CCaarreeyy BBeellll,, NNaappppyy BBrroowwnn,, && AAnnnn RRaabbssoonn took the stage and ended the festival. Margolin and bass player MMooookkiiee BBrriillll brought eachfeatured performer onstage to front the band for a few songs. CCaarreeyy BBeellll has a harmonica tone like no other. He’s a REAL legend, and you could hear a pin drop during hisperformance. AAnnnn RRaabbssoonn has played or jammed often with Margolin and you could hear their musical “conversation” – it fit like a favorite, well-worn glove. NNaappppyy BBrroowwnnelectrified the crowd with his classic hit, “Night Time is The Right Time.” He STILL performs with stage antics like lying on his back and kicking his legs into the air whilesinging.

Thanks to NNBBNN PPrreessiiddeenntt DDeebb MMaalleennddaa--HHiillll, the NNBBNN BBooaarrdd ooff DDiirreeccttoorrss and our hhaarrdd--wwoorrkkiinngg vvoolluunntteeeerrss for bringing us another great free blues festival and keeping theblues alive in Hampton Roads!
