• Over the last six seasons, an NCHC team has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO Poll 89 weeks, 74 more weeks than any other conference combined (Big Ten second at 15 weeks). Four different NCHC teams (DU, UMD, UND and St. Cloud State) have all held the No. 1 ranking for at least 19 weeks during that span, all more than any other conference combined.

YOU STAY CLASSY, HUGH MCGING: Western Michigan senior forward and captain Hugh McGing was named one of only 10 finalists among men’s ice hockey student-athletes on Thursday for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award in 2019-20. McGing is the lone representative from the NCHC up for the national award, which honors seniors who excel both on and off the ice, and in the community. The winner is announced on April 10 at the Frozen Four in Detroit, Mich. No NCHC player has won the award since the NCHC started in 2013-14.

GAME-WINNERS GALORE: Four players share the national lead for game-winning goals with five each and three of the four reside in the NCHC in North Dakota junior forwards Jordan Kawaguchi and Collin Adams, as well as Denver sophomore forward Cole Guttman. Those three will share the ice this weekend in Grand Forks. Four of Kawaguchi’s five game-winners came in November, while he has 15 goals this season and his 41 points rank second nationally. Adams has eight goals total and 23 points overall, while Guttman has 10 goals and 20 points this year. Omaha freshman forward Joey Abate and DU sophomore forward Emilio Pettersen are tied for fifth nationally with four game-winners each this season. (page 28)

A STAR IS BORN: Western Michigan senior defenseman Cam Lee was named NCAA Third Star of the Week on Tuesday after tying for the NCAA lead with five points (2g, 3a) last weekend, including his first two goals of the season. Lee is the third WMU player to earn an NCAA Star this season (junior forward Paul Washe and senior forward Wade Allison), most among NCHC teams, and is the ninth NCHC player to nab an NCAA Star this year, second-most among conferences behind only Hockey East’s 10 NCAA Stars. (page 9)

WHAT A SHOT SHOW: Three NCHC teams rank in the top 10 nationally in shots on goal per game, including two of the top three. Western Michigan is second in the country and tops in the NCHC in shots on goal per game averaging 35.50 shots on target per game. Denver is third nationally in shots on goal (35.11), while Minnesota Duluth is ninth (32.68). North Dakota leads the country in fewest shots on goal allowed per game, giving up only 21.19 shots on goal per game to its opponents, more than one shot per game fewer than any other NCAA team.

THAT’S OFFENSIVE: Five NCHC teams rank in the top 19 nationally on offense in goals per game. North Dakota leads the way, ranking first nationally scoring 4.19 goals per game (the only NCAA team over four goals per game). Western Michigan ranks seventh nationally, scoring 3.50 gpg, while Omaha is 13th in the NCAA (3.23 gpg). Denver and Minnesota Duluth are tied for 18th in the country, each potting 3.18 goals per game on the season. (page 29)

WILKIE THIS WAY: Colorado College senior forward Chris Wilkie is tied for third in the NCAA with 18 goals this season. He continues to lead the NCAA averaging 5.08 shots on goal per game, while his 132 shots on the season are also tops in the country. Minnesota Duluth junior forward Nick

Swaney is second nationally, averaging 4.64 shots on goal per game. (page 28)

CENTURY CLUB ACCESS: St. Cloud State senior defenseman and captain Jack Ahcan became the third active NCHC player and first NCHC defenseman to reach 100 career points last weekend at Colorado College with a goal and two assists. He now has 100 points exactly on 20 goals and 80 assists in 139 games and is the 34th Husky to achieve the feat at the Division I level. Western Michigan senior forward and captain Hugh McGing became the 60th Bronco in program history to join the Century Club on Jan. 24 as he is the NCHC’s active scoring leader with 109 career points (40g, 69a) in 139 career games. Miami senior forward and captain Gordie Green, who became the first active NCHC player and 53rd Miami player to record 100 career points on Dec. 30, now has 106 points (44g, 62a) in 137 career games. Minnesota Duluth junior defenseman Scott Perunovich is next in line for the Century Club among NCHC players with 98 career points (18g, 80a in 109 GP) and would become only the second active junior in NCAA hockey to reach 100 career points.

HOBEY HOPEFULS: Fan voting for the 2020 Hobey Baker Award opened in mid-January and 14 NCHC players were nominated by their schools, with all eight teams having at least one representative. The NCHC’s lone Hobey Baker Award winner is former Denver defenseman Will Butcher in 2017. Among the NCHC’s 14 nominees, nine are forwards, four are defensemen and one is a goaltender. By class, six NCHC nominees are seniors, five are juniors and three are sophomores. The 14 nominees trail only ECAC Hockey’s 16 among conferences. The 14 nominees are:

Kawaguchi continued his Hobey Baker-worthy campaign in January, leading the conference

and ranking second nationally with 14 points in nine games, while leading UND to a 6-2-1 record. His 14 points were three more than any other NCHC player during the month, while his six goals tied for the conference lead and his eight assists tied for third in January. Kawaguchi registered a point in eight of nine games in the month, including five multi-point outings. Kawaguchi opened January on a seven-game point streak, including a pair of points both nights in a home sweep of Alabama-Huntsville to start the new year on Jan. 3-4. Kawaguchi tacked on five points in a tie and win at Miami on Jan. 17-18, including a goal each night. The undrafted free agent tallied two points in the series opener at Minnesota Duluth Jan. 24, while capped his month with an assist on the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Colorado College. Brink led NCHC rookies with both six assists and nine points in January. His 1.12 points

per game also led all NCHC newcomers in the month, while he potted three goals for the Pioneers. Brink fired 21 shots on goal in Jan-uary, tying for the NCHC freshman lead, as did his +5 plus/minus. The Philadelphia Flyers draft pick tallied a point in seven of the eight games in he played in January, including two multi-point outings, while helping Denver to a 5-1-2 record in those games. After missing DU’s first game in January while returning from the World Junior Cham-pionship, Brink scored a goal in his first game back from the Czech Republic, a 4-3 win over then-No. 9 UMass on Jan. 4 in the series finale. He then chipped in three assists in a sweep of St. Cloud State the following week-end and had a hand in both DU goals in a 2-2 tie at Omaha Jan. 18, scoring the tying goal in the closing seconds of regulation. Brink finished January with a highlight-reel goal in a 3-2 loss to then-No. 10 UMD on Jan. 31. Brink tallied five of his points on the pow-er play, tops among NCHC rookies in January.

Shepard played every second in net for UMD in January, backstopping UMD to

a 3-3-1 record. He led the NCHC with 209 saves in the month, while ranking second with a .921 save percentage. In seven starts during the month, three of which came against top-five opponents, he compiled a 2.57 goals-against average, which was third in the NCHC. Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose

Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second straight and third Penrose Cup overall last season, also winning it in the NCHC’s inaugural season (2013-14). North Dakota has won two Penrose Cups back-to-back (2014-15, 2015-16), while Denver is the only other Penrose Cup champion (2016-17) to date.

While three NCHC teams are idle this weekend, there was still plenty of excitement and goals to go around Friday

night, as both conference contests were decided by one goal, while Western Michigan erupted in a non-conference win. No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth inched closer to first-place North Dako-ta, who has a bye this weekend, with a 3-2 win over Omaha, moving within five points of UND. St. Cloud State took over sole possession of fifth place with a 3-2 overtime win at Colorado College, rallying from 2-0 down. In non-conference play, West-ern Michigan tied a season high in goals in an 8-4 win over RPI.

No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth 3, Omaha 2Striking once in each period, No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth held off Omaha for a 3-2 win Friday night at AMSOIL Arena. With the win, UMD moved within five points of first-place North Dakota, while it was the Bulldogs’ eighth straight win over the Mavericks. Junior forward Kobe Roth opened the scoring in the first period to put UMD in front, while the teams traded power play goals in the second stanza. Sophomore forward Noah Cates then scored the game-winner in the third period after his brother, Jackson, set him up off a faceoff win. Omaha senior forward Teemu Pulk-kinen brought the Mavericks within one late, but UNO couldn’t find the equalizer with an extra attacker. Freshman Isaiah Saville totaled 38 saves for Omaha as they were outshot, 41-26.

St. Cloud State 3, Colorado College 2 (OT)Senior defenseman and captain Jack Ahcan scored in overtime to lift St. Cloud State to a 3-2 win over Colorado College Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena. The Tigers, who unveiled a new logo Friday, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period be-hind goals from sophomore defenseman Bryan Yoon and senior forward Chris Wilkie, who now leads the NCHC with 18 goals. The Huskies started to rally shortly after, however, as freshman forward Chase Brand tipped a shot from Ahcan to get on the board, while three minutes later senior forward Jack Poehling tied the game. After a scoreless third period, the game went to overtime, where Ahcan potted a rebound on his backhand just 31 seconds into the extra session to give SCSU the win. The Huskies outshot CC, 34-24, in the victory.

Western Michigan 8, RPI 4In the only non-conference game involving an NCHC team Friday night, Western Michigan tied a season high with eight goals, including five in the second period, to double up RPI, 8-4, at Lawson Ice Arena. The Broncos top two lines were dominant, potting six of the goals and compiling 14 points. Senior forward and captain Hugh McGing was the lone Bronco with two goals, also adding an assist for a three-point night, while classmate Dawson DiPietro also had a three-point night on a goal and two helpers. McGing and fellow senior Wade Allison scored in the first frame to put WMU up 2-0, with DiPietro assisting on each. The Engineers closed within a goal in the second period, but the Broncos exploded for five goals over the final 11 minutes of the middle stanza to put the game out of each, with DiPietro and McGing each tallying during the outburst. WMU outshot RPI, 36-33, in the win.

Two of the three series involving NCHC teams this weekend resulted in sweeps, as No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth earned

a conference sweep, while Western Michigan finished off a non-conference sweep. The Bulldogs pulled away from Omaha for a 4-1 win at home to finish their sweep, while the Broncos downed RPI, 6-2, for their broom job. In the other NCHC game Saturday, St. Cloud State rallied for the second straight night, forcing a 2-2 overtime tie with Colorado College, but the Tigers earned the extra NCHC point in a shootout.

No. 6/7 MINNESOTA DULUTH 4, OMAHA 1Behind strong goaltending and a key play at the end of the second period, No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth pulled away from Omaha for a 4-1 win Saturday at AMSOIL Arena to finish off a sweep and win their ninth straight over the Mavericks. With the game tied 1-1 and time winding down in the second period, Omaha created a golden scoring chance on a rebound, but UMD senior goalie Hunter Shepard stuck his paddle out to make a highlight-reel save, which then led to an outlet pass and break-away, finished by sophomore forward Tanner Laderoute for the game-winner with 17 ticks left in the second stanza. UMD senior Jade Miller then tallied his first goal of the season early in the third period off an assist from Laderoute, while an empty-netter sealed the Bulldog sweep. UMD outshot Omaha, 39-32, in the win.

COLORADO COLLEGE 2, ST. CLOUD STATE 2 (OT)For the second straight night, St. Cloud State erased a two-goal deficit at Colorado College to force overtime, but on Saturday, the game ended in a 2-2 tie (SCSU won in OT Friday), with the Tigers earning the extra conference point in a shootout at the Broadmoor World Arena. Sophomore forward Ben Copeland opened the scoring for CC late in the first period, splitting the defense for a breakaway, while the Tigers doubled their lead with a short-handed goal from freshman Josiah Slavin in the second period. The Huskies got on the board late in the middle period with sophomore forward Nolan Walker’s first goal of the season, while SCSU tied the game with less than four minutes to go in regulation when junior forward Easton Brodzinski finished a one-timer in front of the net on the power play. After two score-less overtimes, sophomore Grant Cruikshank tallied for CC in the first round of the shootout, while freshman goalie Matt Vernon made a save on Walker to snag the extra standings point.

WESTERN MICHIGAN 6, RPI 2Western Michigan’s offense continued to roll in a 6-2 win over RPI Saturday at Lawson Ice Arena, completing a weekend sweep. The game was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes, but WMU struck three times in the first 3:44 of the second stanza to blow the game open. After RPI made it 4-2, the Broncos then tacked on two goals 11 ticks apart late in the third period to seal the win. Senior defenseman Cam Lee paced the offense with his first two goals of the season and tied a career high with three points. Sophomore forward Drew Worrad chipped in three assists for WMU. The Broncos were 2-for-4 on the power play in the win and outshot RPI, 35-23.
