CSIS NCR Chapter message This is the time of year to reflect upon what we’ve accomplished over the past year as a Chapter. Member feedback expressed a preference for having meetings closer to downtown, so we relocated a couple of them to the Army Ottawa Officers' Mess by hosting a Buffet Breakfast meeting and a Lunch and Learn session and continued to seek out strong guest speakers on timely topics for our members. Our Guest Speakers for 2010 were: Kimberly Weston-Martin, who manages the City of Ottawa’s Transit Law Enforcement Program for OC Transpo. RCMP Sgt Sylvie Tremblay, who briefed on Identity theft, threats, and phishing (e-mail fraud). Mr. Daniel Lavoie, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Emergency Management and National Security, and Keith de Bellefeuille Percy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Capital Area Crime Stoppers. Our meetings are becoming increasingly multi- generational and we’re experiencing a welcome shift that is re-energizing our meetings and membership. The Executive welcomed Catherine DeCesare, who joined our team as our Student Liaison. Now in her second year at Algonquin College in the Corporate Security and Risk Management program, Catherine has been a reliable presence at our meetings and demonstrated leadership amongst student members. We would also like to welcome the new wave of student members joining us from Algonquin’s Program. We are honoured to integrate the perspectives of current and future generations which include students, career builders, rising stars and young leaders. I invite you to visit the “Student Zone” of our National Capital Region Chapter website – www.csisinc-ncr.com and view the updates from our Algonquin student members in Corporate Security and Risk Management. Also, the Regional Site continues to feature our newsletters, notices of upcoming meetings, announcements, contact information as well as details about memberships, our Chapter and our mission. The Chapter Executive was encouraged by Gene McLean’s open letter in March regarding his strategic approach for the Society which is: increasing our membership, reviewing our mandate so as not to be mis-labelled as a ‘dead society’, revisiting the name and acronym of the Society, and, if the Society is to be relevant today and moving forward, the society needs to become the Canadian voice for the security industry. As a Chapter, these themes have also been our priority and have been driving many of our decisions at the regional level. The Canadian Society for Industrial Security Inc. CSIS Inc. Chapters across Ontario joined forces with our National President and Chairman of the Board, Gene McLean, to express concerns and propose solutions following the release of new training and testing regulations by Ontario’s Private Security Investigation Services Branch. This led to an unprecedented collaboration with four other security agencies – ASIS International Canada, the Association of Professional Security Agencies (APSA), the Canadian Security Association (CANASA), and the Council of Private Investigators – Ontario (CPIO). Together, we drafted a formal letter that was hand-delivered to the Office of the PSISB Registrar, Ms. Lisa Kool on April 1.

Many of our members attended The CSIS National Conference on “The Business of Security” at The Crowne Plaza in September which once again offered interesting and varyied guest speakers over a two day period. It was nice to see so many of our student members from Algonquin College in attendance, and refreshing to be a part of their interaction.

In closing, my ongoing vision is to make CSIS Inc. the security society of choice in our community. If we haven’t yet met, my team and I look forward to doing so at the next meeting. I would like to express my sincere wishes to you and your families for a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season. Paul A. Guindon Chairman – CSIS National Capital Region

The Department of National Defence (DND), the Canadian Forces (CF), and the Commissionaires recently announced the signing of the Return to Work Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide meaningful

employment to veterans injured in the line of duty. The MOU, signed at National Defence Headquarters by Rear Admiral Andrew Smith, Chief Military Personnel, and Paul Guindon, Chairman of Commissionaires is designed to assist the recovery of CF members who are ill or injured as a result of their military service. Participation in this program will result in either reintegrating the member back to their military duties in the CF, or successfully transitioning them to a post-military career.
