Anodes & AccessoriesCathodic Protection

Cathodic protection requires periodic replacement of consumed anodes in treaters and other production vessels. The use of anodes and accessories make this process simple.

Rod Anode

Rod anodes are cast with threaded steel rod cores and come in aluminum, zinc and magnesium.

The 4” 150 anode flange has a 22” long threaded rod with an eight hole flange that bolts on to the side of the vessel. The 3” X 22” anode threads on to the end of the rod and is inserted into the vessel.

Anode wire also know as a Pig Tail, is 78” long and attaches to the 4” 150 flange. Anode wire is used to ground the flange and vessel.

The anode insulation kit is attached to the 4” 150 flange as an added seal between the flange and the vessel. The gasket in the kit is made from a Neo faced Phenolic INS material.

Anode rollers are positioned under the anode for support so the anode does not touch the vessel wall.

Slab Anode

Slab anodes are square shaped with a hole in the center where it attaches to a stud on the inside floor of the vessel. Natco slab anodes come in aluminum and magnesium.

Bagged & Packaged Anodes

The 5 Lb. zinc bagged anodes are packed in a rugged water permeable cardboard tube that has a minimum wall thickness of 2.3 mm. 17 Lb. are packaged in a cotton like material bag. Both these types of anodes are recommended for use in soils as grounding cells on electrical equipment and across insulators on pipelines to limit high voltages. Typical grounding applications include pipelines, power stations, storage tanks, and transmission line towers and cables. Bagged anodes come in zinc and magnesium material.

Natco Flame Arrestor Housing & Flame Cells

Natco flame arrestors are used to prevent the transmission of flame within the combustion chamber when exposed to an external fuel source. The purpose of a flame arrestor is to reduce the temperature of a flame below the ignition temperature of the fuel to withstand the internal forces of an explosion.

Natco flame arrestor housings and flame cells are available and recommended for all fired units. Fire tube size, length, BTU rating, type of gas and application specs are required prior to ordering all flame arrestor housings or flame cells.

Flame arrestor housings are constructed from standard aluminum but can be made of carbon or stainless steel material depending on the type of application it will be placed in.

Flame cells can be made from aluminum or stainless steel material and come in four different styles: O-Type – 1-2 PiecesT-TypeBox-TypeCone-Type

PERFORMAX CoalescerCoalescing & Filter Media

PERFORMAX Coalescers

Natco revolutionized oil and water separation with the development of the PERFORMAX matrix plate. This coalescing media accelerates gravity separation of oil from water and water from oil with remarkable efficiency. It is useful in heated process equipment as well as in ambient separation systems like free-water knockouts. It handles a wide variety of oil and water dispersions in all ranges of API oil gravities.

Large Volumes in Small VesselsThe horizontal coalescer uses an inlet momentum absorber to slow the velocity and distribute the flow of the incoming stream. Then the oil and water mixture flows into the PERFORMAX matrix plate section where the inclined channels accelerate coalescence. (See Figures 1 & 2). Separation efficiency improves dramatically because PERFORMAX technology causes the oil droplets to coalesce and rise much more rapidly than smaller droplets in conventional coalescers. (See figures 3 & 4). As a result, the PERFORMAX coalescer handles higher flow rates through smaller vessels and gets better results.

DESCRIPTION

PERFORMAX Coalescer

Coalescing

Page 41: NATCO Catalogue

Why should you consider PERFORMAX matrix plates?

Achieves excellent water quality and 98% removal of oil particulates attainable with proper chemical treatment.

Improves gas quality with lower oil entrainment and eliminates the need for a supplement mist extractor.

Lowers BS&W content with higher quality of discharged oil it allows greater treater efficiency and lower fuel requirements.

Reduce chemical costs with lower chemical dosages which improves performance and reduces chemical costs as much as 50%.

Consistent operation under widely variable conditions, it absorbs fluctuating flow rates, varying solids contamination and oil and water mixtures to minimize the effects of normal day to day upsets.

Reduce space requirements because the PERFORMAX system uses a single, often smaller vessel with a higher flow rate capacity to achieve better separation efficiency. The horizontal vessel minimizes head room requirements.

Lowers operating costs since no power is required for the actual separation process.

No pumps required so the system is totally inline with no head loss in the operation.

Simple installation above or below ground with hook-up to the incoming flow to the water effluent line and oil effluent lines.

High reliability because there are no moving parts and the media itself is easily removable for routine maintenance and cleaning. ASME Code Construction is a Natco standard.

Resists plugging because the open matrix design minimizes plugging problems often encountered with other types of coalescing systems.

Ideal for retro fit because PERFORMAX plate sections retrofit easily into existing coalesces, free water knockouts and skim tanks to boost their capacities and efficiencies.

Vane Pak & MistexCoalesing & Filter Media

Vane Pak

Mistex Pad

Vane Pak

The Vane Pak Mist Eliminator is designed to remove entrained liquid droplets from high velocity gas streams. The rugged construction and open blade spacing can be used in diverse applications. The non-welded, bolt and spacer construction adds an extra edge to corrosion resistance. All the vane paks are designed to meet a wide range of process requirements

Vertical radial flow vane paks are utilized for high gas/oil ratios, any oil gravity and very high gas flow rates. The separation mechanism is impingement and coalescence. They are used in vertical separators

Vertical radial flow vane paks allow higher gas flows through the separator. The radial vane passageways diverge to give better turndown performance

Vertical radial flow vane paks can be retrofitted to existing separators.

Mistex Pad

The Mistex Pads are designed for the separation of mist and small liquid droplets from gas or a vapor stream. The theory on the mistex pad is that the liquid particles collide with the wire mesh and coalesce into droplets. Gravity will then cause the droplets to fall through the mesh pad and collect in the vessel. Dry gas will go through the downstream side of the wire mesh while the liquid is removed from the vessel through a dump valve.

The knitted wire mesh is rolled and available in different sizes and shapes. The material is a 9# density and is available in 4” and 6” thicknesses and the grade of the material is 316 Stainless Steel.

MistTrap™ Aerosol Coalescer Filter ElementSureTrap™ Gas-Particulate Filter ElementSureTrap™ Liquid-Particulate Filter ElementSureTrap™ Carbon Filter ElementFluidSep™ Liquid/Liquid Separation Filter Element

Natcoʼs FluidSep™ Liquid/Liquid Separation Filter Element utilizes a specialty media that increases suspended water removal and decreases costs even under some of the most difficult situations for refiners.

Refinery products are negatively affected by water; therefore, refiners must put in substantial equipment, materials and labor into water removal. It is necessary to remove water from fuel due to its corrosive nature. Water contains various corrosive materials, such as chlorides and caustic that can wreak havoc on refinery or other types of equipment. Water can corrode tank bottoms and promote bacterial growth. Processes such as steam stripping, caustic treating and amine treating inherently add equilibrium concentrations of water under normal operating conditions

Natcoʼs FluidSep™ Liquid/Liquid Element media is a composition of inorganic microfibers of various cross sectional diameters designed to maximize efficiency.

Great care is taken in fabricating the FluidSep™ filter media matrix into a durable filter element of superb quality. Materials used in this element (support cores, end caps seals, etc.) have been carefully selected to ensure fabrication integrity, fluid compatibility, and reliable collapse ratings

Cost Effective – Removes suspended water that can promote corrosion in equipment.

Beta Rated Filtration – Predictable efficiency to the specified particle size during the life of the filter.

Long Life – High surface area resulting in more holding capacity

Chemical Compatibility –FluidSep™ Filter Media is compatible with most process fluid chemicals

DESI-DRI Type HPADesiccant

DESI-DRI HPA Gas Drying Tablets

Water vapor is a common impurity found in natural gas. Operating problems caused by condensing water vapor can include: gas line freezing, formation of hydrates in meters, valves etc. and corrosion due to wet conditions. Most pipeline companies require some level of gas quality. DESI-DRI HPA is an inexpensive way to reduce moisture content of natural gas. DESI-DRI HPA can be used in systems with higher temperature gas. The tablet allows for good contact between the gas stream and the medium, which will reduce channeling and bridging and gain maximum drying effectiveness. DESI-DRI HPA can be used by itself or in combination with other grades of desiccant, such as DESI-DRI C. In this application the natural gas flows through the DESI-DRI HPA first, removing the majority of the moisture and then through the DESI-DRI C to further reduce dew points. This arrangement is more cost efficient because the more expensive DESI-DRI C lasts longer.

DESI-DRI HPA is a tablet that has several advantages over competitive pellets and briquettes.

Made with over ten tons of compression.

Harder, more dense tablets resist caking, channeling, blooming and dusting

Minimizes re-crystallization in sump with gas temperature above 85ºF.

DESI-DRI Type CDesiccant

DESI-DRI C Gas Drying Tablets

Natural gas pipeline moisture specifications can be difficult to meet. Desiccants lower relative humidity to an acceptable level. Unfortunately, common desiccants often do not take enough water out of the gas to meet more stringent specifications. DESI-DRI C is three times more effective than the more common desiccants. DESI-DRI C effectively lowers relative humidity to meet gas pipeline specifications.

DESI-DRI C can be used by itself or in combination with DESI-DRI HPA. In this application the natural gas flows through the DESI-DRI HPA first, removing the majority of the moisture and then through the DESI-DRI C to meet specifications. The arrangement is more cost effective because the DESI-DRI C lastslonger. DESI-DRI C is a tablet that virtually eliminates powder and broken briquettes.

DESI-DRI C is a tablet that has several advantages over competitive pellets and briquettes.

DESI-DRI D Gas Drying Tablets

DESI-DRI D represents the most advanced technology in gas drying deliquescent to date. Produced as a eutectic in a novel patented process, DESI-DRI D eliminates many of the drawbacks that have been historically associated with conventionally produced gas drying tables. Since a eutectic pellet represents a homogeneous new crystal-line form, the problems of tablet compression, disintegration and dusting are virtually eliminated. DESI-DRI D has been developed to meet the economic, environmental and performance requirements of a more demanding gas processingmarket. It also has been engineered to meet new dew point requirements where other desiccants can not. The drying performance of DESI-DRI D surpasses that of competitive lithium based drying tablets.

DESI-DRI D should be used in a single pass multistage, high pressure contractor. DESI-DRI D drying systems can be installed downstream of DESI-DRI A dryers to minimize the consumption of product.

Outlet moisture levels from a DESI-DRI D drying tower are determined by the physical properties of the gas. Lower temperatures and higher pressures tend to improve performance, while the opposite is true for higher temperature and lower pressures.

DESI-DRI D drying systems have several advantages over competitive gas drying options.

Dusting problems eliminated by unique pellet composition.

Caking & channeling are reduced or eliminated by fast deliquescent action.

Closed drying system results in no emissions, no fuel consumption or environmental concerns.

DESI-DRI Type EDesiccant

DESI-DRI E Gas Drying Tablets

Natural gas dehydration at low pressures and low flow rates can be very difficult. Most conventional salt-type desiccants are unable to adequately dry gas under very low pressure (<75psi) or when stringent pipeline specifications (>7 lbs. H2O/MMCF) must be met. DESI-DRI E was developed to meet dew points where other desiccants or glycols can not.

DESI-DRI E can be used by itself or in combination with other grades of desiccant, such as DESI-DRI C and DESI-DRI HPA. In this application the natural gas flows through the DESI-DRI HPA or C first removing the majority of the moisture and then through the DESI-DRI E to further reduce dew points.

DESI-DRI E tables have several advantages over the low pressure gas drying options.

Answers to Common Questions

History of desiccant drying:

Deliquesant desiccants have been used to dehydrate natural gas since the 1920ʼs and historically have been primarily utilized by independent operators at relatively low flow capacity installations. Consequently, equipment was frequently pieced together on location and the main drying vessel resembled a vertical separator with a screen inserted to support the desiccant. As design flow rate increased the, “pot”, style dryer was simply increased. How ever this led to numerous operational problems such as channeled gas flow, which causes washouts and velocity problems within the desiccant bed. This results in inadequate drying, bridging of desiccant and fluid and desiccant carryover in to the downstream gas line. These, “pot”, style dryers were typically designed to operate at a linear velocity of 0.25 to 0.75ft/sec. Consequently, deliquesant desiccant dryers were seldom used for higher flow (over 10MMscfd) applications. Also many of the early desiccant dryers were actually converted air dryers and were designed for low pressure. This led to the misconception that deliquesant desiccant dryers could only be used for low flow and low pressure systems.

What are desiccants and how do NATCO desiccant dehydration systems work?

Deliquesant desiccants are primarily made from various blends of alkali earth metal halide salts and are naturally hygroscopic. Water vapor is removed from gas as it flows through a bed of desiccant tablets in a pressure vessel. Moisture is attracted to salts in the deliquescent tablets and coats them with hygroscopic (water attracting) brine. This brine continues to attract water and forms a droplet and then flows down the desiccant bed into a sump. An automatic level controller and control valve then discharge the effluent water into a storage tank. Common brine water is the only byproduct. Since the desiccants dissolve upon attracting and absorbing water vapor (deliquesce), new desiccant is simply added to the vessel when needed.

How long will the desiccant in each vessel last?

This is a common question that is a function of a couple of variables. The refill rate of the vessel is a function of the volume of desiccant contained in each vessel and the total quantity of water that is removed from the gas stream to meet the customerʼs outlet gas specification. Please note that the consumption of the various types of desiccants are different; therefore the refill rates in a multistage system will all be different. Also in a multistage system the first vessel will remove approximately 70% of the water and will be the vessel that will need to be serviced the most. The NATCO engineering design program can be used to design a system to meet the customerʼs needs. It is important to remember that for the vast majority of situations, refill intervals are not a critical issue. Most production sites are visited every day or two and the refill process, except for very large systems, takes no more that 30 minutes. Longer refill intervals require larger or more vessels and consequently higher equipment costs. Stress the ease of the refill operation unless the customer has a legitimate reason for extended refills, such as a remote site location or sour gas, etc.

Will the desiccant system work in sour gas production?

Yes the desiccant dehydration technology will work in sour gas production and is a definite benefit because it eliminates odor problems caused by H2S and unwanted stack gas emissions such as SO2. There are desiccant dryers in operation today that are dehydrating sour gas with H2S concentrations of 30,000ppm. Additionally, dry desiccant units are successfully operating on gas streams containing 20% by volume of CO2. These desiccants will operate on pure H2S and CO2 gas streams.

Whatʼs new about DESI-DRI desiccant technology?

Below is a comparison between old calcium chloride technology and the NATCO DESI-DRI technology.

Old Technology The DESI-DRI Difference & Solution

Soft, crumbly briquettes Hard compression and eutectic tablesPorous briquettes Non-porous, low permeability tabletsBlooming and caking No blooming or caking, tablets retain their hardness Bridging in the dryers No bridging due to better tablets and equipmentChanneling of the gas flow No channeling due to superior equipment design Broken briquettes and powder Hard tables do not break in storage and shippingDust carryover down line No dust with hard tabletsLimited drying ability Different grades provide very dry resultsPlugging of vessel trays No trays to plugComplicated equipment Very simple equipment operationTall towers – difficult service Low profile units, very easy & safe to serviceUnpredictable results/usage Predictable performance and operating costsVery little engineering Tablets and equipment supported by computer simulation

What are the best applications for desiccant dehydration? Some of the best applications for desiccant dehydration are listed below:

- Medium and high pressure sales gas - Cool sales gas (less than 80ºF) - Hydrate control in pipelines - Free water control in pipelines - Fuel gas for compressors, line heaters, chiller engines, generators, etc. - To eliminate emission and odor problems with TEG units by replacing them - Environmentally sensitive areas where VOCs, NO_ and BTEX emissions as well as ground contamination are an issue. - Replace oversized TEG units- Drying sour gas streams - Instrument gas - Temporary, portable or short-term rental applications - Remote sites - Very low pressure (10 to 50 psig) gas where TEG does not work and is not feasible - Floating production platforms ( no pitch and roll considerations) - Floating production barges

Page 54: NATCO Catalogue

What are the advantages of desiccant dehydration? There are a lot of advantages to the desiccant dehydration technology over other methods used to dehydrate natural gas. Some of the advantages are listed below:

- No VOC and BTEX emissions- No ground contaminations from glycols- Easy installations- No costly disposal- Simple operation- No fire hazard- Low maintenance- No pumps, burners or heat exchangers- Low predictable operating costs- No “turn down limitations”- Low capital expenditure

How do you know when it is time to add desiccant to the system?

The NATCO engineering program is used to calculate the life bed of a vessel for a given set of process conditions. After each unit is installed at the customerʼs production site it is recommended that the vessel be reopened after a few days of operation to measure how far the top of the desiccant bed had dropped inside the vessel. If the bed has dropped 1ʼ to 0” over a three day period and the bed height is 4ʼ to 0”, this probably means that the vessel will need to be filled every nine days, since 1ʼ to 0” of desiccant should remain in the vessel at all times. Over time the person responsible for filling the vessel will get a feel for when each vessel needs to be refilled with desiccant.

Changes in the inlet gas temperature, pressure and the duration of down time at the facility will affect the time interval at which the vessel needs refilling. Each vessel is designed with a 1-1/4” 3000# sight port on the side of the vessel, which is located 1ʼ to 0” above the bottom of the desiccant bed. It is important to never let the desiccant height in the vessel drop below 1ʼ to 0”, as this will start to affect the outlet gas stream.

To what level should the vessel be filled with desiccant?

Fill each vessel with the correct desiccant until the desiccant height is approximately 1” below the gas outlet. The dryer vessel has a stainless steel screen welded inside to cover the nozzle opening. This screen will prevent tablets from falling into the gas outlet piping should the dryer be overfilled. Overfilling the dryer will not cause any operational problems in a properly designed desiccant dehydration system.

Page 55: NATCO Catalogue

How do you dispose of the brine?

Almost everyone asks about the disposal of the brine (salt water) at the bottom of the dryer vessel. The brine is piped to the customerʼs water storage vessel and disposed of with all other production fluids. It is important to note that dryers produce a very small amount of brine when compared to other production fluids. A dryer flowing 20MMscfd at 1250 psig and 70ºF, drying 5# water/MMscf outlet gas spec produces only one barrel per day, assuming the inlet gas stream is completely saturated with water vapor.

Will the brine in the dryer vessel cause corrosion?

For corrosion to occur, free oxygen must be present. The brine inside the vessel will not cause corrosion in the dehydration of any gas streams in which oxygen is not present. Natural gas, CO2 and H2S contain no free oxygen. In any dry desiccant systems in which free oxygen is present, corrosion is a major design concern. The vessels can be coated internally with an appropriate system. Carboline and other major coating manufactures have systems specifically designed for salts. Additionally, the drain piping and valves must be appropriately protected through the use of stainless steel trim in the valve and internal coating in the piping of the use of stainless steel pipe.

Natco Electrostatic Grid Transformers and Controllers

Load Responsive Controller (LRC)- Provides a one-programmed voltage profile sequence to the grid transformer to produce optimum, or

specific, coalescing / mixing for crude oil treating.- Monitors the Treater Grid performance and protects all components against upset or dangerous

conditions such as electrical over load. - Returns the grid system to normal operation immediately after the occurrence / correction of upset condition- Quenches the power to terminate high current arcing situations.

Dual Frequency Controller- The Dual Frequency process improves the performance of an electrostatic dehydration process by creating a

high voltage field that promotes aggressive water droplet movement and coalescence. The Dual Frequency process overcomes the problem created by high oil conductivity and low interface tension.

- By using the high frequency transistors to control the voltage levels, the Dual Frequency transformer is capable of combining a high frequency base voltage with a low frequency modulation. The high frequency significantly reduces the voltage decay from the electrodes and sustains the DC voltage field. The low frequency provides a controlled droplet oscillation and prevents droplet dispersion.

- In addition to the improvements in process performance, the Dual Frequency process typically provides the best performance at lower voltage levels then the typical Dual Polarity or AC processes. This reduces the electrical stress imposed on hangers, bushings, cables, diodes, etc.
